The Maths Factor 30 Day Challenge!
Getting children to do extra maths outside of the classroom can be an outright battle of wills for parents! We all know how hard it can be to get children doing more worksheets, especially when they look suspiciously like homework.
The Maths Factor has created the 30 Day Challenge to motivate children and boost their maths skills with 10-15 minutes of play and practice daily for 30 days. Don’t worry if that sounds daunting - there are online prizes for managing just 15 days. But any child who does manage a Maths Factor session every day for 30 days will

receive a real Maths Factor medal in the post!
“Zoe has found the 30 day challenges very motivating and it has been heart-warming to watch her progress in maths from struggling and believing she was slow and no good at maths to being confident, fast on her multiplication recall, and believing that she really can do it.” Tanya Markwick - Parent, May 2016. Magic garden
at hampton court
Discover an imaginative play garden for families, inspired by the myths and legends of the Tudor Court. Populated by mysterious mythical beasts, with battlements to storm, towers to besiege and even a secret grotto to discover, the Magic Garden is a unique way for families to explore the palace’s past. Set within King Henry VIII’s former Tiltyard, the new garden takes inspiration from the fairytale-like quality of the Tudor Palace. The bright King and Queen’s towers offer the best vantage point over the arena, where duelling young knights can recreate the battles of the age, whilst the Discovery Tower represents the Tudor fascination with exploration.

Over 17,000 bulbs and 3000 shrubs have been planted in the garden, and a jungle of tree ferns that could well conceal a few monsters in the Mythical Beast’s Lair. The garden is topped off by a bejewelled crown based on a recreation of the King’s own which is on display in the palace’s Chapel Royal. The real crowning glory of the garden is a 25ft long sleeping dragon, who will awaken as the palace’s clock strikes every hour. Prepare for a shock as his eyes gleam and he breathes steam. A visit to the Magic Garden at Hampton Court is the perfect day out to beat the back-to-school blues. Aimed at children of all ages, entry to the Magic Garden will be included in the palace ticket price. For more information, visit www.hrp.org.uk. n

All schools have admission criteria to decide which children get places and these criteria differ depending on the school. Before deciding to apply for a place in a particular school you need to check with your council to see if you are in the catchment area. The catchment area for schools is defined by the local authority and every year stories are legion of people living next door to a particular school yet not being part of the catchment. Do not assume that because you are within walking distance of a particular place of learning that you are within the catchment. Check now to avoid disappointment later. The local council/authority should be able to provide you with a list of application criteria for the school(s) of your choice, as they can, and do, vary from school to school. For example, some schools will give preference to a child who already has a sibling there. It is also good practice to contact the school directly to double check what their admissions policies are. And remember you don’t have long as the deadline for applications is 31 October. If you are sending your child to a private or fee paying secondary school, then contact them directly to find out what they require for admission as your child’s place could depend on passing an entrance exam. Unfortunately, unless you are prepared to educate your child privately, you cannot choose your child’s secondary school. You can express a preference when
At St Paul’s we aim to give children a first class education, with an abundance of opportunities, which allow your child to grow both spiritually and academically. St Paul’s is a community of learning where children are well-cared for, happy and valued. Our school motto is `Achieving Excellence, Learning to Serve’ and this underpins all that we do. At St Paul’s we encourage all students to explore their God-given vocation to be the best person that they can be. We want our students to be confident in their own abilities, with open minds, and aware of their duty to care for others, society and the wider world. From recent Government performance tables published, St Paul’s is in the top 10% of schools nationally for GCSE
16
applying but there is no guarantee that your child will get a place at your first choice. (Some schools are over-subscribed so it will be of some help to get your application in on time.) Secondary school placements should be confirmed by the council on 1st March (or the next working day). If you did not get a place in the school you preferred there are some things you can do. First, accept the place you have been offered – this doesn’t mean that you have to take it or that you won’t be in a position to try to get into your preferred school. Simply, if all else fails, it means your child has a place to go to school next September. A place, even in a school that wasn’t your preference, is better than no school place at al. If you know nothing about the school where you’ve been offered a place, then make an appointment to visit. As soon as you find out that your child has not got into your preferred school find out immediately what the appeals process is. There will be a very limited window when you can appeal so don’t delay in finding out when it is. Once you’ve applied for an appeal you will only have a short time to assemble evidence to present to an ‘Appeal Committee’ as to why your child should get a place in the school of your choice. If you are contemplating an appeals process, then it is best to seek out advice. Talk to secondary school teachers and anyone who has already been through the process.
results. This means that the academic progress our children make from when they arrive to when they finish their GCSEs is outstanding on all measures. Last November we were graded Outstanding in the Section 48 Diocesan Inspection and more recently have won two more awards for student progress and attainment at GCSE from the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust (SSAT). This year St Paul’s has had another fantastic set of results in the GCSEs with 86% A*-C in English and Maths. These results are our best ever and are testament to all the hard work our staff and students have put in. So what do we want for our students? Quite simply, to be the best! www.st-pauls.surrey.sch.uk n
Primary Times Back to School 2016
Check to see if there is a waiting list for your preferred school and if there is make sure your child’s name is added to it. Ask where on the waiting list your child is and how many children from the waiting list got places the previous year – this means you will have some idea of whether or not your child will get in. To further your child’s chances of getting a place at a school you want you can be on several waiting lists at the one time. (Don’t forget though you’re your child may be pushed down the list if another child is added who fulfils more of that school’s application criteria). If the secondary school you’ve been allocated is over 3 miles walking distance you can contact the council and ask them what provision they will make to transport your child to and from school every day. Whether or not you got your child into the school of your choice try to stay calm. Moving up to secondary school is a huge transition for children and often a frightening one. Be sure to emphasize the positives which could include the fact that some of their school friends will also be going to the same school while equally they will make lots of new friends. For some children it will be an opportunity to expand their sporting prowess whilst for others it could be the chance to advance their artistic skills. For almost all children Secondary school marks a new era of independence and that really is something to celebrate. n
Downsend School boasts three Pre-Prep Schools conveniently situated in Ashtead, Leatherhead and Epsom. Each has its own dedicated Headteacher and specialist staff to nurture and support both girls and boys from age 2 to 6. Each location is a comfortable, home-like building in residential surroundings with plenty of garden for outdoor learning and playing. Our Pre-Preps adopt a positive approach to encouraging learning development and excellent behaviour in the children. Parents who choose us are drawn to the caring and friendly atmosphere of our schools and find an instant network of family support. We are a school first and foremost. Our teachers are highly skilled in early years’ development and experienced at embedding a solid educational foundation. We make learning fun and enjoyable in our bright and welcoming classrooms and our creative and interactive lessons inspire every child whilst they are nurtured, supported and cared for. The children are taught in small classes achieving excellent pupil ratios of 1:4 in First Steps and averaging 1:7 in Reception and Year 1. This is important to building a solid educational foundation in Numeracy and Literacy and for the children to develop supportive and nurturing relationships with their teachers. Our younger children develop co-ordination of mind and body through play activities. This helps them acquire pre-reading, pre-writing and pre-number
skills so that they naturally follow on to reading, writing and mathematics when they are ready to do so. They also enjoy Music, Art, French, Technology, Physical Education and Movement. Once in full-time education, the children experience a broad and vibrant curriculum where they are introduced to History, Geography, French, Religious Studies, Computing and Drama while still enjoying individualised learning in English, Maths and Science. All Year 1 children learn to play a simple wind instrument and develop their physical movement and ball skills through a wide variety of PE and games. Children in Reception and Year 1 also attend weekly swimming lessons at our Prep School in Leatherhead.
The learning experience is rich and varied and based on carefully structured and well-articulated curriculum. We work closely with our parents as we believe that education is a partnership and together we ensure each child enjoys their time with us and is prepared for a happy and successful progression to the Prep School. By the time children leave our schools at the end of Year 1 they have achieved high standards, have developed into confident young people and are well prepared for the next stage on their educational journey at Downsend. • Our curriculum builds solid foundations in literacy and numeracy, from an early age. • 95% of our children are reading by the end of their first term in Reception. • Over 90%* of our children work above the National Average by the end of Year 1. • Specialist teaching in French, Music, Sport and Drama from aged 2 • Outdoor learning curriculum in our Forest, Woodland & Nature Schools • Various games and swimming lessons • After school clubs and wrap around care before and after school. * Based on 2015 analysis.
We look forward to meeting you. Contact our Admissions Registrar, Sarah Concanon, on 01372 372 311 or email admissions@downsend.co.uk For more information visit www.downsend.co.uk

A key group of our senior students are fully trained and highly valued Peer Mentors. They participate in a wide range of activities that develop
the caring, supportive atmosphere that we value so much at Woking High School. Excellent Learning and Teaching “The teaching I received here at Woking High School is outstanding, especially in the core subjects. I am so lucky”. The words of this Year 10 student reflect the fact that at Woking High School we place learning at the centre of all that we do. We strive to ensure that all students fulfil their potential through an unparalleled provision of curricular and extra curricular activities, thus ensuring that students are challenged and motivated to achieve the highest levels of academic excellence. As a result our students have gained places at the most prestigious colleges and gone on to gain places at some of the best universities in the country including Oxford and Cambridge. Students can access a wide range of curriculum options which provide challenge and foster a spirit of enquiry. Many departments run their own extra-curricular societies to stimulate interest and lectures by distinguished speakers from outside the school are frequent. 2016’s A Level results saw a quarter of all grades achieved at Caterham School the top A* grade with over 56% at A*/A grades. Mr Ceri Jones, Headmaster said: “Congratulations to our Upper Sixth who have achieved such a strong set of exam results. I am equally delighted that they have ensured that their time at school has been spent not just focusing on how to pass an exam but also on developing themselves as individuals, developing their own interests and passions and making lifelong friendships. “As ever, there are some stunning individual performances in these results and from an academic point of view I am particularly pleased that another dozen or so pupils will be joining the fifty Caterhamians that we have sent to Oxford and Cambridge over the past three years. “This strong set of results is underpinned by the hard work and commitment of both pupils and teachers, and also by an approach to education that encourages

St. Andrew’s School was founded in 1937 and is a respected and thriving co-educational Prep School, set in 11 acres of grounds near Woking town centre. The School seeks to create a nurturing and happy environment in which all pupils are encouraged and enabled to develop their potential to the full. At St. Andrew’s children feel secure and confident and are highly motivated to perform to the best of their ability in all aspects of school life. Children are prepared for entrance and scholarship exams to a wide range of independent senior schools and there are specialist teaching facilities for all subjects including science, ICT, music and art. The curriculum is broad and the school places great emphasis on music, sport and the arts. In our recent ISI Inspection, (January
2016), we were extremely proud to be rated ‘excellent’ in all areas. St. Andrew’s has excellent on-site facilities including an all weather sports surface, sports pitches, tennis courts, cricket nets and a swimming pool. Children can be supervised at school from 8am and, through our extensive afterschool activities programme for Year 3 and above, until 6/6.30 pm most evenings during the week. An after-school club is available from 4pm to 6pm for Pre-Prep and Year 3 children. Don’t take our word for it! Come to our next open morning and have a guided tour by one of our senior pupils. See our advertisement for more details or visit our website: www.st-andrews.woking.sch.uk n
EXCEPTIONAL ISI Result Reigate Grammar School is extremely proud to have been awarded the rating of ‘Exceptional’ for Achievement & Learning in its recent ISI inspection of the school. All other categories on the inspection were scored at the highest level of ‘Excellent’. It is fantastic to know that the work students and staff put into learning is a model of success. Going for GB Gold Niamh Brown, a Sixth Form student, was recently selected to represent Great Britain as part of the GB Team in the Great Edinburgh Cross Country Competition. This fantastic honour came hot on the heels of Niamh winning a Silver medal at the European Cross Country Trials. Niamh ran in the Nationals in Castle Donnington at the end of February and became National Under 17 Cross Country Champion 2016. She also anchored her team to win gold. We are excited about what Niamh will achieve next. Top Marks RGS entered four teams of students into this year’s RSC’s Chemistry Challenge, a competition designed for Fourth Form students. All four RGS teams performed very well in the first round of the competition which tested their chemical knowledge and ability to think laterally. Our A team of Gabby Brasaite, Joe Miller, Emma Starbuck and Chris Stergiou finished in the top 6 teams, out of 75, in the region (Sussex and Surrey). This resulted in them qualifying for the regional final. This was
held during May at Kingston University. This time there was a greater emphasis on the practical side of the subject with the team having to work out the percentage purity of solutions and analyse how the composition of coins has changed over time as well as a multiple choice test. This played into the team’s hands and they quickly proved themselves to be the most methodical and accurate group in the competition and were duly crowned as the Royal Society of Chemistry Regional Champions, the first team from Reigate Grammar School to ever achieve this feat. Summer Concert The Summer Concert this year featured a wide range of musicians from First to Fourth Form performing a varied programme, including rock, pop, baroque, classical, romantic, music theatre and jazz styles! Ensembles of percussionists, strings, singers, brass, clarinets and guitars rose to the occasion with some engaging and highly accomplished performances, led by our visiting music teachers. Special mention should also go to the soloists who wowed the audience with their passionate playing and their sense of composure: Bernadette Cheng-Whitehead, Freya Biggs, Estuardo Del Angel, Sophia Herbert, Rosalind Anderson, Lakith Gabrielsen, Isabel Ainsworth, and in particular Gabriele Brasaite, who produced an outstanding rendition of the first movement from Mendelssohn’s violin concerto, and Zara Brotzel, who was the star soprano soloist with the choir. Many of the students combined to form a Summer Orchestra, who performed Tchaikovsky that was refined and also powerful under the
direction of Richard Hare, and Batman Blues which was a great crowd-pleaser! The musical future of the school is very exciting with such talented and enthusiastic performers coming through! RGS win at Leatherhead Drama Festival Winner of the Best New Writing Award went to Oliver Woolgrove, Tom Box, Nicole James and Goya Verity for their play dealing with the effects of Alzheimer’s on families. This powerful and lyrical piece of physical theatre tells the story of two brothers blighted by this horrible illness. The adjudicator praised the group for their dynamic storytelling and their lyrical choice of soundtrack. She was moved to tears by the sensitivity of the piece. Goya Verity also won the prestigious Best Actress Award at the Festival- she is a talent to watch in the future. After her phenomenal performance in Angus, Thongs and Even More Snogging –it is a privilege to see her delivering such a diverse set of performance skills. n Reigate Grammar School *Top Co-Educational Independent Day School in Surrey (The Sunday Times Parent Power league tables 2015) Tel: 01737 222231 Email: info@reigategrammar.org www.reigategrammar.org www.facebook.com ReigateGrammarSchool @ rgsheadmaster

Visitors to Sunbury Manor frequently comment on the warm, calm, caring, studious atmosphere, the excellent relationships amongst all members of the school community and the clear enthusiasm our students have for their work and all aspects of school life. Highlights from our full Ofsted report in March this year, that will help you get a feel for the atmosphere, curriculum and ethos of the school were: • This is a very inclusive school that serves its community well. • The school is a safe, happy and harmonious environment. • An effective and committed team which is passionate about improving the life chances of pupils at Sunbury Manor School. • Effective teaching continues to support pupils making good progress in a wide range of subjects. • Behaviour around the school is good, with calm and orderly movement between classes and at break times. Pupils are respectful of their environment with very little litter or damage seen in the buildings. Pupils are polite and helpful to visitors, holding doors open for them. · Attendance is above average. The Headteacher and Leadership Team of the school are supported by a staff of fully qualified
specialists and the school has a very low staff turnover. We know that continuity and stability are key elements in ensuring that young people are able to succeed at school and they most certainly do enjoy success at Sunbury Manor. The combination of old fashioned discipline, warmth, caring, good teaching and the widest possible range of opportunities for all young people ensures that students of all abilities achieve their potential with us. This is why a significant number of staff, including the Headteacher, have chosen Sunbury Manor for the secondary education of their children. The school benefits from excellent facilities on a large site with extensive playing fields. Our IT facilities are accessible to all students from home. We use an online system for parents called “Insight”, and through this parents are able to look at their child’s attendance, behaviour and attainment day by day, email teachers, book appointments with teachers and even see what they are eating in the canteen! We teach the separate Sciences, Chemistry, Physics and Biology throughout all five years. Extra-curricular activities give students the chance to take part in a very wide range of activities, including the chance to train as ball boys and girls at Wimbledon. This year seven students got through the rigorous selection process to appear on court through the Wimbledon fortnight, most of whom worked on one of the finals. Sunbury Manor is a very successful school in local sporting competitions. The Physical Education department
offers students of all abilities a wide range of enrichment opportunities. Students were offered many PE trips in 2015/16 which included trips to Wembley, Twickenham Rugby Stadium, The Oval, Olympic Park, Sky Academy, Wentworth, Top Golf and Footgolf. We showcase the talents of our musical and drama students in successful performances and we offer a huge range of trips within the UK and internationally. Just recently we have had trips to The Rose Theatre, Sky Academy, British Museum, Ypres Battlefields, Budapest, Paris, Skiing in Killington - USA, and our Year 7 students enjoyed a wonderful 3 day activity camp at Blacklands Farm in Sussex. We celebrate success at Sunbury Manor and delight in the examination results achieved by our students and in their triumphs in all aspects of school life, and you will find lots of success stories on our website (www.sunburymanor.surrey.sch.uk). We know that students of all abilities make good progress at Sunbury Manor and one parent recently commented “Thank you for creating an environment where my boys are thriving and look forward to coming to Sunbury Manor School every day!” (Yr9 Parent quote) We would be delighted to show you what makes Sunbury Manor so successful and special at our Open Evening on Thursday 6th October, or please phone (01932 784258) to arrange a visit during a normal school day. n

“… there is something you must always remember, you are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem and smarter than you think … “, powerful words from 100 Acre Wood. Well our Little Ed’s Nursery may not sit in quite such an expanse of woodland, a mere 40 acres of Surrey countryside to be precise, and the words of encouragement and optimism may not come from one so small or be aimed at one so obsessed with sticky honey, but the sentiment is definitely one which sits comfortably with the ethos of the nursery. Children who attend Little Ed’s are given the confidence to make the most of their abilities, the opportunity to develop their skills within a positive and fun environment and the expectation that everything and anything is possible with the right encouragement and support. These are exciting times for Little Ed’s, having recently welcomed a new Nursery Manager, the Nursery is now extending its provision to include 46 weeks of care per year, commencing this September 2016.
Little Ed’s Nursery provision is on a minimum of 1:4 or 1:6 ratio depending on age. Regular communication with and reporting to parents is part of the Little Ed’s style, ensuring that each child’s development and progress is carefully monitored and encouraged. A structured yet flexible day ensures that our fantastic team of class teachers can make the most of all the opportunities available, with the children benefitting from the skill and expertise of the Prep School staff in music, sport and, for the older children, French and IT. Thanks to our After School Clubs, our children can stay at school until 6.15 pm, making life a little easier for our busy parents. Little Ed’s is holding a Nursery Open Morning on Tuesday, September 6th 2016. Why not join us and find out a little more about Little Ed’s; we think you’ll like what you see!
