Kitchen Gadgets and Accessories In recent years the Kitchen has become the social hub when entertaining and depending on your culinary abilities, it’s the place to unwind after work by whipping up something your mother used to make, or challenge yourself by dedicating an entire Sunday to creating three courses. And most importantly of all it is the room where the cake is!

in the morning and last thing at night.

How to create a hanging basket

B Place your chosen hanging basket ton to a flat surface or place it in a bucket to hold it still. Every hanging basket needs a liner, and there are lots of varieties to choose from, moss , fibre or co-co.

B Once your liner is in place, add an extra layer of black polythene to help retain water. Make a number of slits through the liner paper and the polythene to allow for slow drainage and to use as planting holes.

B Push

bedding plants from the outside through the

holes so the root is on the inside and cover this with compost, containing a slow release fertiliser - a tub and basket compost works well for this.

B Then

place some more bedding plants inside the

basket, using the tallest in the centre, and soak them

B When you’re thinking about colour, choosing bedding plants in all one colour can make just as big an impact as choosing a variety of colours and different plants. One great look is mixing standard Petunias with trailing Petunias to create a cascade of colour.

B Finally don’t forget to deadhead the flowers in your basket throughout the summer so that it stays in flower for longer. Wyevale Garden Centres sells lots of varieties in a widerange of styles. Here's what you need to know when adding

windows or skylights

Is your home chilly and dark in winter, or stuffy and dark in the summer? If your home has too small or too few windows, it can be difficult to get the natural light and ventilation you crave, and need for good health. You may look around your home and think, "this place could stand some more windows," but have no clue if it's feasible to add them or how to get started.

Club-tailed Dragonfly © Mike Averill

club¯ tailed dragonflies I’ve got a new challenge. This year, I want to see a common clubtail dragonfly. You may think ‘so what’; head to any body of water, even some garden ponds, and I’ll spot dragonflies. But this is a very special dragonfly!

W

however, and there’s a chance you may spy ones that

Dragonfly larvae spend their formative years in water – hunting and growing. The larvae are rather ferocious looking creatures (albeit only a few centimetres long) with mouthparts that spring from their heads to grab food in a fashion similar to a horror film. Young clubtail dragonflies spend up to five years in the water - in strong contrast to the matter of weeks they spend zipping through the air as an adult. The youngsters need relatively slow-flowing water and favour meanders in rivers where silt levels are deepest; this allows them to bury themselves into the mud, where they can hide before taking their prey by surprise. This underwater life also keeps them hidden from us – it’s not until they emerge that our fun starts. When dragonfly youngsters clamber from the water onto a reed stem, a twig or similar, they ‘crack’ out of

areas to hunt for food and to find a mate. When they’re in the woodlands, they tend to fly quite high in the canopy of trees so it becomes even harder to see them.

are returning to establish breeding territories. Common clubtails are relatively easy to identify. The young adults are yellow and black; the yellow turns to green as they age but the males retain bright yellow spots along the sides of their abdomens. But the really distinctive feature is that they’re the only UK dragonfly whose eyes don’t meet! It sounds a little odd but, at a distance, this could mean the difference between ‘what dragonfly was that’ and ‘that was a clubtail’! Common clubtails are only found in a few places in the UK so we’re lucky to have them here in Worcestershire. Despite threats of excessive dredging, badly-timed management of riverbanks and pollution, their numbers remain relatively stable; let’s hope it stays that way! beEf barranca For over 15 years Salvatore Barranca has been a personality in the restaurant at Stone Manor hotel. Many could have assumed that with the Hogarths taking over in February 2015, and Executive Head Chef, Paul Harris joining the team that some changes may be about to happen. Far from it, Helena and Andy Hogarth have gone about restoring Hogarths Stone Manor to its welcoming best and possibly the best quote so far has been “you have kept the Manor, but given it a modern twist” None more so than in The Dining Room “The Heart of the Manor” where a modern British style of cooking has been complimented with dishes such as Beef Barranca – a flambé dish named after Salvatore Barranca himself in recognition of his hard work and reputation with the hotels regular customers.

Ingredients

B 2 oz. x 3 beef medallions B 2 oz. finely diced white onion B 2 oz. ¼ button mushrooms B 3fl oz. thin red wine jus B 2fl oz. Grovewood farm double cream

claims tea as their own - the beverage, originally in its green (unfermented/aerated) form spread initially as a health tonic, medicine and aid to meditation (to keep the monks awake) from China to Japan, Indonesia then Holland, mainland EU and then to old Blighty. At the time tea arrived, we were initially a nation of beer drinkers (as the water wasn't safe to drink), and then gin arrived. Catherine of Braganza (the French wife of King Charles II) is credited with bringing tea to the British court and from then it spread through the aristocracy. At the time coffee was seen as too protestant and Teutonic, coffee too Roman Catholic and Spanish! Originally more expensive than gold tea was stored in caddies - tin lined wooden boxes - that were locked by the lady of the house and spoonful’s doled out at tea time. Afternoon tea was the height of fashion and like all fashions soon spread through the classes and the length & breadth of Britain. The men gathered in male only coffee houses for trade (the beginning of many corporations and insurance

So tea became the beverage of the UK, available everywhere both on the street but more importantly at home. Had a tough day - cup of tea? Catch up with friends - cup of Tea? An army marches on its stomach but its spirits are maintained by the humble cuppa. In both WW1 and WW2 the establishment ensured urns of tea were not far from the trenches of the front.... And so to today. Despite the fact that we have a coffee house seemingly on every corner (they do serve tea!) we are still a nation of tea drinkers by numbers and volume. Tea is the second most consumed beverage on the planet - after water. The highest consumers? Our Irish neighbours! We are now lucky enough to have all sorts of tea available in shops and online - black, green, herbal. Tea is a healthy beverage and many studies are showing its positive impacts on heart disease, stroke and diabetes - 3 of the major killers in the UK. But it's still our cup of tea. keeping active Start/Finish: Walk starts/ends at Great Malvern Railway Station. Public Transport: Nearest Railway Station at Great Malvern. Please check current timetables. Parking: There are parking spaces in roads nearby but please do not use Station Car Park or immediate vicinity required for rail travellers. Please respect local residents by parking sensitively. O/S Map: Explorer Map 190. Distance: The main walk is 9 miles. Shorter options approx 5.5 miles. Time: Allow all day to do main walk. Shorter walk approx. 3 hours. Refreshments: After leaving Malvern there are no shops or eating places until you get to Hanley Swan or you could take a picnic. Terrain: This walk is almost level with a few gentle slopes, some steps, stiles, gates and two planked bridges. Apart from a walk around Malvern or Hanley Swan, it is unsuitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. Dogs on leads near livestock and traffic please. History: Once you leave the outskirts of Malvern, it is a very rural walk with historic barns and farmhouses and never far from the Malvern Hills until you reach the pretty village of Hanley Swan with its pond and village shops. On the return walk you pass through Blackmore Park, the country seat of the ‘Hornyold’ Family that in the 19th century owned most of the land visible from this walk. The large Country residence was lost in a fire but the ‘home farm’ still remains. Hanley Swan developed around the cross-roads and is a small village with a big heart. The circular walk is bordered by a disused railway line that ran from Great Malvern Station to Upton upon Severn and on to Ashchurch, Tewkesbury on the Worcester to Cheltenham Line.

1: From main entrance of Great Malvern Station, walk up Station Approach towards Malvern Hills, turn left and beneath Railway Bridge on Clarence Road, (past ‘Morgan’ PH) onto Court Road. Turn right to Junction with Thirlstane Road, walk beneath railway-bridge onto common-land and follow railway on left as far as Peachfield Road. 2: Turn left and walk over railway-bridge and down to St. Andrew’s Road (notice Victorian Pillar Box). Almost opposite here, on right, is disused railway line from Great Malvern Station via Upton-upon-Severn to Ashchurch, Tewkesbury. Turn right near bus shelter and walk at right-angles to road, you will walk along track-bed of this old railway for 1/3 mile to steps leading down embankment. Path continues through old iron-gate and alongside railway to stile near Warren Farm. Turn right beneath old railway arch and immediately left to follow disused line for

short while before it deviates south-eastwards towards Upton upon Severn. Walk proceeds to Hanley Road. 3: At junction turn left passing old cottages on left and Brickbarns Farm entrance on right. Cross to Shuttlefast Lane (bridleway). House on left at this junction was Station Master’s House at Malvern Wells ‘Hanley Road’ Station (walk follows lane for a mile). 4: Turn left at sharp bend away from hills to cross line of old railway, one last time, just before Blackmore Park Road. Take bridleway opposite. Shorter Walk: Just past riding stables and industrial units take the footpath on left that leads to Hanley Road (B4209) then crosses to farm opposite and via ‘Blackmoor Wood’ veering left, across concrete drive, to exit on common-land near Poolbrook Road. Either walk up Peachfield Road to point ‘2’ then retrace outward route to Great Malvern Railway Station or walk in front of cottages in Hayes Bank Road, past St. Andrew’s Church and along common through Poolbrook to Barnard’s Green (point 10). Main Walk (continued): 5: Follow ‘Bridleway’ (dogs on leads please) through series of ‘levered’ gates to the Welland Road. The final section of track passes a quaint thatched cottage on right. 6: Turn left passing Hanley Swan Village Hall, Primary School and ‘Ewe and Lamb’ Green to reach cross-roads in Hanley Swan. It is worth spending time relaxing at Village Pond, supporting village shop, butcher and ‘The Swan’ PH and restaurant. 7: Just beyond pond, turn left past ‘British Legion’ clubhouse and follow track for over a mile through ‘Blackmore Park’, passing ‘Stable Farm’ then up moderate slope to ridge path, reputed to be an old Roman Road. 8: Cross green track-way to footpath opposite and walk down slope of ridge forking left along southern boundary of Sewage Works. At next fork, turn right across rough ground to exit over stile into Mill Lane. Notice Old Mill on right. Walk along lane to Guarlford Road. 9: Turn left and walk along common, past ‘Bluebell’ PH and Restaurant (open all day). Cross with care and walk past ‘Hastings Pond’ then up through the shops of Barnard’s Green. 10: Walk towards bus shelter clock then take Avenue Road uphill to Great Malvern Railway Station. Everyone who goes along to the valuation day will receive a free appraisal of their items – even if their antiques are not chosen to go forward for auction. Flog It has made many significant finds over its fifteen series, including in North Lincolnshire a rare Aboriginal Broad Shield that had been kept hidden away in a viewer’s wardrobe which was brought along to a valuation day, it went on to sell at auction for £30,000!

Paul Martin, the shows presenter said “I’m delighted to be bringing Flog It to Croome. Last time we visited we received a really warm welcome and I hope when we return in May as many people as possible will come along to see us with their items for valuation.” The BBC plan to transmit the four editions of Flog It featuring Croome, near Pershore, Worcester, Worcestershire, WR8 9DW within a year of recording. Paul Martin will be joined at the valuation day by on screen experts Adam Partridge, Natasha Raskin and David Fletcher.

Flog It also discovered an unusual Royal Doulton Spook figurine in Blackpool which had been bought at a car
