Dr. Susan Cardenas: Over Two Decades of Public Health Experience Dr. Susan Cardenas, now a College Associate Professor at the New Mexico State University Department of Public Health Sciences, has enjoyed a long, successful and impactful career in the field of public health. Educated at NMSU and currently employed there, Dr. Susan Cardenas continues to be an impactful and influential member of the public health field. Dr. Susan Cardenas received her undergraduate, graduate, and Doctoral education at New Mexico State, undertaking each curriculum with the diligence and commitment of a dedicated academic. She received her Bachelor of Community Health degree in 1990, her Master of Science degree in Health Science and Management in December of 1995 and her PhD in Educational Administration in August of 2006. Each new educational level opened up new opportunities for Dr. Susan Cardenas to demonstrate her passion for and dedication to the field of Public Health. Her professional career began in earnest in 1990, shortly after the reception of her Bachelor of Community Health degree. Dr. Susan Cardenas served as both a Health Coordinator and as a Health Educator for the LaClinica de Familia organization, participating, implementing and coordinating a variety of programs that helped to enhance La Clinica’s efficiency and effectiveness in the community. She worked for the Las Cruces-based organization until 1993 when she accepted the position of Public Health Educator and Community Relations Coordinator with the Public Health Division of the New Mexico Department of Health. Dr. Susan Cardenas served this government entity from 1993 to 1997. Not only was she an invaluable asset to the NM Department of Health, but she was also able to pursue and complete the NMSU Health Science and Management Master’s program during her NM employment tenure. It was also during this time that she was offered and accepted her first official university level teaching position at NMSU, becoming a College Assistant Professor in the Department of Health Science in 1996. She held this position until 2007, upon which time she accepted the position of Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) in the Texas Women’s University Department of Health Studies. Dr. Susan Cardenas returned to teaching online at NMSU in 2009, continuing as Adjunct College Associate Professor in the NMSU Department of Public Health Sciences. She briefly served as an Adjunct Assistant Professor for TWU during the year 2010, and was a Health Education Specialist for the Texas Children’s Health Plan in 2011, though she retained her professorial position at NMSU throughout. Dr. Susan Cardenas has most recently enjoyed the position of Program Manager and CoPrincipal Investigator for the Success With Adolescent Goals Program, or SWAG, which she began in 2012.
