SPECIAL HIGHLIGHTS

where excellence crosses path

“To be a great leader, one needs to have good strategies, be knowledgeable and able to predict the future.” - Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad (4th & Longest serving Malaysian Prime Minister) MASCAZINE | Malaysian Students’ Council of Australia

I

Advisor’s Foreword

Firstly, I would like to say thank you. Thank you to the MASCAzine 2013 committee for giving me this opportunity to be a part of the 2nd edition of this meaningful MASCA memorabilia. Throughout the years, MASCA has grown tremendously. This is evident when the first Malaysian Summit of Australia (MASA), the largest student event Down Under was organized last July. Through that, the ties between the state chapters have grown stronger. The bond is inevitably formed through the same passion: To serve our fellow Malaysian students. MASCAzine is also one of the living proof that MASCA is developing. I wish MASCAzine all the success in the world and for years to come. As the Director of Education Malaysia Australia (EMA), it has been a pleasure to be a part of this organization, as- sisting MASCA in finding its true potential and capabilities. May the good rapport between EMA and MASCA continue to strengthen from time to time. MASCA for the past, present and future! Thank you. Dr Jumiati Ismail Director Education Malaysia Australia

National Chairperson’s Foreword

Assalammualaikum and greetings, I would like to first thank the MASCAzine team for giving me the opportunity to be a part of this great initiative. MASCA was first founded in 2003 by a group of Malaysian students who aspired to form an organisation that would promote unity and serve the welfare and interest of Malaysian students in Australia. Since then, MASCA has taken great strides in achieving its vision and mission and I am truly grateful to be able to witness and be a part of this great organisation. Johan Kamal Hamidon National Chairperson MASCA 2012/2013

Among MASCA’s achievements are its strong presence in every state through establishment of state chapters and affiliation with Malaysian Student Organisations (MSOs), the introduction of various state level programs, and the introduction of national level initiatives such as the Malaysian Summit of Malaysia (MASA), Down Under Camp (DUC), Australian Network of Malaysian Student Leaders Summit (Australian Network Agenda) and MASCAzine. Despite these achievements, MASCA will continue to work hard in maintaining and introducing new initiatives that can benefit Malaysian students in Australia. This year marks the 2nd edition of MASCAzine after it was first introduced in 2012. This initiative was first introduced to provide Malaysian students a snapshot of the various MASCA events and initiatives that took place across Australia for the whole year. Based on the positive responses and suggestions from the 1st edition, the 2nd MASCAzine has been structured to be more

MASCAZINE | Malaysian Students’ Council of Australia

comprehensive and inclusive to the various aspects of student life in Australia. This year’s edition is packed with even more write-ups, stories, and pictures that are relevant to all Malaysian students. The journey to complete the 2nd MASCAzine is definitely not an easy one. Without the dedication of the editorial team, MASCA council members and other contributors, this initiative would have definitely not been successful. On behalf of the Malaysian students in Australia, I would like to express my gratitude to all parties involved. Hopefully, MASCAzine will continue to become an important memorabilia for Malaysian students in Australia. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all parties who were involved in making this a successful year for MASCA. Thank you to the High Commission of Australia for being the patron of MASCA this year, Education Malaysia Australia for providing advice and input to our operation, our sponsors for the wonderful cooperation and support, our fellow MASCA council from each state for keeping things running and most important of all, our fellow Malaysian students. Without them, MASCA will cease to continue serving its purpose as an organisation. Tun Hussein Onn who was the 3rd Prime Minister of Malaysia once said: “In all efforts to achieve national unity, there must be commitment and sincerity.” I believe that is the best way to describe MASCA as a whole. May MASCAzine continue to prosper in years to come!

MASCAzine Editor’s Foreword

Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi wabarakatuh and Salam Sejahtera, On behalf of Malaysian Student’s Council of Australia (MASCA), it is with great honour that I present to you the 2nd edition of MASCAzine, the official MASCA magazine for the year 2013. This magazine provides a comprehensive summary of the many activities carried out by MASCA this year. Already in its 12th year, MASCA continues to grow as a national platform for Malaysian student activism in Australia. First and foremost, I would like to take this opportunity to extend our deepest gratitude to all the sponsors of MASCA for without your ongoing support, commitments and contributions, many of our events would not have been possible. I would also like to thank the 2013 MASCA either from the Nationals’ all the way to the state coun- cil, for their hard work and tireless efforts in realizing our innumerous events over the past year. Your generous contributions have helped make MASCA’s vision of catering for the needs of Malaysians in Australia a reality. I believe that it has truly been a great and enriching year for both myself and as well as the committee and we have a lot to be proud of.

Despite the success of all our national events & initiatives, one of our goal this year as the national council is to ensure that MASCA are not only known to Malaysians in Australia but also known in our beloved country. I can proudly say that it has been a remarkable success. For MASCA to be featured in Malaysia’s national television (Malaysia Hari Ini) in July & other Malaysian’s media truly shows that MASCA has proven it’s accountability to be the leading Malaysian students’ organization in Australia. We hope that you enjoy reading this edition of MASCAzine.

Mohamad Syahir Mohamad Zaini Editor in Chief 2nd Edition of MASCAzine

“Charting the way for Malaysians Down Under “

As you read through this magazine, I hope that one thing strikes you – the sheer range and diversity of events that have been organized by MASCA as well as the successes that have been achieved in the last term. This year, many of MASCA’s projects and programmes have undergone changes and improvements so as to reflect, respond and cater for the growing needs of Malaysian.

KARYA KREATIF Untitled feeling

Nur

I step up the stairs But descend inside myself

Setiap yang mendatang, Setiap saat pasti kan pergi, Meninggalkan dunia, Jangan sangka itu semua mimpi.

How do I declare, the unwinding, the elixir of despair? Hoping that this raining heart never stops me to feel fear, Of something that I pretend to hide, Asking where is my sincerely? Hoping that every tear it drops, Will be always crystal clear, So that when it drowns me out, I can see you in insanity. Its complicate to explicate, How to write this with a pen of invisible hand. It is a waste to eradicate all the inks, which you can’t ever predict When its going to end When you know it, you feel like knowing it, But you do it, like you own it, Pushing yourself to the limit, Stop it!, you are not your own.

Tatkala ia menjelang, Satu saat pun tak berhenti, Menyesal tak berguna, Fantasia itu realiti. Ku-tersedar dari lamunan, Hilang api, tanah, air, Dan angin yang berakhir, Tinggallah sekujur badan, Ku-tak tertanggung perasaan, Bila cair warna zahir, Yang batin pun terukir, Jelaslah kebutaan. Oh... Mana kau Ya Nur, Ku tersadung bayang tubuh sendiri, Tunjukkanlah Nur, Terlalu terang untukku menyaksi

PAST EVENT HIGHLIGHTS

One of our biggest pride this year would definitely be this one. Daniel Connell is a South Australian artist whose passion lies in multicultural arts. Aiming to promote the ‘faces of Malaysia’, this was an ongoing event from the month of May till October where MASCA SA has been working with Daniel by allowing him to paint the portraits of our fellow Malaysian students, which were then exhibited for SA to see at Adelaide’s Nexus Art Gallery. To top it all off, the portraits were projected on a building right in the middle of Adelaide CBD on King William Street for two weeks straight. This was definitely a wonderful experience on our behalf all thanks to the efforts of our Chairperson, Raja Daniel

OZ ASIA FESTIVAL MOON LANTERN FESTIVAL 2013 Being an initiative of MASCA Cultural, we sent our Joget Lambak and Sumazau dancers to perform for the grandest ceremony of Oz Asia Festival.
