Having been a butcher for 40 years, Pete and his team includes two thirty somethings who came to him as apprentices and never left. There is an apprentice on his team now and Pete feels very strongly – as we all do – that butchers have a duty to support the upcoming generation of butchers so these skills are not lost. After 40 years in the same shop Pete has great relationships with all suppliers, including the local small abattoir, which will always source rare breed pigs when he has none of his own available. staying stylish this spring Transitional spring weather can be one of the most awkward times of the year to dress for, especially in this country! Perhaps it’s just a bit too warm to wear your winter coat, but a tad too chilly to slip your sandals on. Here are our tips on how to be stylish this spring: 5. Darker bags can look too heavy for spring and summer time outfits so now is the time to have a good look for a bag that complements your March to September wardrobe! Equally investing in a stylish pair of colourful shoes in one of your wow colours makes you stand out from the crowd of black and brown boots. 6. Carry a stylish umbrella this spring. You might have to google to find one that is really you. Look for quirky or traditional styles in your favourite colours to start conversations whilst blocking torrential spring showers! 7. Try a different make-up look using eye shadow palettes and lipsticks in colours that really suit you will change up a winter outfit completely, so if you think it’s still a bit cold to change your wardrobe then this is how to start the transition! 8. A spring jacket or cardigan in one of your wow 1. Spring is all about colour as fresh, vibrant shades explode onto the High Street. Experiment with colour in unexpected, striking combinations and contrasts. Try pairing different neutrals for a sophisticated look, or team neutrals with a colour for impact. 2. A patterned shirt or skirt in your style is perfect for spring - try something sophisticated but striking for dramatics, or a pattern that is funky and neat for gamines! Patterns are a great way to combine different colour combinations together in one outfit. Try and find a pattern which incorporates your wow colours. 3. Sunglasses will be needed once again this season so look around for a style that really suits you. Make sure the style is flattering - these days the shapes and styles on offer are endless. 4. Invest in a transitional trench coat which you can wear year after year choose a great neutral colour from your seasonal palette so you can wear it with everything. Alternatively, boyfriend blazers, denim and bomber jackets for casual tailoring continue to be on-trend with new added details such as ruffles, embroidery and embellishments.

colours is a sure way to keep the cooler evenings at bay. Make sure though you don’t just buy the right colour but the right length, size, cut and shape. The current trend for oversized outerwear pieces and soft-volume tailored separates styled with crisp shirts and blouses and tactile knits make for a versatile look. 9. Swap your jeans for a skirt when it is finally warm enough to get some sun to those legs! Different skirt lengths suit different bodies and personalities so wearing the right length can make or break an outfit. Are you a mini, midi or a maxi?! 10. Volume sleeves, ruffle trims and tie-knot details, structured silhouettes and asymmetric hemlines are all on-trend but stay true to what makes you feel comfortable and fabulous – we don’t all suit ruffles!

Professor Sir Muir Gray said: “Many diseases that impact
people’s health and shorten their active lives can be prevented. “Currently 42% of adults in midlife are living with at least one long-term health condition that increases their risk of early death and disability. “Although it has been customary to blame people for their ‘lifestyle’ we now appreciate that we need to take into account the environmental pressures that make it difficult to make healthy choices, having to sit eight hours a day at work for example, and then drive an hour home." The new campaign from Public Health England aims to help adults move more, eat well, drink less and be smoke free. People who are interested in switching up their lifestyle can take a new online health quiz called ‘How Are You’, which provides personalised recommendations based on a person’s results. www.nhs.uk/oneyou/hay#H1cjvPx93EPyC03H.97 Professor Dame Sally Davies, chief medical officer for Public Health England, said: “It is important people of all ages feel able to prioritise their health so they can lead long and healthy lives. “We all have the power to shape our future health by making simple and small changes now. The One You campaign acknowledges that this can be difficult and is there to help make these changes easier.” Professor Kevin Fenton, national director for the health body, said: “For the first time, Public Health England is launching a campaign that talks to adults directly about all of the things they can do to improve their health." @WORCESTERSHIRENOW FIND US ON FACEBOOK www.nowmagazines.co.uk

The history of asparagus We all know that the Vale of Evesham is famous for asparagus. In 2012 the chairman of the British Asparagus Festival, this year 23rd April – 21st June, asked the Badsey Society for help with the history of asparagus growing in the region. They in turn used a book by local author Terry Sparrow, Digging for a Living and his knowledge to publish the following information.
A
ccording to the Ministry of Agriculture Bulletin from energy, not artificial heat, to stimulate crop growth, and the use of December 1932, asparagus was known to the ancient water-capture whereby water run-off from the farm is channelled Greeks and Romans, but was not introduced to England using a network of grass-lined waterways that are then captured until the 16th century, when it was probably brought in into an on-farm reservoir and the water used again on the farm,

Young, secretary of the Board of Agriculture, visited the town asparagus ready this early as it means M&S customers can enjoy during that year and his book A Six Months Tour of the North of this lovely delicacy a whole month longer than the traditional England, published in 1771, tells us that asparagus was carried season. We really want to drive the British asparagus industry from Evesham to Bath and Bristol. A letter from an Evesham forwards and do this in the most sustainable and natural way." writer to the Morning Chronicle newspaper, 30 August 1782, also mentions asparagus sent from the town to Bath and Bristol. W Pitt in his General View of the Agriculture of the County of Worcester 1813 saw several flats of asparagus in the fields. In 1830 the Royal

Horticultural Society awarded a medal to Anthony New for his fine specimens of asparagus exhibited at shows of the Vale of Evesham Society in this and the previous year. However, all references to Evesham asparagus during the late 18th and early 19th centuries appear to relate to the town. There is no suggestion that it was cultivated so long ago in any of the surrounding villages. But by 1866, and possibly earlier, it seems that the crop was grown in Badsey, although it is practically certain that it would have been on a very small scale, as market gardening in the village was then in its infancy. In 1866 the Hereford Journal advertised for sale: 'Asparagus roots, yearling and two years old, at one shilling per hundred. Apply to J Jones, Badsey, Evesham'. With the rapid expansion of the market gardening industry in Badsey and other neighbouring villages during the last quarter of the 19th century, so too did the acreage of asparagus increase. Please visit www.badseysociety.uk for more information. British asparagus is not normally in season until late April/ early May but farmers are always looking to innovate, John Chinn from Ross on Wye has pioneered an new way of growing British asparagus to extend the traditional UK season. This crop was seen for the first time this year in Marks and Spencer almost a month earlier than tradionally grown spears. He grows the vegetable under tunnels and uses new cold resistant varieties, so the crop doesn’t need to be heated to launch earlier. The new production system also includes harnessing the sun's

Start/Finish: The Walk starts near ‘The Boot Inn’ at Flyford Flavel. Public Transport: The nearest Railway Station is at Worcester with occasional buses to the Flyford Flavel area. Consult ‘Traveline’. Parking: Please street park sensitively and not by Church or School. O/S Map: Explorer Map 204. Distance: 6.5 miles. Shorter 5 mile route shown on sketch-map. Time: Allow all day to do the main walk to fully enjoy the countryside. Refreshments: You will need a picnic and drinks as there are no shops in the vicinity. ‘The Boot Inn’ at the start of the walk welcomes organised ‘Walking Groups’ and will do their best to cater for their needs if telephoned in advance (01386) 462658. Terrain: This walk is gently undulating with a few gradual climbs. There are numerous stiles, some rather challenging. There are also many gates and a number of footbridges. Boots are recommended due to uneven paths and muddy areas - they are essential in winter (Winter Wellie Walk) as bridleways and field entrances can be very muddy. Grafton Wood with its Blackthorn is home to the only Brown Hairstreak Butterfly colony in the Midlands - but this is an autumn species. The woodland has large areas of bluebells in late spring. Sadly this walk is not suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. History: This walk goes through a number of small settlements with historic barns, timber-framed buildings, moated manor-houses and beautiful Dormston Dovecote for you to look out for along the way. There are several Churches and Chapels around the route. From up on the higher slopes there are views to The Malvern Hills, Bredon Hill, May Hill and The Cotswolds. The ‘Piddle Brook’ traverses the area. ‘The Boot Inn’ has parts dating back to 13th century.

(Pretty timber-framed Church worth detour to right). 2: Cross lane, taking narrow path between two hedges, through gate into fields. Walk straight ahead to large gate near ‘Court Farm’. Turn left (hedge on left) down to stile and gate at bottom and out onto busy A442 Worcester to Alcester Road. Cross to pavement. Turn right and walk ¼ mile to second bridleway on left which avoids numerous stiles. This bridleway crosses two large fields with hedge on left, over footbridge across stream
through metal gate. You are at Dormston. (Chapel worth ¼ mile detour to right). ‘Moat Farm’ with its beautiful 17th century dovecote is opposite. 3: From Moat Farm, walk south-westwards along Dormston Lane to road junction. Cross to old ditch and tree lined ‘green lane’ that once linked Stock Wood near Inkberrow to Huddington. Follow this track (muddy in parts) as far as cross-roads with ‘Wychavon Way’. 4: Note: Shorter walk goes left along eastern edge of Grafton Wood to point 9. Main walk continues through woodland strip to lane at Woodend Farm. 5: Turn left along lane for 1/3 mile taking care of occasional traffic. On outside of bend take second path on left to cut across corner. 6: Cross ditch and stile aiming for Grafton Flyford Church. Veer right of ‘Rectory Farm’ out into lane. Walk 200 yards to footpath on left. 7: Go through gate and diagonally left over stiled footbridge down to Church. Retrace steps back to stile near Church Farm, turning right down track and through pedestrian gate. Pass large barn on left, through small gate at end of farmyard and straight down field to another small gate. 8: Cross planked footbridge, through small gate then walk down field (hedge on left) to small metal gate. Walk diagonally left across field towards Grafton Wood. Go through gate into woodland reserve – ‘Midland’ home of 'Brown Hairstreak Butterfly’. The walk adheres to main path up slope. If you wish to explore reserve, please do not stray from marked paths. No picnics or litter and keep dogs on leads. Main walk turns right at top and remains in woodland. 9: Short walk joins here, enter woodland through kiss-gate and turn left along bridleway. Go through gate into old orchard with pond on left. This is ‘Wychavon Way’. Keep to hedge on left, across car park and through gate beyond (dogs on leads). Take ‘drive’ round to right following ‘Wychavon Way’ downhill, through small gate at bottom and right to gated footbridge over Piddle Brook. broadway's coaching history The mid-seventeenth century was the beginning of an exciting chapter in the history of Broadway in the Cotswolds. The decline of the wool industry had damaged the local economy but coaching led to a new prosperity that continued until the

coming of the railways in the nineteenth century.
n 1657 the London newspaper Mercurius Politicus advertised a coaching route between London and Chester and then, not long after, the Shropshire route which left the Angel Inn on Broad Street in Ludlow travelling to Worcester,
Oxford and London via Broadway Hill (Fish Hill). The first crude coaches were built from in the 16th century although these were little better than covered wagons generally drawn by four horses, with leather straps, crude chairs and no suspension. Coaches travelled on poor quality, rutted tracks and unmade roads of the time at around 5 miles an hour. There was political support for the development of coaching when Queen Elizabeth I (1533-1603), wanted to boost free movement. She encouraged accommodation for travellers, the building of inns every 10 miles. Roads, however, were poor and water remained the only comfortable means of travel but this was a limited option. During cold or wet weather, travel was often impossible. Coaching improved and became more viable when the Dutch invented and perfected springs between 1564 and 1584. From then onwards, despite a brief resurgence of the plague in 1590, which hindered movement, coaches started to become a significant form of public transportation.
The High Street route was an alternative way. Its width is testament to its role in the movement of sheep. Over time, from around 1660, it became one of the major routes. It was a place to change horses, to service coaches and passengers, to provide shelter and physical and spiritual sustenance before the next leg of the journey. The coaching routes and stops along the way led to the establishment of many coaching inns. In Broadway there were 34 recorded establishments - inns, beer sellers or similar – which provided refreshments to the passengers and those driving the coaches. The names of these include the Angel (now Broadway Museum and Art Gallery, the White Hart (now the Lygon), the Coach and Horses, The Bell Inn, The Spinning Wheel

is an explorer's Island with curiosities of history and folklore just waiting to be discovered.
ortland was the host venue for the sailing events for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and is an ideal place to visit for a host of activities. The waters provide the perfect setting
for angling, diving and sailing. Portland's unique geology and its position are ideal for a wide variety of birds, animals and plant life. So, if you enjoy bird-watching then come and indulge your passion, plus there are fifty seven species of butterfly that occur in the British Isles and over half of these can be seen on Portland! You can also discover a wide variety of plants, including many rare species! Of course this part of Dorset is famous for fossil hunting. The rocks that make up the cliffs are rich in fossils of animals that swam in the Jurassic seas. This part of the Jurassic coastline erodes rapidly resulting in thousands of fossils being fed onto the beaches from the landslides in the surrounding cliffs, especially after winter storms. The remains that have been found here since the eighteenth century represent one of the richest slices of life in Jurassic times anywhere in the world! Joining a guided fossil hunting walk is the safest and best way to hunt for fossils. Travel east of Portland to Lulworth Cove - this is the extraordinary ancient fossil forest and in this area dinosaur footprints and track ways have been discovered. Always consult tide tables before collecting fossils; it is advisable that you hunt for fossils on a falling tide. On Portland itself, there is much to see and do. Portland Bill lighthouse standing on the southern tip of the island is still in full working order and is a grade II listed building. Standing 135 feet high, the lighthouse is open for guided tours and has new a visitor centre opened to the public in 2015. Tours can be taken lasting approximately 45 minutes and lead 153 steps all the way to the top. Portland museum is located in the ancient hamlet of Wakeham above Church Ope cove. Founded in 1930, one of the museum’s cottages ‘Avice’s cottage’ was the inspiration for Thomas Hardy’s 1897 novel The Well-Beloved. Items connected to Thomas Hardy are on display in the ‘Mary Stopes Cottage’. The museum

Cove Holiday Park is a tranquil, relaxing place nestling in cliffs overlooking the sea. It rests in a quiet cove steeped in history. Situated in the Pennsylvania Castle Estate, it is overlooked by the Castle, which was built in 1790. The Park has easy access to explore Portland and the Jurassic Coast. It is just five minutes from the Olympic Sailing Academy, which means you can enjoy the benefits of sailing in Olympic-standard waters with facilities to match. If you prefer diving or fishing or just quiet walks along dramatic coastline, it is all on your doorstep.
