Make the most of an empty nest by creating the ultimate 'boomer cave' The children are off to university or living in homes of their own, and you have regained a big chunk of your house. It's time to indulge and transform your home with a space especially designed for you. Step 2: Find comfortable furniture There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to a boomer cave, so it's common to forego the traditional couch and set up the area with multiple reclining chairs. This gives everyone their own space to relax and enjoy the show. When setting up the room, ensure the arrangement gives each viewer an uninterrupted sightline to the screen but

For Head Gardener Jasmine Groves, and her team of staff and volunteers, looking after the beautiful gardens is a year round job, but autumn is a particularly rewarding time. “As the first autumn mists roll in and the leaves begin to turn it is one of my favourite times to be at Witley.” comments Jasmine, “I love the autumnal colour, but for those looking for the last blast of summer colour there is plenty of brightness in the East Parterre garden right up until the first

The best way to explore the gardens is on one of the monthly guided tours with the gardeners, and the 23rd September tour offers the chance to discover the fabulous flora and fauna that thrive at Witley in the company of the experts who know them best. They hover or circle above water, looking for suitable prey, and then plunge straight down onto it, feet outstretched in front of them to grasp the fish before heading for a solid perch to sit down on and eat their prize. DRESS FOR THE OCCASION We’ve all been there. You arrive at a social event and, too late... you realise that your clothes are all wrong. It’s mortifying. So here’s an easy guide to event dressing for late summer. Check the etiquette

Even at formal functions, you don’t have to wear a dress. A

A quick word about weddings Always check how formal the wedding is going to be, a country wedding, for example, will call for a different dress code to a city wedding. On grass, stilettos and kitten heels won’t be your friend and you’ll spend the whole day toppling backwards. Fortunately, block heels are bang on trend at the moment and flats will be everywhere this autumn, so you have plenty of choice. These days, hats are optional. If they don’t fit your style, they’re not essential. But if you’re comfortable with hats, they can certainly add something special to an outfit. But do be careful about the perils of “social kissing” in a wide brimmed hat. It can be tricky! Remember the skin rule This one’s especially important for work parties but it applies to any event. Show off legs or décolletage - but not both, otherwise you’re in danger of losing authority.

trouser suit can be perfect - and if it works with your signature style, culottes are popular at the moment. The key is to understand the dress code and apply your style accordingly. Minimise your handbag A beautiful handbag is always good, but it’s best to minimise the contents - perhaps a retractable lip brush, compact, tissues and spare tights. Try and make sure everything you take out of your handbag is beautiful (apart from the spare tights!). And finally, if the weather looks dodgy, bring an umbrella in your best `wow’ colour. Have fun!

unless you have met face to face. If you are interested in someone specific, arrange a meeting. Discuss your needs and ideas, review portfolios, ask for references; you can’t be too careful. Not only is it important that your chosen photographer and videographer are talented, you will also need to find someone with whom you connect; select someone who understands your flair, and the vision of your wedding. Wedding Flowers Flowers have come to play an important role in wedding decorations. The groom, for instance, will wear a flower that features in his bride’s bouquet. This tradition stems from the Medieval Knight wearing his Lady’s colours. Every flower has a different symbol and meaning. Red roses, for instance, are popular with brides the world over as they symbolise love. Flowers can also aid in giving your venue a real wow factor, but with so many different floral options, where should you start? With dozens of florists to choose from, choosing one to create your wedding flowers can be a difficult task. Your floral arrangements will be one of the most important features of the decoration, so it is important to choose your designer carefully. the bridal party from where they got ready to the ceremony venue. This will include the bride, her maid of honour, bridesmaids, flower girls and parents of the bride. If there are too many people in your bridal party to fit in one vehicle, it is possible to make two trips, or, of course, hire two vehicles. Whatever you choose, it must be timed to precision. Discuss with your car hire company exactly what will happen if there is a breakdown or other emergency. Even though it is more than likely that everything will run smoothly on the day, it is always best to be prepared for the worst.

Groomswear It can be all too easy to focus so much on what you will be wearing for the big day that you forget about your poor groom. It is only fair to let him in on at least a bit of the action, and what better place to start than his suit? Whether you are choosing his suit together (advisable, considering how unlikely it is that he will take into account colour, theme and style) or whether he is selecting it himself, here are a few tips on where to start. What time is the wedding? If it is before the sun goes

This is important because clothing appropriate for daytime weddings differs dramatically from clothing appropriate in the evenings. theme. If you do opt to hire a professional, a ‘test run’ will often be included in the package. When you go for this appointment, be sure to walk around with your styled hair. Ensure that it is comfortable, and likely to stay in place for the whole day. A general rule is, the more simple the better. Lots of hair pins can sometimes be uncomfortable, and a very intricate do may be too delicate for the wear and tear of a wedding day. Furthermore, it is often a good idea to make an appointment with your chosen designer in their salon for your big day. Hair stylists and make-up artists are often most comfortable with their own tools and equipment around them. While discussing possible styles with your stylist, keep these factors in mind. Bridal Make-Up Hiring a professional to apply your make-up for your big day is a popular choice with brides. Ensure that the artist will offer a trial beforehand. Discuss your ideas prior to the wedding and make sure that you are both on the same page. Many brides opt for a natural look on their big day, although some prefer to go for a glamorous style. This option is becoming increasingly popular, which is logical. Often for special occasions, women will change their clothes, jewellery and

There are no pre-defined rules about which hand you should wear your wedding band on, and the tradition varies around the world. However, in the UK it is customary to wear your wedding band on the ring finger of your left hand. Traditionally, the ring is worn on the third finger of this hand although it is often mistakenly referred to as the fourth finger. This custom stems from a legend that a vein straight from the heart is connected directly to this finger. Although scientifically this is not true, it is a lovely tradition. Furthermore, practically speaking this is the finger you will use least, particularly if you are right handed.

Please use ‘Traveline’ and local bus timetables. Parking:- There is a large Car Park with WC behind the High Street. O/S Map: Explorer Map 205 Distance: The main walk is 6.5 miles. Shorter Walk – 5 miles. Time: Allow all day for the main walk as there is plenty to see along the way and the Museum featuring Roman Alcester is worth a visit. Refreshments: Enjoy a picnic en route. No shops along the way but plenty of cafes, pubs and food shops in Alcester. Terrain: The walk is largely flat with a few insignificant climbs. There is some necessary lane walking, including the busy ‘Trench Lane’. Strong shoes or boots are recommended. Poles can be useful but most paths well maintained. Wheelchair users can explore Alcester and its excellent museum. Large-wheeled pushchairs may manage a walk around Alcester and to Oversley Green and back. History: Alcester is rich in Roman history with many local finds on display in the Heritage Centre. This market town with its Church and Town Hall has some beautiful examples of timber-framed buildings, with the picturesque ‘Malt Mill Lane’ being the jewel in the crown.

1: From Town Hall, walk down street to right of Church then across front of Church to view High Street, once a large market place. Cross to walk down pretty ‘Malt Mill Lane’ tucked away in corner.
