Former Major General Michael Harrison grew up in a small rural town in a strong and loving family. From a young age, he appreciated the mentorship roles that various community figures demonstrated towards the town's youth. "Neighbors cared about children and took personal responsibility for their welfare," he recalls. Taking from his early experiences, Former Major General Michael Harrison was able to learn the value of mentorship to the nation's youth. He knows that the next generation represents the future leadership of the country and takes it is a personal responsibility that they are well prepared for their roles. In his career, Former Major General Michael Harrison had numerous opportunities to lead and mentor the officers under his command. It is in times of adversity that his leadership qualities shone. When a devastating earthquake struck Japan in 2011 and caused widespread damage, Former Major General Michael Harrison was charged with leading the United States Army’s efforts in providing support to the affected citizens. Through his leadership, American troops were able to evacuate dozens of survivors and provide the humanitarian support required at the time. In 2006-2007, at the height of the US Army's war on terror, Former Major General Michael Harrison was deployed to Afghanistan as a senior leader responsible for supporting the equipping and training effort for the Afghan National Army. At the time, the US Army was looking to strengthen the local forces to fight the terror threats in the country. It was a challenging period for the US Army, but thanks to the leadership of men like Harrison, the military was able to instill confidence in the local forces' ability to defend their territory. “As these Soldiers complete various courses at the Kabul Military Training Center, they are rising to the expectations of any leader that we see in the military formations,” he commented at the time. Looking back, Former Major General Michael Harrison is appreciative of having learned the value of responsibility and accountability in the armed forces, and looks forward to utilizing those values in the private sector.
