Location: Smyrna, DE Jerome Abrams recently opened a new family practice at Family Medicine of SmyrnaClayton in Smyrna, Delaware. Opening a new practice is cause for celebration, but what makes the event more spectacular is the experience behind the man. In October of 2012, Jerome Abrams was officially recognized by Bayhealth Medical Center for his thirty years of active medical service. As a staff member, he performed numerous clinical duties. His experience taught him the importance of talking to patients and bridging the gap between looking at medical files and looking at the person he was treating. “Doctors look at medical files and see a medical history. Doctors look at symptoms and find an appropriate treatment. In that process, the humanity behind medical care is lost,” says Jerome Abrams. In 2013, Jerome Abrams celebrated another 30th anniversary – this time it was celebrating a successful thirty years in private practice. His private practice was at Dover Family Physicians in Dover, Delaware, where he performed a range of services including: family practice, inpatient and outpatient, critical care, and pediatrics. He became a part of the private practice one year after obtaining is license to practice medicine in the State of Delaware. “Thirty years is a long time to work, and despite any difficulties that occurred over the years, I always loved my job and making a meaningful difference in people’s lives. To work with families and watch kids grow and learn what they can accomplish in life is one of the greatest parts of working in family practice,” says Jerome Abrams. As a physician, Jerome Abrams did not limit himself to clinical work. Over the years, he took a number of management courses. He completed his last round of courses in 2004, delivered by the American College of Physician Executives. Each course equipped him with the knowledge to run a successful practice and hold various chair positions over the years.
