FOREWORD

What Is Design? In our post industrial world we now recognise that it is the role of designers to not simply make products, but to contribute to social and economic well being; to essentially make the world a better place. Fundamentally, design is about identifying and solving problems practically and creatively. From divergence through to convergence, analysis to synthesis, critical to applied, all designers at a fundamental level go through a similar process of understanding and scoping a problem, ultimately creating a solution which, to use Herbert Simon’s terminology, ‘satisfices’ the situation or turns an ‘existing situation’ into a ‘preferred one’. We now accept this approach as the essence of what is commonly described as ‘design thinking’. In recent times we have added to the idea of design as a process and the making of things, the understanding that design is also about creating ‘experiences’. This new understanding places design at the centre of almost everything humans do. It also allows us to see that design is about social innovation and human well-being. But we must never forget that human well-being also requires designers to be focused on the well-being of our planet. And that is why designers must question everything. And so to our graduates, our next generation of thinkers, do-ers and social innovators. The projects on show will demonstrate much of what has been described here; you will see design thinking in action. You will see the solution focused outcomes of inquiries into all sorts of issues affecting human beings. The brief asked for a catalogue that resembled an artist book itself. I chose to focus on the beauty of human and mechanical errors found in print, as well as the tactile experience of the printed book. This project aligned with my interest in exciting and expressive print design.

KYLE WARD Visual Communication Design

Getting the opportunity to rework my favourite band’s typeface from their latest album was an assignment that I had great fun with. I’ve always been fascinated by the imperfections that can be found within monoprints, and this task provided the opportunity to use the grungy aesthetic already employed by the band. When I sent the lead singer the concept through Instagram he replied with ‘Cool man.’

KYLE MORTENSEN Industrial Design

I have found myself drawn to two sources of design inspiration. The first is that of old mechanical systems and industrial architecture the boast an elegant efficiency. The second inspiration source is nature; the shapes and patterns are gentle and organic, but have a beautiful mathematical precision. I find combining elements of these contrasting sources creates interesting designs.
