CROSS POLLINATION

1

RADICAL DOMESTICITY PORTLAND, OR

In collaboration with Dong, Xiaoyan and instructed by Anne Munly, the project tries to rethink the definition of LIVE/WORK space and explore the potential of this concept. Taking the idea of adaptability and stretch it to the limit. The project introduces a self-sufficient community in the city of Portland and proposes a sustainable lifestyle to the neighborhood. With the development of technology and the evolution of social structure, the idea of incorporating working experience into the living environment becomes more and more desirable. To establish a dynamic studio space where cross-pollination occurs between the reputation and craft of established artists and the energy and vitality of emerging artists. The building itself consists of a fourstories total, with three stories above ground being living units, and the basement solely dedicated to space for artists.

REGULATION WORKSHOP NEW YORK, NY

Instructed by Timothy Stenson, the Project located in a run-down building at the crossroad between E 3st St. and Madison Ave in New York City, to design a University Alumni Club of Syracuse University. In a large city like NYC, a city building section distinct, and often required single-faced facade with much more attention compare to the buildings outside of the city boundary. A sun diagram is applied to this particular facade strategy, whereas the sun often rises to at a lower angle and shine down at the open street in the morning, slowly hiding stashed away, and finally, shine away at the end of the day at the other end of the block. The Facade response to these changes, Concaved in, forming two-sided facade. The two level acid glass defines the pedestrian level and public space. Inside of the building, club hosts guest rooms, office space, restaurants, gallery, and a fitness center. The section and plans have the task to fit multiple programs in harmony. Letting the light shine in the deepest corner of the building. The building is scheduled with two fire egress with one-sided elevator core formed a two side-wings with one central room grid space regulation.

DYNAMIC ADDITION SYRACUSE, NY

In collaboration with Dong, Xiaoyan and instructed by Anne Munly, the project services as restaurant addition competition for a local artistic restaurant owner to further integrate the living and working quality of the existing building. Instead of an addition of fixed program, the proposal introduced a more dynamic volume to the existing building. With a movable trunk of space on the second floor and multiple rearrangeable tables, the additional space can be used as both an extension of restaurant seating area as well as an elongated studio space. Concrete and steel structure are chosen as structure material as well due to the modular structural system. With the modules, new additions line up with each other, creating a new ground on the green roof on the second floor. This proposal could be a potential urban prototype, regenerating Syracuse downtown area. The adjustable volume on the second floor can be arranged according to needs by some operations on the railing system. When added to the front, the volume creates a 30 feet facade, the material of which resembles the working desk of the artist, producing a “Billboard effect for the restaurant.

4 ON THE ROAD

EXTREME LANDSCAPE SEATTLE, WA

Instructed by Roger Hubeli, the project located next to the famous floating bridge, Lacey V. Murrow Memorial Bridge, outside of Seattle, WA crossing Lake Washington. The task is to image the impossible and possible both above and under the Lake expanded the fundamental spatial thinking by positioning formal and spatial investigations within a more extensive analysis of the scale of extreme landscape environmental context. By using Grasshopper, and taking the idea of floating bridge’s pontoons, a unique pontoon cell was designed as the entire structural and spatial system, creating a large floating platform connected to the floating bridge as a road house and entertainment platform hosting the potentials of the ecosystem at the center of Lake Washington. There are different human activates active at the center of the lake. There is a great potential to provide a road stop at the middle of pontoon bridge to connect the ecosystem with the high-speed transportation system, creating new possibilities.

RECALL OF WILDNESS ONONDAGA, NY BOAT LANDING

5

In collaboration with Joy XiaoHan and instructed by Roger Hubeli, Historically, industrial processing plants and municipal wastewater treatment plants routinely discharged their wastes into the Onondaga Lake, Syracuse. Today, vast areas of the western shoreline are occupied by the “Solvay waste beds. The site contains two types of lands of occupation, undeveloped forest and fully-developed urban city Syracuse like an epitome around the lake. The project is a bridge-like infrastructure which induces people from the mall into the lake. Meantime, the bridge is built as a recreation park. However, even as the undeveloped forest, the land has been polluted and decade. A study showed that a large area of marshland was originally surrounded the Onondaga Lake. This project is also trying to accomplish an artificial marshland for this field where the architecture itself served as an irrigation system to recall and recover the wetland.

TWO IN ONE BROOKLYN, NY

6 HOTEL WINERY

The project is instructed by Terrance Goode, the site located the side of Brooklyn-Queen Express where the Metropolitan Ave and Marcy Ave meet. This unique site locates at a historical city boundary with two city grid and one super-imposed modern highway, creating a complex urban seam. The project gain interest with its form fit into two distinct city grid. From the Metropolitan Ave, leave the open space from the site creating the city square with the Church of Annunciation across the street, hosting the hotel program. On the other hand, align with the B.Q.E. connect to the park across the Marcy Ave to create competitive environment, hiding the winery factory under the green roof terrain. Moreover, the two condition meet at the tasting room with different floor level, created an inviting contradiction.

ROMA REDUX

ATHLETIC SEQ. MASTER-PLAN ROME, ITALY

Instructed by Richard Rosa, the project engaged the question about nature of public architecture in the urban environment, the role of the inherently public building and of the publicly accessible public or private building in the city and the effect these interventions have on the urban environment. The casual relationship between urban enterprise and the public institution will be addressed. The site located south of Rome from Fiume Tevere cross Circo Massimo the edge of the old city wall. From the complicated urban position to design such an important site. Positioned as a city object. Three sequences, Pavilion, Athletic and Garden, gave citizens and visitors new possibilities of recreation.
