Staying Safe - Inside and Out Primary Times is independently published and distributed free through Infant and Junior Schools throughout Surrey. It is also available by subscription at £10 per year. Start carol
vorderman’s
30 day maths
challenge Getting children excited about maths can be difficult. Getting children to do extra maths outside of the classroom can be an outright battle of wills for parents! We know all too well how hard it can be to get children doing more worksheets, especially when they look suspiciously like their homework. But help is at hand! We spoke to Carol Vorderman, maths guru and creator of themathsfactor.com, for her top tips on getting children to practise maths outside of the classroom: 1. Numbers are everywhere! For younger children, get them counting whenever you can, whether it’s the birds on the telegraph wire, or measuring out ingredients in the kitchen. 2. For older children, get them calculating whenever you can get them to help figure out the ‘best buy’ in the supermarket, or the best value petrol station to stop at. 3. Try online! Children who haven’t responded well to worksheets and workbooks often respond very differently to a website, with the instant feedback it gives. A great option is Carol’s themathsfactor. com – it’s launching a 30 Day Challenge on 1st Sept, which your child can start any time before 30th Sept. It’s fun, it’s rewarding and it gets them doing a little maths every day – which is the real key to success. n

Nestled in the village of Shackleford, Godalming, Aldro is a day and boarding prep school where boys aged 7-13 enjoy an outstanding all-round education. Every day sees a large range of activities included in the normal timetable. Ask the boys what they really enjoy doing and some would go for shooting, others chess, art, judo, fly-fishing, model railways... the list could go on. Academic life has to be at the core of a successful school and Aldro has an outstanding record of success over the past ten years with the scholarship boards speaking for themselves – boys go on to all the top public senior schools. Boys develop the ability to take the initiative with their work – whether boarders or dayboys they complete their prep at school and
this is an invaluable study skill for the future, however equally valued are the boy’s achievements in other areas such as sport, music, chess, art and drama. Only last term saw our new Sports Hall officially opened by HRH The Earl of Wessex. We pride ourselves on creating a family atmosphere where children feel happy and safe and encourage the boys to value and to be supportive of each other; making the boys part of a caring, happy extended family is a key reason for Aldro’s success. Our boarding house provides a wonderful setting for our part-time, weekly and full time boarders. Bringing out the best in your son is Aldro’s goal, it is the reason we are here, to prepare boys for the rest of their lives. Contact Mrs Sadler on 01483 409019 or email admissions@ aldro.org to attend the Open Morning, or to arrange an individual appointment with our new Headmaster, Mr James Hanson. n
The choice of preparatory education for your child is one of the most emotional and challenging decisions a parent makes. Your three-year-old is so young yet is ready to explore the world and embrace the stimulation a good Nursery supplies. What will they grow up to be like? Will they enjoy music, or sport or science? How will you and they discover hidden talents? At five their ability to take on a little more structured learning is growing. By age seven study takes on increasing depth, culminating in preparation for entry to their Senior Schools. Everyone wants their child’s transitions on the educational journey to be as seamless and enjoyable as possible. So what to look for when you release your child into another’s care?
St George’s Junior School, Weybridge is a leading independent co-educational Roman Catholic day school offering girls and boys aged 3 – 11 a values-led education. From Nursery at age 3, we welcome children into a happy and vibrant atmosphere that inspires, excites and supports development throughout the important first years of education. Stimulating activities engage the body and mind, and children are actively encouraged to unearth their own passions by exploring the world around them. Small class sizes ensure that each child is supported individually, allowing them to discover their own unique way of learning within a calm and creative environment.
Set in over fifty acres with gardens, playing fields, an outdoor swimming pool and private woodland learning areas, children have abundant access to a wide range of modern learning facilities and extra-curricular activities.
I believe children should feel safe, calm and secure in a stimulating surrounding, and have freedom to express themselves. Self-discovery can take many forms - experimenting, exploring, being part of a club, playing in a sports squad, entering academic challenges, being a thespian in the play, or perhaps the only ukulele in the orchestra! Then add opportunities
to learn from real life outdoors, trips, residential visits and everyone has the opportunity to discover their talents. Fundamental to any educational investment is assurance of the highest possible academic attainment for your child, best achieved when your child feels valued, fulfilled and happy. I believe that high quality teaching begins with specialist teachers in small teaching groups delivered across a broad curriculum in an encouraging, homely atmosphere with a strong Christian ethos that promotes confidence, independence and delivers success. These values are why I am in education. Please do visit Coworth Flexlands School Open Day on Thursday 8th October to see our vision in daily practice. n
We provide a safe and caring place where children are able to flourish as individuals, whilst also developing a sense of mutual respect and compassion that will serve them in the rest of their school lives and beyond. The school was inspected in October 2014 achieving a grade of ‘excellent’, something that both the girls and boys and staff are extremely proud of. At the heart of Hoe Bridge stands the stunning 17th century mansion, Hoe Place. Around this historical mansion, the school has undertaken another major building project to further enhance the facilities. The Pre-Prep department has been completely rebuilt creating more space and light for the youngest children and future projects will also create more space for the girls and boys in the Prep department. From September 2015, the Nursery will be extending the hours it currently offers to five full days.

Alongside the academics sport, music, art and drama play a major part throughout the school and the boys and girls excel in many areas; end of year productions; sporting excellence achieving national success in netball and hockey, county success in cricket and football; individual musical success in national youth orchestras and choirs and a spectacular annual art exhibition. Scholarships in all these areas are regularly won. The atmosphere of every school is unique and the strength and attraction of Hoe Bridge lies in the atmosphere. Standards and targets are realistic, though set as high as possible, the bright are challenged and the less able supported, instilling confidence in all the boys and girls. The school has an extremely good reputation, is constantly striving to improve results and preserve and enrich the family atmosphere. n

The start of each Autumn Term sees 90 very excited and energetic 11+ girls join St Catherine’s and marks the beginning of the next 7 important years of personal, educational and emotional growth and development. They feel deep loyalty to St Catherine’s and each other, fostered by a well-established and popular House system which underpins the whole school. ‘St Cat’s’ girls enjoy high quality, stimulating teaching every day from the Prep School through to the Sixth Form. Examination results at both GCSE and A Level place St Catherine’s regularly amongst the top schools nationwide. Oxbridge candidates regularly meet their offers too; our Destination of Leavers data is perfect evidence for the very impressive range of highlyregarded universities to which St Catherine’s Sixth Formers progress.
This is a busy, vibrant school, where girls make the most of the outstanding on-site facilities; Art, Music, Drama and Sport enjoy facilities which are second to none including a comprehensive and capacious Sports Hall, indoor pool and impressive auditorium. Our village location in Bramley is fundamental to our friendly community. Over lunchtime, girls find plenty to occupy themselves, for example, at House meetings, reading, rehearsing in the Drama Studio, playing sport or simply chatting with friends. And after school, there is still lots of activity in the Senior School, home to 200 boarders, bringing huge advantages for day girls and working parents too who appreciate the free after-school provision. There has never been a better time to be a St Cat’s girl. Why not find out more? n
“…there is something you must always remember, you are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem and smarter than you think…”, powerful words from 100 Acre Wood. Well our Little Ed’s Nursery and Lower School may not sit in quite such an expanse of woodland, a mere 40 acres of Surrey countryside to be precise, and the words of encouragement and optimism may not come from one so small or be aimed at one so obsessed with sticky honey, but the sentiment is definitely one which sits comfortably with the ethos of the school. Children who attend Little Ed’s and our Lower Prep are given the confidence to make the most of their abilities, the opportunity to develop their skills within a positive and fun environment and the expectation that everything and anything is possible with the right encouragement and support. St. Ed’s classes are small with
Little Ed’s Nursery provision on a minimum of 1:4 or 1:6 ratio depending on age, and teaching groups of no more than 16 children in our Lower Prep. Regular communication with and reporting to parents is part of the St. Ed’s style, ensuring that each child’s development and progress is carefully monitored and encouraged. A structured yet flexible timetable ensures that our fantastic team of class teachers can make the most of all the opportunities available to the children, and thanks to our After School Clubs, our children can stay at school until 6.15 pm, making life a little easier for our busy parents. Why not join us at our next Open Morning on Saturday 3rd October 2015 to find out a little more about Little Ed’s and our Lower Prep; we think you’ll like what you see! For more information please contact Georgina Sexton, Registrar on 01428 609875 or registrar@saintedmunds.co.uk. n
Cranmore School enjoys a remarkable reputation as one of Surrey’s leading schools for boys. It has announced that it will become fully co-educational, welcoming girls and boys from aged 2½ to 13. Headmaster, Michael Connolly, commented “We are implementing this change from a position of strength. Increasingly parents want their sons and daughters to be educated together and we feel sure that Cranmore is well placed to deliver an outstanding education for both boys and girls.” The school has been commended for its academic reputation, excellent facilities and high quality music and sport. Cranmore was awarded the top grade in every category for its most recent inspection: “The pupils’ achievements are excellent.” and “The pupils’ personal development is supported by excellent pastoral care.” There is a very broad curriculum. Pupils study both modern and classical languages: French, Spanish, Mandarin, Latin and Greek. As you would
expect for a leading school, Maths, English and Science are very strong with the latter being taught as Physics, Chemistry and Biology from Year 6 onwards. The sporting opportunities are phenomenal as the school has its own extensive playing fields, swimming pool, gymnasium with climbing wall and a sports hall which incorporates a fitness centre and several squash courts. Children can pursue all the major sports but also do rowing, skiing or even golf. Younger pupils, including those in the Nursery (Bright Stars at Cranmore), receive an excellent start which includes access to a fantastic Forest School with bespoke log cabin. In addition to the Nursery, the main entry points are for Reception (4+) and Year 3 (7+). The school anticipates a strong demand for places in the next academic year. Interested families should look at the website and contact the school to arrange a personal visit so that they can learn more about this exciting development. n
