Paul Avery DDS: Don't Ban My Breed Paul Avery DDS is a Colorado dentist and a proud supporter of Don't Bully My Breed, an advocacy organization that is dedicated to the welfare of helping dogs that have a bad public image through no fault of their own, and are adversely affected by laws that ban specific breeds of dogs and other animals. "After being directly affected by these laws, [we] want to help educate the general public on the alternatives to Breed Specific Laws," says Paul Avery, DDS. The Don't Bully My Breed organization helps the public with spay and neuter options, fights against breed specific legislation, shares information with the public about responsible bully breed ownership, opposes and combats dog fighting, and helps to promote a positive image and understanding of pit bulls and other "bully breed" dogs. Pit bulls in particular have been singled out as being dangerous animals. It appears that this happened in large part because criminals began using the dogs, which are muscular and have powerful jaws, for protection and as weapons. But Paul Avery DDS says that it is people who make pit bulls or any other dog mean and vicious, and that the dogs are not inherently dangerous. It is therefore wrong to single out a breed of animals with laws that punish them simply for being a certain breed. He sums it up with the phrase, "Punish the deed, not the breed." Paul Avery DDS is also a supporter of ColorRADogs, a pit bull shelter that believes that it is a waste of money and resources to promote ineffective breed-specific laws that simply do not work. He says that the organization is supporting laws that that hold dog owners criminally liable for the actions of their dogs. If the animal attacks someone then the animal can be deemed dangerous. But if the animal attacks someone again, then the owner will face felony prosecution and could be sentenced to up to five years in prison. He agrees with the organizations contention that people who own animals for the wrong reasons, no matter what its breed, won't want to go to prison for something that their dog did. Paul Avery DDS is a graduate of Ohio State University, where he received a degree in Zoology in 1993, and of the Case Western Reserve University School of Dentistry, where he graduated in 1997. He is a member of the American Dental Association, the Academy of General Dentistry, and the Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.
