Deborah Cohn - Trademark Attorney and Professional Deborah Cohn graduated from the American University in Washington, D.C. with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology in 1974. She conducted graduate work in Psychology at the City University of New York, Hunter College from 1975 to 1976, and within the next six years would decide to go back to school for a degree in law.

She graduated from the George Mason University School of Law in 1982 and would secure her first position in law at the United States Patent and Trademark Office as a Trademark Examining Attorney.

In her first position at the USPTO Deborah examined applications for trademark registration to determine compliance with the Lanham Act and Rules of Practice, wrote legal briefs and presented oral arguments before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, and assisted with special details and projects for the Assistant Commissioner and Office of the Solicitor. She held this position for five years before being promoted to Managing Attorney.

As Managing Attorney, Deborah Cohn was now in charge of all aspects of the trademark examination law office. She supervised and reviewed the work of examining attorneys, trained and mentored new attorneys, and advised and assisted attorneys on difficult or complex cases.

By 1998, Deborah had become the Group Director of Trademark Law Offices, putting her in a level of authority she hadn’t been accustomed to. She oversaw the operation of trademark law offices in areas of legal examination, productivity, customer service, and personnel management, developed and implemented examination policies, procedures, and training programs, managed e-government implementation, was U.S. delegate for World Intellectual Property Organization meetings, and led the development and implementation of telework for the entire United States Patent and Trademark Office organization.

In 2008, 2009, and 2010, Deborah Cohn served temporary assignments as Acting Chief Administrative Officer of the organization where she was responsible for all administrative service support functions for the USPTO including human resource management, telework policy and programs, facilities management, safety and security, transportation, and asset and records management.

She was promoted to Deputy Commissioner for Trademark Operations in 2005. Five years later she was promoted to Commissioner for Trademarks, one of the highest positions within the organization, illustrating her dedication and passion for her work and her agency. As Commissioner for Trademarks at the United States Patent and Trademark Office Deborah Cohn is responsible for all aspects of the agency including legal policy, operations and budget relating to trademark examination, registration and maintenance. Deborah Cohn is retiring in January, 2015.
