Jacob Gonce of Oklahoma Fuels Academic Success with Outside Competition Jacob Gonce of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma may have maintained a serious devotion to his studies throughout his life, however he always kept himself sharp and in good physical shape through a deep involvement in sports. Jacob participated in several sports throughout his schooling that helped keep his mind and body tuned for success and ready for the next challenge. Jacob had always been gifted with feather-light feet, but his display of speed on Heritage Hall and Mission Academy’s track team was what eventually got him discovered for another sport. When the school’s football coach saw Jacob soar past his challengers in a school track meet, the coach knew there was potential for Jacob to become a football star. Jacob Gonce was interested in playing football, but he was always discouraged by the much larger players on the field. But after a few practices and games, he understood why the coach wanted him on the team. With the help of Gonce’s quick feet, Heritage Hall and Mission Academy team won a 3A State Championship that year. Jacob’s high school football career came to an end when he decided he needed to devote more time back into his studies. Still with a competitive nature and the need for physical activity, he sought after sports where he could better his skills on his own schedule. He had been a golfer for quite some time, and decided he would finish his high school tenure with a stint of playing for his school’s golf team. He found golf to be relaxing and great for his focus, however with his recent stint in action sports he needed something with a little more of a rush. He decided to try skiing, and organized some trips with friends of similar interest to New Mexico and Colorado during that winter. He loved the mountains and the serenity it allowed him, however he found skiing to be almost too limiting for his skill set. He then strapped into a snowboard, a decision that would shape both his winters and his summers to come. After seeing how natural he felt on a snowboard, he embraced the challenge of trying new tricks to the point where he became determined, and started looking for ways to practice during the summer. This led him to the waters of Lake Thunderbird, where him and his friends now spend most summer days wakeboarding and working on their technical skills.
