I consider URBAN DESIGN is not a red different from the yellow and blue, but a gray, which actually stand for a way of thinking. And the gray unified the other colours forming a city with different scales.

Prologue This assignment is to design a new building for architecture school in south campus of XAUAT which is located at the foot of the Qinling Mountains. The new architecture pavilion is being considered as a place offering a different and unique experience architectually with the basic programs supporting the education. Regarded as DragonVenture of Chinese civilization, the Qinling Mountains is just a few hundred metres away from the site,so I hiked up into the Qinling mountains to explore the space in them. And the mountains become the source of inspiration natually.

However, when people move from a volume to another(along the direction of B),they can feel the contrast of space caused by alternating between outdoor and indoor, this increases the interest of space.

How to conduct people enter the building? After confirming the function, the primary problem I have met is how to integrate the cultural building which brings new vitality to this area into High-tech Zone.
1Soft edge
Strategy
Kevin Lynch state in his City Image that the elements forming the city image are roads, districts, nodes, landmarks and edges.Edges served as a partition play a significant role in the imageability of urban space. Due to the varying seperate degree, edges can be divided into rigid edge and soft edge. The rigid edge has a deeper degree of segmentation and emphasizes more the differences. It is reflected as introverted self protection and external exclusion, full of intense conflicts and confrontations. The soft edge, however, has a weaker degree of segmentation and focuses on the coordination between spaces. It is manifested as extroverted tolerance and penetration as well as the mutual communication between the inside and the outside, thus presenting a feeling of kindness and friendliness. The soft treatment towards the edge connects the line of sight, path and function, just like suturing the scars formed by the boundaries in the city. In this way, the edge is no longer an isolated barrier but an organic link which connects the adjacent regions precisely.

Soft edge between street and site
The soft edge developed by disintegrating the mega-structure building and the soft facades make comfortable spaces for people to hover.Consequently, there will be activities occuring at the edge, and subsequently penetrating into the building or/and the street.

Strategy
2City image
Blending with surroundings
Antagonizng with surroundings
In order to make the messy surroundings form a integrated city image, the building should be designed to blend with surroundings by its form, colour and detail .Meanwhile,I make it antagonistic to some extent so that the features of public building could stand out.Hopefully, the building becomes the node of this area, which makes the building more accessible.

In the historical travelling construction of Xi'an,the Han culture which plays a significant role in the development of chinese civilization is ignored previously.

The painting below shows the situation man and nature coexist harmoniously. And that is advocated by chinese traditional Dao culture. So I want to coordinate the relationship between city and rural, man and nature in such a method.
Ecological priority puts the nature as main factor to build a harmony environment.
By adding up farmland to make more activities integrate into the nature,we can create an unique public centre combine with urban and rural.

Since I was a child,I would buy a map in every city I've been to.And looking at the map, I imagine I am the mayor of the entire city. With in-depth study, I find that I prefer walking in the city, to experience the city's streets, buildings and understand the individuals living there.
I hope through my further study,I'll have the ability to provide a better living environment for people in the future
