15Th annual ProducTIon Sale Sunday, march 5, 2017 . 1:00 Pm
KanSaS Bull develoPmenT . Wamego, KanSaS
The Brand for INTEGRITY - PERFORMANCE - EXCELLENCE Welcome to our fifteenth annual Gold Bullion Bull Production Sale! Our sale will still be held at Kansas Bull Development on the Onaga Road Northeast of Wamego, KS on Sunday, March 5. For the fourth year, we put a brand on the lower right quarter of our bulls of GB. However, we used the old philosophy “The quality goes in before the brand goes on”. This means that we culled some bulls at weaning, some on pedigree, some on performance at Kansas Bull Development, and some on disposition before the brand went on. The auction format is a video auction and no bulls will go thru the ring. The bulls will be available for viewing on Friday afternoon on the 24th in the second farthest Southwest lot at KBD, and in group pens on sale day. The gold Bullion group consists of: Brooks, Marple, Drake, Schaake and two new additions to the group this year, Bodenhausen and Parsons. The weather was mild and dry until mid December when it rained a couple of inches, got extremely muddy, and then froze for several weeks. The bulls gained about what we had targeted on the high roughage ration over a 92 day test. The bulls were very healthy and they look great. Once again, we think we are offering a very good set of bulls. A video of the bulls will be uploaded to our website: www.goldbulliongroup.com We developed the catalog with the bulls listed in sale order to allow you to more easily keep track of the bulls and their corresponding data during the sale. In appreciation for recommending our sale to friends and neighbors, we are offering a $50 cash discount gift to customers whose new referrals purchase a bull. Please let us know if you qualify. All bulls being sold passed a breeding soundness exam, tested negative for PI-BVD, and were vaccinated for Lepto-Vibrio. All SimAngus bulls are non-carriers of Arthrogryposis (Curly Calf Syndrome) and non-carriers of Neuropathic Hydrocephalus (by pedigree or DNA tests). Ultrasound data for carcass traits are included in the catalog as well. Artificial insemination and embryo transfer have been used extensively by the breeders. We are committed to Performance, Excellence, and Integrity. Strength in our collective numbers of years in breeding quality, performance cattle will bring strength to your numbers. Our group brings combined experiences from the show ring, the classroom, the feed yard, retail sales, and research. Thank you for your interest in the Gold Bullion Bull sale. We look forward to seeing you on Sunday, March 5th. Lunch will be complimentary.

Sale Terms and Conditions
All animals sell under the terms and conditions set forth by their representative breed association.
Health/Management
All bulls have received IBR, BVD, P13, BRSV, 7-way blackleg; and at least two rounds of Ivermectin or Dectomax (for internal and external parasites). In addition, the bulls were vaccinated with Spirovac VL5 (new Lepto-Hardjo + four other strains). All bulls were tested for brucellosis, and all bulls tested negative for PI/BVD. The fall bulls will have lower growth and carcass numbers as they were produced on grass until July and then brought along slowly.
Bulls/Fertility Guarantee
All bulls were fertility tested by Vincent Traffas DVM, Manhattan, Kansas, and sell as guaranteed breeders for the first breeding season, through 8-15-17. This guarantee does not include loss due to abuse, neglect, illness and/or acts of God (lightning, flood, etc.). We recommend retesting of bulls before pasture turn out. In the event a bull is not a breeder, he will be replaced or credit will be given on another bull. Note this does not cover death. We strongly recommend death insurance.
Semen Interest
Each owner is retaining1/3 semen interest in all bulls unless otherwise announced. For most commercial programs, this will not interfere with the natural service use of the bull. It means that the breeder may want to arrange with the buyer to collect semen on a bull. Or, in the case that the bull proves to be a superior sire, and the buyer and/or breeder market semen on a bull, the breeder would share in 1/3 of the profit and get semen at cost.

The Value of Performance
Simmental and SimAngus bulls can easily add 30-50 lbs. to weaning weights in British based cowherds, and their progeny will perform well in the feed yard and on the rail if you retain ownership until harvest. In addition, females from Simmental and SimAngus sired calves would make great replacements, especially when the females are Simmental x British crosses. Using current calf prices, a bull that sires an average of 25 calves per year for 4 years and adds 30 lbs. average weaning weight per calf at $150/100 lbs. would be worth at least $4,500 more than the price of a bull that adds no additional weight at weaning. You can do the math if they add more weaning weight than 30 lbs. and sell for a higher price than this example. For producers who keep replacement females and retain ownership through the feedlot of all steers and heifers not kept for replacements, the ASA All Purpose Index (API) does a great job of identifying potential value differences among bulls. For example, a bull with an API of 130 would be worth $30 more per calf than a sire with an API of 100. Using these two example API values, if a bull produces 30 calves per year for 4 years, the value difference between these two bulls is $3,600!
Benefits of Crossbreeding
Capitalizing on ’heterosis’ by crossbreeding is a very valuable tool in beef cattle production. Probably the most significant and long term study of heterosis was conducted by the USDA Agricultural Research Service in Nebraska. That study showed that 80 crossbred cows producing crossbred calves are as economical in life cycle production as 100 straight bred cows raising straight bred calves! This 20% bonus in efficiency starts with the increased fertility of crossbred cows, which is followed by increased vigor and hardiness of the newborn calves. Crossbred cows producing crossbred calves wean a higher percentage of calf crop and the calves are heavier. This carries over to increased performance of the calves in the feedlot. Crossbred calves also usually sell for higher prices. In addition to all of these advantages, longevity of crossbred cows is also increased, which means that more heifers can be sold or finished in a feedlot rather than kept for replacements. Using Gold Bullion Simmental and SimAngus bulls on Angus based cows or other British breeds to create Simmental crossbred feeder calves and replacements is a great way to capitalize on heterosis. SimAngus (Angus or Red Angus) crossbred calves and replacement females are second to none as either feeder calves or replacement females! Research at the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center shows that Simmental and Angus breeds rank first or second among Continental and British breeds, respectively, in nearly all traits studied. Using SimAngus bulls (1/2 or 3/4) on SimAngus females capitalizes on approximately 85% of the heterosis obtained from a threebreed rotational crossbreeding program. This is also a very convenient system because a producer does not have to have different pastures for different breeds of bulls. This system also stabilizes a herd at approximately 50% Continental x 50% British breeding. In addition, SimAngus bulls have an advantage in longevity.
Ultrasound Measurements Explained
Fat Thickness - measured at the 12th-13th rib and reported in inches. Most of the fat thickness measurements on these bulls are in a very desirable range; which means they have some fat cover, but are not fat. 2
Ultrasound Measurements Explained
Ribeye Area - measure at the 12th-13th rib and reported in square inches. REA is an important component of the USDA yield grade determinations of beef carcasses. Larger ribeyes result in more desirable yield grade numbers and a higher percent of the carcass as trimmed retail product. Yearling bulls should have at least 1.1 square inchest/100 lb. of live weight, and larger ribeye areas are generally more desirable. However, extremely large ribeyes (> 1.3 square inches/100 lb. of live weight) are not necessarily desirable. %Intramuscular Fat - percentage of Intramuscular Fat, (%IMF) measured in a longitudinal scan of the ribeye muscle from the 11th to the 13th rib. It is a measure of marbling, which is the primary factor that determines USDA quality grade of carcasses. %IMF values for yearling Simmental bulls generally fall in the range of 2.0 to 4.5%. Yield Grade - EPDS for Yield Grade are calculated from ultrasound measurements. YG is the USDA grading system for determining % meat yield differences among carcasses. USDA yield grades are numbered 1-5, with 1 representing a very muscular, trim carcass with a high % meat yield; and a 5 representing a very fat, light-muscled carcass with a low % meat yield. Yield grades can be calculated to the nearest 10th, such as 2.5, 3.9, etc. The average range for Simmental sired progeny would be about 2.2-2.8.
EPDs - values above or below breed average CE
BW WW YW MCE MM MW CW YG MB BF REA API TI
Calving Ease - % unassisted births from two-year old heifers. Example: For a CE EPD of 15, one would expect 10% more unassisted births than for a bull with an EPD of 5. Birth Weight - pounds of birth weight Weaning Weight - pounds of weaning weight due to growth. Yearling Weight - pounds of yearling weight due to growth. Maternal CE - % unassisted births from calving daughters. Maternal Milk - pounds of weaning weight due to dam’s milk. Maternal WW - pounds of weaning weight due to dam’s milk and growth. Carcass Weight - pounds of carcass weight. Yield Grade - tenths of a yield grade. Marbling - percent of marbling score or %IMF Back Fat or Rib Fat - inches of carcass back fat thickness. Ribeye Area - square inches of ribeye All Purpose Index - $ per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario. Terminal Index - $ per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario.

Testimonial
3151404
“We started using Simmental influenced bulls from the Gold Bullion Group in 2010. Since then we have seen an increase in weaning weights as well as a major improvement in average daily gain when those calves are placed on feed. This has allowed us to sell our calves 30 days sooner, making us more efficent. Another key to this is that we are very strict on sticking to a 60 day calving interval and the bulls we have purchased have allowed us to achieve this due to their great durability and semen production. The biggest benefit may be the daughters we have retained as they are starting to enter their prime years of production and they rival their AI contemporaries. We use Gold Bullion sires for all the reasons about but maybe most importantly we like the amount of thought and detail that go into each mating, its more than just matching numbers on paper.”

His weaning and yearling performance is exceptional and he has some additional frame that could sure send some heavy calves across the scale. His sire has become one of the most popular bulls of the breed. What makes this bull unique besides his growth are the excellent scan figures for marbling and ribeye area. We selected SFI Masterpiece as a member of the pen that was fed for the National Western. He was a little younger, and more moderate in frame so we did not dress him for the show. Probably should have because not many bulls in the yard could match his growth, muscle and huge ribeye figure. He was out of a first calf heifer and his grand dam is a perfect cow. So whether your needs are terminal or keeping back replacements it does not matter here because this bull could do it all.

He has left us with good functional cattle that are similar in type and kind. I think you will find that these three full brothers are just like peas in a pod. So much so that I couldn’t decide which one I liked best so I just weighed them up for the sale order. There sister was a highlight in the Heritage Sale going to Mid-Am Genetics as a future breeding piece for them. We are excited about what we think these Royal Affair sons can do. They are the commercial man’s kind, deep, stout and thick made. You can decide which one you like best. We don’t think you can go wrong with any of the three.

The Gold Bullion Consignors The Marple’s have been involved with Simmental cattle for the better part of 40 years. Troy grew up in a Simmental family which is still operating in S.E. Kansas today. Nicole has been the secretary for K.S.A. for several years. Logan & Laney are actively involved in K.J.S.A. Marple Farms was established in 2006 and has grown steadily ever since. We utilize a program that consists of 100% AI & embryo transfer. Our breeding program is based on some basic fundamentals. We always select for Calving Ease, Growth, Maternal and Carcass Traits. We won’t sacrifice one for another and we refuse to chase the extremes. We are always going to place selection pressure on disposition, structural integrity and phenotype.

Ryan, Kayla & Brinley Bodenhausen
Mid-Am Genetics was started in 2008 with the purchase of 2 Simmental and 2 Angus heifers. Founded by Ryan and Kayla Bodenhausen near Muscotah, KS, our herd now consists of around 60 Registered and Commercial Simmental and SimAngus cows. Ryan and Kayla both grew up raising and showing livestock and remain actively involve in the livestock industry on a daily basis as Ryan is employed by Southeast Select Sires and Kayla is an Ag Instructor at USD 377. Our breeding philosophy revolves around 3 major principles, Production, Performance, and Phenotype. We strive to raise cattle that are versatile and can thrive in all operations with those three principles in mind. We are a self-sufficient operation, so cattle are culled/selected for disposition and longevity as well.
Parsons Livestock started building a Simmental program in 2004 when Garrett purchased his first purebred cow while in graduate school. Garrett, Marka and Pate have utilized an extensive embryo transfer and artificial insemination protocol designed around a few extraordinary females to grow the cow herd. Our focus has been on producing phenotypically and genetically superior cattle that display structural excellence, functionality, while optimizing the important production traits of calving ease, growth, carcass merit, and fleshing ability. A strong emphasis is always placed on disposition; only easy to handle cattle will be retained and marketed.
