Summer Time Water Quality Water is the most taken-for-granted nutrient of the six nutrients (protein, fat, carbohydrate, vitamins, minerals, water). It is, also, the most important. An animal can lose all its body fat and one half its body protein, and survive. If an animal loses more than 10% of its body water it will die. Restrict water intake and the animal will automatically restrict feed intake and decrease performance whether it is weight gain, milk production or activity. Some other facts regarding water include: 1. it takes 40 grams of water to excrete 1 gram of mineral. 2. it takes 12 grams of water to excrete the nitrogenous production from one gram of protein intake. 3. urea (in this case, a body metabolite of protein metabolism) cannot exceed 2.6% of the urine volume. 4. it takes 60 grams of water to dissipate the heat produced during the metabolism of 100 kcal of energy intake. 5. an animal has four sources of water [free (drinking) water, bound water (water collided with protein), water included as part of the feed and metabolic water]. 6. metabolic water is the water produced from the metabolism of feed. 7. feeds high in fat yield the most metabolic water per unit weight. 8. feeds high in carbohydrate yield the most metabolic water per kcal of energy intake. 9. while producing metabolic water fat, carbohydrate and protein also require water to dissipate the heat produced during metabolism. Subtracting the water produced during metabolism from the water required to dissipate the heat of metabolism, carbohydrate requires less water intake than fat or protein. Protein requires the greatest net water consumption because every 100 grams of protein intake produces 32 grams of urea and urea cannot exceed 2.6% of the urine volume. The water concentration of body cells is higher in younger animals than in older animals. Growing animals require a higher percentage water intake than older animals in a maintenance mode. Older, larger animals require more daily water intake than younger, smaller animals. Lactating animals and pregnant animals require more water intake than non-lactating and non-pregnant animals. Water has five primary functions within the body. It serves as a dispersion medium for foods within the digestive tract and for metabolic products during metabolism. Water helps to regulate body temperature. Water has the highest specific heat (capacity of a substance to hold heat) of any liquid (1 gram calorie compared to ½ gram calorie for other liquids). Water is important as a transportation medium for nutrients and metabolic products. Water facilitates enzymatic reactions, aids in the transfer of sound waves in the ear for hearing, plays a role for vision in the eye, lubricates joints such as synovial fluid and cushions and protects bones such as cerebrospinal

fluid. In calculating water balance for an animal the positive factors are drinking water, water contained in feeds and metabolic water. Here is an “aside” comment I always share with students in nutrition class to help them remember the facts. The problem I encounter, though, is the students remember the example but not the facts. “A 12 oz can of beer contain 125 cal of energy (the equivalent energy of one average size potato), 90.2% water, 0.6% protein, 4.4% carbohydrate, no fat and 0.2% mineral content. While beer is low in percent protein if one consumes enough beer to meet ones daily energy requirement, the protein and water requirement will be met. However, beer is low in essential vitamins, especially thiamin and a diet of beer will result in major vitamin deficiencies. In addition, beer is a toxin destroying brain cells and most college students need all the brain cells they can keep! The negative factors (water losses for calculating water balance include environmental temperature, physiological function, species, physical activity, state health and pharmaceutical treatment, and nervous condition of the animal. The practical implications of these facts are many. Animals on higher protein diets require more water intake. Show animals consuming higher protein diets and offered water by bucket should be offered more water. Animals fed higher dietary inclusion levels of distillers grains (26 – 30% crude protein) will require more water. Animals consuming diets containing added fat will require more water. When provided a choice, animals always drink after they eat. Show animals offered water by bucket should be watered after they are fed. On hot days, they may drink a little water prior to eating, but they will always drink after eating. Animals will drink more water if the water temperature is between 40°F and 70°F. Therefore, it is best to locate water fountains or water tanks in the shade (in the barn as opposed to outside in an open lot). The sunlight will raise water temperature during the summer to temperatures above 70°F, resulting in lower water consumption and decreased feed intake. During the cold winter months animals at a show offered water from a cold hydrant will drink more water if the water is warmed with a bucket heater. Water consumption is as important in very cold weather as it is in very hot weather. We remember to provide animals with ample water during hot weather to help them dissipate heat and associated body water loss but during cold weather animals require as much water as they do in hot weather because in cold weather protein metabolism increases as animals strive to maintain body temperature by increasing heat production. Consequently, nitrogen loss increases resulting in greater urea production and increased urine output. Animals on medication (such as cortisone) often have increased protein metabolism and therefore higher water requirements. Limitations on water intake depress animal performance quicker and more drastically than any other nutrient deficiency. Providing adequate, clean water of acceptable temperature is essential to animal performance. t h e s h o w c i r c u i t . c o m June/July 2009

Alternative Investments Change Your Perception of Hedge Funds and Private Equity Reports about hedge funds and private equity often paint these investment vehicles as shad¬owy agents of the financial world, when, in fact, both are well established investment options that may be right for qualified investors. Both hedge funds and private equity funds are pooled invest¬ment vehicles designed to serve high-net worth and institu¬tional investors. Hedge funds, which may be concentrated portfolios of both private and public securities, can invest borrowed assets (known as “leverage”). They may hold short positions, which allow the funds to profit when a security declines in value, as well as traditional long positions. Hedge funds often seek to generate a specific absolute return based on the level of risk they assume, regardless of the market environment—a key point of difference from most mutual funds. Hedge funds employ a variety of investment strategies, but in general have the potential to generate enhanced risk-adjust¬ed returns. “The popular perception that all hedge funds are high-risk, high-return investments is misguided,” says Susan Wilson-Perez, Head of Alternative Investments for Citi Global Wealth Management. Additionally, most hedge funds have low correlation to the broad markets, potentially enhancing portfolio diversification. Private equity funds, meanwhile, generally use pooled funds to purchase companies. The managers then typically seek to improve the companies’ infrastructure and overall prospects before selling the company, or the interest in the company, at a profit to other corporations or to the public through initial public offerings (IPOs). Managers at private equity firms have several advantages. Private equity firms usually have a great deal of access to company information. Once they have invest-

ed in a compa¬ny, the managers may also have substantial control through a presence on their corporate board, for example. Private equity firms also have access to executive level expertise, so they may be able to improve company performance signifi¬cantly. And, unlike managers of public companies, private equity firms rarely face market pressure to generate short-term results, giving them the freedom to take a long-term perspective. These advantages have helped private equity funds outperform public equity markets over time.1 And, like hedge funds, private equity investments tend to be uncorre¬lated to the public markets, potentially providing diversifica¬tion benefits to a broad portfolio. Investors considering hedge funds or private equity should be aware of some of their limitations. Investors by law must meet rigorous income and/or net worth, as well as, invest¬ment assets requirements to participate. Hedge funds may limit the times that investors can withdraw capital, while pri¬vate equity funds only distribute investment returns when they earn them, which usually happens around the fourth or fifth year, for a total of seven to 12 years for an entire fund. And, both strategies may charge substantial fees. In Vitro Fertilization Equips Livestock Breeders with Unique Opportunities Historically, in vitro fertilization (IVF) has been reserved as the last opportunity for old, poor producing donors before they are written off and shipped to the cull market. IVF donor yards were often littered with overweight celebrity donors of the past enjoying retirement while their final contributions to the genetic pool were made. Today, some of the hottest genetics and rising stars of the show cattle industry are turning to IVF as more than just a last resort. Why the shift? In two words: efficiency and opportunity. Over the past five years, IVF programs have grown tremendously and seen the number of pregnancies created per collection soar. “By identifying critical control points in the production process and state of the art upgrades in the technology used, huge strides in efficiency have been made,” explains Dr. Matt Bartlett, DVM at Trans Ova Genetics. “A 14 day collection cycle in IVF allows 2-3 collections in the time that one collection could be made in conventional embryo transfer.” With these advances, a donor becomes a powerful genetic machine that can create pregnancies at a rate that is unparalleled to anything else on the reproductive market today. New opportunities within the IVF process are part of the stimulation behind the growth in IVF programs within many parts of the cattle industry. Now, a breeder’s pregnant donor female can be collected in an IVF program from 40 to 100 days of gestation with no adverse effects on the fetus. This procedure is becoming more common and allows breeders to maximize the efficiency of their donor females. Embryo production while a female is growing the next calf crop is another way breeders can put their females to work for their breeding program. “We are proud to offer both custom collected sorted semen and reverse sorted semen that can be utilized on IVF donors,” says Dr. Bartlett. “This allows breeders to create gender selected offspring from today’s up and coming sires and the legends of the past.” Show cattle breeders can now take advantage of using reverse sorted semen from the lab to create embryos that can then be shipped back to their farms for transfer into their own recipients. May brings green grass, beautiful flowers, large trees with an abundance of shade, planting is in full swing and nearing completion, while the wheat fields begin to turn gold for the upcoming harvest. We, as ag people, many times forget all the great things we enjoy at no cost just simply because we live and work in the atmosphere where the baby calves are running in the fresh grass every morning and spend long afternoons lying in the shade of the magnificent trees that nature has provided for us to enjoy. As this time in upon us, most of our beef expos are over, entries have been sent to several of the junior nationals and the balance are due in the coming days. Livestock producer’s nation wide and their p-------spend their summer vacation time hauling and exhibiting their livestock at these events as well as speech, showmanship, fitting and grooming contest, quiz bowls and various other contests. We all look forward from one year to the next for these events that last from four to seven days where we renew friendships and gain new one, friendships that we may only see once a year, but as the years go by, they become some of our closest friends. We as a group of people are a very unique bunch in that our business and our hobbies are the same thing. As a family, we undertake a job that requires many hours of our spare time, as well as a lot of hard work to be successful, yet we all jump in as there was no tomorrow. As we gather at these shows, we meet our old friends from thousands of miles away at the first of the week and as the week goes on, we find out everything that has happened during the past year and enjoy the camarodie of all the contest. As the cattle show begins, everyone is going full speed to get their animals presented in the very best way possible. Looking on you would think everyo9ne is everyone else’s worst enemy, but when the judge has made his decision, it is everyone shaking hands and congratulating their friends as they leave the show ring. Nowhere else can you see a group of people so dedicated to promoting their way of life and their livelihood like you can at a livestock show? Then it’s good-by, see you next year and we all return home to continue our lives and exhibit our livestock at county, district, state and national show. We, as OCCA members, can feel good about ourselves as our organization is just a smaller group of these individuals, yet most of us belong and exhibit at our breed’s national shows. It makes me proud that our young group of exhibitors are some of the top showman, with the best livestock, top speakers, judges, fitters, national directors and officers of any state is the United States. Our OCCA schedule has the OCA Preview show the first week of June, before junior nationals begin and then our late summer jackpot afterwards, so if you have not paid your membership current, do so today and get involved in one of the very best family orientated organizations available. The point races have just begun, so don’t miss a one and be their for the awards banquet next spring. I would like to wish the best of luck to all of you with your new projects and your spring born babies. We all watch our pastures close to see if that next great one is out there. All your hard work and dedication is showing! August is right around the corner and we could really use your help to make our first award ceremony a success. Let’s all pull together to show the junior exhibitors just how proud of them we are. If you are interested in sponsoring the overall exhibitor or a specific breed award, please contact one the of committee members. Again, our goal is to present the members their awards during the State Fair.
