RESPIRATORY ILLNESS IN CHILDREN
WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR AND WHERE TO SEEK FURTHER HELP
Advertisement
The NHS is seeing an increase in children with coughs, colds and respiratory conditions with further increases being expected in winter months. Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a respiratory virus that usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms such as a fever and cough.
Paediatrician Dr Patrick Aldridge, from Frimley Park Hospital, said: “Most viral illnesses typically clear up within seven days, without the need for medical support. For most children, treatment with paracetamol and/or ibuprofen, with sugary fluids when they’re not eating, are usually enough to help.
“I would encourage parents and carers to access the NHS Frimley Healthier Together website for up-to-date advice at their fingertips”.
The website provides advice and support from GPs, Paediatricians and local healthcare professionals to help parents recognise what might be wrong.
Each illness has a traffic light system to help parents manage their child’s symptoms at home, with red flags for when they might need to seek more specialist help, from their GP, 111 or visit the emergency department.

THE POWER OF IMAGINATIVE PLAY
It’s evident that all kids love to play, but when using their imaginations, children are also developing emotional capabilities, learning to problem solve, and fostering an understanding of the adult world in which they live. Colwell noted that children who engage in imaginative play show more emotional engagement, thoughtfulness and understanding, and less negative emotions such as selfishness and anger. to play act, and at 3, when imagination is in full swing, children love nothing more than to create make believe games. From 4 onwards, expect character acting and full storylines, developing confidence, leadership, and dispute resolution. Featuring throughout their early years, imaginative play allows children to express fears and anxieties, and as the world continues to work towards a new normal, this is more important than ever.
Play is central to the EYFS curriculum framework, and as imaginative play is such a rich contributor to a child’s overall development, it should be actively encouraged both in and out of school.
Passionate about the power of imaginative play, we created Little Street role play centres; carefully designed to stimulate curiosity and inventiveness, whilst providing a fun, safe and memorable facility for play dates, quality family time, educational visits, and celebrations.
Suitable for 1 – 8 year olds. Open 7 days a week, with 4 sessions daily. For more information visit www.little-street.co.uk and join us in a little world for BIG imaginations.
MOSAIC - FARMING & WILDLIFE EDUCATION FROM THE COUNTRYSIDE RESTORATION TRUST
Mosaic is the education branch of the Countryside Restoration Trust, teaching farming and wildlife fundamentals to the next generation while igniting their curiosity in the natural world. This all takes place within a safe and stimulating learning environment on a living, working farm, and in the heart of the Surrey countryside.
There couldn’t be a better time for Mosaic to launch. As the schools kick off a new academic year and regain some semblance of normality for their students, our bespoke educational programme stands ready to help dedicated teachers ignite children’s joy and curiosity in the natural world.
The past year has showed just how important it is to surround ourselves with nature, for our health and wellbeing. Mosaic builds on, and consolidates, the exceptional value that we placed on the countryside in helping us to feel better, both physically and mentally. So as the distractions of life and exciting new technologies invite us to spend more and more time inside once again, it is more essential than ever for programmes like Mosaic to help continue the connection between our young people and the great British countryside.
The Mosaic offer is specially crafted to deliver on teachers’ needs, and pique young people’s interest in cherished local wildlife. Our excursions are led by a trained and experienced education professional who can take the reins from our hardworking teachers for the day. The bespoke learning programmes are tailored to each educational key stage and their objectives, and all aligned to the curriculum.
Pierrepont Farm is a beautiful, wildliferich location that is home to a diversity of habitats for interesting plants and animals across 200 acres of Farnham countryside. But it is also a bustling working farm, that is home to charismatic and award-winning Jersey cows as well as a modern dairy. Excursions can include a visit to the woodland area, which is a haven for minibeasts, mammals and birds, or feature a visit to the wildlife pond which is teeming with wildlife both beneath the surface and along its sunny banks. Children can also visit the cows in their dairy and see the robotic milking parlour in action.
Thanks to our newly-launched information hub, all the resources needed for primary school teachers, Beavers and Cub leaders, and for children learning at home, are all together in one place via www.countrysiderestorationtrust.com/ mosaic-school.
Trips are available Tuesday to Thursday from March to October and a day visit takes place from 10.00am to 2.15pm. Bookings can be made by contacting the Mosaic team.
