Sinchai or how we all call him Ooh is one of those people that you know you like from the first moment you meet them. His imagination is amazing and he found the way to express it in a form of the paintings and paper mâché sculptures we all admire. We wanted to squeeze a little bit of his imaginative world during our interview at our last market on 29th January 2016 at Katara for you to meet him a little bit better too.

What is your background and when and why did you decide to start your own small business?

I like to draw a lot and I have been drawing ever since I was very young. My hobby is painting and drawing. I never used to sell my work before. Only recently have I started selling my paintings along with paper mâché money boxes and pop-up cards all made from recycled paper. And it is no surprise this was for the first time here at QatART winter market last year. My first market stall was very good, almost all of my work was sold. This was a very very good start for me.

What sort of products do you market?

My work focuses on the recycled art. I use paper mâché techniques to create simple sculpture also to create an abstract texture on canvas and make an interesting background for paintings.

How does your work differ from others of its genre?

Well, I think what makes me different from others are my designs and unique painting style.

How do you stay inspired?

I am inspired by so many things. I would have to say that I am inspired by everything around me.

Where do you buy your supplies?

My main material is recycled paper. I definitely don’t need to buy it. I use old newspaper and magazine from my office. I use cardboard paper from local grocery shops. Sometimes I grab cardboard paper from trash cans & recycle bins. I only buy some materials like paints and brushes from Colour Notes, Jarir Bookstore, Daiso, Souq Waqif and other stationary stores.

How does your creating process work?

First, I sketch my design ideas on a paper, then I start a step-by-step process of creation to get the ideas done one by one. Once those ideas are done, I start planning some new ones.

What's the best thing about setting up your own brand?

The best thing is that I can do whatever I want to do and nobody says “no”. There are no pressures, rules, conditions or time limit. I am doing everything I love at my own pace and in my own style.

Who are your customers and where do you sell your work?

Whoever loves and appreciates recycled art is my customer. I sell my work online through my Facebook page, at some local arts and crafts markets and at QatART markets of course.

Why do you like being a crafter and a designer in 10 words or less?

Making art is part of being human.

Name something you do in your spare time.

I like to do many things in my free time. I go to the gym three times a week. I sometimes go out for a weekend brunch in different restaurants and different places. I also like listening to the music and I sometimes find it inspiring to read my favorite book or even watch my favorite TV shows.

Where would you like to travel to next?

I really want to go home, to Bangkok, Thailand.

Any exciting news to share?

I got a chance to be an artist in residency at Katara Cultural Village again this year for 2 months from February to March I will display my work at Art studio 3 building no.19 and hold a workshop on Friday 5th &19th February and every Friday in March.

What recent project have you enjoyed doing?

Recently, I was invited to conduct a recycled art workshop “Garden Fine Arts” at the Spring Festival at Souq Waqif Art Center till 4th February.

What do you love about being a QatART Member?

I am really happy to be a member of QatART community, with all the different nationalities, cultures and languages. Art and creativity brings everyone together regardless of who they are or where they are coming from.

The learning, passion and support that all members give to one another is what makes this community simply one of a kind.

Do you feel QatART helped your business to grow and in which way?

QatART help me a lot. I remember that at my first winter market last year almost all of my stuff was sold. I got a lot of customers and made some very good connection. “Ooh Arts and Crafts” was launched at the QatART market.
