TThe oldest inland city in South Carolina, Camden is host to a variety of historical places and attractions that an enjoyer of Carolinian culture should not miss. From horse racing to Revolutionary War battlefields, this quaint Southern city is a prime spot for a historically-inspired experience.

Every spring, Camden houses the Carolina Cup, one of the largest steeplechase events in America. The event attracts horse racing fans from all over the world; many consider it to be South Carolina’s rendition of the Kentucky Derby. Spectators often show up in colorful outfits for the occasion. No matter the weather, the spectacle of the historic steeplechase is alive and well in Camden. In addition to the race, the Carolina Cup also hosts food and clothing vendors, and a contest for those with the most elaborate hats.

For the historically inclined, Camden is home to notable battlefields of the American Revolution and the Civil War. Nearby Boykin’s Mill saw the last Civil War battle fought in South Carolina, and the site is open to the public at all hours of the day. Visitors can pay their respects at the humble obelisk on the site.

The Revolutionary Battle of Camden features an audio tour where guests can listen to short podcast clips that accompany each part of the battlefield, learning of pivotal events that shaped this dramatic turn in American history. Visitors from out of town can spend the night at one of the town’s elegant and historically-inspired inns. Old McCaskill’s Farm is a farmhouse with bed and breakfaststyle accommodations. Guests are also welcome to tour the working farm and see how the McCaskill family tends to their animals. The guest rooms are like something out of your favorite period drama, complete with wood-frame beds and an antique sitting area. Naturally, the sitting area boasts a game table and a spinning wheel for good measure. Those with more modern interests should stay at the nearby Colony Inn. Despite the name, Colony Inn features all the modern hotel amenities ranging from a swimming pool to boat and RV plugins to ensure those from far and wide are taken care of.

It would not be the South without antique stores, and Camden is home to plenty. While spending the day in town, be sure to browse any number of local antique shops for that quaint and unique item you didn’t know your home needed. Taste the local flavors at the farmers market, and be sure to come home with at least one local barbecue sauce or produce item.

Enthusiasts of the South will find themselves right at home in Camden, and those who aren’t will no doubt be won over by the classic charm of this little town.
