On Being Woman By Cherie Blyth No country can take credit for acknowledging the rights of women without enduring an enormous struggle. For many such countries this struggle has been relegated to the history books and women now enjoy equal status and respect along side men. Bangladesh is about to begin along this long road to recognising the equal and substantial contributions made by women to life, culture and economy. As Bangladesh continues to hold on to traditions of male domination and patriarchy, the collective input of women remains scarcely visible. In Sylhet, a northern rural city, these traditions are yet to be challenged. This series brings forth women from different strata in society and places them within the main street of Sylhet. Standing proud and independent these women are visible and should be recognised as equal partners. However, it remains to be seen whether or not the new generation will embrace their presence or cling to past traditions. 48
