Finding your own style involves fashion. But what it really boils down to is your `clothing personality' - clothes that you're naturally drawn to and express the real you. father’s day

the history of father's day Father’s day will be celebrated on 19th June this year and like every year, sons and daughters will be

F

searching for the perfect gifts to mark the occasion. But when did this tradition begin and why?

ather’s Day began in the United States in the early 20th century as a result of the success of Mother’s Day. In 1868, Ann Jarvis, created a committee to establish a "Mother's Friendship Day", the

purpose of which was "to reunite families that had been divided during the Civil War." Jarvis – who had previously organised "Mother's Day Work Clubs" to improve sanitation and health for both Union and Confederate encampments undergoing a typhoid outbreak, wanted to expand this into an annual memorial for mothers, but she died in 1905 before the celebration became popular. Her daughter Anna Jarvis, continued her mother's efforts embarking upon a campaign to make "Mother's Day" a recognised holiday. During her campaign, the holiday

why is it 'father's day' and not 'fathers' day'? When Dodd first started promoting the holiday to get it established as a national holiday, she spelled it as “Fathers’ Day”, meaning fathers everywhere. But when a first attempt of passing a bill by Congress for Dodd’s day was tried, it was misspelled as “Father’s Day.” This precedence was retained for every attempt of passing the bill until Nixon finally established it.

spread throughout every U.S. state and numerous foreign countries, including Canada, Mexico, China, Japan, and throughout South America and Africa. After her persistent efforts, Mother’s Day was finally proclaimed a national holiday in 1914 by President Woodrow Wilson. Father’s day was set up as a complement to the first successful mother’s days a few years after the celebrations began gaining traction. After learning about Ann and Anna Jarvis’ mission to make a Mother’s Day at a Methodist church sermon, Sonora Smart Dodd got the idea for Father’s Day. In 1908 in Spokane, Washington, Sonora Smart Dodd listened to a Mother’s Day sermon at Central Methodist Episcopal

leaders, and gained wide acceptance. June 19, 1910, was designated as the first Father’s Day, and sermons honoring fathers were presented throughout the city. The holiday initially failed to achieve as much popularity as Mother’s day, but was formally recognised In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honouring fathers, designating the third Sunday in June as Father's Day. Six years later, the day was made a permanent national

keeping active Start/Finish: Walk starts/ends at Alvechurch Railway Station. Public Transport: Alvechurch has its own railway station and is also served by buses. Please check ‘Traveline’ and current timetables. Parking: Try arriving by train! There are parking spaces in roads nearby but do not use Station Car Park needed for rail travellers. Alternatively, you can park in Alvechurch starting the walk at point 3 . O/S Map: Explorer Map 220. Note: A small part of the walk is on map 219 but this section is clearly shown on the sketch-map here. Distance: The main walk is 6 miles. Shorter options back along lanes. Time: Allow all day to do this pretty country and canal walk Refreshments: You could take a picnic or call in at ‘The Crown Inn’ walkers are welcome and organized groups can park and eat (not Sundays) or have coffee by prior arrangement (Tel. 0121-445-2300). Terrain: This walk is undulating in the country and level along the canal. Apart from around Alvechurch Village, it is unsuitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. There are gates, stiles and some lanes. History: The old Alvechurch Railway Station is a private house. The Church is large and has a prominent setting on a hill. Alvechurch has some picturesque timber-framed buildings. The village is bordered on its western side by the Worcester and Birmingham Canal which, in 2015, celebrated its bicentenary. The walk goes up over the ‘Shortwood Tunnel’ which is 614 yards long and has no towpath so those on barges and narrow-boats had to ‘leg’ their way through this dark tunnel. The walk passes ‘Anglo-Welsh Canal Boat Hire’ where you can get snacks and ice-creams on most days.

1: From Railway Station, walk towards car park briefly to footpath on left. This old path linked earlier station to village but historically it lines up with an old route from Stoney Lane, down Scarfield’s Dingle to Parish Church of Alvechurch and village centre beyond. This path exits on Station Road.

year old Worcester and Birmingham Canal. After 500 yards, just under railway bridge, walk leaves canal for while and goes over canal bridge (61) at ‘ Crown Inn’. (Walkers are very welcome here). 5: From ‘ The Crown Inn’ walk up lane through hamlet of Withybed Green and through kiss-gate at end. Cross field to another kissgate and walk up valley, veering right to top corner of field, over a stile and up lovely swathe of grass. Veer right through avenue of trees towards ‘Foxhill House’ then left, over stile and along path onto Foxhill Lane. Cross lane to footpath opposite, over series of stiles to Scarfield Hill (opposite ‘Top Barn’). Turn right for few hundred yards. At junction curve left along Wheeley Road for short distance up to Wheeley Farm.

2: Turn right briefly then right along School Lane and left passing St.Laurence’s Church (worth a visit if open). Walk beyond Church to path on left and turn right down Bear Hill, passing ‘The Old House’ on left to arrive in village centre with its ‘Square’.

6: Take footpath on left, past cattle-grid and step over gate. On clear day you can see Malvern Hills ahead on right. Walk along this lovely track rising to nearly 600 feet then downhill to Cattespool. Follow signs round cattle-grid to gate and across to path alongside barn. Go through large gate onto bridleway between two hedges to lane below.

3: Alvechurch is a pretty village but take care of traffic while you explore. Alsoyour last chance to stock up on provisions for walk! Leave village in northerly direction along Red Lion Street. At Red Lion pub, turn left along Tanyard Lane and climb gently to Snake Lane then up Callow Hill Road to canal.

7: (Note: Briefly you go onto O/S map 219 but sketch-map with these walk notes should suffice). At junction turn left along Agmore Lane then cross diagonally to Wharf Lane and walk down to path on left just before you reach ‘Anglo Welsh Canal Boat Hire’, where you can get snacks and ice-creams!

4: Before canal-bridge, turn left down steps onto towpath of 200

8: This path cuts through to canal tow-path. Follow it round to left and alongside canal for 1/2 mile towards ‘Shortwood Tunnel’. Note: there is no tow-path through this tunnel! 9: Path veers left to gate and on well worn path diagonally across field. Go through gateway and right, gently uphill to woodland. Follow path downhill, crossing eastern tunnel portal before turning left down to towpath. 10: Go beneath a bridge then shortly notice parapet of an aqueduct and just beyond this a path on right alongside brook. Walk diagonally left across a large field to Alvechurch Railway Station where walk ends. Written and illustrated by glynis dray

Woolly mammoths, wolves and reindeer would have travelled the tundra in search of feeding grounds. Conversely 125,000 years ago, parts of the area would have resembled an open savannah with lions and hippopotamuses. Summer temperatures were 4ËšC above those of today, whilst average January temperatures of 1 to 2ËšC indicate that winters were mild. Evidence of these periods survives in geological deposits across Worcestershire and the West Midlands, mostly trapped in ancient river channels. Archaeological excavations at Happisburgh in Norfolk have found evidence that ancient humans lived in Britain almost one million years ago, but so far the earliest evidence of people in the West Midlands is around 500,000 years old. Some of the best evidence we have of these early inhabitants is in the stone tools that they left behind. The hand axe pictured would have been made and used by Neanderthals. It may date to the last group of Neanderthals to live in the West Midlands some 50,000 years ago.
