Brainrush by Richard Bard

OVERVIEW Before he slid into the MRI machine, Jake Bronson was just an ordinary guy with terminal cancer. But when an earthquake hits during the procedure, Jake staggers from the wreckage a profoundly changed man, now endowed with uncanny mental abilities. An ocean away, Luciano Battista wants a piece of Jake’s talent. Posing as a pioneering scientist, the terrorist leader has been conducting cerebral-implant experiments in a sinister quest to create a breed of super jihadist agents…and Jake’s altered brain may be the key to his success. But Jake refuses to play the pawn in an unholy war—and when an innocent woman and autistic child are taken hostage to force his cooperation, he embarks on a jihad of his own. Jake and his band of loyal friends are thrust into a deadly chase that leads from the canals of Venice through Monte Carlo and finally to an ancient cavern in the Hindu Kush mountains of Afghanistan—where Jake discovers that his newfound talents carry a hidden price that threatens the entire human race.

REVIEWS Faster than greased lightning - paranormal thriller! By Cheryl Stout "Brainrush" is one quick moving action-packed paranormal thriller. I hate MRIs and I don't know what I'd do if I was in an MRI device and there was an earthquake. I am sure a change of clothing would be involved. Jake Bronson has a brain tumor and has to have an MRI and guess what happens? But in his case the benefits far exceed the terror he feels during the quake. Once he settles down, he realizes he now has paranormal powers - amazing facility with numbers, with languages, telekinesis, telepathy and more. And the book doesn't stop with his powers. Brain implants, jihadists, high tech toys and non-stop action that had me flipping through the pages on my Kindle and staying up much too late. A good mix of genres!! By Liz Shannon Brainrush is a thriller/sci-fi/military/terrorism story. This isn't normally my favorite genre, but the description sounded compelling so I thought I'd give it a try. The story developed quickly, but fairly thoroughly, and the characters were likable. As some of the other reviews have mentioned, there are definitely some parts where you might have to suspend belief a little. Some things are pretty coincidental, like one character speaking fluent Italian when their friend is taken to Italy, or unrealistic (non sci-fi portions), like a few soldiers taking on a couple hundred enemies, but if you just go with it the story is very enjoyable! There are LOTS of very specific military/gun/ammunition/plane references, like makes and models, that were a little distracting to someone like me who knows nothing about that type of thing, but I'm sure that would enhance the story for someone on the other side of the spectrum!
