ALL THE NEWS FROM YOUR LOCAL SCHOOLS Settling in Season... Parents Evening Tips

Many Primary schools hold a ‘settling in’ parents evening in the Autumn term, often in October. This is a great opportunity to meet your child’s new teacher for the current school year and discuss anything that may be on your mind!

You might think that the evening is just meant for you to simply listen to what the teacher has to say, or even that it’s just to highlight any problems. But it’s so much more than that. It’s also your chance to speak, to share your opinions or experiences with the teacher, as well as to discuss the positive and everyday things about your child’s school experience.

Some key things to discuss with the teacher, to make the most out of your parents evening slot could include;

If there are any particular issues at home that may have impacted your child’s mood or ability to concentrate on learning. By letting the teacher know, they can have a better understanding of your son or daughter and show them how to support your child effectively.

Your child’s friendship groups. For a child, school is as much about socialising as it is about learning! Friendships (or lack thereof) can have a huge influence over a child’s enjoyment of school. So, it could be greatly helpful to hear from the teacher what they have to say on this subject, in addition to the academics.

Little things over a long period of time, add up to big things. So, ask about the general aspects of your child’s school day. Do they contribute to class discussions? Do they seem confident? Could there be room for improvement with their concentration, or organisation? The answers to these questions might reveal small changes to make at home to benefit your child, from having more discussions at the dinner table to adding that missing piece to their pencil case.

If the teacher does have something to say that you weren’t hoping to hear, try not to be disheartened! Remember, you’re both on the same side. All either of you want is the best for your little one’s learning and development. After the parents evening, it might also be helpful to speak to other family members who spend a lot of time with your child about what the teacher has said, so that everyone is aware of how they can support you.
