/ SITUATIONS IN THE CITY / Liangmahe: Cycle Infrastructure and Public Space · 2016.08.15—2016.12.16 · Diploma Work
Project Introduction This diploma project is a design of one bike path along the river Liangmahe in Beijing. People used to bike so often in Beijing. From home, to school, to work, to shops. For commuting and for leisure. The initial goal of this project is to attract people’s attention for cycling, and bring the lost bike culture back. One of the biggest potential of Beijing when it comes to urban cycling resurrection is that the era of bicycle is still fresh in our mind.
Description of Design The city has expanded from the inside out, resembling an onion, ring by ring. And the river is flowing through these rings from ring 2 to ring 5. Different urban situations have formed along it. I believe these very characteristic situations have the potential to be developed much stronger respectively, and together they can compose to one line that is very attractive. The project covers a distance of approximate 10 km. But it is not just a line from A to B for efficient commuting. It also carries impressive urban space for daily leisure. It is about bringing the existing river Liangmahe to daily life by integrating different urban situations alongside a consistent bike journey.
Location To locate the site, I mapped out all the potential bike routes composing as the future vision for the city. YONGDINGHE

I decided to pick from the nature lines. Because Instead of pitting cycling against driving in a contest for city space, follow-the-nature model would have cyclists retreat to an alternative cycle space, which they could gradually develop with cycling as the main emphasis. Then this better quality of life, in time, would likely attract current non-cyclists to live this cycling lifestyle as well. This river Liangmahe can just be the very first trial. If it successful, more bike routes can follow.

The first approach is to get inspiration from historical photos. By referring back to the past, I could re-establish these characteristic places resembling the living memories. I chose three situations out of five. The canal, the swamp and the alley. A trip of mono profile is less amusing. Different river forms can correspond to different urban situations. Therefore, cyclists are able to experience a variety of urban life through the length of the journey and through differences of the season.
Canal Life
One of the common principles for choosing where to frame the small projects is that the chosen spots are always able to improve the existing network, in order to bring people to the main line and relink urban public space to its users. Based on the existing river park, this strip in between of embassy district and busiNETWORK DIAGNO ness district now is possible for carrying a variety of urban activities. The circular installation addresses three design questions: First, the bridge. It is a linkage of two very different districts improving accessibility and connection to the city. Second, the circle. It offers a longer distance for a gentler incline for cyclists as well as a panorama view when biking over the canal.
PLAN
Third, the sunken plaza inside the circular form. The sunken plaza gives urban activities enclosure space, in addition, an eye level view of the surrounding body of water.
PERSPECTIVE, WINTER
In winter, the river will be frozen for about one month. Then it comes to this temporary ice skating activity.

Cross Swamp
PERSPECTIVE, SPRING This area was initially a low-lying swamp. It had been cleaned up and shaped into a 68-hectare lake in the 80s. Currently the lake is separate from Liangmahe stream by a water gate and using reclaimed water as supply. My proposal is to re-naturalizing the constructed canal. By moving the hard canal surface away and using plants to fix the slope, the river becomes not isolated but a part of the park. This nature form responds to certain important question that what this area really is. The design for this situation is a hybrid of network improvement
and polluted water treatment. The new cycle path leads cyclists from one side to the other over the water as an entrance to the park. Through the 150-meter water channel between Liangmahe and the lake, different species of wetland plants are selected to absorb pollutants from the river, so that the water body can channelled again.
PLAN
When crossing the swamp, cyclists get to experience this lush natural vegetation. SECTION

the past.
Using bicycle transit as a basis for urban development is unthinkable under the current car dependent society form. However, the whole process can only begin when there comes the very first specially zoned parcel of land as evidence that bicycle dependence is actually doable.
The design intends to improve the existing network as well. By adding a shortcut and a platform, people could either join the main road network easily, or stay and enjoy this island view.
Unlike the well-developed urban area, this remote suburban area has the potential to become a bike-oriented district. A ten-meter-wide bike route under consistent tree canopies intends to create moments of today that resemble moments in
The design also intends to pick up the issue of flood protection by collecting the water with vegetation filter. The bicycle route is not about single cyclist any more. It is casting a future suburban development mode that oriented by bikes.

Project Introduction The plaza was designed for the area outside of the north gate of CAFA, which covered an area of 6750m². I chose the entrance of the plaza for detail design after the overall design of it had been finished.
WATER → FLOW
Description of Design I like the appearance when water flows by stone. In this work, I was inspired by the flow. When water flows by a stone, due to the obstacle, it will slow down and flow by both side of the stone. I cut different sizes of the floor tiles according to the frequency of use. Meanwhile, I cut out some triangle area of the floor tiles to let the soil exposed so that the local weed would grow naturally rather than be inhibited.

PROGRAMMATIC PLAN
Project Introduction This project is part of the Oslo Architecture Triennial 2016 – After Belonging. It is about transforming the Stenersen Museum building (which has been vacated recently) into an unconventional storage as a sharing facility, using the existing set of dark spaces and the urban quality of the plaza.

PUBLIC HALL SHOWROOM
Public Mini storage facilities are very useful for a life ‘in-transit’ in which the relation to our belongings is radically transformed. But could we possible rethink the way we use and design these storage in an era of sharing economy and mobility? I propose a storage space combined with the idea of display and share. Therefore, the Stenersen Museum becomes a mini storage and an analogue platform for sharing.

Limited Access
The building is used by three different kinds of people, taking a main part in the whole process: Membership holder owners in need of storage space, seekers in need of objects, and curators whose job is to arrange objects deprived of single ownership.
PROGRAMMATIC SECTION
The glass box appears as a public entry point designed only based on the existing triple space, and specially to welcome visitors. It cuts through four layers, with a lifting platform for both transport and display.
Every weekend, a Pop-up flea market appears on the roof plaza. Extroverted, it engages a larger audience.

PUBLIC HALL
The building will offer three different types of spaces: Public spaces (public hall, café, member centre and plaza), limited access spaces (collective basement including showrooms) and private spaces (storage and staff offices). In the limited access spaces, 7 showrooms will explore 7 different types of belongings, organized by curators.

There are 11 existing conventional mini storage in Oslo region, but none of them are in downtown. The Stenersen Museum, located right along Ring 1, has the location advantage to become an unusual storage facility that Oslo city never had.

The Stenersen Museum is surrounded by a very vibrant urban life circle, including both culture and commercial. This gives the site a sufficient context to transform into a hybrid that combine the artistic value and the commercial value together.

/ ENGLAST-IMAGINE A GREEN FILIPSTAD / A Temporary Art Installation · 2015.05.18—2015.06.01 · Group Work
Project Introduction The assignment was to design and build up an art installation along the harbor promenade of Oslo, that was open for visitors of the summer 2015. The aim of the project is to create an awareness of the open space in the future planning of the area. The installation of a container relates to the current character of the harbor, while the content - an endless meadow, shows the possibilities of the future public space of the site. The container was placed between Filipstad and Tjuvholmen during 14 June-20 September.
Description of Design WHY - To raise awarness on Filipstad's contrasting potentials between its current landscape and its future transformations. WHAT - The container as a key-factor to both site's specificness and potencial new 'brought in' atmospheres and experiences to Filipstad in the years to come. HOW - Explore such experiences through colour, smell, sound and optical illusion on encloseness and openess.
