STAR LETTER
Hey guys, Its good to see that there is still some life in the magazine industry yet with Q:ID. It was also good to see your stance on bringing in new talent into the writing scene instead of using the traditional stable of known writers out there. Also loved the fashion section where you introduced us to models who were not traditionally professionals on the modeling circuit and gave them a chance. Overall a really good first issue and can’t wait for the next installment. You guys have a brilliant grasp of the use of negative space, OK with a few things you guys till to sort out, but good for a first issue. Also the cover model was a pretty good choice. I TEND TO (SADLY) AGREE..... I have to say that when I read Lorna’s article I frantically started to search, but sadly found very few Lesbians strutting their stuff in the public life, especially in media. There has been a strong male movement when it comes to gay men in the media and the public eye in general. I just don’t think they make such a big song and dance about it. Maybe they should. ALL ABOUT JAKE
I have been a mad fan of Jake Walmsley for way longer than I want to admit. but to see what was a personal interview was quite cool. I most probably should not admit this but have bought than one copy of Q:ID so I could cut out the sections and well frame them. I know a bit sad, but I was amazed to see such an in depth interview. So a bit envious of you guys meeting him. I will now keep my eye on his internet pages for more of his amazing stuff and I do hope you guys re visit him at some point. My god sound like a stalker now. Gary, Ontario - Canada - via Letter

Q:ID Takes a sneak peak into New York’s Show Queen - SHERRY VINE, with some of the best videos on the net. We take a seat with the mistress of NYC and bask in her glory.
T
here is nothing more amazing than someone who can make us laugh, cry, giggle, jump in the air and all that is just foreplay to Sherry Vine, one of NYC’s most talented performers. I am in awe as interview one of the greats. So when did Sherry Vine first put on her sparking shows and performed for the first time on stage? Sherry Vine first appeared on stage in Los Angeles in 1992 (yes, I was 5 at the time!). I performed at a club called Trade with Jackie Beat. My first paid appearance as Sherry was from the legendary Chi Chi LaRue for the premiere of Paris Is Burning. My first paid gig for Sherry performing was for an event called Queer Nation. Did you always want to be a performer? I have only ever anted to be a performer and started acting classes when i was 10 years old. There was never even a moment of wanting to do anything else. Of course, I didn’t imagine it to be in heels and a wig, lol, but that’s the path I ended up on and have never looked back. I love my life! Who have been your idols in shaping your career? I’ve had many idols at many different times. Obviously, Pamela Anderson - people always get us confused. Debbie Harry, Pat Benatar, Jenna Jameson - strong women who aren’t afraid to be sexual. But my biggest comedic influence is Carol Burnett! I love actors who are physical and zany! The Lady GaGa parody’s are amazing, where do you get the ideas for them all? I’ve been doing parodies of pop songs for 15 years and they just poop, I mean, pop into my head. Some of my videos have nothing to do with the originals but the Lady GaGa ones were just begging to be parodied. Don’t get me wrong, I adore Lady GaGa - I think she is truly worthy of being called a pop star!! I’m not making fun of her (so stop the hate mail already!). And I know that she has a sense of humor and likes the videos. What is a typical day in the life of Sherry Vine? A typical day in the life of Sherry Vine: get bailed out of jail, find my way home, jack hammer the 5 inches of make up off my face, feed the python, crawl into my sarcophagus and sleep until it’s dark out, wake up, reapply the 5 inches of make up, hit the street, get arrested (repeat). OR. wake
up, yoga class, run errands, lunch with Joey Arias, rehearse/write new material, throw on the touch of lip gloss I need for the evening, hit the stage in some city I happen to be performing in. Actually, a combination of the two sounds more fun! IF we were taking a trip to NYC where would you recommend visit? There’s so much to do in NYC! The nightlife is not as exciting as it was in the 1990’s but it is making a strong comeback. One of my fav parties here is the F Word. Michael Formika Jones knows how to throw a party! Of course, my show every Sunday at Barracuda or Monday at Vig 27. There’s theatre, museums, gorgeous parks, gay bath house (NOT that I have been there!!), shopping, etc. The UK is still virginal to your touch, is it somewhere you’d like to perform? I honestly can’t believe I haven’t performed in London. For an International Prostitute who travels all over the world it’s crazy. I MUST get there to do a show. I would LOVE it!! I’ll sing for fish and chips! Are you excited about the new Lady GaGa album - and have you been given a sneak peek? I’ve only heard You & I from the new GaGa record. I can’t wait!!! I have pen in hand ready to write some new songs about poo and penis! lol In your most recent video “You’re a Homo” looks like it was fun to make surrounded by all those fit men, but how long did it take to make? We shot the You’re A Homo video in one afternoon, a few hours. It was crazy but so fun. All the naked boys - I was in heaven! lol. Really, everyone was so professional and fun we had a blast. Lots of giggling and cutting up! Any new projects coming up that we have to follow? I’m working on several new projects. One is a webisode called The Flames of Hell’s Kitchen, a gay soap opera. We are shooting several episodes this month and it will premiere in September so check out my website. Of course, getting ready for the new GaGa and Britney records. I’m travelling all over the place, booked until Christmas, so check the site for dates. You can see all my videos, uncensored, and my blog, dates, etc at www.SherryVine.com 9

There is a beauty to the B&W Zeppelin design, the strong, defined but sensitive curves to the speaker unit to the brushed steel ipod holder. This is a piece that fits into near enough any contemporary surrounding, but also subtle enough to fit into the most traditional setting too. Music is the worlds most common language, its one that you dont need to understand to enjoy its beauty, the Zeppelin brings that experience closer than any other system. Step by step guide to achieve the perfect shoe shine Cherry Blossom Premium’s step by step guide to achieve the perfect shoe shine. First impressions are lasting impressions and shoes are always the first please you start. So this season put your best foot forward and make sure you are doing it right. Task: Shoe shining What you’ll need: Clean cloths, Soft haired shoe brush, Cherry Blossom Premium’s new ‘Universal cleaner’ and ‘leather cream’. Task time: 10 minutes 1.It is most important that you start with perfectly clean shoes. Do this buy wiping the shoes with damp cloth, then spray with Cherry Blossom Premium’s new ‘Universal cleaner’. 2.Shake well, hold upright and spray. Keep the can 10-15cm away from the shoes spray a even amount covering all of the leather. 3.Use a soft cloth or bush to work the foam in to the solid areas. Wait 10 seconds and wipe the dirt away with a clean cloth. 4.Allow the shoes to dry in room temperature. Cherry Blossom were the first and now the only UK manufacturer of shoe polish. Started in 1906 by brothers Dan and Charles Mason, Cherry Blossom polish started from a need to use wasted tin plate left over from making their soap company containers. Today the Cherry Blossom shoecare range is manufactured in Alfreton, Derbyshire, and as the materials used in the manufacturing of shoes have changed to include suede, nubuck, corduras and canvas as well as the traditional leather, so too have the products on offer from Cherry Blossom. 12
5.Take Cherry Blossom Premium leather cream, no need to colour match your cream the new Premium leather cream is suitable for all colours. This nourishes and protects leather. 6.Using the sponge, sparingly spread the cream all over the shoe. Do not squeeze the tube just work the sponge in a circular motion over the entire surface of the shoe. Always make sure you work the Leather cream** into all the crevices and cracks in the leather. **Leather cream works deep into the leather leaving a longer lasting effect. 7.Leave to dry for 3 minutes and buff. 8.Take a traditional soft haired Cherry Blossom shoe brush and buff the shoes in a left-to-right motion to remove any excess polish.
WHY OUR READING
PRIDE
IS DIFFERENT
L
orna McArdle, our community editor, the chairperson of Reading Pride and businesswoman explains why Reading Pride is different. So as always we don’t argue with the award winning chairman of Reading Pride and give her the honoured soap box to tell us all. Why the Pride she has headed for so many years is that little bit different from all the rest and more importantly where it is boldly going where no other prides have gone before. words: Lorna McArdle
14
W
hen Pride began it was really because Reading didn’t have one and there wasn’t much in the area at the time. When we started 7 years ago you could almost pick a weekend and not clash with any other Pride event in the festival calendar but now there is as many as 4 in any weekend up and down the country. Reading Pride are dedicated to making sure they don’t get so big that they loose the message as they do get offers that would totally commercialise the festival and this is a very dangerous ground as the commercialism will over take the message and it will no longer be a community festival but about the highest bided brand. My vision as a chairperson has been to make the Pride event about the community. About giving the LGBT community a voice. Not many Pride events actually promote this very well. When I came out 9 years ago all I knew about was the gay bars. This is not the best place to have issues about your sexuality unless you are already confident about it in the first place. It can be a hostile as well a great place to meet new friends and partners. But I would always recommend that you should go with a friend, I didn’t have that, as I wasn’t 100% committed to the idea and unsure. (Even if my friends tell me they knew all along). So this is why we have given our Pride Event a focus and to make sure the message gets out there that if you are questioning your sexuality then this is a great place to start. This year’s focus is about the family unit as there are loads of same sex families without a network. The families seem to get missed when we talk about being gay. Nearly all my friends have family, so it’s time to show that and reflect that with the festival too. It can’t be easy to be a sibling to a gay parent neither would it be easy for the parent to help your child when the bullying can start for your child. Reading Pride wants to start a network so that siblings and parents can talk about the problems they encounter and be a support network for each other. Reading Pride wants to bring out all individual needs of people and get them to meet up. But Reading Pride isn’t all about that, it is also about but being yourself and if you find yourself wondering what all the fuss is about and why do we need a pride event like this, then ask yourself, how often do you see gay couples holding hands or
showing affection in public probably not very often. We want to open the doors so we as a group can feel comfortable in public with our partners. Which is why we encourage everyone to come to our festival, as it’s the only one that won’t discriminate as long as you accept that not everyone is like you. We are championing this year Family Picnic groups Stamping out Homophobia in football Getting an LGBT Centre in Reading to house all the groups together so that we can be found and no longer hidden. Plus the other missing links in the area, a 20-25 group as there is nothing in our community for people who go past 19 years old and younger than 50 years old. We will be starting an on-line networking group that will be encompassing all groups, including gender, sexuality, age and life styles plus their interests. This year we welcome Diane Abbott MP as our appointed Patron Reading Pride is proud to announce that it has appointed Diane Abbott MP as its first Patron. Diane Abbott who has been an MP since 1987 with a special interest in equality and diversity, having had a career within workers unions before that. In a statement issued by Diane Abbott she states, “I am absolutely thrilled to have been offered the opportunity to become a Patron of Reading Pride. So many towns and cities across the country see local pride events as an important part of their summer calendar - I hope that the next few years brings us greater equality – gay marriage, greater protection for trans people, blood service reform and gay families being seen as equal and important as heterosexual families. And I hope that by working with Reading Pride we can do our bit to make this a reality.” Reading Pride is proud to appoint Diane Abbott as a Patron, especially one who has been campaigning since the 80’s not only for equality amongst issues involving sexuality but equality for the entire community. We hope to work together to form a stronger community presence, both locally and nationally on issues which can change the lives of the many. 15

here are some restaurants that define themselves on their menu’s. There are some that define themselves on their location and there are some that define themselves on the exquisite service which they offer their clients. Skylon, goes one step further, but not only defining themselves on all of the above but also defining themselves as an entire package. We take a dinner at Skylon before a show and discover that within the Southbank complex there lies an amazing treasure. That treaure is, SKYLON. http://www. SkylonRestaurant.co.uk

here is an opulence to this restaurant that sets it aside from its peers, and without a doubt has been one of the few restaurants that has set itself with a high standard of service and food in our opinion. From the moment we arrived at Skylon before a show we were greeted with the possible some of the best service we have ever encountered. With uber-polite staff at the door to being seated at our table, it was less than a normal ushering but more being swept off our feet and seated at our table. The staff were more than just polite, there was an air of knowing what we wanted, and comfortable formality to this part of the restaurant. Rest assured we had come out to relax and everyone made us so
welcome and to coin a better word, relaxed. The menu was filled with a variety of dishes catering to all our tastes from vegetarian to a wide selection of meat dishes. The wine list was phenomenal and after ordering most probably the best rose wine we have ever ordered, we were treated to an amazing meal. Our surroundings were gorgeously modern and for the near two hours we stayed we felt that we had left the busy Southbank streets and were transported to a different place. A thoroughly enjoyable meal. And for an extra treat, filled with the smartest and cutest staff we have ever encountered. A must go if you live or are visiting London. Q:ID Awards: 5 Stars

BOYBANNEDINTERVIEW>>>
LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT... T
here is something incredibly exciting about a new boyband when you get to hear them for the first time, but its even more exciting when the boyband bring something very new to the music scene. Q:ID meets BOYBANNED, the newest addition to the music scene and asks a few probing questions.
Ethan: It’s been really good seeing some familiar faces in the crowd, and it’s good as well because obviously this is where I am a lot so it means a little bit more that we’ve managed to perform here as a band and got to see everyone.
You’ve just had one of your first big UK performances, and it’s also your debut Ethan. It’s been your first performance with the band, how has it been for you?
Pob: Musically? Oh God! Put me on the spot here... ummm. I quite like a lot of catchy music. All the cheesy stuff! Back from like S Club 7 who bring back memories of the childhood.
Ethan: Really good! Really exciting, I mean it’s been such a buzz this weekend. We’ve had a really good time, it’s been such a good laugh. Really enjoyed it!
And I hear Darrin that you’ve got quite an acquired music taste haven’t you?
So how has it been performing in your home town?
22
We’ve got all the members here, and you all bring something different to the band yourselves, what would you say your influences are? Your idols?
Darrin: Yeah I like quite a lot of different stuff like Prince...and a lot of African stuff as I’m from South Africa.
So you all obviously spend a lot of time together being a band and you practice a lot together. Does anyone get on your nerves? Are there any tiffs? Pob: Actually to be honest, we were saying this last night, Ethan and I after the gig, that the bunch of us get on so well. I know it just sounds like we are saying that, but actually you couldn’t ask for a better bunch of guys really to work with. It’s been really good. It’s been your first big UK gig but you’ve travelled a lot already. What’s been your favourite performance so far? Ethan: I really enjoyed the Southampton gig which was really good fun. Just because the crowd were so responsive there. It’s really nice when people appreciate your music and join in, so for me that’s probably been the favourite.
would you like to perform? Ethan: Well to be honest, probably along the same lines of Pob. To do the Manchester Evening News arena would great, a bigger venue would be really good. I’d like to do that. Darrin: I think it would be great to do some more London gigs, and also to perform in Cape Town in South Africa where I was born. So guys, be honest, who is the messiest out of you lot? Pob: I’d say Darrin. Darrin: No! No! Pob: He’s getting very, very defensive! You’ve been brilliant today. Just for the record, it is Darrin, David, Ethan and Pob of Boy Banned. Have you got a message for your fans out there?
David: Umm...oooh...it’s a tough call! I agree with Ethan actually that Southampton was really nice. It was a more intimate gig, but everyone was really responsive. But also I think our Berlin premiere was amazing because we had the whole weekend and it was the first time we did everything. Although we didn’t have Ethan unfortunately! But we do now! So maybe we can go back to Berlin and that will be great.
Pob: Thank you so much for all the support on Twitter and Facebook. This week has been amazing.
So you’ve had a busy weekend. You did Southampton yesterday and Manchester today so I’m sure you’re very tired. You’ve just come off stage and I’ve been walking around with my lovely “Banned” t-shirt. I’ve had people asking me “where can I get one?”
Darrin: Keep up to date with us on Facebook and Twitter and we will hopefully be touring around the rest of the UK soon!

Say goodbye! All: Bye!
Where do you think you would love to perform? Anywhere in the world. Anywhere! Pob: Obviously there’s the massive arenas. Doing a big arena tour would be amazing. But there are some places close to our hearts that we’d love to perform, like our hometowns. I’d love to go back to my hometown of Cheltenham and see all my friends and do a gig for them. That would be good. Ethan, you’ve just done your hometown, where 23

Who needs pride anyway? M
aybe “need” is the wrong word, but as we have entered pride season, it is a question I sometimes find myself asking. Things might not be truly equal, in every sense of the word, but they are far better than they have ever been. Civil partnerships, gay adoption, many work places offering benefits to partners irrespective of sex, it is probably fair to say that here in the UK we are fortunate to have made great strides towards equality in recent times. Over 10 years ago now, I remember London Mardi Gras and marching past Whitehall chanting “Tony Blair - We won’t wait - repeal section 28!” and of course it was. So why are we holding prides now, is it just an excuse for a party, or is it reinforcing acceptance in wider society, or is it something else? I was pondering these things a while ago, when I observed something which gave me a greater insight, and made me look a bit deeper at where we still need to go. In my apartment block, is a Black family, I don’t know them well, but enough to exchange nods and the occasional hello if we pass in the corridor. Of the three children that make up the family, I would say the eldest son is about 12 or 13 year of age, and I shall call him by the fictional name of Andrew for ease of reference. Now Andrew often plays football outside the block with his friends, although they really don’t disturb me. They just seem the sporty types, always in sports gear and seen with tennis rackets and the like on these fleeting corridor passings. So nice family, keep themselves to themselves and would seem fairly representative of a modern British family. I leave the apartment at varying times in the morning depending on the locations of the appointments I have that day. It is therefore, fair to say I don’t have a regular routine and do not see the same people each day as they go about their daily lives. One morning I left earlier than normal for an appointment on the other side of town. On this particular morning, I noticed that Andrew was walking down the road ahead of me, and I didn’t really pay him that much attention, especially as he disappeared from my sight as he turned right up ahead. When I reached the end of the road, I also turned right, and I noticed that Andrew had met up with another lad, maybe a year or two older, and what happened next did surprise me - they kissed each other on the lips, and held hands as they continued to walk off down the road. The things turned a bit sour. You see as I was following, I had stepped on a twig, it made a crunching sound, and I didn’t think much of it. However, the
26
lads up front immediately pulled their hands apart and they looked behind themselves right at me. Now I am an openly gay man and make secret of it, so as Andrew smiled at me (and of course I smiled back) he then whispered into his friends ear, he reached down and grabbed his hand again, and they continued walking down the road hand in hand. This was one of those moments where I realised that society still isn’t really that equal at all. If Andrew had met a girl, and was holding her hand, do you think he would have pulled his hand away so quickly in fear? A week or so later I was in a coffee shop while waiting for a friend. I noticed a young straight couple making out, and they looked like they were eating each other, rather than their blueberry muffins. No-one batted an eye-lid and they carried on slurping each other for what seemed like an uncomfortable eternity. I wonder what would have happened if it had been Andrew and his friend locking lips, whether they would have experienced the same ambivalence. I am not that bothered about public displays of affection, especially as I often see the people doing it as making a point to an audience rather than the fact the two people concerned are so in love they can’t go another second without tasting each other. So if people want to do it, it doesn’t bother me provided the time and place is right. So if you are practically inside each other and holding up the supermarket check-out queue, then I’ll probably be asking you to be careful not to catch something in the conveyor belt and get a move on, especially if Eastenders is on. The fact is though, this is a given for straight people, if they want to kiss, and setting is right, they will get left alone, but this is not the same for gay men. There may be places where gay men do feel more comfortable being openly romantic, but most of the time I think this is shied away from. Another issue which is rarely talked about is the Football Association and the tackling of homophobia. Since the suicide of Justin Fashanu in 1998, I don’t recall any openly gay premier league professional footballers. To me, 12 years seems a rather long time. Now, the FA support a football team called the Justin Fashanu All Stars in Brighton amongst other things, but “support” and “tackling” are two very different things. In fact, on contacting the FA, with regards to tackling homophobia it is still met with some resistance, and the fact their spokesperson has not been adequately equipped to make an impact on this issue, some might say that the FA isn’t really trying very hard at all, but are going through the motions to keep people happy. Globally, things are still a bit tense, with the recent imprisonment of Steven Monjeza and Tiwonge Chimbalanga in Malawi, who were sentenced to 14 years hard labour after they announced their engagement. They were later given a pardon by the head of state, but I am sure the international attention this case received helped in achieving this outcome. Even in my home county there was the recent homophobic
incident involving a gay couple (Michael Black and John Morgan) who tried to check into a guest house in Cookham in Berkshire, only to be told that they were not welcome because they were gay. The couple plan to sue the guest house, and if they win, have stated that they will give the money to charity. Even so, given that legality of a civil partnerships and equality laws in place in this country, people still believe that being gay is wrong. It would also seem that no amount of laws or reasoning would ever change their mind. In fact Pope Benedict XVI criticised the UK’s legislation because it created “limitations on the freedom of religious communities to act in accordance with their beliefs”. It is thought his comments relate to laws that came in last year preventing adoption agencies from discriminating against gay couples. So while I am no fan of the pope, I find him pretty ineffectual and in my opinion, is of no great important to Britain as a whole. Now moving on from this outdated relic, you can step up a gear into even more bizarre territory with the Phelps family. The family from Westboro in the US are comical with respect to their views. Not only do they believe that “God Hates Fags” but they will also picket anything. For pure entertainment value I checked their picket schedule and found that they had plans to picket Lady Ga Ga concerts, because apparently God hates her too! I might add that even more gratifying is the letter they uploaded from the Home Office which stated they are not allowed to enter the UK, on the grounds that their presence would not be conducive to the public good. I guess what I am really saying is that you are always going to get extremes of views, and provided that the centre of these extremes results in equality and acceptance for gay men then this should be our ultimate goal. As I have established, we are not at the centre yet, we still have a short way to go, but thinking about how tackle everyday situations we can all be part of the collective effort, if we want to be. So maybe there is a real part for prides to play in helping changing the things that still need to be changed. After all, if it wasn’t for people who stood up for their rights, such as those in the Stonewall riots or Peter Tatchell, we probably wouldn’t be enjoying the freedoms that we currently enjoy today. The first gay pride march took place in Los Angeles on 28 June 1970 to commemorate the anniversary of the stonewall riots. As we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the first gay pride have a think about how to apply that little extra pressure to help those less fortunate than us, as a way of saying thankyou to those who fought on our behalf in the past. When you can hold your partners hand in public and no-one even looks twice, the world over, then our work is done.

A
belief in equality is one of the founding principles of the Labour movement. Trade unions and the Labour Party were set up precisely to bring about fairness and more equality as between people and communities. The right to vote is one thing, but to have anything approaching genuine equality in society, people have to organise together and work together, to bring about change. It is precisely this reason why I’m a member of the Labour Party and why I’m a former trade union official. I know Party politics and Trade Unions are often seen as a bit old fashioned, but the great strides forward for equality, particularly LGBT equality, have only come about because of these things and the people that organise inside them. In the nineteen nineties I was an equalities officer for the ACTT, a film technicians union which has since merged with BECTU. I worked, not just with lay equalities officers in my union but with equality officials in a range of other unions. Doing that job I learnt how crucial the role of trade unions is in ensuring equality in the workplace, I saw the discrimination being faced by LGBT workers and fought for them at tribunals. I saw employers resisting changes to legislation that would stop LGBT people being sacked solely on the basis of their sexuality. And I worked, with others, to ensure the implementation of practical policies that will give workers genuine fairness and equality. We shouldn’t forget the all the legislation outlawing homophobia and discrimination came from the Labour Party, and was opposed by the Tories. The scrapping of section 28, civil partnerships, the equality bill, workplace legislation, gay adoption – all bills proposed by the Labour government, all bills that I’m pleased to have voted for and argued for. And it wasn’t easy - at every turn Conservative voices in politics and in the press opposed many of these measures. Even the general public didn’t support civil partnerships when Labour proposed them, but we did
it anyway – because it was the right thing to do. It was Labour that made these things centrist issues, Labour who is to thank for the Conservatives new found love for all things LGBT. So I am proud to say that equality is at the heart of my campaign for the Labour leadership. I was the first candidate to call for Gay Marriage, way back when we were still fighting for civil partnerships. I am the only candidate that spoke out vociferously when the Islington registrar refused to perform her duties. This idea that you can be ‘excused’ from anti-discrimination legislation because of your faith is nonsense. Faith should never be used to cover up for prejudice. If you’re performing a public service then you perform it for the benefit of the entire public, without discrimination. New Labour has many magnificent achievements to its credit. In my part of East London they built five new schools and poured millions into my local hospital. But under New Labour we saw the emergence of a political class which was increasingly cut off from ordinary people. The expenses scandal emphasised the sense of a privileged elite. Before I stood in this contest all the candidates were part of a Westminster inner circle. They had all been policy advisors in the Blair years, all socialised together, played football together and had all been parachuted into safe seats. They are very nice and very talented. But I am standing to show that ordinary men and women from a range of backgrounds can dare to aspire to lead our party. I want more black, women, disabled and LGBT people in parliament. Not because we need boxes to be ticked but because there are many battles still to be won. My parents were from rural Jamaica, They both left school at 14 and they would be incredibly proud of the fact that that I am a contestant for one of the highest positions in the land. But they would also be proud of the Labour movement that made it possible. I am grateful for the support I have received, particularly from the LGBT community, as a patron of Reading Pride and a supporter of Black Pride. I know how important many people feel this election is and how worried they are about equality going backwards under the coalition government. I won’t let that happen and as Leader of the Labour Party I will work with you and your communities, to make the streets safer and our communities and schools more tolerant. http://www.diane4leader.co.uk

annon & Ball, Hinge & Bracket and John & Edward are just some of the biggest names in the great pantheon of comedy double acts; but what exactly does it take to be funny? Ever keen to find out Q:ID has caught up with YouTube sensations HimandMe (aka Shea Taylor and Steve Langstaff) just before they perform their live sketches at The Comedy Balloon, in Manchester’s Ape and Apple. Q:ID – So Shea and Steve, you’re celebrity spoof sketches have taken YouTube by storm (Duffy Coke Advert, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Russell Brand), but where exactly did it all begin? Steve – We started off doing student radio whilst at university and that’s when we realised we made each other laugh. So after a while we decided it made more sense to make other people chuckle, so we moved to Manchester to seek our fortunes. Shea – Yeah, but we didn’t think we’d get on at first; with Steve being a lager-lout... Steve – And Shea a camp Dandy. Q:ID – Well you clearly work well together, which must make some of the sketches fun to shoot; but surely they don’t always run smoothly? Shea – No, they can be tricky. The Duffy coke ad was a nightmare (Steve was dressed as Duffy whilst riding a bike) because we normally do stationary shoots, but that one had Steve riding all over the place in tights and I didn’t know where he was going to go.
Steve – I like to keep him on his toes. But yeah, that took three nights to film with me in a blonde wig. I had to find my bicycle pump and everything. Q:ID – So what is it about spoofing that you think works so well? Shea – Everyone can relate to a spoof and as most of our work’s online the best way for people to instantly recognise what we do is to parody well known people. Steve – Plus spoofing also helps to express what irritates or amuses us! Q:ID – You’ve covered some big names in the world of showbiz, but you’ve not spoofed the likes of JLS or Susan Boyle yet. How come? Shea – Well we do like JLS at HimandMe Towers, Steve’s a big fan of Marvin, but let’s be honest they’re just too clean cut. What would we do with them? Steve – As for SuBo, we did come up with some ideas, but she seemed just too much of an easy target, so we decided not to go down that route. Shea – Our spoofs usually have a twist at the end and with SuBo we felt that it would have been just about her, which we didn’t think was fair. We have ideas of what we think would be funny and then usually find a celeb that would fit into the sketch. Q:ID – Well you don’t just stop at celebs, you even spoofed the Queen’s speech. Do you think the Queen is a fan of HimandMe? Steve – Most queens are fans of HimandMe. 47
Just ask about Shea’s followers. Shea – Oh she loved it. We got a letter back from one of her people saying she watched it on her iPhone. She’ll no doubt be following us on Twitter or poking us on Facebook next. Q:ID – Well fans don’t come much bigger than that, so it sounds like you must get recognised all the time then? Shea – Oh yeah. Only the other day we got spotted by the Hollyoaks date rapist. Steve – That was a one off, because I was with Shea; I never get recognised on my own. Shea does, but I must be like a comedy chameleon. I think my car (which appears in their Lady Gaga spoof) will get spotted before me! Q:ID – You’re Lady Gaga spoof has certainly racked up some hits on YouTube. Why do you think that one has been so successful?
Shea – Yeah that’s the thing with the Lady Gaga sketch, if people didn’t like it then they would have just stopped watching, but instead they shared it around. Although it wasn’t our intention it doubled our YouTube subscribers and increased our fans on Facebook. That’s the power of Lady G. Q:ID – Lady Gaga is also one of the sketches you’re performing live. So how come you’re now branching out into the live circuit? Is this the future for HimandMe? Shea – It’s been something we’ve talked about for a while and the Lady Gaga sketch got us a bit of interest from a production company and then we got an agent. Steve – The live performances help us perfect what we do, but we’re still two friends who often dress up as women. That’s always funny. We have things in development, but nothing’s certain...so we just keep going. Shea – Until we’re 90 years old!
Steve – I think it helps that everyone has gone a bit ‘Gaga’ as of late and we knew when we were working on it that she was someone that would be a big YouTube star. So we tried to do something different with her by throwing in a twist halfway through the sketch. Shea – With Gaga, we knew that there would be a lot of American spoofs, so we wanted to inject a bit of British humour, which is why we introduced Gaga’s dad. Steve – It seemed to work because we’ve had some really good feedback and people have passed the sketch onto their friends. 48
Steve – I’ll be dead by then.

words: Kraig Harris
Our hopeless romantic Kraig Harris has once again been busy in his kitchen experiment new flavours and creations to tantalise and possibly stimulate his blind date that we at Q:ID have set him up on. Let’s just hope he is on his best behaviour this time and stick to just a glass or two of wine!
// CHAPTER TWO BLIND DATES, EMBARRASSMENT AND HAMSTER PANTS!
Tall, dark and handsome… That was all I was told about David, the blind date my good friend had asked to set me up on. I didn’t know if I should be thrilled about the excitement of tall dark and handsome or look beyond the actual words - after all Frankenstein is tall, with a dark aura and ended up with his bride who must have found him attractive… Humm, at least there is hope out there for us all, if these lost souls found love then what’s stopping David and myself? The more I thought about it the more I realised that I had never actually been on a blind date, yeah I have had the occasional date with someone I met online, but when you think about it online dating is almost like ordering a take away pizza -you’re not going to order topping that you’re not interested in or even ask the pizza place to just randomly pick something out for you but in this case a friend did it for me. I just decided to keep myself busy up until meeting David, so my mind wouldn’t give rise to gloomy thoughts about backing out, after all David might not be my cup of tea relationship wise however could turn out to be a really good friend. Personally I am a firm believer of taking a gift to any dinner party I am invited to attend, after all it is just a token of thanks and appreciation, but for David I wanted to make more of an effort than the usual bottle of wine; concluding to provide two bottles and my famous carrot and kiwi cake.

INGREDIENTS
STEP ONE
• • • •
Heat your oven to 150C/fan 130C/gas 2. Line a 20cm, 10cm deep cake tin. In a mixing bowl sift the flour, cinnamon, baking powder and bicarbonate of soda together and stir in the sugar. In a separate bowl beat the eggs with the oil and stir in the carrots, kiwi and fold into the flour mixture. Spoon the mixture into the tin and bake for 1 hour 20 minutes. Once cooked leave to cool and remove from the tin.
• • • • •
300g plain flour ½ tsp cinnamon 1 tsp baking powder ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda 200g soft brown sugar 4 eggs 250ml Vegetable Oil 150g Carrots, finely grated 200g Kiwi, skin removed and diced into 1 cm cubes
FOR THE FROSTING • • 125g Unsalted butter at room temperature • 100g Icing sugar • 250g Cream cheese • 1 Kiwi, skin removed and liquidised.
STEP TWO . For the frosting, beat the butter, icing sugar and kiwi together until soft and then beat in the cream cheese. Chill the mixture until it’s thick but spreadable. Spread a thick layer on top and sides of the cake.
Struggling out of the taxi with my two bottles of wine along with my cake box I arrive at David’s house and began to stare at the door deciding whether or not to turn around and just go home, but at that point the door began to slowly open and my heart started to race... There before me stood the most handsome man I had ever laid my eyes upon. ‘Hi, you must be Kraig.’ He said in a husky voice. My mouth dropped... And so did one of my bottles of wine, smashing onto the ground and soaking my trousers. David was not only stunning, he had succeeded in making me wet within the first 10 seconds of meeting him! Just when I thought the night could not get any more embarrassing it did! Yes David offered to wash my red wine soaked trousers to avoid me leaving any stains on his white sofa, just as I began to strip flash back of my underwear choice came back to me and I revealed to David my novelty boxers my mother had given to me over Christmas with a caged, angry hamster, gnawing at the bars with the quote ‘Release the beast!’ Two large glasses of wine later and with no pants on, I felt more relaxed and ready to indulge into the feast that David had prepared for me. I could not help but to gaze into David’s big brown eyes from across the candle lit table as he did the same to me, for a moment it felt like the world had stopped, everything around us went motionless, silent and enchanting until..... What I was hoping to come out as a discreet school girl giggle revealed itself as a primatial gruntshattering the moment we had created and leading me to down a further glass of wine and excuse myself from the table to go to the bathroom to find an escape route from the shame I had brought upon myself. As I sat on the edge of the bath holding my head in shame, I couldn’t believe I had put myself into this situation. Since I was told about this blind date all I could think about was the freak
David could be and not that I could actually be the freak. He must have had something incriminating in his bathroom to prove that he was not this perfect guy and at that point my eyes curved to his laundry basket, would it be bad of me to go through his dirty laundry to dig out some dirt? No, after the 3 glasses of wine I had had I felt like a man on a twisted mission, throwing clothes everywhere but not even finding a hole in a sock or unsightly marked undergarment. My attention turned to the medicine cabinet and that was where I found it... Behind the mounds of designer perfume I found a bottle of Derbac, for the treatment of pubic lice! Yes, I had discovered David has had or even worse, has a STI! I started to scan the bottle and giggle to myself, opening it to catch a glance of how much had been used. ‘Bang bang!’ ‘Is everything okay?’ David said from the other side of the bathroom door, making me jump and the opened bottle fly out of my hands and empty all over the bathroom sink. ‘Yeah, just a minute!’ I replied whilst trying my best to clean up the mess I had made and spraying just about every perfume he had to mask the smell of his slutty past. As I opened the bathroom door David was still standing there with the cutest cheeky grin on his face and slowly moved towards me, brushing his hand down my cheek and leaning in to kiss me, for what felt like hours’ was only
seconds as the putrid smell of Durbac and an assortment of perfumes got too much for him, making him cough and almost choke. How could I possible cover this one up? A, tell him the truth, B, tell him I have a stomach cramp or C, tell him I also have a big love for perfume? I did a mixture of the lots and then some (excluding B!) and told him I was looking for some mouth wash and accidentally knocked over his bottle of Durbac and didn’t want him to think I was just quickly applying it to myself on the off chance the evening would turn into a sleep over, so decided to cover it up with the beautiful scent of his perfume as I didn’t expect him to jump me as I excited the bathroom. As you may have guess I shortly departed David’s as to avoid any further embarrassment and am still to this day waiting for him to get back to me for a second date. Anyway I always like to keep my options open and have been tracked town and poke on Facebook by a lovely chap I apparently met and fraternised inappropriately with during stag party I recently attended... Sounds like another date could be coming my way?

here was a time when lube was just a dull and boring bottle of some slimy stuff, some of it clear and some of it, well bit more creamy-like. But they all had the same use. K-Y have come up with an ingenious new lube not only does it look far more sexy on the side table but it also comes with a few more tricks that other lubes have let slip away... haha - moving on. With a collection of lubes some to intensify the sensations during our more intimate moments but also a selection that can be massaged in as well, gives the use of lube a whole new meaning in the bedroom, table top, boardroom - wherever you want to try it out, K-Y have certainly got a big hit here. Available in most good chemists we recommend you give it a try, it also comes in a few flavours too. visit: http://www.k-y.com/ 53
MUSICFOCUS >>> TOP OF HIS CLASS Professor Green ALIVE TILL I’M DEAD Virgin Music Available: now. Music Type: English Rap with a twist of his own amazing personal touch. (Easiest way to describe it)

O
nce in a while there’s a musician that, well strikes a chord and Prof. Green has done just that and once again given Rap that much needed burst of talent which Eminem did all those years ago with his first album.
album does not fall short when you bring together his quirky and cheeky approach to rap. From his engaging tunes to his performance in his videos, make him an all rounder and with the right credentials behind him to make it bigg(er).
East Londoner Stephen Paul Manderson, aka Professor Green has given us a unique new taster in Rap. His tastefully chosen and what can be considered sweetly devised lyrics make his album the perfect entry into the UK rap VIP room, but it does not stop there. The strength of his
The Soul II Soul-sampling Just Be Good To Green, featuring Lily Allen galvanised his strength as a rap singer and his diverse skills both behind the mic and in front of the camera. His cheeky smile and crisp east London accent make listening to his album a dream. There
is a curiously down to earth approach to this young mans approach to his album with a sombre ending, but that just adds to the perfectly sculptured album he has created. When you listen to his album, and we so think you should, it wont be long before you realise how good it is, but also the feeling as you listen to each song that you have not only got to know Prof. Green but the man behind the music too. Well worth getting. CLICK>>

THE WANTED All Time Low Well they have taken the UK by storm with their mesmerising singing and, we cant complain staring at them, as not only can they sing but they are also pretty fit too. Their voices flow easily and seems very much like a Westlife revival, in a sort of ways but a newer and more approachable sort of band which is what the music scene lacked. So we give this the thumbs, with a whole set of stunning singles coming soon, they are worth your attention and also worth getting a copy too. ITCHENS
N
ow from time to time there comes a singer MIKE who makes BLISS things a little different and Steven
Hitchens is nothing more than remarkable when it comes to his latest and what we would say can be described to be a daring new single and an even more daring video. His latest video 1ME 2U’s is far from your normal music video as it takes sexuality to a near new level in what can be seen as a brave attempt at breaking that pseudo-sexual barrier when it comes to anything man on man scenes on any mucic video.
So when we contacted Steven we knew we were in for a different experience. We have been following Hitchens for a number of years and also one of those who have seen this young man go from geek-chic to pseudo-trend setter. His new look and image is in our humble opinion amazingly spot on for this new and much improved look. With this new image has come a far newer and energised performer, which is obvious when you look at how far he has come musically. Here at Q:ID we have his new song playing in the background and it didn’t take long for us to be tapping our feet and humming it along New Bond Street as we leave our offices for lunch. It also didn’t take long for others to start asking the big question, where do we get a copy of it for ourselves? Well fear not, all of Steven Hitchens songs including his new amazing single is available on itunes via his web site to download and we think you should and the video too, which you can sneakily view him seductively eating a cheery, we wonder who’s? We also have 5 signed copies of his Single to give away to the first five people who send us an email, and if your really nice we will throw in a few more treats as well. So visit www.stevenhitchens.co.uk and download your copy of his new single, total must have.

THE TALENTED MR BOSTON Q:ID Interviews the incredibly talented Jerry Boston, from fashion designer, PR guru and promotor of Alex Efrans Lovechild, we learn a bit about the charming man himself. photo: Brian Heath @ HYBRID IMAGES
So tell us about your typical night at Lovechild. Well it starts off with me walking into the club at the eleventh hour (11pm) already dress in some fabulous outfit which comes with 3-4 inch heels and a hairpiece. I normally look after the press and VIPs who have come to enjoy the party, stay in character until after the photo calls with the DJs, artists and performers before getting changed into my jeans and comfortable shoes to get “one’s” groove on. For anyone out there wanting to be a club promoter & host, what advice would you give? Know your guests. Be a character. Be an individual. You need to be confident in yourself to be able to dress up and feel comfortable in whatever you wear. That confidence can also be used to approach people – to talk to them and make sure everyone is having a good time. A little birdy tells us you’re a fashion designer tell us more? I graduated in June 2003 from the Manchester Metropolitan University with a Bachelor’s Degree 58
in Fashion Design and Technology specialising in menswear, and have worked for several fashion brands at different levels of the industry. In the spring/summer of 1999, I started off as a couturier’s assistant to Ade Bakare where I learned the basics of manipulating patterns, bespoke tailoring, garment fit and construction. As an intern, I moved on to Fake London where I utilise my pattern cutting skills. Fake is best known for its Union Jack / Pug cashmere sweaters and cushions. When the main line designer left the company in Summer 2003 which was just after my graduation, the owner Desirée Mejer asked me to take over the responsibility of Acting Head of Design which was a great learning opportunity. I built up my team with people I worked well with, asking a former course mate to look after the womenswear line while I remained responsible for the menswear and knitwear ranges, although I did have a lot of input to the womenswear range too. At Fake London Ltd, I gained my initial perception of a very volatile industry, but notice the selfgratification and rewards that can be obtained at
the end of each season’s hard work. This started my determination to succeed as a menswear designer. I create couture garments for women, and can even designing a range for production. I’ve even worked for a supplier that sold a few of my pieces to Kookai and Oasis. Nevertheless, I really enjoy dressing a male gender. Menswear is definitely where my heart is. Who has influenced you the most in design? I have more than one influence so I’ll only mention two main designers that influence my avant-garde and my classic looks. Alexander McQueen was a British style genius. The cut, the tailoring, the workmanship was just exquisite in every collection. Those who us who understand fashion know would look at any of his pieces and know the touch of a genius is in every garment. The pieces he created were very raw and provocative, always combining a rebellious spirit with a genius for tailoring to create new shapes. Dries Van Noten is my inspiration for when it comes to pret-a-porter. He may use prints, linens or British wools, but the main thing is that he wants men to have fun with their clothes, to easily wear them and play around with them. The cut is very important to him, as it is to me. I like to see men in fitted shirts, well tailored jackets and trousers. The modern man does not want to wear just one silhouette but many. While working at Fake London, I met design duo Francisco Collado and Carlos Garcia who were an inspiration to me as a young designer. I worked for Collado Garcia as a designer/pattern cutter for about a year before moving on to working on my own design projects. What’s the most austere piece you have ever designed and did you wear it? I have designed a few couture pieces for clients, family and friends. Even before I graduated, I had made my first couture dress and wedding gown. When my best friend came to me about four years ago and said “I’m getting married and would love you to do my wedding dress”, I thought this is it! I’m going to do the most creative piece to date. Then she explicated that the whole meringue look
was something she wanted to avoid, so I came up with the simplest design that would match her personality – I created something that was simplehearted yet as imposing as the Gherkin. As John Fairchild, Publisher of Women’s Wear Daily once said: “Style is an expression of individuality mixed with charisma.” What’s your advice on what someone should wear to Lovechild? There isn’t a dress code to Lovechild. You could wear as much or little as you want and no one would bat an eyelid. Be an individual or you’ll certainly blend in. The late Alexander McQueen said, “We don’t all want to dress like soldiers, in the same uniform, for the same price.” Your a mighty wise man what advice would you give someone going to Lovechild for the first time? I would say come with an open mind and enjoy the music. Each month, there is a fantastic DJ line up and it’s always fun to be in the audience enjoying the DJ’s sets and dancing till dawn, the fantastic stage shows from our dancers and erotic entertainers, and the occasional guest DJ or artist making a personal appearance. For the more adventurous guys, make sure you take a walk beyond the DJ box in the Contact Room, but maybe after a decent hour. Lovechild is a hedonistic party that brings sex, glamour and music together - just one of the party concepts produced by promoter Alex Erfan. What new projects have you coming up? Lovechild is on every second Saturday each month so make sure you don’t miss it! http://www. AlexErfan.com The Wig Party is an fundraising charity event that I host and volunteer at each year. It is a spectacular annual event where all proceeds are donated to our chosen charity, Crusaid’s Points of Light Zambia Campaign. It is flamboyant, glitzy, invigorating, but most of all its a fun party. The next party is in October so please come down and be a part of the experience. http://www.wigparty.org

BOOK REVIEWS The Gay Divorcee (Sphere) Paul Burston There are some works of literature that define an author, and there are some that catapult the author even further into the steamy throngs of literary royalty. Paul Burston has gone that little step further with his novel The Gay Divorcee and flung himself and us head first full into the reality of literary homosexual culture. With an edgy full on tone to the book, Burston sends us into what is a very contemporary story line filled with narrative that is so refreshingly real. He has like any good author placed us centre stage through Carl & Martin’s life, two characters from his novel, and we relate to the stark real narrative to the story. Without spoiling it, there are some parts you want to cry and others you want to hug Burston echoing “its so true, you do need to speak Portuguese to survive in Soho.” A MUST read, MUST Buy Book.
Trick of the Dark Val McDermid From the creator of Wire in the Blood, McDermid takes us once again on a wild and dark ride through the UK’s criminal underworld. Nail biting suspense and a return of Dr. Tony Hill. 60
The short second life of Bree Tanner Stephanie Meyer That quick glimpse of Bree Tanner at the ending of Full Moon, well this short novella explains it all, in such a way that I want to see this as a movie of it own.
The Third Man Peter Mandelson Oh my is all we had to say to Mandelson’s memoirs. Talk about stripping everything down and spreading it. If your a political buff this autobiography gets firmly under the skin.
Man’s World Rupert Smith This novel is one of those that takes a scalpel to gay culture and slices right through it. But also in a way where it tends to haemorrhage a fair bit as well along the way. But sometimes the loss of a little blood is an awakening experience, and in all fairness Man’s World gives you that near before and after account of a world filled with sex, drugs, and visions of the past and present. It reminded me of a novel I had read before, London Triptych by Jonathan Kemp. Both works had that similar approach to the way the author’s represented gay life and presented it to the reader. It was a good read, even at times a bit harrowing at the closeness but in a way which left me a bit raw to the nerve, possibly where I was expecting a romantic piece instead got something which was a bit too close to home. We did read it from cover to cover, but I await the next instalment as eager to see how Smith carries on.
The Journey Tony Blair There is an air of sympathy for our former PM, with his book launch cancelled through fears of an uprising. Soldiers and families most probably rightly angry at our former PM for the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. There is a certain controversial element to even owning this book. And having accidently put it on a coffee table while on lunch in Carnaby Street and being given the worst evil looks ever, swiftly hiding it again in my bag, there is a certain sadness to this autobiography. The book itself is a frank and rather exposing piece of autobiographical material, and maybe because of the controversy surrounding it, has detracted from this work. Lets not forget, ok he made mistakes, we cant fault him for being human, but the book itself does goes half way to explain his actions and decisions. Judging a little closer, its a poignant literary effort. But I think people expected more from Tony. Valiant effort but it will always be linked to the officers who died on their tour of duty. 61

here was a certain something about the year 1978. The world had 4.3bn people, Two popes dies this year, the Sony Walkman was introduced and not only was I also born this year on a very cold November evening.
Earlier the same year on 11th March, a novelist was born. Some may say into literary royalty, but the son of the late poet and painter Stan Rice and the bestselling novelist Anne Rice has proved to be a master wordsmith himself. At the age of 23 he wrote A Density of Souls. I remember the story well, and from then on in was hooked. When I first picked up his first novel, I had a certain expectation of what I would find, like I think a lot of us had ,given the family connection, but I was amazingly surprised. There was an essence of a young man coming of age with an amazing talent to fill your mind with a strong 62

myriad of description and metaphor. I found myself thrown into a world of mystery, American Jocks and that tender emotion of growing. I found his skill was truly formed in his third novel Light Before Day, where his skills had matured. And as a reader, I had matured with him as well. Recently having a conversation with Chris over something as unusual as ebooks, I remembered the passion which he has written his novels and the energy contained within them. Not sure if its a generational thing but here is an author every time he writes I can rapport with his emotion and theme’s. A raw unbridled talent. If you have never read a Christopher Rice novel I think you should go out and try them. There is a magic in his words, a strong dedication to his craft that makes his work unique. Jonathan Kemp: Author of his debut novel: London Triptych
London Triptych is to sum it up in a few words a history of how homosexuality plays its bit in modern culture and also past culture. Those little details that sometimes we miss out in life, Jonathan Kemp has caught onto them with extreme detail. His novel portray’s the lives of three very different men in very different times with an elegance but also exposes the bit parts that we sometimes miss. Kemp takes us on a journey through the lives of three men, all quite distinct and their interactions with their surroundings. Based in London the characters fade in and out through the changing city from Wilde’s 1890’s to the 1990’s. Kemp’s first novel has been like a scalpel slicing through our culture and past lives, carefully exposing the tender and sometimes raw reality underneath. A very enthralling read. Straight acting and being straight to the point... Scott-Austin Shaw with his usual finesse, the sharp eyed master wordsmith gives us a powerful and poignant piece on that phrase we all use so much. The label of straight acting.
Q
ueens, bears, twinks - so many names and labels under which we, as gay men are defined, makes me wonder about another label or definition: “straight acting”. What is straight acting? Is it a simple way of defining ones-self or is it cause for argument? I recently watched a show, “Playing it Straight”, where one girl must determine over 8 weeks, out of a group of guys, who is gay and who is straight. Now, its not as simple as that - none of the guys who are gay reveal their sexual orientation to her or any of the other guys and each week, she dates the guys and gets to know them and then each week, one guy is eliminated, and he must answer whether he is gay or straight and eventually, in the final week, she must pick the guy she thinks is straight to win the £100, 000 prize, split between her and him; however, if she picks the gay guy, she walks away with nothing, and the gay guy gets the lot. Harsh huh? It made me think - why would we do that to someone- pretend to be something we arent in a bid to outwit said poor girl, just to get our hands on a hundred grand? The jury is still out and I’m not sure I will come to a verdict very soon as I have mixed feelings on it. I guess I want to explore what is straight acting? Okay, so that might seem a dumb question, but I’ve never really thought about it in much depth - but should someone define themselves as straight acting, when it kind of goes against the whole concept of what being straight is? Again, I can’t give a fixed opinion, but I want to think about what is straight acting - why do some of us do it, define ourselves in that way, and does it make things any easier to be like that? Straight acting is usually a guy, who behaves in contrast the the stereotype of their sexuality, and is more commonly associated with men, and with women who are more feminine, the term lipstick lesbian is used. So, lets consider a few things so we can get the full picture. Gender stereotypes plays a huge part in this argument, as we discuss the behavioural patterns of gay and bi men. The scene and gay community is full of men in all shapes and sizes and all behave in different ways, some displaying more masculine and others more feminine qualities, which if looked at more closely, is just part of human behaviour - we all, regardless of sexual orientation behave in different ways with vast differences in our mannerisms. Does being gay test our limits of masculinity? Does being straight acting mean we are trying to hide something? Some may argue that trying to conform within a heteronormative system goes against our equality
64
and much more, however, surely we should be allowed to behave as we wish to, but I seriously do question should we really be telling people how they should behave? Are men more straight to the point if they are straight acting? I’ve not met many straight acting gay guys who constantly bitch and seem, well a lot more straight forward - although I will add that sometimes its hard to know what they are thinking. Obviously things cannot be simply cut and dry with this theory, but it does make me wonder. Gay dating websites and networking sites have seen a large boom over the last ten years, and this is where, for me anyway, it becomes a lot more interesting.
public would ever have dreamt he was gay. Our celebrity culture is full of openly gay men but yet I would say 80% of them fall into the category of being camp, more effeminate and an example of the stereotype of what many believe gay men are. I’m hoping that the coming out of Gareth Thomas is a beacon of better times ahead, allowing more closeted men to come out and admit they are gay, and that he is a role model for men, especially younger men who are coming to terms with their sexuality and feel a lot more comfortable about coming out. Thomas isn’t your average gay man - he’s just a guy, loves his rugby, and just happens to be gay - it just goes to show appearances can be deceiving.
Maybe, just maybe we are creating the probOn certain websites, you can end up seeing lems ourselves by defining as whatever we people you recognise who you would never define as - I’ve got friends, who if you were to have dreamt were bi, never mind gay. There’s see out and about, you would say they were a always the question of how do you define, and massive queen and yet behind closed doors, on some, there’s even a question of how gay they’re just your average guy with pretty much are you or what kind of gay are you, from camp- the same issues and problems as your “normal” tastic to a bit floppy handed to full on straight. guy. I guess its easy for me to make an opinion on this, but I don’t think its my place to - I think I have other friends who are 100% straight acteveryone should act however they feel most ing and wont go out on the scene as they don’t comfortable, and yet, it does beg the question - really like what they see. I’m going to play safe, do some men act straight to make life easier? and say it’s all entirely up to the individual. as for my personal thoughts on straight acting I really don’t know the answer to that, however, guys - well I wont deny I find them more attracwhat I do know, is that our society isn’t exactly tive. the most tolerant to us gays some of the time, and sometimes we don’t do ourselves any Don’t get me wrong, I still like a guy who looks favours by the way we behave, then again, that after themselves and their appearance, but I can be said about most members of society. just prefer guys who aren’t camp and effeminate and just like your average things in life. What added difficulties are there in coming That’s just me being honest about my personal out if you appear to be straight? Does it shape preference on my taste in men, which leads me the person you are? When you concider the to my final point and a realisation about myself: amount of gay men in the public spotlight, how many would you consider to be straight acting? My honesty will probably be the only “straight” I will admit, I have been struggling to think of thing about me... many, if not any. The only one who did spring to mind was Gareth Thomas, star Welsh rugby player, who made the front pages earlier this year for his shock revelation: he was gay. He admitted it was a long and had personal journey for him to make, costing him much in his personal life, including his childhood sweetheart and wife of 4 years. COMMUNITY
THE NOT SO BEAUTIFUL GAME T
here is a slight unsettling thought when one of the UK’s most popular games, supported by millions in all communities across the land is also one of the most homophobic cultures in sports. Alan Duffy of the Justin Fashanu Campaign gives us a insight into their campaign to crush homophobia in whats meant to be the beautiful game. words: Alan Duffy

T
welve years ago Justin Fashanu was found hanged in a disused garage in London. It was a tragic end to the life of the first openly gay professional football player, whose sexuality blighted his career. The Justin Campaign was founded to fight the stereotypes the powerful centre forward had to battle on a daily basis. As BBC Five Live presenter Mark Chapman admitted in a recent interview with the campaign, homophobia in football is the “last taboo”. Along with raising awareness the campaign has a strong focus on art, events, education and football. Through these four key initiatives and working with other inclusive sporting organisations, The Justin Campaign seeks to challenge the stereotypes and misconceptions that exist around gay and bisexual men and women in football. It hopes to work towards a future where the visibility of gay and bisexual men in professional football is both accepted and celebrated. Jason Hall, the campaign’s founding director, said: “Justin Fashanu forced the world of football to acknowledge that you can love men, whilst at the same time be a world-class footballer. “His bravery has created inroads for our community in the football world and has inspired a generation of gay and bisexual men, who now believe that we to, can be part of the beautiful game.” This year, The Justin Campaign launched Football Vs Homophobia, an international day opposing homophobia in football. The annual event provides an opportunity for individuals, communities and teams
the world over to communicate their disapproval of homophobia in football and celebrate football’s diverse following. The focus for the first ever Football Vs Homophobia took place in Norwich on February 19, 2010, just yards away from Carrow Road where Justin Fashanu began his career with Norwich City. Events took place in six other cities in the UK while campaigners in Washington DC, Mexico City, Zagreb and Barcelona organised tournaments under the Football Vs Homophobia banner. Next year it is hoped the annual celebration, which takes place on February 19 - the anniversary of Justin’s birthday, will be even bigger and better. The campaign hopes you can express your support for the day next year and ensure this initiative significantly changes how LGBT people are perceived and treated in football. Remember you don’t have to be a football fan or sports group to back the campaign. Impacting on homophobia in football will communicate a zero tolerance attitude to homophobia in any shape, or form, across the world. You can help be a part of banishing the “last taboo” and ridding ugliness from the beautiful game. From China to Peru. Where does that treasured piece really come from? Mark Lawrence gives us a great and disturbing insight into the world of Antique looting and how rife it is and right in our homes. “You woudn’t buy a car without looking at its MOT - would you?“
E
very day, looting and plundering of priceless cultural treasures continues all over the world. The problem is most acute in Africa, Southeast Asia, China, Latin America, the Middle East, and the Himalaya region. For decades, rampant looting has similarly devastated pre-Columbian sites in Guatemala, Brazil, Costa Rica, Mexico, Ecuador, and Bolivia. The underground antiquities trade prospers in such places, because many third-world countries are rich in undiscovered cultural treasure. Local residents are often tempted to trade their heritage for quick income that represents a tiny percentage of the artefacts’ true value and thus making the middle man a much larger profit. In China, for example, experts estimate that the looting of cultural treasures during the past 20 years has surpassed the destruction that occurred during the Cultural Revolution of 1966-1976. Recently, the Washington Post reported that Buddhist statues stolen directly from Beijing’s Forbidden Palace had been sold in October 2002 at a Christie’s auction in Hong Kong. Any economic benefit that communities derive from looting is grossly exaggerated—and tiny compared to the benefit those communities would derive from keeping the artefacts in situ. And China is the country id like to focus on in this article. Now you may say to yourself that while this article may sound interesting and certainly eye opening, what does it have to do with me? Well like myself , many of you after furnishing a room or new home might think to yourself that something is missing. Now alot of people may hop along to a shop like The Pier or John Lewis to find a few nice pieces to complete a room. But some of you may opt for buying the real thing and this is where this article could affect you!. Now luckily because of tighter customs checking and dealers asking for a pieces background and proof that a item entered our country legally , such cases are nowadays a rarity. However from time to time pieces do come up that have a somewhat unclear past. Museums and galleries across the UK are now checking their collections in regards to looting that happen during Germany’s occupation of most of mainland Europe and as to how such pieces found their way into UK collections.

I myself own a number of antiquities ranging from early Egyptian pieces to chinese tang dynasty figurines. Each piece i buy from outside of a respected auction house or dealer has to come with a clear history or i simply put the thing down and run a mile!.
French readily accepted the pamphlets. One of them said “I appreciate what you are doing, and I think all the looted relics, including these two, should be returned to China.”
A story in the news recently caught my attention in regards to Chinas cultural past coming up yet again, but this time in a respected international auction house. It is now clear that many of the chinese wish to have items of importance to their cultural history and identity returned to them.
“We want French people to understand that we are rational and our requests are legitimate,” said Zhou Chao, another Chinese student at a French polytechnic institute.
A group of Chinese lawyers filed a lawsuit earlier this month with the Tribunal de Grande Looting in China and well as such sites like Peru Instance in Paris, asking for an injunction. has increased to alarming rates in the past 10 However, the court ruled against their demand years and sadly some of these cultural artworks and ordered compensation to the defendant. find their way into the shops and dealerships we “Although we failed in the lawsuit, justice will all sometimes visit. As two pieces of looted Chinese relics were on the stage for auction in the Grand Palace of Paris on Wednesday, a group of Chinese students gathered in front of the palace and handed out leaflets about the history of Yuanmingyuan (Old Summer Palace) and the Second Opium War. The two bronzes are something new to the French, but history to the Chinese, Li Huan, a Chinese student studying in France told Xinhua. Amid strong protest of the Chinese government and people, French auction house Christie’s sold the Chinese relics out for 14million euros (17.92 million U.S. dollars) each to anonymous telephone bidders. The Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) relics, bronze heads of a rabbit and a rat are among an original set of 12 sculptures that once adorned the imperial summer resort Yuanmingyuan. They were looted when the palace was burnt down by Anglo-French allied forces during the Second Opium War in 1860. Giving out pamphlets about the looting of Yuangmingyuan by Western powers, Li Huan said that French people should learn more about that part of history. He noted that many
Yang Yongju, president of the European Times, the flagship Chinese-language newspaper in France said it is “unacceptable to put stolen works for auction.” “These relics bear China’s cultural sovereignty and its national sentiment. What at issue is not their prices. It is totally unacceptable to loot them and then put them up for auction,” she said. The views of the Chinese people were shared by many of their foreign friends. “My heart sank when the court refused our appeal,” said Bernard Gomez, president of the Association for the Protection of Chinese Art in Europe (APACE), the organization that serves as plaintiff in the lawsuit. “I hope the two relics could go home eventually,” Gomez added. The controversial auction of the two bronze heads at Christie’s raised the Chinese people’s concerns for the fate of their overseas cultural heritage and brought world’s attention to the shameful trading of the looted relics. After reading this article you may ask yourself “ but that was so long ago?” Time passing by should never justify looting. So remember guys , when your out shopping and something catches your eye make sure you ask about its provenace. After all you wouldn’t buy a car without looking at its m.o.t - would you? 81
