Mission Statement

Self Portrait – Gordon Bennett (1955 – 2014)

Internationally acclaimed artist Gordon Bennett (1955 – 2014) was named as the Outstanding Alumnus of the Year at Griffith University’s Arts, Education and Law Gala Dinner and Alumni Awards 2014. Competing against 13 other shortlisted nominees from across the Arts, Education and Law Group, Gordon took out the top prize in recognition of his outstanding contribution to visual and creative arts. Gordon is internationally acclaimed as one of the most significant and critically engaged contemporary Australian artists, whose success came quickly after he graduated from the Queensland College of Art with a Bachelor of Fine Art degree in 1988. He received a level of critical recognition rarely achieved by any artist, and will be remembered for the prominent role he played in questioning and exposing

Australian racial categorisations and stereotypes, and powerful perspectives on the postcolonial experience. Some of Gordon’s achievements include: • Moët et Chandon Australia Art Fellowship in 1991 • MacGeorge Fellowship (The University of Melbourne) in 1993 • Creative Arts Fellow (ANU) in 1996 • Being selected for the cover of Bernard Smith’s book Australian Painting • A showing at the Guggenheim in 1996 • A survey exhibition in 2007 at the National Gallery of Victoria • His work is currently being exhibited in the Berlin Biennale The Arts, Education and Law Gala Dinner and Alumni Awards is an annual event. A picture says a thousand words, so, do a thousand words paint a picture? Not exactly, however, to a talented few it does build the framework to imagine the possibilities and create the vision. As a concept artist, this is the key focus for my magazine page and the reason why it displays no art. For a concept artist never works on just one thing, the job is to design and provide multiple solutions for continuous new ideas conveyed through countless words. So, filling this page with a single image could suggest that I am only good at producing one particular thing. You should want to know that my potential is limitless and cannot be encapsulated in a single image. Therefore, I chose to fill this space with words, allowing you to paint a picture of who I am, beyond the art. As the film industry continues to force-feed audiences recycled ideas, endless sequels, and poorly produced movies, I seek to bring back the quality that makes a film classic. Although I may not be able to affect how the film is written, acted, edited, etc. I can offer the prospect of stunning cinematography and an immersive atmosphere through what I conceptualise. These elements can affect an audience on emotional levels and be the difference to whether the film has a lasting effect on their life, which I feel most recent films lack. Concept art aside, my easygoing personality, selfless generosity, and persistent reliability, make working with me a pleasurable experience for everyone involved. My attitude reflects my desire to be indispensable to the studio by looking beyond my direct job and providing solutions to anticipated problems for colleagues and supervisors. I resonate positive energy, contribute to forming an enjoyable work atmosphere, and always push myself the extra

mile to be successful. This attitude, alongside my open-mindedness, has taken me around the world where I learnt from distant cultures, providing me with an eclectic style, and a more resourceful mindset. Communicational and interpersonal skills are required for a concept artist to work in an office setting and extract a brief from the client, so I have to assume they must exist before art is even considered. Over my short lifespan I have worked well over ten jobs in several industries including hospitality, sales, safety and construction, so am no stranger to human interaction or selling ideas. In fact, these skills are a major advantage to me, as I tend to play devil’s advocate when exploring a topic and debate it from every point of view possible to put it into perspective. This personality trait is a very beneficial tool when building concept art with a client as it gives me the ability to explore the depths of an idea and exploit its strengths. A thousand words paint a picture, and while this article is closer to half a thousand words, your picture of me is only half finished as well. Although, I’m in the process of establishing my online presence and developing a reputation, you should not neglect the opportunity to network with me now and be a part of my rapid progression. Somewhere along the way I hope we can work together to complete the painting and create something more than just art.

Lost Arcade is my identity as a designer and general guy who grew up around the Gold Coast. I love the spaces in the city, white space and being consistently part of something transient. As a graphic designer moving into clothing, I’ve had to learn, grow and change. I know that what people wanted yesterday won’t be what they want tomorrow and everyone is looking for the next new thing. Lost Arcade celebrates the inbetweens of style and Gold Coast culture. It’s dark but it’s in the sun. It’s trend based but not too trendy. It’s both my work and my play.

ALEX LIPPOLD • ALEX.LIPPOLD3@GMAIL.COM • LOSTARCADE.COM.AU • 0416727917

My work is an eclectic mix of people and landscapes, highly stylised pieces and natural and spontaneous works, mixing art, fashion and social comment.

I THINK PHOTOGRAPHY IS PART SKILL AND OPPORTUNITY COMBINED WITH A WHOLE LOT OF LUCK. SOMETIMES I TAKE 100 SHOTS AND AM NOT HAPPY WITH ANY OF THEM. SOMETIMES I CAN LEAVE A PHOTO EXACTLY HOW IT WAS WHEN I TOOK IT. SOMETIMES I REWORK, EDIT AND PHOTOSHOP A PHOTO FOR HOURS. I admire the works of Takashi Murakami and Yayoi Kasuma for their colour and whimsy and the links between fashion and art. I like the work of Andy Warhol for its humour, colour and design. I love the black and white photographs of Max Dupain and Dorothea Lange because they represent history and humanity in a way that is honest and beautiful. One of my favourite photographers is David LaChapelle. In my opinion his best works are the ones that are totally scripted and stylised. I enjoy his tongue-in-cheek humour and his willingness to shock his audiences or challenge their preconceptions about art and photography. I think technology is providing an increasing array of new opportunities to artists for the future. At the same time, I think new technologies help us to develop a greater respect for, and appreciation of, the works of photographers of the past.

Sometimes I think my work is great, sometimes I think it’s not so great. Sometimes I love it, and like all designers, sometimes I hate it. For me, design is about making things work well together and creating correlations between the what’s and why’s and matching them with the who’s and where’s in order to successfully deliver a message. Design is, and always has been, a major part of my life. My creative style truly reflects my personal style, sticking to the rules while veering off a little to create my own path. If I were to describe myself, I would say that I am an energetic optimist that enjoys the quirky side of life! Specialising in Marketing and Graphic Design, my interests lie within understanding, attracting and retaining the consumer. The work I have showcased is a project which allowed me to do this myself from start to finish. Endream let me explore my creativity in every way possible. Hand crafting dream catchers, branding, promoting and right through to selling them. I am constantly discovering more things I love about design and I know that this won’t stop anytime soon. I look forward to creating new and exciting things while growing as a person and, of course, a designer.

DESIGN CAN CHANGE YOU. You see a good looking website. Two days later you’re still thinking about that same website. You go back for another look. It’s better than you remember. How is this possible? How clever is that use of negative space! Why can’t that be your website? You want it. Why couldn’t you have thought of that? Why are you still thinking about this website. Move on. You can’t. You need to meet the designers behind this stroke of genius. This page has changed you. Why? It’s Graphic Design.

For me, design has the ability to make you feel. Design can change your experience of the world. The Bachelor of Digital Media has enhanced my design skills and strengthened my love for creative design. I have a passion for print, layout and typography. My goal is to create designs that people remember, designs that people love and designs that change perceptions of the world. I want to be the designer behind that website you just can’t stop thinking about!

I live on the conservative side of creative. I like corporate, clean, white, and clear. While my peers are striving to be known for their creativity and outlandishness, I am developing my attention to detail. I celebrate strong visual communication and user friendly design. However, life isn’t static, my creative practice and I will change. The world within which I live will change. My work will adapt to the needs of the users. I value the promise of change and growth and this is often reflected in my creative outputs. Below is a selection of my nature-inspired prints, jewellery range and visual branding, each showing growth, simplicity and clarity that I aspire to achieve in both my design practice and personal creative explorations.

My passion for design sparked when I was handed a DSLR camera and a laptop. These introduced me to the world of design where I was overwhelmed with the desire to capture images, design graphics, and create with paint, timber and cloth. I found myself learning new software tools to expand my knowledge and skills, furthering my desire to do more and more. I had found a talent I not only enjoyed doing for myself, but a talent in which produced something that other people enjoyed. My hobby led to enrolling in a Bachelor’s Degree in Graphic Design, where I could explore the endless possibilities in photography and graphics, and cement my place in the world as a designer. My main interests and strengths lay in graphic design, photography, and 3D design, where I can express my own creativity and style.

MISTAKEN IDENTITY Daisy and I were born in the winter of 1993, 20 minutes apart. We are twins. That’s all I can say, we never got the test done. I never had much trouble identifying as an individual. It’s not hard to talk about yourself. But when you are constantly mistaken for someone else, you only really have your DNA to defend yourself. For the last 21 years, I have been living in a case of mistaken identity. When I look at Daisy, I don’t see myself, just the same characteristics. When outsiders mistake me for her, and vice versa, I wonder if they see something that I cannot. Being so accustomed to our differences, I never really took the time to focus on our similarities. Graduating with a Bachelor of Communications majoring in Public Relations and News and Magazine Photography, I seek to document my life in the spontaneous way that it comes. With a passion for food and travel, I find myself categorising my work into social documentary, focusing on portraiture.

I HAVE TURNED MY OCD TENDENCIES AND ATTENTION TO DETAIL INTO A HIGHLY MARKETABLE SKILL SET. This is both a blessing and a curse as I can’t help noticing everytime someone decides comic sans might be a good choice. Even though pixelated images are enough to ruin my day, I am passionate about both print and digital media. Print and digital media present different challenges and opportunities to provide unique design solutions. From preliminary research, gathering inspiration, through to pencil and paper sketching, and finally the digital finishes, my design process is continually evolving, improving and leading me to produce outcomes that I can be proud of. I enjoy the process of producing outcomes, but also of improving and developing my skills. I am always open to new creative experiences and opportunities. I also enjoy the team aspect of design as it provides opportunities to learn, see things from a different perspective and increase my network in this exciting field.

CREATE CHANGE

Creativity is a thought process; it is an incessant need to expand our horizons and see what is on the other side. The best design is often invisible, and the best design causes action. It changes our world. I am part of an industry that has the power to change the world, and I am unbelievably thrilled. My ultimate drive lies in creative direction and culture development. Combining my diverse range of skills to produce authentic high quality work, I plan to immerse myself wholly into the creative industry. Visual problem-solving is what I do best. I couldn’t imagine doing anything else.

BREE HAS BEEN WEIRD HER WHOLE LIFE. PEDANTIC WEIRD. From a very young age everything she could get her hands on has been wholeheartedly stylised to be, ‘just right’. She spent hours of her childhood refining her distinctive handwriting before she discovered that typography was a thing, now she has stepped up to work with a few more tools than just notepaper and a pencil. With an eye for detail parallel to Wes Anderson’s, Bree channels her eccentricity for perfectionism into design. She aims tirelessly to capture an appropriate aesthetic throughout a spectrum of media including graphic design, type and photography. Having obtained a Bachelor of Digital Media, Bree is on the hunt to utilise her skills and innovate in her industry of choice.

“I ALWAYS LOOK FOR OPPORTUNITIES TO WORK ON RESEARCH PROJECTS THAT CREATE SOCIAL CHANGE THROUGH DESIGN.”

I WILL FIND A SOLUTION AND MAKE IT HAPPEN Today’s societies are too complacent within their own countries and experiences. It is our responsibility as individuals to help create positive change in the world. My opportunity to do so is through my passion for design. Design has required me to be open-minded and comfortable with exploring the unfamiliar. I am passionate about discovering through research new applications and solutions to existing knowledge. This drives the depth and attention to detail that I will go to with my research. Another motivator is maintaining a strong integrity within all of my designs. I am committed to directing all of my energy towards activities that have a positive impact socially and environmentally. A multidisciplinary team approach brings about the new ideas and innovations that I seek. My future will be engaging in a dialogue of design solutions and systems that create a positive

impact all over the world. I have a strong desire to have the most impact on people living in poverty and in low-income communities. Within product design I focus on reducing waste, cost and increasing the life of the product. My strength lies within the research and concept ideation phase. I can apply my skills using 3D CAD modelling software as well as Adobe Creative Suite. I am confident in digital fabrication technologies such as CNC routing, laser cutting and 3D printing. It is with these skills that I seek to execute on my responsibility to make positive change in the world. Highlights: Golden Key International Honours Society Member. Griffith Award for Excellence 2011-2012. Industry placement with Yellow Goat Design 2013. Research Assistant within a Humanitarian Logistic Project at Griffith University 2014.

It all started for me in the 6th grade when Jackass The Movie was released. Like most kids I was filming my friends running amuck and hurting themselves. However I found myself taking things seriously, I was planning scenes, filming, editing and showcasing the videos through MSN messenger and email. I would steal my dad’s camcorder that he would constantly be hiding and locking in his room as he didn’t approve of our activities however I always found a way to get my videos out there. In high school I found myself still behind the camera as I was heavily involved in the BMX scene. Creating videos of my friends and even a few of myself using a tripod. Since then I completed a Diploma of Interactive Digital Media and a Bachelor of Digital Media at the Queensland College of Art.

Now I am making a career of my experience and knowledge of videography at a professional level. I am open to do all types of video from extreme sports to weddings & parties. I love a good challenge. If you wish to use my services send me an email or give me a call, until then peace!

CHENXING WANG Photography gives me the special experience of having a camera lens as my third eye with which I can discover and interact with the world objectively. Having had two years of Radio and Television Editing study and associated experiences at Shandong College of Art in China, as well as taking a 21-day university field study trip to Czech Republic and Poland and studying Photo Media at QCA in Australia, I am always open minded and enthusiastic to learn new things. Specifically, I am interested in the connection between Western and Chinese cultural art, combining the best of both to create multi-disciplinary and multi-dimensional work. I have enriched my academic knowledge and skills through my years of study, both in China and Australia. Meanwhile, accessing practical experiences has been an indispensable part of supplementing my university life. For example, my involvement with the Argus has offered me opportunities to gain an internship in a real working environment before I graduate. Also, volunteering in the Tourism Confucius Institute as an Event Photographer or an Event Assistant has been another unforgettable experience. Further, I have completed internships both in the Shandong TV Station and Youle magazine during the winter and summer holidays, thereby enhancing my talents and motivation. I feel so fortunate to have had the opportunity to study and experience my area of passion throughout recent years. My ambition is to now build on my skills and knowledge so as to gain meaningful employment in the fields of photography and the arts as well as to inspire others, both in China and Western countries, to develop their creative and cultural interests.

Each movement inspires me to reinterpret the styles by creating new contemporary designs to inspire the next generation of artists. I bring innovation and entrepreneurship to the fashion industry with my designs and bespoke creations of Shoe Couture Accessories allowing women to style their shoes as well as building their self-confidence. Along with being environmentally friendly, each pair is handmade out of wood and features laser etched patterns. The brand aims to create a product that is both natural and modern. Pairing the wood with laser etched patterns relevant to the wearer and myself, provides a meaningful and eye catching statement piece.

As an aspiring digital designer, I’m excited and prepared for what the next stage in my life will bring. During my time at university, I studied multiple disciplines including architecture, IT and creative design. I have since found my passion for digital design and therefore focused to develop my skills further towards video post-production, although I’m always eager to expand my knowledge. ART HAS ALWAYS BEEN AN ESCAPE FOR ME, A WAY TO DEAL WITH INTERNAL CONFLICTS CAUSED BY THE OUTSIDE WORLD. The act of drawing for me has always been less about the technicality but the thought and emotion that comes out bit by bit. From soft shading to a tight expressive line, my work bleeds with emotion, often dealing with themes of solidarity and isolation, depression and anxiety, the concept of ‘humanity’ and the loss of innocence and childhood. My pencil, ink and digital drawings rarely fail to deliver the emotional impact that goes into them. The way that we experience memories and emotions, largely impacts my work in a way that results in a feeling of weightlessness through abstract, yet figurative forms. Ultimately leading to a bleak representation of humanity, I feel that when we’re caught up in emotive states we tend to lose clarity of thought, which can often lead into an impasse in our sense of reality. The style I aim to achieve represents this with influences from both surrealist and expressionist styles without taking too much from one or the other, to create drawings that I hope engage the viewer with emotion and thought simultaneously.

After I graduated from high school, I decided to study to be a graphic designer and my mother suggested that I move to the Gold Coast to live with my brother and study there. Four years ago I had the opportunity to move from Kuwait to Australia and study. Australia and Kuwait are two very different places. Kuwaiti art is full of horses and buildings and the Arabic language, so learning design in Australia, the differences are obvious. I began the Bachelor of Digital Media at Queensland College of Art (QCA), Gold Coast majoring in Graphic Design. On the first day of university, I discovered many creative works that were very new to me. They were completely different artworks from my home country, Kuwait, and they gave me a feeling of awe and passion. It helped me to learn and understand new ways of doing things. I was inspired by my tutors who were graphic designers or artists and learned many new things from them. I grew into a professional graphic designer and my software skills developed quickly. Sometimes, it was difficult to work on the assessments but I enjoyed it! My tutors always supported me and gave feedback on my work. It’s thanks to them that I enjoy coming up with creative ideas and projects. I’m happy to be a graphic designer. It is my passion. My career goal is to continue work as a graphic designer and help others when they need design projects.

FOR MY PART, I TRAVEL NOT TO GO ANYWHERE, BUT TO GO. I TRAVEL FOR TRAVEL’S SAKE. THE GREAT AFFAIR IS TO MOVE – Robert Stevenson

EBONIE CHAN Being handed my first disposable film camera on a family holiday, what seems like a lifetime ago, created my passion for photography. Travel photography inspires me to explore the world in a new way. I love being abroad, on the open road and discovering the world I live in. From the emotional reaction when witnessing first hand the poverty people call home, to experiencing a new culture every day and tasting flavours I didn’t know existed, travel is something I value. It allows me to capture photographs that become forever-lasting memories of incredible people and destinations appreciated along the journey. Once graduating with a Bachelor of Digital Media, majoring in Photo Media and having completed a Diploma of Graphic Design, I hope to take my skills abroad.

DESIGN TECHNOLOGIES ARE CHANGING FAST. THERE ARE EXCITING OPPORTUNITIES AND NEW DIRECTIONS FOR BUSINESS AND DESIGN. It is a great time to be a designer. Advanced technologies are emerging that demand new skills and understanding in design. Exploring the emerging possibilities of 3D printing technologies is a career ambition of mine and my design strength is in conceptualising innovative models for translation into 3D printed objects and products. An example of this is the Orbit light, which I designed to demonstrate my knowledge of 3D printing materials and techniques. It was inspired by a study of patterning through light and developed through an exploration of complex geometries. I step outside current design parameters to create products using 3D printing that would otherwise not be possible to manufacture. During an internship in New York I gained invaluable knowledge on 3D printing technologies. This experience has fuelled my ambitions to challenge myself to explore how this technology will enter a variety of industries on an international level. If you are wondering how 3D printing can help your business through smart, informed design for 3D printing, contact me.

Being an art student has always made me feel awesomely different. I have been constantly working on art since I was a child, from simple doodles to sketches and watercolour practice. Art integrates me and integrates the world. I collect every single piece of element with art on it. My passion for graphic design, illustration and branding has increased after my study at Queensland College of Art. I am very familiar with colours, and I know the power of a small block of colour on a plain background. I prefer unconstrained lines and shapes and I know how much difference a hand-drawn pattern makes. I use both concise and complex elements in my work and I know that contrast makes things pop out. As a freelance designer I will keep exploring my creative potential and I look forward to building a friendly fashion and accessory brand in the future.

In the information era, digital design is becoming much more important than before. Accompanied with increasing number of websites, servers, smart devices and lifestyle. Simple but beautiful, user-friendly and responsive should be essential principles of web view design. Contributing to websites which respect users is my goal and passion. The cloud idea is live in the area. Responsive websites will dominate the future with the development of internet and smart devices.

Find your destination, my friend.

As a digital designer, you should understand people’s demands, both in website design and video production design. Digital design is deep, when you know more, actually you know less, this sense works every area. After graduating from the university, study as a master would be another choice, however, seeking a job is also significant. Working as a designer will be one of my dream destinations, but perpetual study is the core of a designer. Find your destination my friend, you will find another world you have never seen before.

I am a senior majoring in Digital Design. Studying hard in university, I have mastered several techniques of digital design, such as web design, game design, graphic design and so on. At leisure time, I like watching movies, playing mobile phone games or surfing the internet to know what happened recently, which sharpens my understanding about digital design. I am pretty sure that not only me but most people in the world are closely interacted with digital design in their daily life since it greatly enriches our life. What is more, a good digital design can also make a bridge between people and diverse cultures. The website that I designed not only teaches people how to raise their pets but also suggests how to construct mutual love with pets by feeding them. Good design skill is an important way to achieve aims and I am confident what I have learned could be of use for this purpose. I could make cultural elements in a design more evident and appealing through my digital design skills. Therefore, for my future career, the position of being an art editor of website, TV stations or magazines would fit me the best. From which I could make designs more culturally attractive.

My name is Heegwon Park and I am Korean. I studied drawing professionally and systematically since high school and attended university in Korea, studying Visual Design. Unfortunately, I was forced to quit my study and complete two years of army service. However, it didn’t end my life as an artist. In the army I was given precious opportunities to design posters and paint on walls. Those unforgettable experiences coloured my army life. Completing my service was a turning point for me. Instead of going back to study I decided to come to Australia on a working holiday. I struggled to get work within the creative industries without a qualification, so once again I decided to return to my studies. I chose 3D design, working with 3D printing. When I design, I lay more emphasis on development rather than creativity. I enjoy redesigning objects that already exist, and then further refine them. I am inspired by Dyson, in particular his vacuum and fans. Many people don’t have insight into the complete design process, but this side of design is very interesting to me. I aspire to create products that make life easier, convenient and comfortable. I look forward to gaining more experience within creative industries and refining my ability to use Solidworks, CNC, 3D printing, laser cutting machines and Adobe Suite. The skills I learnt in the army have also assisted me with my creative projects; leadership, partnership and teamwork.

“DESIGN STARTS BY ABSORBING IDEAS FROM THE PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT.”

“Design starts by absorbing ideas from the physical environment.” For myself, surf culture and the ocean are particularly influential in my work as they are fluid, full of motion and ever changing. They are a constant presence in the environment within which I live. The way water is constantly forming and reforming into different shapes fascinates me and allows my imagination to apply these forms to my designs. The projects I particularly enjoy stem from my personal needs and also incorporate water inspired aesthetic; such as the photorealistic 3D chair I am depicted in below. The product’s purpose is a futuristic gaming chair with arms to hold controllers, whereas its design incorporates ocean inspired blues and soft flowing forms. My studies at university have taught me the value of computer-aided design such as organic and parametric modelling and 3D printing. However, as my ambitions grow, I become more and more intrigued with manufacturing processes. As a professional I have the desire to further my knowledge of many of the developing technologies in the industry.

Being an African child at heart, home always inspires me. Not only impacting on my art and design, but in how I live my life. I know that anything is possible. I learnt from a young age, that if you want something badly enough—you must work hard. I have travelled far at a young age to be immersed in a inter-cultural society, allowing me to create work that demonstrates a new and innovative way of looking at things. I am not restricted by habit and I always create for a purpose. My work explores the relationship between art, technology, digital culture and contemporary society. I have developed a strong passion for typography, corporate identity and three-dimensional printing in the fashion world while maintaining balance by using painting and drawing in my own studio as therapy. I always seek experiences that allow me to further develop my project management, multi-tasking and collaborative skills to achieve the ultimate outcome. Art, fashion and design is my life and forever will be a large part of who I am.

The above photograph depicts a Skateistan participant performing an ‘ollie’ off of a colossal Buddhist statue during an outreach program held by the Cambodian organisation at the Porthiyaram Pagoda in Phnom Penh. This photograph captures the positive Western influence that Non-Government Organisations such as Skateistan are able to provide in order to strengthen the resilience of Cambodia’s people. The remnants of old conflicts still linger in the hearts, minds and land of Cambodia’s people. The country is still recovering from a turbulent history involving the catastrophic demolition of government, culture and society under the Khmer Rouge in the 1970s. However more recently, Western aid has played a major role in strengthening the resilience of Cambodia’s population, focusing on the development of new perspectives and generating a

prosperous future. Skateistan Cambodia is a NonGovernment Organisation whose aim is to provide additional support and development opportunities for youth aged between 5 and 18 years by establishing connections between skateboarding and education. The aim is to promote visual learning and critical thinking These opportunities are particularly significant as they cultivate the participant’s ability to understand local issues, as well as their thoughts on crafting a brighter future. I hope that my photography encourages viewers to make informed decisions regarding the way in which they are governed and affected by change in contemporary society. I intend to create compelling stories that, similar to the objectives of Skateistan Cambodia, influence people to interpret the world with a fresh perspective.

When I was eight, my family went on their first trek through the outback from Byron Bay to the Arafura Sea. My days where filled with an expanse of landscapes, landmarks and local points of interests. I marvelled at the starry sky in Charleville, the Black Stump in Blackall and the inspiring architecture of the Stockman’s Hall of Fame in Longreach. Nothing prepared me for the beauty of the open grass plains of the Northern Territory. I was awe struck by the majesty and colour of Uluru contrasted against the brilliant blue winter sky. The openness of the beautiful landscape and the variety within the natural habitat have inspired my fascination for open spaces, open planning and flexible options. Natural lines and curves can be identified within my screen divider. The two-metre curved screen has a hive-like surface that allows for the natural flow of air and light. There are three individual pieces that have been designed to interlock in different formation to emulate the seasonal changes within nature. The colour and lightness of the material reflect the richness of the grass plain of the Australian outback. Change and renewal is evident in nature and this is an important consideration with my design. Designing simple, functional pieces that have the ability to be integrated with other pieces to create a new function is my aim. Working across a number of fields while completing my degree in Digital Media, has enabled me to hone my skills with market research, conceptual drawings, product development and 3D modelling. Combining my skills with the lessons that nature can provide is my aspirational goal within the creative industry.

Well, the piece of paper says I am. Studying a Bachelor of Digital Media at Griffith QCA has been an interesting jaunt. Seeing such creative young minds in my fellow classmates and experiencing the wealth of knowledge from my teachers both excited and horrified me. Having transferred from a business degree I was amazed at the options available to us, yet I struggled with the thought of having free reign over so much of an assignment. It eventually became a battle of Left Brain vs. Right Brain, Logical Jessie vs. Creative Jessie. While Logical Jessie was able to take notes, work to a schedule and handle the research, Creative Jessie was able to doodle, spend hours on Pinterest and design things. The two worked well together for some time, until the courses progressed to purely Graphic Design based assessment. All Adobe Creative Suite and no essay writing makes Jessie a dull girl. So as my classmates exercised their Right Brain muscles and as their creativity improved, I became less of a creative entity and more of a logical being. Admitting that I am not a Graphic Designer was never a difficult decision, however the next step in my quest proved formidable—where do I go from here? Luckily, Bachelor of Digital Media students are given the opportunity to experience everything in first year. With introductory courses from all majors being part of our first year study, we were privileged enough to receive lectures from professionals in Fine Art, Graphic Design, 3D Design, Digital Design, Web Design, Photography, and even Architecture. The Art Theory courses blew my mind. Logical Jessie was in heaven with concepts, theory, research and essays, while Creative Jessie was able to marvel at the brilliance of the artistic greats. Web Design kept Creative Jessie happy by allowing her to consider colours, images and layouts, while Logical Jessie was able to focus on coding. Architect ural lectures also engaged both sides of my brain through numbers and aesthetics. Once I realised my selected path was not the right one, I was able to return to these first year experiences and consider my next step. No matter who I spoke with, the same response was voiced—‘what do you love, what is your passion?’. This question becomes problematic with a person such as myself, because there is no

one dominant passion to speak of. I cannot confine myself to simply one hobby, and I do not find myself discussing a singular topic with fiery passion. I have many hobbies, and am passionate about everything. So the question then becomes ‘what are you good at? What are your strengths and weaknesses?’. Finally! Something I can answer with certainty. Logical Jessie is determined, analytical, and responsible with a strong work ethic, however will struggle to admit that she is also stubborn and very hard on herself, with an excessive determination to be independent. Creative Jessie is caring, giving and of course creative, however can acknowledge her temper, shyness and intolerance. My strengths are; writing, studying, following procedures, organising and burping. My weaknesses are; public speaking, working in groups and cheeseburgers. So, how do I work with this to satisfy both my Logical and Creative sides in a singular career? The simple answer is don’t. Do it all instead. Now to begin my next list of questions. What can I start straight away? What will take more time/ money than I currently have? Which of these is more of a hobby than a career? I can start Web Design now. Having already completed one course and gained contacts within the profession, I can incorporate this into my final assessment and complete a TAFE course after graduation. Architecture will consume the most time and money—neither of which I have in abundance at the moment—so this one can be put to the back-burner for a few years. Art Theory is yet another emerging passion, and something I can pursue in my own time as an additional hobby. Upon answering these, my path begins to straighten and it becomes clear to me that my quest is one of knowledge. My very first Graphic Design assignment tasked me with the creation of an image that reflected my feelings towards being a First Year at QCA. It was a weird and wonderful world to me back then and I felt like I could do anything, so my submission reflected just that. A picture of myself standing in a forest of tall dark trees, looking through an open door to see a pair of hands offering me the world. Although I know that I will not pursue a graphic design career, I know that completing this degree has still offered me the world. I am not a graphic designer, I am a conqueror.

Actually, this is just a part of my homepage which includes techniques like JavaScript and PHP. Even though this is my best work I do need to improve it until it will attract more and more people. me Hey, I’m Joel Montgomery, and I first discovered my love of graphic design when I missed a day of primary school, then came in the next day to find everyone working on a ‘What Career Do I Want’ assignment. I peeked over at another students work and saw the words ‘Graphic Designer’. Since then, I have discovered that coincidentally, graphic design really is the field for me. My style is quite bold and colourful, and can be quite corporate. Coming into my first semester at university I would have said that I would like to specialise in print media, however, now, several years later, I hope to do a little bit of everything. Print, web, video, I love it all.

DIAMONDS TO DIGITAL

Hi I’m John. I am passionate about Motion Graphics and Digital Compositing. I have always been very attracted to Arts in general, therefore, after I graduated from high school, I chose to study Fine Arts and specialise in jewellery design. In the final semester of my Fine Arts Diploma, I became strongly interested in Visual Arts, so I expanded my studies into this field and I joined a Visual Media School where I gained a Diploma of Audiovisual Media. I worked for a few years designing and making jewellery for my own business until I decided to focus all my energy and time on working as a Video Editor and Motion Graphics Designer for a post-production company.

In general, I enjoy computers and technology, and as a result, I spend most of my time in front of a computer screen. I see myself in the future teaching and passing on what I have learned during all these years of hard work to the new generation of Digital Artist. These days I’m keenly interested in Web Development and its potential for the future, so I want to give it a try and improve my coding skills.

I spent many years of my life in ‘the dark world’ of the postproduction business. Please let me explain. ‘The dark world’ refers to the fact that post-production suites are usually darkly-lit places. So, there is a joke in the industry that says, that after a while, anyone who spends considerable time in the ‘dark world of the post-production business’ becomes white-skinned like ‘vampires’ because of the lack of sunlight… but I love to be a vampire! I am passionate about 3D graphics. Every time I have the opportunity, I like to experiment and incorporate 3D graphics into my projects, especially when I’m doing Motion Graphics.

Motion graphics, film production and 3D modelling are my specialties. I spend a great deal of time researching projects to ensure their quality and detail, and I believe my outcomes reflect this. My greatest qualities are my ability to learn quickly, work well in a team and creating innovative outcomes for challenging projects. What’s more, I am a great communicator as I can speak several languages.

My passion is 3D modelling and rigging scenes for animation. My sources of inspiration are shapes and forms from the world around me, from nature, human beings to buildings. This can been seen in my illustration above, which is based on my father’s eyes. Most of my work is influenced from where I come from and my upbringing.

EXPLORE REALITY

Design by pen and paper is a classic style at present. Nowadays, digital design has become the most important part in our life. People want something that looks more real than what they see. We are pursuing reality on the screen for movie theatre, computer monitor, television and smart devices. As a digital designer, I started by playing with 3D objects such as 3D games and watching 3D movies. I became a producer from being an experienced consumer and this taught me what consumers want and what they enjoy. During my study of Bachelor of Digital Media, majoring in Digital Design, I solved my curiosity of how they made 3D products. I also improved my skills as a 3D modeller and 3D visual compositor. I am a most passionate person in digital design who pursues more reality.

BRANDS ARE RELATIONSHIPS... WE FALL IN LOVE & TRUST THEM The journey through QCA Griffith University has been a high accomplishment for me. I began my path with the desire to work in visual communication, and I have been educated in the latest design principles. As I progressed through my degree of Digital Media, I developed an interest in brand development; this directed me to take electives in marketing (covering topics such as Market Research and Consumer Psychology). Consumer Psychology was one of the subjects this semester that really molded me into the desire to point my ambition towards brand development. Lecturer Debra Grace showed us how brands can be exposed to consumers with successful strategies and how important it is to deliver the right needs and wants of a target audience. I have a passionate desire to be a part of ethical brands and marketing is something I never get tired of, as I love learning about new trends and cultures through market research. Brand development is not just about having a name and logo. It is about building trust and a connection with the consumer because we respond to brands like relationships and the key to brand success is connecting with the consumer on an emotional level. Moccachinos was a re-brand I created for a local cafe in Southport, Gold Coast. This was my first branding experience and one of my proud achievements. I discovered a lot about the hospitality industry and the evolving trend of hipster ambience. Cafe Moccachinos was repositioned with the vision to create a comfortable environment for the public to take their family, with the enjoyment of a friendly experience. In my final semester I wanted to take on a real life project that allowed me to show my practice of marketing and brand development. Carly Neilsenbeck, founder of Golden Goddess, offered me a fantastic opportunity to reposition her product. I applied my design and marketing skills to employ effective strategies to this project and I worked alongside graphic designer, Natasha Smith. This experience has given me the skill to work with other creative professionals, and has helped me discover my strengths. I would like to continue to follow my path of brand development, and will be focusing on creating strong brand personalities. This semester I completed 100 hours of work placement in the Liveworm studio, Gold Coast. Creative Director, Rae Cooper, gave me the task of marketing the Gold Coast Creative magazine for Queensland College of Art. This involved creating awareness on social media platforms, printed advertisements, and faceto-face promotion. After my time at Griffith I have used my marketing and design skills cohesively, and I strongly believe that brands are always successful when delivered from a good marketing strategy.

DESIGN & ENGINEERING My education focuses on product development. It is project-driven, combining the disciplines of creative design and innovation with studies in engineering. I have gained knowledge in industrial design, statics and mechanics, materials and processes, marketing, project management etc. Each semester is based on solving real life problems. I have gained skills to design and develop high quality products for both national and international markets. Since I can remember, I have been intrigued by design and have always had the desire to be part of a design team working on creating desirable quality products. In product development, I am able to implement both my creative design skills and my practical engineering skills into innovatively solving problems. I am able to quickly generate concepts on paper, and then model them digitally and physically in order to anticipate problems and find solutions.

Product design has been a major passion throughout my life, so in 2012 I decided to pursue it by moving to a new city to study a Bachelor in Design Engineering. This education combines design with engineering by teaching you every step from concept sketches through to actually implementing it into the market, with all the technicalities in between. A typical project starts with generating ideas using different methods and hand sketching. Afterwards, 3D drawings, 3D scanning, 3D printing, Photoshopping and rendering are used to visualise the product. Materials are chosen, prototypes are created and technical worksheets are made for production. We also do technical calculations to design the products so they actually work. All of these drawings and calculations require support through marketing, economy, strategies etc. When the project is finished, a complete business plan is ready to be presented. Throughout the whole project, it is important to ask what the consumers want and take their opinions into account. I find these skills important and useful for my future. My goal is a working position in the household or furniture industry where I can create something unique.

CREATE AND ORIGINATE

~ Art Originated through my Creations

Melissa Spratt is a young emerging artist living on the Gold Coast. Interested in artistic practices from an early age, Melissa went on to study a Bachelor of Digital Media, majoring in Fine Art at Griffith University, Queensland College of Art. Having shown work in numerous exhibitions and becoming a part of several artistic collectives, she has gained a range of skills. Finding influence through material choices and production processes, Spratt has worked with various mediums; paint, photography and drawing, but her most recent work is in installation and sculpture. Being very meticulous about each aspect of her work, she creates subtle abstraction and interaction with personal identity as subject matter. Seeking advice, wisdom and knowledge about the creative industry is now at the forefront of Spratt’s ambitions. Fabricating art work is only one of her

passions. She has a knack for organisation and is interested in gallery systems and curation. Spratt is continually creating and looking to broaden her skills, being open to all new opportunities. “I describe my practice as self reflective; my most inner feelings and contemplations, a subconscious recount of my passions and vulnerabilities. I seek answers and hold curiosity for belonging and becoming, self-identity, human interactions and perceptions. Finding theoretical concerns through internal processes is brought out by material choices. Creating a sense of identity and selfportraiture in a non-literal manner, I articulate this through an abundance of emotional questions. Having reliance on the tactile nature of human discovery sets challenges not only for myself to achieve and overcome, but also for the viewer.”

I have always been proud of my diverse cultural heritage; Dutch, Maori, Chinese and English. Through these differences I can appreciate and be sensitive towards the differences in others. I think it is this melting pot from the different corners of the globe that has given me the instinct to travel and experience what the world has to offer. On my own trips through various countries I found the people are so insular with little to no opportunity for them to expand their horizons and yet they seem so worldly in their philosophies. The everyday and banal moments that often slips past the eye of mass media are what I believe need to be put in the spotlight.

Through capturing people’s lives, we can start to understand the world we live in Through capturing people’s lives, we can start to understand the world we live in as a whole and make more informed critical judgments, not assumptions leading to wrong decisions. Photography should inform and bring to light the issues some might not regularly think of. Everyone is entitled to basic human rights and photography can lend a hand in communicating the unheard voice out into the public eye.

Design has been a part of my life since I was a young boy. I grew up watching Japanese and American cartoons. My favourites included ‘One Piece’ and ‘Bleach’. When I was 14, Japanese cartoons became forbidden on Chinese television. There was no notice, we woke up one day, turned on the television and all of the pixels that we loved were gone. The Chinese government decided to promote and protect the Chinese culture by limiting our access to foreign media. Today this still affects my friends at home by limiting our access to any foreign websites. Sites like eBay.com, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube are completely blocked from China. You can imagine the excitement Chinese students have when they come to Australia for the first time. Sometimes the things we crave to see aren’t the beaches, shopping or animals—it’s the freedom of the internet, HD videos and social media. Rather than go pat a koala—we can download one, or watch it in cartoon form. As a digital designer, I am passionate about reconnecting China to a rich digital culture. Politically we may be limited, however these limits can also be sources of inspiration. It’s time for Chinese designers to develop strong concepts and create outcomes that celebrate what is unique to us. In particular I look forward to designing and bringing life to Chinese animation. I often go back to my time as a 14-yearold boy looking for his cartoon heroes. Now I will design cartoons for the children back home and show them the magic of animation—being lost in an imaginary world of colours, animals who talk, robots and fantasy lands.

About two years ago I came to Australia from Qingdao, China. Qingdao is famous for its beer. This is funny because Chinese people don’t usually like beer. It’s one of the big differences I noticed in Australia—the culture here with drinking is very different. One of the biggest shocks to me is seeing people so loud and crazy in the street! The pub culture was so new to me. It’s rare in China to see someone my age drink 30 beers in one night—but it’s common in Australia. Even more so on the Gold Coast, where I am now living to study my degree in Digital Media. My family and I decided that I would come to Australia to study because it’s so important to have a good understanding of different countries, cultures, people and education. This experience is a great foundation for my future career in television. (One more thing. Before I came here, my father told me I shouldn’t start smoking. I would just like to say “Hi Dad, I’m not smoking!”) Many of my friends back home are looking for careers in business, government … secure ‘office jobs’. These kinds of jobs are great because they offer security, but they are so boring to me. Everyday—the same thing. Over and over again. Nothing new. No new experiences. Always at a desk. Inside. I know this isn’t the life I want! I am the kind of person who needs creative freedom. My first taste of working in television was short, but I knew after only two months this was the career I was born to have. Every day was something new, I felt free. Sometimes inside, sometimes outside, new people, new ideas and projects. I am so excited about my future life within creative industries. If you ask me what my life will be like in five years time, I would tell you that I will be working hard with my peers within a creative studio in Australia, creating videos and taking photos. Eventually I know I will return to China to be with my family. I can’t tell you where I will be in 10 years and what I will be doing. The great thing about digital media is that technology changes so fast—who knows what new equipment, software … and whatever else the world will have then.

ROSIE O’BRIEN THE MODERN-DAY JOURNALIST YOU OPEN YOUR EYES, FLICK ON THE ‘TODAY’ SHOW, ROLL OVER AND CHECK YOUR PHONE TO FIND THE EMAILS ARE ALREADY FILING IN AND THERE’S A BUZZING BEEHIVE OF ACTIVITY ON ‘TWITTER’, IT’S BARELY 6AM. Welcome to the world of the modern-day journalist. The field’s tough, I know that. Gone are the days where simply passing Grade 10 was enough, today the expectation is a University degree, and then some. To stand out you need to be dynamic, you need to be across every medium, to be the complete package really. This is why I’ve combined my Journalism Bachelor with a Public Relations and Photo Media specialisation, covering communication on every level. It was six years ago when I won the award of Channel Nine’s Junior News Cadet, and ever since then I knew I was meant to be a Journalist. The thrill of doing something that you love and being told you’re actually good at it, is a feeling some people spend a lifetime searching for. It wasn’t until late high school days when I began learning traditional film photography that I realised combining my two passions was ideal. There’s something magical about the way an image can capture a moment in history, a mood, and no matter how eloquent you are with your words, nothing can tell the story better than that image. I have been fortunate enough to be able to work with models on developing my focus and lighting skills and alongside the Gold Coast’s YHES young parenting program, visually revealing their personal lives. Throughout my last year at Griffith University, I’ve had the opportunity to complete work experience in both Journalism and PR organisations at Channel 9 and 10 in Brisbane, City of Gold Coast, Multisport magazine, and Southern Cross Austereo (SeaFM and GoldFM) which has allowed me to build a varied and extensive portfolio available at rosieobrien.wordpress.com. My goal is to continue with broadcast journalism and reporting. Achievements: 2008 Channel Nine News Junior Cadet Champion and won $5,000 for my school. 2011 Received direct entry into Griffith University to study a Bachelor of Journalism. 2014 Sub Editor of Griffith’s ‘The Argus’ magazine.

HI MY NAME IS

I’m Ryan Pobar and I’m a graphic designer. My style of design is a mix of my various interests and influences. This is most evident in my clothing brand Mildvibe. My main strengths as a creative practitioner are in Illustrator, InDesign, After Effects and Photoshop as well as secondary skills in organic modelling, photography and video. I enjoy the interdisciplinary overlap of these areas and taking new approaches when creating works. I have completed internships this year at Liveworm and Halfnine design agency and I am eager to get out into the industry next year.

I love visually appealling things and for as long as I can remember, I’ve grown up around a vast range of creativity. Art, design and music. I believe this is where my desire for a creative path arose. I have been surrounded by creative people and am passionate about continuing my life on this wonderful expressive journey. I have always been very focused on the aesthetics of objects. I enjoy the physical and tactile design elements and enjoy a hands on approach. My path for the future is open and I am always looking for new things to learn and new skills to master. I developed Blume, an eco-friendly soy wax candle brand that attempted to challenge the usual conventions of a feminine candle. I really enjoyed the physical design appects of this as much as the digital process. I am passionate about fashion, upcycling garments and repurposing objects. Above is a silkscreen printed singlet based on methods learnt at QCA. Prior to commencing my Digital Media degree, I had no previous experience except designing things for my own pleasure. I love that I have learnt how to channel this passion into a career. I have a lot to continue learning as a designer and am eager to emerse myself in a creative career full of challenges, whether it be here in Australia or somewhere abroad. I’m Ruby.

HANDS CAPTURED IN CONVERSATION Beyond spoken word, there are endless modes of communication and expression that we, humans, use with little recognition. This photographic work showcases a less-explored relationship in conversation, with hands as the speaker and eyes as the listener. One visual language, photography, documents another, sign language. The process, movement and layers of sign language are documented through layers of photographic exposures to emphasise the unnoticed moments of communication. Making us question—How do we speak? How do we share ideas? It could be by sharing experiences with words, body language or artistic expression. We are all in constant communication with one another. How do you express yourself? Whether it is the graceful movement of a ballet dancer, the first time visiting a vibrant city, or listening to a fascinating life story, the world’s visuality and noise engages me. Storytelling and creative expression allow me to deeper engage with the world around me, and share those new ideas with a greater audience. I seek projects that evoke thought and reflection, continuing to develop my own layers of communication.

It all started from my high school years, when I got into a subject called graphic design in Grade 10. Since then, my interests in graphic design grew bigger and bigger. I started to see myself in the future as a graphic designer, rather than anything else. Being raised in a family with creative backgrounds, it gave me more opportunities to be more creative than other people. Nearly finishing my Bachelor degree at Griffith University majoring in Digital Design, I’ve gained knowledge of design software, especially in Adobe After Effects, Adobe Illustrator, Solidworks and HTML design. With all the knowledge I’ve gained from this degree, I would like to get out there into the real world and show other people what I can do.

remembering and longing Simone Louise Gillespie is a Gold Coast based visual artist whose artwork traverses different mediums including installation, sculpture, assemblage and painting. As the mother of two little girls, Simone has studied the final years of her degree part-time. In Simone’s art practice there is a continual exploration of materials garnered from her domestic environment as she explores the complexities of being a parent and its daily emotional and physical pulls. In a rather open process, Simone transforms bed-linen and clothing that once belonged to children into forms, putting them into space. These materials are at odds with what they become—often large scale plaited sculptures that unfold and unravel in the spaces they occupy. “In constructing the works I loop, twirl and delicately trail the fabric into hundreds of metres of tangled rope to suggest the tenderness, uncertainty and interminability of the parental experience,” Simone says. “Embedded in the works is an emotional component of remembering and longing that is facilitated through the physical act of plaiting.” Simone is a finalist of several national Australian art prizes including the Paddington Art Prize and the Churchie Emerging Art Award. Her artworks are held in private collections nationally as well as corporate collections in south-east Queensland including The Mater Private Hospital and The Gold Coast University Hospital.

I love seeing my ideas and outcomes progress from an idea to an image. Tiny Tang is a t-shirt brand designed for my puppy and the characters are based on my family and friends —the people who I love. Majoring in Graphic Design has given me the skills to see my ideas come to life and develop a deeper passion for all things creative.

WENJING (OLIVIA) TANG

I have become passionate about digital design, especially the use of 3D to create a fantasy world with magic stories, environments and characters. This has been a long term dream for me. In pursuit of my passion, I have learned how to build 3D modelling from the highly respected Dr Dale Patterson, who is the Digital Design course convener at Griffith University. Previous to my current study in Australia, I studied Digital Design and Television in Shandong University of Art, which is located in China, for two years. Since coming to Australia I have been fortunate in expanding both my skills and experiences. For example, in 2013, I participated in a university organised visit to Poland and CzechRepublic for 21 days which greatly enhanced my artistic and cultural knowledge and experience. Such diverse experiences have given me the opportunity to combine western and eastern culture which has expanded my mind and made me more creative. To further develop my skills, knowledge and experience, I participated in a real work environment during my recent vacation period. This involved working in the Shandong Digital Publishing Media Co., LTD, for one month. That experience taught me a great deal and provided me with many practical skills and ideas as well as helping me decide that this field is worthy of my lifetime dedication.

Into The Mysterious Digital World

This project’s creative idea is from real life, and a wish to design a warm house for dogs. Solidworks skills helped me to design and create it. This Dog House combines bedroom, automatic pet feeder and water bottle. It has a beautiful appearance and three functional requirements, suitable for small to medium sized dogs. I’ve always been captivated by the idea of creating in 3D space, whether it be characters for animation or models for buildings. It’s like creating life by myself. I look forward to working with likeminded individuals to create something that challenges and captivates the imagination of people.

FREELANCE PHOTOGRAPHER & STORY TELLER I was interested in taking images when I was eight-years-old, in China. But at that time, the only equipment I had was a simple lomo camera from my father. I used to think I might become an accountant or a marketing analyst, but it is not my cup of tea. I am the person who need to communicate with real people. When I got a chance to learn photojournalism at Griffith University, it was the first time I combined my interests and reality together. Using cameras to document everyday life is my way to remember life. Learning how to become a photojournalist, along with media studies in the Bachelor of Communication, has offered me a great chance to interact with the real world and people.

My hometown is Qingdao, China, which is a charming coastal city. I grew up there and witnessed the development of the city. The culture of the city has often brought me creative inspiration. YAQI SU • 0452508830 • 1005454973@QQ.COM

When I first began my studies, it was difficult to not compare myself to my peers. The quality of work that people have a natural ability to produce is amazing. At that time, I would look at my own work and I never felt like it was good enough. It was a tough period in my life and I began to question if my ‘life path’ should be design or if I had made a mistake. I returned to my home Jinan, China, feeling low. Soon after I found a job in a design studio creating promotional work and advertising. It didn’t take long for my confidence to grow and I suddenly realised, good design wasn’t just what happened in the classroom. Good design is about understanding what my director and clients want and need. Good design is meeting the requirements of the brief and experimenting with new ways to approach design problems. I quickly discovered that as a junior designer, my opinion was not as important as the opinion of my boss. It was a challenge for me to accept the feedback and criticism of my boss, even more so when I knew the changes I was asked to make just didn’t aesthetically work. “Make the logo BIGGER!” “Make ALL the text bigger!!” “FILL ALL OF THE WHITE SPACE!!” I have grown to understand that working as a designer means to listen to instructions and get the job done. This doesn’t make me unhappy though, this makes me excited. I am excited to improve my skill level, I am excited to increase my ability to critique my work and articulate my design choices. I came back to Australia after a year, feeling like I had improved so much with my graphic design skills. I showed my work samples to a signage company in Brisbane. He shook his head and told me I had some more skills to learn. Again, I felt deflated. But now I realise that it’s ok, being a great designer means to always learn, always grow and that everyone will have a different opinion. The more experience I have, the better I will become. One day I will be in charge of the design decisions and I will help new designers find their way and grow in confidence. One of the biggest challenges of international designers is that the aesthetic of different cultures is so different. Again—just more for me to learn, and I can’t wait to know more!

YUANBO (ELBERT) NIE

Deep knowledge of materials and manufacturing methods to be able to produce a complete product includes researching, concept development and computer 3D & 2D visualisations. I used 3D printing, 3D modelling, 3D scanning, laser cutting and CNC routing technology to create products. I would like to utilise my expertise to create an ideal product which I would want myself. In order to attract a lot of consumers I would prefer to create products that are not familiar, but perhaps popular in another country or little developed products. Also, a product that is vibrant and unique has a high chance of winning popularity. Therefore, I like a refined product. However, I am more keen to create something new. For example, Benz invented a car when there was no such thing. I am sure Benz thought about how to move to different locations without using rail. I would like to find problems and solve each situation by providing a new inventive product. Adding to that, there are no competitors so there is a lot of opportunity to succeed. Therefore, I want to explore Industrial Design, Interior Design, Digital Design and more, rather than stick to just one area of design. In order to create new products, I need to research potential problems that people are having now and create problem-solving products for now and for the future.
