But remember that businesses pay to be listed on the trader sites - so they are essentially the customer. the garden in september Not only a great month for the avid kitchen gardener (with all the fruit that is ready to harvest), September is also a good time to give some attention to cottage garden perennials, both by investing in new plants and dividing existing ones. A flurry of planting can take place this month, as this gives fresh specimens

1. Plant Spring-Flowering Bulbs Crocus, hyacinths, alliums and narcissi are best planted in September. Buying and planting these bulbs early in the season means that you not only get the freshest bulb stock from the garden centre, you also get the best results when the bulbs flower in the spring. Early planting gives bulbs the best chance to develop a decent root system before winter sets in, and a healthy root system equals stronger, better plants the following year. The only springflowering bulbs you should delay planting are tulips, which should be planted in October or November. The guidelines for planting bulbs in containers differ from those for planting them in borders, but all bulbs should be planted at three times the depth of the bulb.

we recommend growing the 'Oregon Thornless' (available shortly in store), as this not only produces delicious blackberries on thornfree stems, but also features distinctive foliage that turns a beautiful colour in autumn. Bear in mind that the best time to plant blackberry canes is October, so this job can be postponed for a few weeks. 4. Harvest in Earnest Harvest apples, pears and plums as they ripen, ensuring that the grass beneath your trees is well-mown so that you can spot windfalls before they rot. Pick any fruit that is rotting on a branch to prevent disease spreading to the tree. Remember to pick your fruit on a dry day, as a wet harvest will spoil more quickly and is problematic to store. as the soil is easier to work, so if the autumn is wet, delay the task until next spring. Most plants can be divided using a garden fork, but those with woody crowns or fleshy roots will need to be cut with a knife. Once plants have been divided and planted, be vigilant about watering them in, as this is essential in helping them to establish.

DRESS FOR THE OCCASION We’ve all been there. You arrive at a social event and, too late... you realise that your clothes are all wrong. It’s mortifying. So here’s an easy guide to event dressing for late summer. Check the etiquette

A quick word about weddings Always check how formal the wedding is going to be. A country wedding, for example, will call for a different dress code to a city wedding. On grass, stilettos and kitten heels won’t be your friend. You’ll spend the whole day toppling backwards. Fortunately, block heels are bang on trend at the moment and flats will be everywhere this autumn, so you have plenty of choice. These days, hats are optional. If they don’t fit your style, they’re not essential. But if you’re comfortable with hats, they can certainly add something special to an outfit. But do be careful about the perils of “social kissing” in a wide brimmed hat. It can be tricky! Remember the skin rule This one’s especially important for work parties but it applies to any event. Show off legs or décolletage - but not both, otherwise you’re in danger of losing authority.

trouser suit can be perfect - and if it works with your signature style, culottes are popular at the moment. The key is to understand the dress code and apply your style accordingly. Minimise your handbag A beautiful handbag is always good, but it’s best to minimise the contents - perhaps a retractable lip brush, compact, tissues and spare tights. Try and make sure everything you take out of your handbag is beautiful (apart from the spare tights!). And finally, if the weather looks dodgy, bring an umbrella in your best `wow’ colour. Have fun!

keeping active Start/Finish: The walk starts at Town Hall behind Parish Church. Public Transport: Nearest railway stations - Redditch, Evesham, Stratford upon Avon. Please use ‘Traveline’ and local bus timetables. Parking:- There is a large Car Park with WC behind the High Street. O/S Map: Explorer Map 205 Distance: The main walk is 6.5 miles. Shorter Walk – 5 miles. Time: Allow all day for the main walk as there is plenty to see along the way and the Museum featuring Roman Alcester is worth a visit. Refreshments: Enjoy a picnic en route. No shops along the way but plenty of cafes, pubs and food shops in Alcester. Terrain: The walk is largely flat with a few insignificant climbs. There is some necessary lane walking, including the busy ‘Trench Lane’. Strong shoes or boots are recommended. Poles can be useful but most paths well maintained. Wheelchair users can explore Alcester and its excellent museum. Large-wheeled pushchairs may manage a walk around Alcester and to Oversley Green and back. History: Alcester is rich in Roman history with many local finds on display in the Heritage Centre. This market town with its Church and Town Hall has some beautiful examples of timber-framed buildings, with the picturesque ‘Malt Mill Lane’ being the jewel in the crown.

1: From Town Hall, walk down street to right of Church then across front of Church to view High Street, once a large market place. Cross to walk down pretty ‘Malt Mill Lane’ tucked away in corner. At recreation ground, follow path alongside River Arrow. Cross Stratford Road to lane on left leading to Oversley Green. This is Monarch’s Way. Follow River Arrow along path through willow trees for ¼ mile to its confluence with River Alne in Oversley Green. 2: Walk left across long bridge from which you can observe the junction of the two small rivers. Turn right and walk along wide swathe of grass left by farmer to large gate, through this and on up slight hill. Take well marked track across field. Since you left Oversley Green, much of route has been along line of old Roman Road from Alcester towards Stratfordupon-Avon. Go through small gate, along track, gradually getting closer to A46, passing Oversley Hill Farm on left to drop down towards barn, over stile and on 60 yards to metal gate onto lane. 4: Turn left through another metal gate along ‘Arden Way’ to busy Trench Lane (¼ mile) that leads to old Stratford Road. 5: Cross with care to lane opposite that leads to old ‘Hoo Mill’ (private). This bridleway, no longer a through road is severed by River Alne which you will cross by a ‘stepped’ and ‘gated’ footbridge. Below is a ford used by horses. Cross field, and over stile near pond. Beyond this and worth exploring is Kinwarton Dovecote, owned by National Trust. 7: Retrace steps back to Glebe Farm with its beautiful barn and turn right to main road. Cross with care. 8: Shorter walk goes left, straight back to Alcester from here. Main walk goes ‘right’ along pavement for ¼ mile to ‘Coughton Fields Lane’. Turn left then, after ½ mile, turn left along ‘Heart of England Way’. 9: There is gentle climb on wide swathe of grass and through hedgerow to trig point at 99 metres. Follow ‘Arden Way’, forking right to cross field diagonally right to exit onto main road below. 10: Turn right and walk downhill and across road junction towards Alcester, curving left into town centre. Shakespeare’s New Place reveals the famous

playwright as we’ve never seen him before In August a splendid new oak and bronze gateway opened on the original threshold of Shakespeare’s New Place, inviting visitors to walk in the playwright’s footsteps, explore a dramatic new landscape and exhibition, and meet the man behind the famous works. This is the place where Shakespeare had his family home for 19 years, and where he died four hundred years ago. Now the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust has transformed this internationally significant heritage site

EDUCATION

Suggestions from Procter & Gamble for saving some money are: 1. Only buy essential school uniform first Before term starts check your child’s school uniform requirement list. Any items with the school’s badge are compulsory so budget for these first. For items of school uniform like grey trousers and white shirts, buy only as much as you can manage with in September, when demand is high – think ‘one on, one off and one in the wash’. Stock up on long trousers and short sleeve shirts out of season, in sales, and store them for next term or year.

SCHOOL UNIFORM On the 5th of September, hoards of stiff new uniforms will be marching off to school. The school uniform tsars’ eyes will be on the ties, to see if they’re knotted in a sober and high-up fashion. The majority of children will arrive in clothes to grow into, poly-blend garments that restrict movement and certainly do not score style points.

O

Children grow so quickly you can often buy almost-new clothing from your school’s uniform sale. If your child hasn’t started at the school yet, call and ask or look at the website to find out when the next sale is. 3. Be wise with children’s coats If you can, buy a coat with a lining you can easily remove and pop back in, so it will be useable on the coldest days but also be good for showery weather the rest of the year. 4. Don’t skimp on shoes There is no point buying flashy shoes for school, but children’s shoes are worn every day (and during kick-around

5. Label every item of school uniform Sew a nametag into your kid’s clothing and bags, and chase up any item that doesn’t make it home on the day it was taken to school – rooting through the lost property promptly should help avoid losing clothes forever. Still, reading all of these cost-cutting measures makes me wonder why we’re buying them at all. I love the idea of a uniform – fosters community spirit, efficient in the morning - but those worn by the majority of children don’t actually look good. So what’s the answer? By now, even the most Francophile among us have figured out that Parisian children do, at times, throw food, some Mmes are fat, and their 35-hour work week hasn’t quite worked out as planned. However, in matters of fashion, perhaps it is still safe to defer to our Gallic friends. When I complained about British school uniforms, my French friend shrugged and recalled how, in France, before the student riots in 1968, children just wore their own clothes to school and put a smock over them for the school day, to protect them. This custom is now seen as an authoritarian anachronism in France, and its revival is tabled only occasionally by far-Right candidates. But still… Comfortable. Practical. One-size-fits-all. Perhaps we should give up on the notion of pre-professional dressing and follow the French. It may not be such a bad idea.
