A REPORT ON GIVING 2023
“You don’t have to let your situation define how far you can go. Just because you might not have the same finances at home doesn’t mean you don’t have the same heart and charisma, passion and energ y as anybody else.” Liz, Bursary Award Holder and one of the three heads of school.
The children featured in this report are among the 35 philanthropically funded Sixth Form Bursary Award Holders at BGS today. All volunteered to be part of our 500 Campaign.
Thank you... I am delighted to share with you this year’s Report on Giving. It highlights the huge difference already being made by our 500 Campaign, and I am incredibly grateful to all those in our community who have given so generously. Those donations are already changing young lives in Bristol, and in doing so, they are making our school an even better place.
BGS is in a great place at the moment we are the largest we have ever been, with demand high in all year groups. This is, in no small part, thanks to the outstanding care we provide, our strong academic results, and the huge range of sport, music, drama and other cocurricular activity (all of which were noted in our brilliant May inspection report). We are a school at the top of its game, gaining a national reputation not just for our brilliant core offering, but for the social conscience of our community, and our desire to use our advantages for the wider good. We are resolute in our belief that access to such an exceptional and rounded education should not be limited by ability to pay;
hence our 500 Campaign, which is now supporting the highest numbers of bursary award holders to school. I am fortunate to have been elected Chair of HMC (The Heads’ Conference) for 202425; a recognition, I like to think, of all that BGS is doing, and leading the way on. My work as Chair Elect this year has brought into sharper focus than ever the financial and political threats facing the independent schools sector, threats which will – unintendedly, but undoubtedly – work to make our schools less diverse and harder to access. As it is, I have to write heartbreaking letters to two or three dozen children each year to say that they have performed well enough to gain admission
to BGS, but that we have no more Bursary Award funding for them, and this number will only go up if the political threats come to fruition. That is why it is so important that our award-winning 500 Campaign succeeds, and that we keep the fundraising momentum up. Thank you – to all those who have already given, and to all those who will continue to give, or who are considering giving for the first time. Your donations are having a positive and immediate impact, and are you are changing lives – and BGS – for the better.

As we approach the 500th anniversary of our Royal Charter in 2032, we encourage our BGS community to support bright and able children who deserve to be here at Bristol Grammar School.
Changing lives Our aim is to enable one in four children to receive a means tested bursary of at least 50%. We plan to raise £12million by 2032. The students who benefit, come from disadvantaged backgrounds – together with families who need a percentage of support and work hard to meet the rest of the fees. In all cases, we believe that
creating opportunity for all children, regardless of background and financial means benefits the school, the city of Bristol and the world beyond. As a team, we are passionately committed to increasing this opportunity and our vision is owned and shared by the Governing Board, the Senior Leadership
Team of the school and every member of our teaching and support staff. Increasingly, support from parents and most significantly our Old Bristolians is delivering significant funding that has enabled us to change lives within the first two years of the campaign. Over £1.5million has been raised already.

The Impact... ...in numbers This year, over 100 children are benefitting from means-tested bursarial support throughout the senior school.
Thank you: We have reached our biggest cohort of philanthropically funded Bursary Award holders. These children are here thanks entirely to the generosity of donors who have given to the 500 Campaign and those who continue to give back to the school in the memory of Michael Booker, a respected Classics Master who initiated the bursary programme. We are also grateful for the continued support and generosity of our trusts, Pople, John James, Denman and Brown who have enabled talented and committed children to fulfil their potential at BGS for many years.
It has meant the world to me and my family and allowed me to be the best version of myself in a loving and supportive environment. To our donors, I’d say thank you for allowing us to flourish.”

Creating a sense of belonging: Celebrating Bursary Award Holders It’s really hard to put into words what it means to be offered a bursary. From my daughter’s perspective, it really, genuinely was a dream come true for her. The positive influence is quite literally life changing. If you have the means, it’s difficult to imagine something you’d be able to provide to a young person’s life that would have more benefit.” Steve Banks, parent of a Bursary Award holder
The 500 Campaign is now an award-winning initiative (Institute for Development Professionals in Education IDPE - Campaign of the Year Award, 2023). A key difference with our work to that of many other independent schools is that we have changed the culture of bursary support to redefine bursary recipients as “Bursary Award holders”. Our aim is to make every child feel a sense of belonging. Bursary Award holders have earned their place and we are richer for having them here. They are found
amongst our leading lights – star actors and musicians, captains, prefects, heads of school, and contributors in so many other ways – and this continues well beyond their time at BGS. They inspire others and in doing so, amplify the strong culture of learning, kindness, camaraderie, and inclusivity that are the hallmarks of Bristol Grammar School.

These students have achieved something fantastic, and we want to celebrate it. They’ve earned this Bursary Award and they deserve to be here.” Dan Watkins, Head of Classics, Bursary Liaison Officer
A team effort Key to our strategy in changing lives through bursaries at BGS, has been to create a “Find, Fund, Flourish” team. Fundraising with the support of our wider community, is central to our work. However, without the expertise and talent of Marketing and Admissions, our Finance team and the Pastoral support that continues throughout each child’s school experience, none of the amazing children who are now benefitting from an education at BGS, would be here.
FIND Our Marketing and Admissions team work to destigmatise bursaries and create a sense of belonging for potentially nervous first-time parents looking to start a journey at BGS for their child. Our Finance team work sensitively to identify and support applicants in need of significant financial assistance, visiting their homes and developing a sense of trust and understanding about potential need and support before entry.
Since launching the campaign an increasing number of Sixth Form students (and parents) have volunteered to be part of our promotional films and literature, suggesting that a culture of acceptance and pride in being an “award holder” is becoming established.
FUND Our Development team work to engage our wider BGS Community to encourage financial support for bursaries and to develop long-term relationships with leadership donors and trusts who have the capacity to support more than one child.
FLOURISH Our Pastoral Care team, including two of our Deputy Heads and a newly appointed “Bursaries Liaison Officer” work to support Bursary Award holders from the moment they start and, in many cases, will have been on the initial home visits. We also encourage Upper Sixth Form students to act as mentors.
We have also appointed a Bursary Liaison Officer to act as lead pastoral care contact for those students who may require additional financial and emotional support.
We provide additional financial support for extracurricular trips and activities.

Giving Day 7TH & 8TH NOVEMBER 2023
You can become part of someone’s story and change lives for bright and able children who deserve a chance to shine at BGS. Opportunities to donate to our campaign are available throughout the year, but joining in our online Giving Day celebrations means that every pound donated will be more than doubled thanks to a generous matching donor. WHAT IS GIVING DAY? Giving Day is a 36-hour celebration and fundraising challenge for the whole BGS Community, including Old Bristolians, parents and friends throughout the world, inviting everyone to give what they can online through a specially designed platform. Pupils and staff, led by our Heads of House are organising a packed afternoon of activities and competitions which we will share on our BGS Giving Day website and through social media.
WHY IS GIVING DAY IMPORTANT? Encouraging leadership donors to give significant amounts is key to the success of our campaign. Funds raised in this way over the last two years have amounted to over £1million and supported many children.
However, encouraging our wider community and recognising that financial situations may be difficult for an increasing number of people – the cost-of-living crisis, impact of the pandemic and increasing pressure on jobs and security, mean that we only ask for donations you are comfortable with. Joining in. Supporting the children and staff at BGS is really what it’s all about. Giving even a small amount – maybe a regular small amount is enough and with every pound doubled, together we can make a huge difference to the lives of more amazing children.

Donor Stories
Why I give to BGS We are grateful for every donation made to support the 500 Campaign. No gift is too small and every pound is used to support children with Bursary Awards. Leading the campaign and creating a huge impact are a small group of outstandingly generous people who can and who choose to help in a bigger way by providing transformational Bursary Awards. Here we have profiled two such donors from very different backgrounds.
One is a former parent whose daughter benefited from an education at BGS – though she herself never came here. The other is a hugely successful entrepreneur and financial leader who attended BGS for only two years and is now one of our most generous supporters:
Deborah Hubbard Former parent and Sixth Form Sponsor
Deborah was among our very first 500 Campaign sponsors and currently supports an outstanding Bursary Award holder at Sixth Form, who is also one of our three Heads of School.
Why did you agree to become a sponsor? To create a legacy beyond one’s lifetime.
What has your experience been like? The moment Elizabeth and I were officially introduced we connected. She independently sends me updates on what she’s doing. She also invites me to events that she is performing in.
How do you feel about the work BGS is doing with the 500 Campaign and what impact do you think it is creating? I feel the BGS 500 Campaign is an excellent project nurturing future talent. Behind the campaign is a team of people who dedicate themselves to finding the best students from more disadvantaged backgrounds who will thrive at being given an opportunity to step up and into the BGS arena. The impact for all the bursary award holder students is fundamentally life changing for them and their families.
What would you say to someone considering becoming a donor? To quote Nelson Mandela “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.” Philanthropy is derived from Ancient Greek, meaning “love of humankind” and in my mind there is no better way to show it than donating.
Will you continue to keep in touch with Elizabeth after she has left school? I do hope that Elizabeth will stay in contact. My sponsoring Elizabeth is totally unconditional on my part. As I said to Elizabeth when I first met her “The ability to triumph always begins with you”.

Donor Stories
Simon Turner
OB 1987
Simon is the founder and CEO of Inflexion, a leading private equity firm, which invests in established high growth businesses for a minority or majority stake. He has 30 years’ experience of developing and leading buyouts for growth businesses having started his private equity career in the early 1990s.
When not working, Simon leads his company’s involvement in The Prince’s Trust, is a Trustee of Impetus - The Private Equity Foundation and chair of The Roundhouse. He has skied to the North and South Pole as part of the Antarctic Enterprise, raising over £1million for charity. Simon is one of our biggest leadership donors in the 500 Campaign and his contribution has supported 4 Ukrainian refugees through their education at BGS. He is also leading the BGS 2023 Giving Day as our principal donor.
How important is philanthropy to you and your business? Very. We created a sizable Foundation some years ago which supports an array of terrific charity partners. This is largely focused on young people, but also has a growing environmental focus. The whole organisation really gets involved in helping with decision making but also working with some of the charities as fundraisers, trustees, coaches and more. It’s super rewarding, but also a cornerstone of the Inflexion culture.
What did BGS give you?
What motivates you?
BGS was pivotal for me. Coming into a dynamic Sixth Form environment, I was hugely aware of a different atmosphere and set of possibilities. Fortunately, I was just sentient enough to sense the opportunity to develop and perform and the school helped me grab that opportunity!
We live in an extraordinary time, in an extraordinary world. I love the sense of possibility that brings. There are of course many challenges and many blockers, but in a sense, far fewer than at any other time in human history. That’s terrifically exciting. But I’m also fired up about being able to play a small part working on removing some of the blockers for others. That’s a privilege.
Our Ukrainian story In 2022, we began to work with Bristol City Council to identify and support all refugees who would benefit from an education at BGS.
Funding has been increased with the generosity of one of our leadership donors, Simon Turner, to enable four Ukrainian refuges to begin the journey here with us at BGS. One of these students, an incredible young man, in Year 10, brought a photo message and a plaque to thank BGS for its part in offering help. A personal video message was also sent by the Mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko. The whole school community was deeply touched by this gesture of kindness and goodwill and is grateful to Vitali for sending us his thanks at such a critical time for his country.

Could I sponsor a child at BGS? How much would it cost?
We work in partnership with parents to enable as many children as possible to benefit from an education at BGS. Many struggle increasingly to meet the full amount needed. Though we keep costs to a minimum and compared to many other top independent schools, we are competitive, the sums needed are often out of reach. Most parents struggle to meet all the fees and we offer support for those who need it. For those who need significant support - over 50% - we are increasingly using philanthropic donations to help them.
Sometimes, we need 100% support (or more) for children who simply have no means for entry. More often, however, a high percentage - between 50-95% is required.

Legacies are fundamental in shaping the future of our school. Most of our buildings and facilities were built thanks to the far-sighted generosity of donors, and endowments have enabled us to support children through bursaries, cherishing the memory of those who included BGS in their will.
