Site Study

PROJECT BRIEF The North Residential District is one of Ohio State’s three on-campus residential neighborhoods and is the closest to the Academic Core North. The District defines the northern boundary of the campus, an urban edge condition that mediates between existing residential neighborhoods to the north and the collegiate character of the Academic Core North, which lies along the District’s southern edge. The North Residential District Plan will construct space to accommodate 3,875 beds. The total capacity of the District, including new and existing beds, will be 6,359 beds.

DESIGN CONCEPT Three major paths cut through the whole site to separate it into three major parts. The orientation of paths coincides with the OSU campus grid, and the grid of city of Columbus. Three paths starting at the corner of the N. High St. and the Lane Ave., meeting at the southwest corner which pointing to the academic campus. The idea of the whole design complex is striation, so the building facades also follows this idea. In design area, each two buildings form a private courtyard, which serves only residents. To benefit not only residents, but also other OSU students and faculties, there are four commercial stores facing to the N. High Street and a recreation center facing to the Lane Avenue.

Site Study

PROJECT BRIEF This project, meant to accommodate 800 undergraduates at all ranks, is sited on 55th Street and University Ave forming a gateway to campus from the Hyde Park neighborhood to the north. The new Campus North Residence Hall and Dining Commons will provide for eight “house,” the student group clusters of each 100 students with allied amenities at the urban intersection. It is located near the University Smart Museum, Gerald Rather Athletics Center. Also, this site is four blocks north of the Midway Plaisance, a linear urban park that spans one mile from Jackson Park on Lake Michigan at the east end to the Washington Park on the west end.

DESIGN CONCEPT In the whole design complex, the eight towers representing 8 houses as private living space for college students, the bar-shaped building through these towers are campus commons and public spaces. These two systems are connecting with each other, so the residents have direct access to the public spaces such as laundry rooms, libraries and reading rooms. However, the other students who do not live in the dorms cannot get into the towers through the public spaces. The arrangement of towers is like a checkerboard, transferred from the gird of the city of Chicago, moved around to create two different neighborhoods. To respond to the surroundings, façades of towers are in three different materials, concrete, brick and glass.

Public vs. Private

The Central Core

PROJECT BRIEF The program includes roughly half office space and half public outreach and education spaces (a library, an auditorium, and galleries). Founded in 1892, by Jon Muir after successfully campaigning to create Yosemite National Park, the Sierra Club is one of the oldest and largest grass roots environmental organizations in the world. Following the model of this proactive environmental organization, we will consider environmental and ecological issues not as crisis, but as fact, and even as an opportunity.

DESIGN CONCEPT To match the theme of Sierra Club, the total energy use of the building has been considered. Three glass voids inserted in different places of building to create three dimensional open spaces. Depending on the movement of sun, the glass voids brings sunlight into the building. On the south side of building, there are several green terraces open to the city. The reason for the existence of these green spaces is to bring the nature of Mount Adams in to the city of Cincinnati.

Collection: Dinosaur Bones (Installation) Ohio State University Architecture Studio Spring 2013 Instructor: Joseph Twelmeyer

Collection: Dinosaur Bones Design Process

PROJECT BRIEF This project was developed to understand the attributes of materials and to explore the physical spaces. The final requirement was to make a chamber that could be functioning as a storage space for a specific thing.

DESIGN CONCEPT

The objective for this project is to collect dinosaur bones. In the interior of the model, it creates a dark and closed space to provide viewers with a cave-like effect. On the top of the model, there is a skyline to let light in. The waffle-structure was made of wood and came from an idea of a book shelf, in which each cell could be a space to store dinosaur bones. The idea of the interior of the waffle structure came from an organic shape based on a study of the human body. There are several plaster blocks which break views from the inside to the outside spaces, and apertures to create views between the inside and outside.
