Publisher’s note... Hello! Readers It’s been a month of unrelenting rain here in Myanmar that would have dampened even the strongest of spirits. But don’t let monsoon weather spoil your plans, because with it comes many hidden rainbows. During this time, crowds tend to abandon the usually-packed hotspots, offering more reflective travellers a less frenetic experience. The season can also help you save some cash, as hotel, tour and airlines companies roll out promotions and other discounts. The rain brings out the country’s natural beauty; the parched paddy fields of the dry season become lush and vibrant, while rivers flow with renewed vigour. Whether you are going to the breathtakingly beautiful Shan or Karen states, or exotic Mandalay, you will uncover unparalled wonders - as long as you travel with the rain and not against it. So be a real traveller and enjoy this month issue’s which we’ve put together despite the downpours in this green and golden land.
Sincerely,
Yamin Htin Aung Publisher

Golden Rock Pagoda by Ma Thanegi

K
yaik Htiyo, known to the outside world as the Golden Rock, is an incredible site in the Mon State, in the Southern part of Myanmar. Decades before it was accessible to tourists, this almost magical place has been a favourite pilgrimage for the countrymen of Myanmar. It is a huge boulder perched precariously on the very edge of a high cliff, with a small golden stupa erected on top. No one can be sure when it was built but legends take it many centuries back to a time just after the death of Lord Buddha. This is one legend that is firmly believed by the devote pilgrims who had been flocking there for years, some making countless annual trips. Legends go that many centuries ago, a hermit had obtained a hair relic of the Lord Buddha, and he kept it inside his own topknot. When he was about to pass away, he gave the relic to a great king, with instructions for it to be enshrined in a pagoda placed on top of a boulder which must be in the shape of the hermit’s head. The king, who had magical powers, searched far and wide for the boulder and finally found the perfect one deep under the ocean. A golden boat which brought the boulder to the top of the cliff turned to stone afterwards and is still seen some 300 meters away from the boulder. A pagoda is built on it as well, to commemorate the event. It

is called Kyaik Than-Ban, the Pagoda of the Stone Boat. A small golden stupa was hen built on top of the balanced boulder, which, according to folklore, was at the time, not even touching the cliff. People say that it floated with enough space ‘for a hen to nest.’ Now, it touches the top of the cliff but it is said that a length of thread can be passed through underneath the boulder to prove that it is not glued down. Men are allowed to walk across a small bridge over a chasm to place gold leaf on the rock. One can either trek up to the summit from the base camp town called Kinbun, which takes about four hours through wonderful scenery, or take a bus for a quicker trip. Sure-footed porters will carry up your luggage or even carry you up in a cradle. There are inns and hotels in the vicinity. Sunsets and sunrises at the pagoda are spectacular: the mountain seems adrift in a purple mist, the completely gilded rock shimmering in the light of candles lit by devotees. On special nights such as the Full Moon of October or New Year’s Eve, nine thousand oil lamps or candles are lit on the platform and garlands of flowers offered to the shrine. In the vicinity there are other shrines and pagodas but none as splendid as this pagoda. The other sites each have their own legends and the folklore is testimony to the devotion to tradition and the deep religious beliefs of the people.

Traditional Handmade
Toys By: Ma Thanegi
Toys of the Myanmar children originated from the countryside where a grandfather might have whittled a cow or elephant, form a bird whistle out of clay or soak some old newspapers in glue, dry into required shapes and finally paint them to create colourful tigers or horses. These types of folk toys especially made of painted papiér-mâché can be seen at pagoda festival fairs or sold from shops along the walkways to pagodas. In a few places near Mandalay there are annual fairs for toys, such
as at the Oh-bo Quarters, where terracotta pots for various uses are made. Every year in August just at the beginning of the Spirit Festival atTaungpyone, Oh-bo erupts with stall upon stall of terracotta toy pots and pans painted in gay colours, and at the end of that powerful Spirit Festival another one begins at Yadana Gu of Amarapura which again overflows with flower and toy pots shops. In March bird, fish and animal figures woven out of strips of dry palm leaves stained in coloured dyes

are sold at the Shwe Sar Yan Pagoda some miles north of Mandalay. Down south at the Golden Rock pagoda, bamboo stems are decorated with burnt designs and cut and attached to form lizards and snakes that wriggle. The toys are typically based on culture values of the people. The bull that helps man plough the earth to produce food is a favourite, as are elephants that have won ancient wars for the kings and later on, dragged out logs from jungles inaccessible to machines.
These bull and elephant toys are made of papiér-maché, as are the pair of owls that sit side by side. The owls painted a happy orange or covered in gold foil, also bring luck to the household. The most representative of the Myanmar spirit is surely the papiér-mâché Pyit Taing Daung, the knock-a-bout toy, an egg-like being with a sweet smile. However hard it is thrown or knocked around, it remains upright, ever gracious and ever serene, full of spiritual strength in facing the realities of life without qualm.

Images of
the Buddha By: Ma Thanegi
The most commonly seen Buddha image depicts the Buddha in a seated posture with the fingers of his right hand touching the earth, symbolising calling the earth to witness victory over Mara, the manifestation of evil. The postures of other seated images include the Buddha with the hands folded on the lap in a meditative pose or both hands held up to symbolise the preaching position. There are also reclining images to symbolise either relaxation or imminent death. Standing images show the Buddha levitated in the sky or on a journey with his disciple monks. Rarer are the crowned images and the squat, seated images, which some people believe give protection from harm. The faces, torsos and general style of Buddha images in Myanmar differ from place to place and from one period of history to the next.

Bagan Style The images from the early 11th to the 12th centuries have full, strong bodies and square faces with rounded, prominent chins. The lips are full and set deep in the face. The ear tips do not touch the shoulders. Robes are portrayed in a simple way, with few creases. Shan Style Shan images have arched eyebrows, which are sometimes rounded almost like semi-circles, a slender nose and thin, delicate lips. The torso, limbs and fingers are slim and graceful. The most famous Shan images are made of cloth moulded with lacquer over a woven bamboo base. The surface is then gilded and sometimes faux gems are embedded in exquisite glass mosaic embellishments. Mon Style The faces are delicate and beautiful and some have large, flat ears, similar to Rakhine images. The torsos are more slender than Rakhineimages. The folds of the robes are not overly ornate or full. Rakhine Style Most images in Rakhine temples were carved from stone. The bodies and faces are massive, with strong shoulders and heavy jaws. Facial features, such as the eyebrows and lips, are gently curving and beautifully formed. The ears are large and flat and the tips touch the shoulders. Robes are portrayed simply, with few creases. Inwa Style Inwa era images of the 15th to 17th centuries have facial features that resemble the Shan style, with arched eyebrows and thin lips, but the faces or torsos are often less slender. The faces are slightly squared but the small rounded chins give the images a gentle appearance. The folds of the robes are not ornate or full. Mandalay Style The Mandalay style image has a more natural look with a full but oval face and without stylised features. The nose is straight, the eyes downcast as in almost all other images, and the lips are slightly smiling. Most are carved from alabaster. The folds of the robes are usually ornate or full, with curling edges.

Myanmar is a land of festivals. They reflect the cultural diversity of the country’s many ethnic groups. The Taung Pyone festival this month is a colourful event celebrating the traditions and beliefs of the Myanmar people and paying tribute to the venerated nats, or spirits. Myanmar people believe that nats can bring good omens, foresee the future and provide guidance.Taung Pyone, which dates back to the Bagan period and is one of Myanmar’s biggest festivals, draws hordes of visitors who believe nats from all over the country come to enjoy the celebrations.

Spirit mediums are said to be the embodiment of the spirits which the people are at the festival to honour. They give them money, food, alcohol and cigarettes to appease the spirits and gain themselves some good luck for the year ahead.
The twins from the Taungbyone legend are featured on much of the parphenalia of the festival especially on these plastic chains which are a favourite souvenir.
People come here to give offerings to spirit mediums. These mediums are usually men dressed in elaborate clothing and make-up who communicate with the spirits on behalf of the lay people.

The story of the Taungbyone Nat Festival comes from the time of King Anawratha. The King is said to have ordered a mild punishement on young twin brothers for disobeying his order. However the twins were accidentally killed during their punishment. To make up for this King Anawrahta built a pagoda at Taungbyone in their memory. This pagoda is the centre of the festival to this day.

ith the growing number of new restaurants in Yangon, we start to be able to enjoy more cuisines from many parts of the world. Thai cuisine is one of the most popular in Myanmar due to some similarities in culture and the growing number of Thai tourists and businesspeople visiting Myanmar, especially now that there are visa exemption between Thailand and Myanmar and cheap air ticket prices to Bangkok. Located close to the Park Royal Hotel on Nawaday Street near the Dagon (1) school on Alan Pya Pagoda Road there is a “Rice and Noodle restaurant delivering familiar Thai street food dishes to Myanmar.

The restaurant is divided into two floors and can host up to 50 people. When I visited the waiter suggested that I sit upstairs if I would like to feel the cool breeze of the air conditioning. I followed his advice. On the table, there was a mini-standee showing pork-balls (Look Chin Ping) and grilled pork (Moo Ping). I decided to order these two as appetizers. The taste of these two dishes is exactly the same as on a street in
Bangkok especially the grilled pork, which is highly recommended. The pork was nicely charred but remained juicy and moist. For the main course, you can choose from the rice menu, noodle menu and salad menu. The rice and noodle menu comes with various types of meats like crispy pork, red roasted pork, stewed pork leg, stewed pork ribs, 3mix (red roasted pork, crispy pork and roasted duck), Hainanese chick-
en, deep-fried chicken, and roasted duck. You can also order extra meat of your choice as a separate dish. Noodle lovers can select their choice of noodles - egg noodle, jade noodle, thin-rice noodle, and flatrice noodle. You may add pork or shrimp dumplings to your dishes and they are served with your choice of soup or salad. The recommended dishes include stewed pork ribs with rice, Hainanese chicken & deep fried

Myanmar’s stunning freshwater Inle Lake in Shan State has become a must-see for tourists. But come monsoon season, the incessant crowds to the densely inhabited lake dwindle and a period of calm takes over. So when I recently got invited to stay at the luxury Novotel Inle Lake Myat Min Resort and see the lake at this time of year, it was an offer I couldn’t turn down. My bus left Aung Min Galar Highway Gate at 6pm and took 14 hours to reach Nyaung Shwe. A car from the Novotel hotel picked me up at the bus gate. Novotel Inle is located in Mine Thauk village, on the eastern side of the lake, and about 30 minutes from the bus gate.

After travelling for close to 15 hours, as soon as I reached the hotel I took a much-needed shower, massage and rest. I was staying on the ground floor, in a junior suite with a view of the garden. My room was perfect - better than I expected. Novotel Inlay has two types of rooms: junior suites and villa suites, and offer views of either the garden or lake. Prices start from US$ 200, but there are usually promotions during the low season. My room was spacious and modern. After my lengthy trip, the sight of my huge bed and two air conditioners came as a relief. The room had a two-seater sofa, arm-
chair and big TV, while the bathroom had an inviting egg-shaped bathtub. Much to my pleasure, the hotel was quiet because of the low season. I saw only a handful of people at breakfast, which is served in the Terrace Restaurant, located by the pool. I had a good view of the Inle Lake from here, but soon enough a turbulent sky had formed and my view grew misty in the rain. After breakfast I strolled around the hotel and hit upon a spa. The spa, which is open from 10am to 9pm, has a range of treatments. I chose to have an aromatherapy massage for 60 minutes.
The aromatic herbs, soft lighting and gentle music, helped me sink into a deep state of relaxation as the masseuse took all the stiffness and stress out of my body. I was suitably ready for my tour of Inle. Feeling refreshed, the next day I went to the awesome 500-metre long Mine Thauk Bridge, a 10 minute drive from the hotel. The bridge connects two parts of the floating village A Mine Thauk, which is built on both land and water. The bridge reminded me of the U Bein Bridge in Mandalay; some call A Mine Thauk a mini version of the 1.2-km U Bein Bridge.

The weather at this time of year may not provide clear skies and sunshine, but it offers solace and a moment to reflect. After spending the day absorbing the tranquility and view of the lake, I was eager to get back to the hotel and enjoy the sunset from the aptly named Sunset Bar. But, waiting patiently with my glass of wine, I was out of luck – the sunset was obscured by a sea of dark clouds. Still, the view was spectacular and eased the pain inflicted by a bunch of mosquitos hovering around me. Dinner that evening was a Shan set meal of rice, meat, vegetables, balachong and
soup. It was delicious, but far too much for me to eat all. With a full stomach – and several mosquito bites – my stay at Novotel Inle was coming to an end. The hotel, with 121 rooms and splendid great architecture, is well worth a stay for travellers with a little more cash to spend. The weather at this time of year may not provide clear skies and sunshine, but it offers solace and a moment to reflect, away from the hordes of tourists during the rest of the year.

Oil Rice Si Hatmin by: mohana gill
This glutionous rice dish is cooked with turmeric and onions and served with roasted sesame seeds and crispfried onions. It is a popular breakfast dish in Myanmar. • 1 tsp ground turmeric • 4 onions, peeled and thinly sliced • 6 Tbsp cooking oil • 2 cups glutinous rice, washed and drained • salt, to taste • 1 litre(32 fl oz/4 cups) hot water • 4 Tbsp roasted white sesame seeds, finely crushed • ½ cup grated coconut • 4 pieces fried salted fish, optional • Sprinkle the turmeric over the cut onions and toss lightly to mix well. • Heat oil in a wok over medium heat. Add the onions and stir-fry until golden brown. Remove half portion of the onions and aside for garnishing. • Add the rice to the wok and mix well with the oil and onions. Seasons with salt. Add the water and stir well. Bring to a boil. • Lower the heat to simmer. Cover the wok tightly with a lid and simmer for about 20 minutes, until the rice is cooked and the water fully absorbed. • Dish out and garnish with the fried onions, crushed sesame seeds and grated coconut. This dish often eaten with fired salted fish. Note If you like eating rice crust, leave the rice over low heat for another 5-10 minutes before dishing it out. You should hear a crackling sound as the rice dries, forming the crust.

Myanmar discovers
specialty
coffee By: Peter Janssen
M
yanmar has never been known for the quality of its coffee, but that is changing, thanks to the efforts of some local entrepreneurs. When I first visited Myanmar, then called Burma, in 1983, I stayed at The Strand Hotel (affordable back in those days at $15 a night in the annex.) The breakfast wasn’t memorable except for the coffee - it was terrible. I attributed the pallid cup of watery coffee to the cultural influence of the tea-drinking British colonialists, but local rulers also played their part. During the decades of socialism, from 1962 to 1988, the government concentrated its agricultural efforts on expanding rice production, ignoring other cash crops such as coffee, which has over the years become a major export earner for other Southeast Asian nations such as Vietnam. But coffee does have a history in Myanmar. It was introduced in Mergui and Tavoy (Dawei) in 1885 by Christian missionaries. Catholic missionaries also introduced Arabica coffee, which grows best in the highlands, to the Shan States and Pyin Oo Lwin in 1930. Between 1932 to 1936, some 95 tons of this variety was exported to Madras, India.

Official interest in coffee growing didn’t perk up again until 2004, when the then-junta designated 50,000 acres of land in Pyin Oo Lwin, Mandalay, for private coffee plantations. Pyin Oo Lwin, formerly known as May Myo, was chosen because of its high altitude of over 1,000 metres and good security. The picturesque town, about 67 kilometres northeast of Mandalay, is also home to the National Defense Academy and the Kandawgyi National Park. A group of Myanmar entrepreneurs started to invest in coffee plantations in Pyin Oo Lwin about a decade ago, but their efforts have only recently begun to bear fruit. In September 2014, the Mandalay Coffee Group Company was formed as a cooperative with 50 members, including the producers of leading coffee brands such as Blue Mountain, Green Land, Lone Star, Highland and Shwe Yin Mar, and various smaller scale operators. Altogether, the Pyin Oo Lwin area produces about 500 tons of green coffee beans a year, about a quarter of the country’s total production, which is estimated at 2,000 tons annually. The Mandalay Coffee Group (MCG) has jointly invested in a warehouse and processing plant in Pyin Oo Lwin, and with the help of Winrock International, a global non-profit organization, has been helping coffee bean farmers in the area improve their planting and harvesting techniques to upgrade the quality of Myanmar’s crop. In 2015, MCG, Winrock, and the US-based non-profit Coffee Quality Institute, jointly organized Myanmar’s first international cupping competition to grade Myanmar’s “specialty” coffee. Specialty coffees are now all the rage in the US and Europe, fetching high prices. “Specialty coffees are traded at significant price premiums; two, three, five even ten times higher than the price of commodity Arabica,” said Stephen Walls, chief of party of USAID-funded Value Chains

for Rural Development project, that funds Winrock. “The potential for Myanmar exists as a producer of specialty coffees – not large volume but high quality for high price premiums.” At the first coffee cupping (tasting) competition held last year, 20 of the 60 contestants got a grade above 80 points for their coffee, qualifying them as specialty. At the
second cupping competition held in Pyin Oo Lwin in March, 56 of the contestants received grades above 80 points, with the highest score of 87.08 points going to the Green Land Coffee estate. As a result of the second cupping competition, two US buyers put in orders for 36 tons of specialty coffee from Pyin Oo Lwin estates, which were shipped on June 19.
‘
It’s good that we are starting to export coffee, but my worry now is all our quality coffee is going abroad
The specialty shipment was a good start, but people in Myanmar’s coffee business admit that they have a long way to go before the country can even start to compete with regional rivals such as Vietnam, which exports about 1.5 million tons of coffee annually. “We are very late in this industry, so we should grow by leap-frogging,” said U Ngwe Tun, the

founder and director of the Aung Nay Lin Htun Company, which launched the Genius coffee brand. “I don’t want to go step by step, along with the other people,” he said. Ngwe Tun launched the Genius Coffee Estate in Ywar Ngan, South Shan State, in 2013. The estate is operated by smallholder farmers who sell their beans direct to Ngwe
Tun, who has invested about $1 million of his own money in processing facilities in Ywar Ngan. The higher the price Ngwe Tun’s coffee fetches on the international market, the better farmers get paid. As well as aiming for specialty grade coffee, Ngwe Tun is also seeking organic certification for a 70-acre plot of land cultivated by 50 smallholder farmers from Control Union,
52 | departures >>> Myanmar discovers specialty coffee
a global network of inspectors. Mr Rashan Ranawake, Control Union’s managing director, said the estate is expected to win certification soon. Organic certification will mean more money for coffee bean growers. “We can grow about 7-8 tons per year,” Ngwe Tun said. “That will fetch about $2.00 to $2.50 per kilogram for the farmers. We can sell for maybe $8,000 per ton. Specialty coffee gets about $6,000 per ton, and specialty/organic, about $8,000.” Commodity grade Arabica fetches only about $3,500 to 4,000 per ton. Genius Coffee Estate also offers an eco-tour of its plantations in South Shan State, with visits to the plantations, nursery and processing facilities. U Thu Zaw, the Executive Director of Sithar Coffee Company, which produces the Sithar and Highland coffee brands, is planning a similar coffee tour at his family’s Pyin Oo
Lwin estate later this year. “We will outsource the tourism and marketing to one agency exclusively, while Sithar will do the coffee explanations, and demonstrate coffee brewing, along with a meal, at Pan Taw Win Restaurant,” said Thu Zaw. Thu Zaw literally grew up with coffee. His mother, Daw Tin Tin Win, opened the high-end Fuji Coffee House and Restaurant in Yangon in 1996. Later his parents sold Fuji and moved to Pyin Oo Lwin to run the family coffee plantation and a new restaurant called Pan Taw Win. Thu Zaw is hoping to promote Myanmar’s quality coffee abroad, and crucially at home to give locals a more sophisticated brew. “It’s good that we are starting to export coffee, but my worry now is all our quality coffee is going abroad,” Thu Zaw said. “Do we want to export all the good quality coffee out of the country and only import low quality stuff for locals to consume?”

B
ob Percival walks downtown and discovers a family mansion, pulsating halo lights, and the classic Golden Teashop. It’s the middle of the wet season and downtown Yangon is awash with umbrellas, and makeshift bamboo and plastic shelters for street vendors. There’s a certain etiquette as you walk along the crowded footpath; umbrellas move up and down and from one side to the other. Somehow everyone manages to navigate their rain-drenched route without too many entanglements or collisions. Today I am walking with Khin Yadana Htun, who’s being good enough to act as an interpreter for me. Khin specialises in doing SFX make-up for the burgeoning horror movie industry. She also has a passion for all things goth. We start walking from the top of the upper block, at the street’s junction with Bogyoke Aung San Road. The great thing about walking these streets is that you never know
what you will find, even though you might have walked them many times before, and of course it is the people of Yangon that make the experience so worthwhile. Downtown is a streetscape built from the tremendous energy and life of those who live and work here. On the left corner we find the overflowing bookshop of U Thin Htun who has been selling secondhand books here for 38 years. His uncle first started the business fifty years ago. He mainly sells English language books and magazines. The prices are very reasonable. Alongside him, U Kyin Thein sells postcards and photos from his small portable stand. He’s been doing business here for 15 years. Across the street you will find the food stall of Lu Zaw (Shwe Nyar Thar), offering some of the best mohinga in town, with a beautiful aroma of fish, garlic and special broth. A bowl of fresh noodles (brought up from Chinatown) costs only 300K. His stall is open from 5.00am to 10.00am. In the afternoon he sells traditional Burmese salads.

The great thing about walking these streets is that you never know what you will find, even though you might have walked them many times before.
Further down the street is St Johns Church, founded by French Catholic missionaries. The church was built in 1900 and has a unique interior curved wooden roof, a design that imitates the inverted hull of fishing boats common along the southern French coast. The church has been recently painted and is magnificent in its sea-blue, white and gold colours. The freestanding bell tower is also well worth a look. Across the road from the church you will find a distinctive 1928 apartment building, now run-down, that was built in a New Orleans French-style with curved iron railings - this was Rangoon downtown residential architecture at its peak. Further down on the left, you can find a very good Burmese food stall run by Khin Thandor Win. She had been offering quality local cuisine here for 25 years. On offer are curry dishes of prawn (pazun hin), chicken (kyat thar hin), egg & lady’s finger (bal o yohe pet hay thoe), all just 1000K, with rice.
58 | departures >>> Bo Son Pat Street
Bo Son Pat Street is unique in its variety of buildings and architectural styles. It sits at the edge of the Indian quarter, which extends another ten blocks to the west toward Chinatown. The most magnificent building of all though is further down on the left at No. 299. This family mansion, four stories high, was built around 1915 by an Indian Muslim trader who made his fortune importing and exporting quality linen. He had two previous wooden houses that burnt down. The house is still occupied and owned by his granddaughter, now in her sixties. Inside the house there are Portuguese tiles, and stained glass windows and decorative wrought-iron, imported from Great Britain. The internal staircase is made from local teak, with curved bannisters and intricate woodwork. This old mansion is not legally protected as a heritage building, but will hopefully survive the rapid residential development now occurring in Yangon. Further down on the corner of Anawratha Road is one of the best local South Indian restaurants in town, with especially good naan bread, cooked in a tandoori style open oven - my local eatery and highly recommended. Crossing over there are numerous amplifier and speaker shops. At No. 200 there is the Red Dragon, which sells impressive stainless-steel big-horn speakers (23,000K) used to broadcast very loud messages up and down the streets of Yangon. Across the road at No.189 is Halo Lighting, owned by Ko Kyaw Kyaw Hdun, which sells the endlessly fascinating multi-coloured halos that grace Buddhist statues all over Myanmar. The shop is aglow with the colour and pulsating rhythms of LED lights. Each light-board is painstakingly assembled by hand – a sight worth taking in. The 12inch halos cost between 7000K-48,000K, and the 21-inch range from 23,000K-100,000K.

At No.134 is the funkily designed Diamond House, built in 1958. At No.175 is a 1977 building with a very unusual verandah. Further down the street is the beautiful Chalia Jame Mosque (Sunni) established in 1869. On this north-east corner of Mahabandoola Road is the famous Shwe Beli Yoghurt shop, staffed by the very amiable Ye Zaw. Here you can sit down, rest, and enjoy a freshly made lassi yoghurt for as little as 600K. The shop has been keeping its customers happy here for 30 years. Trying not to get run over (cars in Yangon tend to speed up when they see a pedestrian crossing), we cross Mahabandoola Road into the lower block. The street takes you to a bygone era; a time that is not your own – a time and place that resonates with other people’s memories and histories. This is certainly true of the Golden Teashop, the jewel of this block, run by Tin Shwe and his son U Tint Lwin. It is a Sunni Muslim teashop that has been serving tea for thirty years. Every local resident and government official has passed through this tea shop, including the ubiquitous Special Branch officers who regularly sat in the tea shop corner during the regime years, listening in on conversations. Those days have now gone. The tea here is excellent and reasonably priced at 400K. Tea shops such as this will one day be a thing of the past, so soak in the atmosphere of old Yangon and enjoy the hospitality and ambience of this special place.

Monsoon afternoons can be long and boring. But if you are a coffee lover and a book lover, you can turn those dull afternoons into interesting moments at Innwa Book and Café shop at Myanmar Plaza. The shop has a wide range of books from translations to novels and books on religion. You can also find books for young people and children. The cozy book store offers two small tables as a reading space and also another small place for kids. What makes the place special is customers can enjoy good coffee and the smell of coffee in the air makes you feel fresh. “Customers can get any book from the bookshelf and there is no restriction,” said Ma Khin Hnin Pwint Pyone, owner of the Innwa Book Store. “Sometimes, books are damaged and we do not take any action for that. Meanwhile, we receive complaints from the buyers about the damaged books but we’re lucky because it’s rarely happened. Most of the customers understand it.” Despite a few such losses she has no plan to restrict anything and customers can stay as long as they want during the shop’s opening times from 9am to 9pm.

In 1993, Innwa Book Store established their very first shop near Sule Pagoda in Yangon’s downtown. “When we started, it’s safe to say Innwa was the biggest book store in town at that time. Customers can get both Myanmar and English language books at one place” she said. Later, Innwa started bringing International newspapers and magazines to the city from The New York Time’s International Herald Tribune to TIME magazine. Then, they opened their very first outlet in the Hledan area. “After we opened the second shop, we had Myanmar language
books and English because we wanted to promote local books at that time,” she said. Myanmar people want to read more local books but still need English language books, especially for young people, she said. “So, I wanted to put more English books for youth and kids when I open the third Innwa book store.” When she traveled overseas she remembers enjoying books and coffee at one place. Since then, her dream was to turn her bookshop into that kind of place. Later in 2015, she made her dream came true and opened her third branch at Myanmar Plaza, the Innwa Book & Cafe.

“This time is a big challenge for us. In the past, we can only sell books. Now, we also have to provide customer service which is important for us. We always try to give the best service to our customers,” said Ma Khin Hnin Pwint Pyone. She also makes sure that she knows what her customers’ needs are and she says the bookshop’s Facebook page is very useful for this. Another service of the shop that will please customers is that they can order particular books they would like to read. “It’s my pleasure to help the customers. When they ask for some books, I order for them but they have to wait 10 or 15 days,” she said. Coffee costs from between 1,000 Kyat and 3,500 Kyat and they also serve delicious cakes. People who love to read while enjoying a good cup of coffee should consider going to Innwa Book & Café at Myanmar Plaza to relax and chill out. The place just couldn’t be more perfect for a rainy day.
