WELCOME
TO THE QUEENSLAND CONSERVATORIUM PERFORMANCE SEASON FOR 2016...
Cover Image: Tetsuya Lawson
conevents.com.au Welcome to the 2016 Season. With performances across a wide range of genres, this season promises many highlights. Award-winning director Bruce Beresford leads our production of Albert Herring, and London-based director Ian Good returns to direct classic musical The Secret Garden, both assisted by an award-winning production team. The orchestral season features an outstanding array of international conductors, Natalia Raspopova, Andrew Mogrelia, Tze Law Chan and the return of Johannes Fritzsch, while the wind orchestra presents a new commission, Scraps from a Madman’s Diary. Visiting artists will include Grammy Award-winning alumnus Tim Munro, Neal Peres de Costa, and classical pianists Bart van Oort and Roy Howat. Our collaboration with the Australian National Academy of Music also continues with visiting artist Paavali Jumppanen. Our stellar faculty feature heavily throughout the season, including new appointees Meta Weiss (cello), Nicholas Cleobury (opera), Virginia Taylor (flute), Daniel de Borah (piano), Paul Dean (clarinet) and Karin Schaupp (guitar). BLAT, Australian Piano Duo and Trichotomy join our ensembles-in-residence program and we welcome the Australian Piano Duo Festival and the return of small ensemble festival, Crossbows. Our contemporary approach to research, music performance and artistic practice will also be well represented in the Behind the Music and Essence series. Our season concludes with the Conservatorium Gala and a Musical Christmas at St John’s Cathedral. We look forward to seeing you at The Con!

OPERA Albert Herring Benjamin Britten
A comic chamber opera in three acts, Albert Herring is the “coming-of-age” story of a hapless antihero in a town of English villagers preparing for their May Day festivities. A social misfit with a domineering mother, Herring is embarrassingly crowned the May King after all the village’s young women are deemed unsuitable as May Queen. When two rebellious young lovers spike his punch, he revolts, disappearing after the celebration and spending all his winnings on a night on the town. Written in 1947, Britten’s comic work is filled with satire and whimsy in this lighthearted tale of finding your own way and coming of age. Directed by award-winning director Bruce Beresford, conducted by Head of Opera Nicholas Cleobury with lighting designs by Nigel Levings.

Australian Piano Duo
6
Clocked Out
Lyrebird Trio
International award-winning pianists Vicky Yang and Maggie Chen combine to make the Australian Piano Duo. The duo dazzles with their virtuosic technique, performing a large range of repertoire, including works by Australian composer and past faculty member, Betty Beath.
Clocked Out duo return in 2016 for their 16 year of music making. In that time they have premiered more than one hundred Australian works and introduced many international composers to local audiences. Directed by faculty members Erik Griswold (composer/prepared piano) and Vanessa Tomlinson (percussion), Clocked Out are one of Australia’s most diverse and intriguing groups.
The Lyrebird Trio is comprised of musicians Glenn Christensen (violin), Simon Cobcroft (cello) and Angela Turner (piano), all distinguished graduates of the Queensland Conservatorium. The trio takes their name after the remarkable Australian native lyrebird - an important emblem of the Conservatorium for much of its history.
BLAT

Conservatorium Theatre Benjamin Britten’s comic chamber opera in three-acts, Albert Herring is the “coming-of-age” story of a hapless antihero in a town of English villagers preparing for their May Day festivities. $40 / $33 / $21.50
