as courgettes and sweetcorn that having been growing on in the greenhouse. Early Summer is also a great time to propagate your favourite plants from cuttings. At Hill Close, ninety percent of the plants sold in our small nursery are grown from the plants grown throughout our sixteen individual gardens. No special equipment is needed – just scissors and a gritty compost. Place them in a warm, well lit environment away from direct sunlight, and mist regularly to prevent them drying out. Fruit trees are an important component in our gardens, particularly apple trees, with over 60 different heritage varieties grown. The ‘June drop’ is a familiar sight for many when apple trees shed immature fruit. As few as 1 in 20 flowers need to set for a full crop so the tree discards the rest. This process can go on into July, but in a good year our trees are still carrying too heavy a crop. We help out by hand thinning which improves the quality and size of the fruits, and leave 1 or 2 apples every 6 inches. This also helps to prevent the tree from biennial bearing. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by all the jobs that suddenly need your attention but the most important one of all is to step back and appreciate your little patch of paradise. Enjoy the longer nights, the birdsong and that well deserved glass of wine. Head Gardener, Hill Close Gardens Trust @NOWWARWICKSHIRE FIND US ON FACEBOOK WWW.SOUTHWARWICKSHIRENOW.CO.UK

Start / Finish: The walk starts/ends at the top of Abbey Hill, Kenilworth. Public Transport: Currently, the nearest railway station is at Coventry then regular bus service to Kenilworth from the road-bridge above the station (ask for Abbey Hill). Please check Traveline and current timetables. Parking: There is parking on the streets above Abbey Fields and near the Castle (start and end walk at point 3 on map). O/S Map: Explorer Map 221. Distance: The main walk is 6 miles. Extended option 7.5 miles. Time: Allow all day to do the walk so that you can have a picnic in the countryside and explore the Castle at Kenilworth or do the extended walk to Honiley village. Refreshments: There are no cafés or eating places en route so why not take a picnic and enjoy it along the way. Terrain: This walk is not arduous but if you choose to do the extension, there is a gentle climb to the village of Honiley. There are gates and kiss-gates which make it unsuitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. With help it is possible to explore Kenilworth’s Old Town and the Abbey Fields area with its Abbey Remains. The Castle of course is accessible too but there is an entry fee. There is also some necessary lane-walking but the lane is quiet. Please walk on the right.
