WHY CHOOSE QMC?

WHY CHOOSE QMC?

WHY CHOOSE QMC? WHAT OFSTED SAY:

WHAT OUR STUDENTS LIKE:

Ofsted’s latest visit was a short inspection carried out in 2016. The Inspectors confirmed their findings from the previous visit in 2010, where all areas of the College were graded ‘good’ or ‘outstanding.’ Their most recent observations were:

Students enjoy a highly positive experience; one in which everyone is supported and encouraged to excel and reach their full potential. Our students’ top ten aspects of Queen Mary’s College are:

• The culture of continuous improvement is at the heart of the excellent student success rates • The student experience is of a notable high quality • Students’ programmes of study are closely aligned to their needs and aspirations

DEAN POSTHUMA Attended QMC 2014-2016 I enjoyed learning in a place with great facilities. I found that the courses were taught in a way that prepared me well for the future, not only by providing me with essential knowledge and skills I have used extensively, but also by encouraging students to be independent. The learning environment was great and I felt I had a strong connection/involvement with other students and teachers due to the positive atmosphere that this created. Soon after starting at QMC, we were encouraged to explore all of the career opportunities that would be available after completing our courses. The support and interview guidance I received played a significant part in obtaining the offer to study Chemical Engineering at Imperial College in London, where I am now. Being at QMC allowed me to work alongside a diverse group of people and through extra activities and enrichment courses I left QMC well rounded, a quality that will help me succeed regardless of the path I take in the future.

WHY CHOOSE QMC?

EXCELLENT EXAM RESULTS

BUILDING SKILLS FOR A BETTER FUTURE

Performance was consistently high across all subject areas once again in 2018, enabling students to progress successfully onto a wide range of degrees and apprenticeships.

The majority of students achieve beyond the expectations of them at the start of their courses. They progress well onto higher levels of study while at College and the vast majority progress successfully into higher education or employment upon leaving Queen Mary’s College

With nearly 2,000 entries at A level the overall pass rate was 99% with 77% of all grades awarded being A*-C. Many students supplemented their A level programme with an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), designed to develop many of the skills required for higher education or employment. 81% of all students taking this qualification gained either an A*, A or B grade. The results for Applied General qualifications were also outstanding with over 50% achieving Distinction* grades, equivalent to an A* grade at A-level.

“I have been working with QMC as a school liaison representative as part of an AWE initiative to inspire young people into STEM subjects. We organise and take part in events to promote STEM subjects within the College for college students and schools in the local area. Our aim is to highlight what a career in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths involves and its many benefits. The students at QMC are always keen to participate in the events, show good understanding of scientific principles and are developing keen investigative scientific minds. They are very approachable, show good initiative, work well as part of a team and work hard to find the answers to any conundrum placed in front on them. With the combination of academic learning and STEM promotion from companies, including AWE, students from QMC have a wideranging scientific education during their time at college.”

JEROME COURTOIS Costello School QMC helped me to achieve fantastic results in so many ways and I am very grateful for the time I spent there! I really liked the teachers and their teaching was absolutely superb. I loved my subjects and there was always support and guidance available when I needed it. At QMC you’ll find lots of opportunities to take advantage of and brilliant facilities too.

Studying Electronics as an extra activity was invaluable for me, as when I joined QMC I was unsure of where I wanted to go. Being able to make and learn about simple circuits gave me the experience to make an informed and confident decision that I wanted to go on and study Electronics at university. The course was also built around tasks and projects which made it really enjoyable, rather than being focussed solely on learning about components. The Competitive Physics enrichment fuelled my personal interest in physics and engineering as well as providing extra help and support for any university entrance exams / interviews. I really enjoyed it because I was able to extend my learning outside of the curriculum, with other people who were also really passionate about the subject.

COLLEGE FIELD TRIPS

COLLEGE FIELD TRIPS

College field trips During your time at College you will have the opportunity to go on field trips and visits, which will bring to life what you have been studying in the classroom. College field trips are always planned with an educational focus so, as well as being a great opportunity to visit a new place and have fun, they will enhance your learning and understanding of a subject.

RECENT FIELD TRIPS HAVE INCLUDED... Media and Film students enjoyed a trip to Los Angeles where highlights included visiting Warner Brothers, Sony and Universal Studios and checking out the sights of Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Rodeo Drive and Sunset Boulevard. On a trip to New York Art students gathered artist references from a range of galleries including Moma and The Guggenheim. They also completed various drawing/painting/photographic tasks throughout their stay in the city. Sport students visited Portsmouth University where they took part in laboratory based fitness tests, lectures and workshops. Politics students visited the Houses of Parliament, where they saw the Speaker’s procession and had a tour of the House of Lords. Geography students enjoyed a visit to the Sussex coast to complete various fieldwork activities including land use sketching, land use survey, pedestrian counts and Environmental Quality Survey Questionnaires.

LAUREN COOK Testbourne Community School The amount of opportunities and trips that are available really help you to make the most of your time here. The Competitive Chemistry enrichment enabled me to gain further knowledge of the subject and to apply it in context. I also expanded my knowledge on the Chemistry Live trip, where I got to attend various lectures run by world renowned scientists who are leaders in their field. The workload is a step up from secondary school but as long as you enjoy your subjects this is not a problem. The teachers are very friendly and willing to help you and I love that they allow you to really explore the subject.

COLLEGE FIELD TRIPS

GETTING WHERE YOU WANT TO GO Volunteering students gained an insight into West Africa during a trip to Ghana. During the stay they enjoyed supporting children at a nursery and spent time helping members of the local community. Duke of Edinburgh Award students enjoyed numerous camping and walking experiences in preparation for their assessed expeditions.

College goes by very quickly so put as much effort in as you can but also make time to indulge in the social life and the facilities here because there’s so much you can choose to do. All of the teachers are very happy to sit down one-to-one and discuss any confusion that I might have. I have found guidance in every aspect I needed: courses, universities, careers, personal advice, Oxbridge and Selecting Universities group and extracurricular work. Due to all of the support I’ve received at QMC, I have been able to grow into the person that I want to be, personally and academically.

Economics students enjoyed a day out in London with a tour of the historical financial district of the city, and visits to the Bank of England Museum and the London Transport Museum. iology students spent a day at ‘LifeLab’ – a genetics teaching B facility in Southampton General Hospital where they participated in debates, discussions and hands-on activities relating to genetics. Psychology students explored the topic of Social Influence on a trip to Krakow in Poland. The students visited four key places, that show the history of Poles and Jews particularly during the Second World War. During a tour of Auschwitz, a concentration and extermination camp operated by Nazi Germany during the Second World War, students met a survivor who narrated her experience there as a child.

INDIVIDUAL LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT

INDIVIDUAL LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT

WORK EXPERIENCE AND VOLUNTEERING Apply by 31st December to avoid missing out on invitations to bespoke events such as High Achievers’ and subject specific evenings.

Work experience and Volunteering are highly beneficial, both for your university application/CV, and for you as an individual. Taking up a work shadowing or voluntary position will help you develop your skills, boost your confidence and greatly enhance your employment prospects in later life. While you are at College we will highlight opportunities available to you. Many courses make work experience a compulsory module but we will also help you to find placements outside of College time. Opportunities are both varied and diverse to cover a range of career aspirations. For example; Health and Social Care students have spent time volunteering in care settings; potential medics have gained experience shadowing doctors and observing procedures at hospital; future teachers have spent time in local schools each week, as part of their ‘Learning with Children’ enrichment; computer enthusiasts have put their classroom learning into practice during placements at top IT companies; and students keen to pursue a sports orientated career have gained invaluable experience delivering regular coaching sessions to school children.

HIGH ACHIEVERS

Individual learning and development

At College you will be embarking on something new and exciting, both socially and academically, and will be moving a step closer to independence. Although we are here to help you, you will be expected to work hard and take responsibility for your own learning and development. Students find that QMC is a step up from school and a great way to prepare for study at university or a job. At College you will have daily timetabled lessons, but will also have a number of study periods. You should use this time for independent working, coursework, revision and extra reading. You may also want to use this time to take part in some extra-curricular activities that will help you develop and gain new skills.

Education for High Achievers is a key priority for us. We have a fine and longstanding tradition of providing challenging and stretching opportunities for students who are academically gifted, or talented in another area such as sports or the arts. QMC students who applied to Oxbridge for 2018 entry were offered places, in subjects as diverse as PPE, Maths, History, Politics, Physics, Anglo Saxon Studies Engineering, Experimental Psychology, Human Sciences and Modern and Medieval Languages. We also provide additional support for students who are talented in other areas and, for example, play for national sports teams, win prestigious art and media awards, dance and act in national productions or play in highly respected orchestras. Wherever your area of talent lies, we are here to support you to help you achieve your potential and reach your goals. Download our High Achievers’ Booklet at www.qmc.ac.uk/publications to view the full programme and/or pick up a copy at an Open Evening. High Achievers will also be invited to attend an information evening on 27th March 2019.

LOUIS SOCCARD The Hurst Community College I aim to attend a top university and am so glad that QMC was my first choice. The quality of teaching combined with the excellent facilities, independence and many opportunities given to me has been outstanding. Teachers and students get on really well. There is mutual respect and no disruptive students as everyone wants to be here and to learn about the subject that they have chosen to study. The Oxbridge Group provides both interesting information and incentives to do well and allows you to start considering future options early. Speakers from top universities visit the group to provide inspiring talks and the QMC Careers Team send regular updates regarding opportunities that enhance your chances of gaining a top university place. In addition, the regular oneto-ones with my personal tutor help me to reflect on what steps I need to take and how to further my chances of succeeding at QMC and beyond.

ALICIA PERKINS St. Gabriel’s School I chose QMC because I wanted independence, freedom and a friendly environment to study in, along with access to support when required. I attended on Open Evening and felt that QMC was definitely right for me. Teachers are always there if you need help. It’s great that one of your subject teachers is also your Personal Tutor and that the Careers Office is open and accessible if you ever have a question. The Exams Team have supported me to get the extra time I need for exams and I’ve also received guidance with the UCAS application process. To sum up my first year at College I’d say it’s been a place where I’ve made great friends, enjoyed the space and facilities and studying here has been fun, challenging and rewarding.

In the first year, the course expands and develops students’ practical skills, knowledge and understanding of materials. Students will learn a wide variety of drawing, printmaking, craft and textile techniques and will create exciting contemporary artwork in two and three dimensions, ideal if you want to explore processes and techniques from across the department.

Art

and design The creative arts are at the forefront of British economic growth. The understanding engendered through studying art, design and photography at QMC equips young people with a visual literacy which enriches their lives and their cognition, whilst the skills they learn prepare them for higher level study or employment.

During the second year the course seeks to build on knowledge gained during the first year and develop the ability to work independently through sustained investigations, development of ideas and in depth analysis. Students will also work on a variety of briefs but they will be more personally directed. The conclusion of the two year A level course will be for students to present two components of work in the form of a portfolio with an externally set assignment. Fine Art – Painting and Drawing A Level This course aims to expand your knowledge and skills in Fine Art. The subject’s main aim is to communicate ideas in an exciting visual form, to explore materials and experience many different techniques and ideas. Projects and themes in the first component are devised by the course team and by the examination board for the second component.

ART AND DESIGN You will be introduced to a wide range of skills and techniques in printmaking, painting and drawing. You can include mixed media approaches and some conceptual thinking is required. The teachers are great and have pushed me to my full capability and challenged me to achieve higher than I ever imagined. I used to underestimate myself most of the time but they have really helped to build my confidence and self-belief and I can now look back and see how much my work has improved as a result. I’ve enjoyed exploring ideas and learning to come up with alternatives when things don’t go to plan. I’ve increased my skills and understanding across different aspects of art and developing my own designs into final 2D and 3D pieces of art makes me feel a sense of accomplishment and success every time! The Life Drawing enrichment was a great choice for me and helped with my observational drawing skills. I am hoping to do architecture and so the skills I’ve gained will really help when it comes to drawing quick initial designs and sketches of real sights and buildings.

BUSINESS EDUCATION

Business education

ELLIE ABLEY Testbourne Community School

Although I enjoyed all of my subjects I really liked how Business changes every day and so there was always something new to talk about. It is relatable to everything and it was hard not to become immersed in it. Each teacher cares about the students and wants them to do the best they possibly can. I think that the support you receive really makes the college experience a lot less daunting. You do have to be more independent but with QMC you are supported all of the way. I have now started an apprenticeship with KPMG on their 360 degree programme. I am learning about all aspects of the business and then I will get to choose which area to specialise in, whilst gaining a professional qualification.

40

Businesses operate in a competitive, dynamic environment. Our team is made up of teachers with industry experience who bring their knowledge of employment to the classroom to enhance your understanding of major topical issues and the ways in which businesses respond. QMC has links with several businesses in the local area and organises useful visits and trips to help you understand the world of work.

Business Education Every day you will come into contact with the business world, for example, when buying your lunch or working part-time. Business Studies will help you understand this world by looking at how businesses are created, develop, grow, survive crises and perhaps eventually decline. It focuses on people whose skills affect this process and uses theory to analyse the cause and effects of different management approaches. Business A Level In Business you will learn about topics such as: finance, marketing, operations, people at work and the economy. You will experience a range of learning methods such as using case studies on specific companies (individual and group work), role play, PowerPoint presentations and general theory work. A structured series of activities will test your understanding of the material covered. Business Studies is a very broad subject with paths which complement many other areas of study. There will be the opportunity to benefit from guest speakers and visits to help you apply theory to real life business contexts. Business Level 3 Extended Diploma This two year course is particularly suited to those who like practical learning and assessment through coursework. This is a work-related course designed to develop awareness of skills required in a business environment. You will experience a range of learning and assessment methods from role play to work experience. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations,

BUSINESS EDUCATION activities and demands. The course covers business areas such as: marketing, human resources and retailing. There will be the opportunity to participate in a visit as part of the course. Business Level 3 Single Diploma The CTEC Level 3 Certificate offers a specialist business qualification with a vocational focus which can broaden a learner’s programme of study. Topics studied include accountancy, marketing and the business environment. Students gain credits for completed coursework modules. The CTEC Level 3 Certificate is equivalent to half an A Level. The CTEC Level 3 Introductory Diploma is a progression route from the Certificate. Learners study three modules in Retail Management, Career Development and Business Communication to achieve the qualification which is equivalent to one A Level. Economics A Level The key idea in the study of Economics is the scarcity of the world’s resources. These resources are used to produce the goods and services we consume. Economics is a social science, which studies the choices that we, as individuals and as a society, have to make because of the scarcity of these resources. The outcomes of these decisions have an enormous impact on us, our society and the environment. The course is designed to give you a better understanding of the world and most of the material will deal with contemporary issues

such as austerity and rising and falling prices, the steel industry, the Euro crisis, the near collapse of the banking system and the UK productivity gap. Economics is divided into two broad units: microeconomics (the study of decision making at the level of the individual consumer and firm); and macroeconomics (‘the big picture’ of how the economy as a whole operates). During the first year some of the content of Economics will contain issues which you will have studied in GCSE subjects like Geography (trade and development), Business Studies (demand and markets), Science (the environment) and History (empires and the causes of wars).

Our culture and history have been shaped by literature and language for hundreds of years. Through lessons, clinics, lunchtime courses, support workshops and trips we will show you how to read, analyse and write about this rich heritage.

English Language A Level A Level English Language is a subject which is very different from GCSE English. At university level this subject is usually described as ‘Linguistics’. Through wide reading, writing, analytical and investigative work you will gain a greater awareness of the way language is used in a variety of contexts. The course will involve a significant amount of reading, including texts from as far back as 1600, as well as close analytical work, using technical terminology (such as grammatical descriptions) for the analysis of many different kinds of speech and writing. You will study regional and social dialects of English, language and occupation, language and gender, language and ethnicity, English throughout the world and language change. Attitudes to different varieties of language are a key part of the course. You need to be curious, open-minded and willing to adopt new and rigorous ways of studying the language you use every day. (Please note that English Language is not a creative writing course.) English Literature A Level You will study a range of literature from different periods covering prose, poetry and plays (including Shakespeare). You will study eight books over two years. Through this course you will gain a wider understanding of the range of Literature that has been written both in this country and in other Englishspeaking countries. Most of the learning takes place through class activities, discussions, independent research and essay writing.

ENGLISH

English Literature is a highly valued qualification for almost every field of study in Higher Education, and fits well with almost any combination of A Level subjects. It is also a desirable qualification for employment because of the range of communication skills you develop during the course. Further English (enrichment) This is an enrichment course for students in their second year of studying A Level English Literature. GEOGRAPHY, SOCIOLOGY AND LAW

Geography, Sociology & Law These distinct and complementary subjects enable you to appreciate the complexity and diversity of social situations from ancient times to the modern day. You will assess the merits of competing theories and explanations and your understanding will be enhanced by our links with highly renowned academics.

LEVEL 3 COURSES

Applied Criminology Level 3 Single Diploma This exciting course is designed to provide students with an understanding of criminology and includes elements of Psychology, Law and Sociology that complement studies in humanities. Students on the course will study different types of crimes and will look at the role of technology and how it has contributed to the creation of new crimes, e.g, cybercrimes. Students will also have the opportunity to investigate how the media can play a part in societal stereotypes of criminals as well as the ongoing problems of fear of crime. Students will explore criminal behaviour as well as social policy and methods of punishment, e.g, does prison work? Geography A Level This stimulating and flexible course gives students the opportunity to engage with the relationship of human populations to each other over space and time, study the relationship between human populations with their physical environment at a variety of scales from the local to the global, and consider their own role in relation to themes and issues being studied. The specification follows an issues and impacts approach to contemporary Geography that is suitable for all students. Geography also involves a range of skills and outside work which appeals to many students. Sociology A Level The world over, people wear much or little jewellery, have many or few children, value or shun the elderly, are peaceful or aggressive, enjoy different kinds of art and music and hold different religious beliefs. While people may be

GEOGRAPHY, SOCIOLOGY AND LAW biologically the same, they differ in their tastes, behaviours and beliefs. The capacity for such startling differences is human culture; the study of how people live is the discipline of Sociology. Sociology is the systematic study of how human societies shape the lives of the people who live in them and how people shape the cultures they live in. People have created cultures and subcultures that are complex, fascinating and utterly different. Within these cultures, individuals are able to create identities which may emphasise their difference from others. This course will appeal to students who are interested in exploring the complex nature of study and the differing life chances that exist between individuals as a result of their social class, gender, ethnicity, sexuality and religion.

Sociology works well with the other social science/humanities subjects such as Politics, Economics, Geography and History.

My strongest subjects are Criminology and Law. I enjoy them both and they are more interesting and fascinating than I ever imagined. I’ve been involved in different activities and have taken part in many trips, visits and speeches. The favourite ones were the visit to the Magistrates’ Court and the speeches by ex-prisoners. I’ve gained a better idea of the work of a lawyer and also an overall picture of the process of the courts. There is so much to learn from everyone here. I came here with more questions than answers, terrified by a new beginning and stressed. I’m already a new person with a clear view of my future, so many new friends and experiences that I know will help. QMC is what I needed in order to get the answers for my future and I now have more confidence and skills to achieve my goals. After College I’m hoping to continue to study law at university.

DID YOU KNOW? Each year QMC IT students secure Higher Apprenticeships with top companies such as Vodafone, Visa, Barracuda and CGI.

I like that some lessons involve research and assignments and that others involve practical sessions such as building a computer from preselected components. QMC teachers are knowledgeable subject specialists who are more like mentors; yes they teach you what to do but they also allow you to learn through a trial-anderror system. This has helped me to keep my mind active and really supports the learning process. Whether it be subject related or information regarding future choices such as university or apprenticeships there is always support and help at QMC. Tutors don’t push you to follow a particular pathway, they simply provide relevant information regarding all of the options to help you make an informed decision about your future. I now aim to start an apprenticeship at Microsoft exploring data and AI programming and management.

MODERN LANGUAGES

If you are interested in languages and communication, and enjoy learning about other cultures and ways of life, then Modern Foreign Language (MFL) courses could be an enjoyable part of your studies. Similarly, if you are interested in the business world, in travel or tourism, or in journalism and the media, then you are also likely to find the courses appropriate. There are a number of options in the courses where you can choose a topic to suit your interests. Whether you want to use the language for work, further study, training or leisure, these courses will equip you with the necessary skills and knowledge. Many of our students study more than one language and a large number continue languages at university.

EDWARD HOWARD-JONES Perins School

Russian was definitely my favourite subject to study at QMC; the feeling of progression I got from learning a completely new language was great. My absolute favourite thing about QMC is the access given to additional guidance whenever needed. The support network is wonderful, and the staff are great to interact with. There was a massive amount of help provided by my teacher and tutor, through extra lunchtime sessions throughout my study periods. There is a massive independent aspect to college which I found liberating when first starting. I soon developed a level of self-discipline as although there’s a lot more freedom and independence you have to work hard too. I am now at the University of Cambridge studying Modern and Medieval Languages and Cultures, focussing on Russian and Italian.

50

French, German and Spanish A Level

Modern

Languages Every language you learn will open doors to a world of exciting opportunities, allow you to tap into new networks, and enrich your education. QMC offers one of the widest ranges of language courses in the UK, from beginners’ courses to A levels. All lessons are planned to ensure that you benefit from tuition that focuses on your individual needs and interests, the rewards of which are demonstrated in our outstanding results.

A broad range of topics are studied during the course, including: French: Multicultural France; social problems and changing trends; crime and rehabilitation; politics and the history of demonstration; French cinema and music; cultural heritage and history; cyber-society German: Immigration, integration and racism; youth culture fashion and trends; digital advances; social trends and modern families; Germany and the EU; politics and youth; art and architecture Spanish: Regional identity, cultural life and heritage, social change, equal rights and traditional values; monarchies, republics and dictatorships; popular movements.

MODERN LANGUAGES There are two written papers (2 hours 30 minutes and 2 hours) testing listening, reading and translation and two essays on French, German or Spanish film/ literature. There is also a speaking test lasting approximately 30 minutes in which you discuss an issue studied during the course and your findings from your individual research project. Italian and Russian A Level If you enjoyed foreign languages at secondary school but were unable to study the particular language you wanted, or if you wish to take up an entirely new language to A Level, then you can opt for a ‘Fast Track’ course. During the first year of these courses you will progress rapidly through the basics of the language. In the second year the range of activities and areas of study will mirror those described above for the post-GCSE courses. In order to achieve this you will have additional support and guidance sessions to help you develop your language skills. In order to enrol on Fast Track courses you must have studied a language at GCSE and achieved at least a grade 6. Further Opportunities Students who speak languages other than English fluently may wish to take an A Level qualification in this language with practical support from the Modern Foreign Languages department. Please discuss your language requirements with the Head of Modern Foreign Languages.

DID YOU KNOW? You can also study a Beginners Language, including German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish, via the enrichment programme.

HISTORY, PHILOSOPHY AND POLITICS

KIAN BEAUMONT Fort Hill Community School

I chose QMC because it offered the option to study specified History courses. Everyone I spoke to at Open Evening was very helpful and from the beginning it was clear that if I ever needed support I could easily seek it. My most enjoyable subject is History. My teacher is great and the lessons are never repetitive; we constantly develop skills and we get to cover lots of different types of material. My favourite thing about QMC is the space; there’s room for everyone to study and use laptops to do their work. The amazing teachers really help to push you to your full potential. My History teacher really supported me in learning how to change my writing style to achieve more marks in my essays. This helped me to become more confident within myself and my capabilities. My experience has been challenging but very enjoyable.

52

History Philosophy & Politics These subjects offer new ways to see, think about, and understand the world. How did our world come to be the way it is? How is the country run, and how should it be run? Can we actually know anything about the world!? How can we test the claims and arguments made by other people?

Whether studying an ancient Roman document, or the very latest developments in Politics, our students become highly skilled in analysing information and making connections. In presenting a case for a particular understanding of a historical period, or a particular ethical position in Philosophy, our students learn to argue intelligently, in essays and in discussion. We help students to ask excellent questions, from Philosophical enquiries into what exists, to thoughts about which sources to trust most in History. Philosophy, Religion and Ethics A Level

WHO AM I? WHAT CAN I KNOW? WHAT SHOULD I DO? These questions cover the human condition – in other words, Philosophy concerns what it is to be human.

HISTORY, PHILOSOPHY AND POLITICS Its main tool is argument. This is a highly analytical and critical subject. Philosophers don’t just believe things, they argue for them. Philosophical theories are very profound, abstract and go “to the heart” of the debate. In addition, you will study key aspects of the Buddhist tradition. Buddhism is also known as eastern philosophy. As a religion, it is not so much concerned with questions about God, but about developing an enlightened way of life. Politics A Level How does the UK political system work? Does it work!? How could it be improved? What are the ‘big ideas’ of politics – from conservatism to feminism, and from liberalism to communism? How is American politics different to British? Politics is a highly topical and relevant course, in which you will discover where you stand on a wide range of very important issues. Our students highly value the in-house booklets we provide and very much enjoy the political simulation opportunities we create for students to experience the political world first-hand, such as a mock Parliament. History A Level

In PRE, you’ll study the work of some of the world’s greatest thinkers, as we seek answers to these big questions. You’ll ask questions, argue, try out ideas and generally wonder whether you can justify the beliefs you have. Philosophy, Religion and Ethics will make you think: it is likely to make your brain hurt, and you may never see the world in quite the same way again!

We offer a choice of three different History courses: Modern History: the British Empire, the Cold War and the Position of Women 1791-1918 Early Modern/Medieval History: the Crusades, Religious Conflict c1529-1570 and Exploration and Discovery 1445-1545

Ancient History: Sparta and the Ancient Greek world and the Roman Emperors All three provide an equally respected A Level at the end of the course. The courses differ in assessment and content. In terms of assessment, Ancient History has no coursework, whereas coursework constitutes 20% of the marks in Early Modern History and Modern History. However, you should make your choice largely on the basis of which countries or periods you most want to study. Some students like to focus on areas where they feel familiar - perhaps because they have studied them at GCSE. Others want a change or a new challenge. The choice is yours!

MATHEMATICS

Mathematics SINÉAD CORBETT Bishop Challoner

I really enjoy studying Maths at QMC. The teachers are passionate about the subject and don’t just teach the syllabus; they’re happy for us to explore other interesting mathematical facts too. They have plenty of time to spend with you individually and it feels like I’m studying for enjoyment, not just for qualifications. There are many opportunities to attend drop-in support sessions outside of timetabled lessons. Visiting speakers, who are experts in their field, also come in to talk about different aspects of maths in a professional sense which I’ve found to be very educational. The subjects I chose have been thoroughly fascinating, but they’ve also pushed me to work hard. I’ve made new friends and become more independent. QMC has definitely helped me grow and develop as a person.

There is no doubt that mathematics is important for its applications in virtually every field of study, whether it be in the sciences, business, sport or medicine, but hopefully you will also enjoy studying mathematics for its own sake and come to appreciate its power and diversity. In order to solve problems in the real world, we often begin by translating the problem into mathematical equations to give us a clearer appreciation of the underlying aspects of the problem. We then solve the problem using mathematics and use our findings to make predictions of what will happen in future circumstances. After all, where else can you solve an infinite number of problems in one go!

Mathematics A Level This two-year course is highly valued by universities and businesses alike. It will help you to develop the analytical and problem-solving skills employers need. Building on your GCSE algebra skills, you will learn how to interpret information and prove important results, using mathematical equations to model real-world situations. A combination of pure and applied mathematics will help you to think logically and make accurate observations. Maths is critical to understanding science and sits well alongside any combination of A level subjects. During the first year you will study graphs and functions, calculus and proof. Alongside this pure maths, you’ll meet some practical applications in statistics and mechanics. The second year follows on, with algebra again making up two-thirds of the course and applied maths providing the rest. Exams will assess your problem-solving skills. The statistical element looks at how to analyse data and draw conclusions about what it tells us. It covers correlation, probability and different distributions. Mechanics involves forces and motion, using equations to model practical situations and predict how an object will move. Mathematics (Core) Core Maths is an additional one year course to support A levels with a significant mathematical content. Building on GCSE skills but with a focus on practical problem-solving, it is particularly useful for science students and anyone studying A levels that will involve analysing data. Many A level courses now include a greater emphasis on mathematical skills and

MATHEMATICS understanding statistical calculations. The course covers data analysis, personal finance and mathematical modelling. It will explore statistical measures and probability, including the normal distribution, applying these tools to predict outcomes and make sensible estimates about everyday situations based on limited data. The course will sit alongside your A levels, boosting your credentials and giving you additional UCAS points. It is a highly valued qualification, recognised by universities and employers, equivalent to 40% of a full A level. Mathematics (Double) A Level This course is for students who want to delve into mathematics and leads to two A levels, in Mathematics and Further Maths. Again, the course comprises of pure and applied maths and is especially suitable for those who wish to go on to study a maths-related course at university, such as Economics, Finance or STEM. The course is fast-paced and highly rewarding for those who like a challenge. The pure maths element embraces matrices, complex numbers and differential equations. The applied maths component covers mechanics topics including energy, collisions and circular motion, with discrete maths exploring optimisation, game theory and abstract algebra.

MEDIA AND FILM

Media Studies A Level

Media

and film EVIE BARRETT Aldworth School

All of my subjects are as enjoyable as they are challenging. I had never studied Media before and have found it to be really interesting and thought provoking. The visiting speakers help us to see how media theories can be applied to real-life situations and I found the talk by Google particularly fascinating. The trip to the British Film Institute was very helpful and I’m really looking forward to going on the trip to L.A! The learning environment is very different at College, as you have to be self-motivated and willing to put the effort in to succeed. You are given time during the week to improve your own learning and I’ve found these study periods to be really useful. The teachers at College support you with any problems and help you to do your best. I’ve met so many new friends here and found a passion for journalism, combining my two favourite subjects - English and Media.

Media and film both play a vital role in contemporary society. It is essential that young people possess the tools to understand and analyse the role of the (fake) media and the huge impact it has on their thinking, behaviour and other elements of their lives. We are supported by a wealth of technical expertise and industry-standard equipment which enables our students to excel in national competitions. Whether you prefer practical work or theoretical exploration, the department has something to offer any individual who is driven to explore the media in greater depth.

We live in a world of competing messages, with many of these circulating via the interconnected industries that we commonly call ‘the media’. Making sense of these messages, and the ideologies contained therein, is vital if we wish to fully understand the world in which we live and possess the ability to make sensible and informed decisions. Media Studies is an academic discipline that helps people to navigate today’s media-saturated landscape by exploring the content, history and cultural impact of various media forms. As a student, you will do this by examining the relationship between text, audience and industry and exploring many of the debates surrounding the nature of that relationship. The coursework element will involve students being tasked with creating practical pieces for their portfolio to produce short films, digital magazine spreads or 2-D computer games. Media Studies Level 3 Extended Diploma This is a rigorous and intensive course which prepares students for a practical media production or theory based degree at university and can provide pathways in to the industry. Students gain an insight into the structure of the media industry with practical knowledge of how professionals work to produce media texts for the film and print industries and create 2-D computer games. You will develop a solid grounding in ways to analyse, research, plan and produce media products. Furthermore you will learn about the way in which the Creative Industries

MEDIA AND FILM are structured and the professional roles available within these industries. You will learn about the research methodologies that producers of media products use in order to identify the target audience for their products, create proposals and pitch their ideas. Additionally, you will learn how to use verbal and non-verbal communication to present your research results, ideas and work in a professional manner. The practical production units will develop your skills in lens based media, image manipulation and audio visual editing in order for you to complete a two year industry standard portfolio. There are two mandatory, external exam units in each year which will test your knowledge on both your industry understanding and practical skills. You will be expected to work both in groups and individually on specific units. Media Studies Level 3 Single Diploma This new course is very much based on the layout of the Extended Diploma but has a maximum of four units only, one of which will be a mandatory unit based on the media industry with the other three units made up of filming, game design and digital-magazine spread components. Film Studies A Level Film is quite possibly the most powerful and ubiquitous media form that has ever existed. However, despite what some people think, film is not merely a popular form of entertainment. While many works may be placed in this category, other films often come closer to status of art. It should also be remembered that the film industry is just that, an industry: a business

 and more – see page 18 with the primary goal of making money. While Hollywood is, in many ways, at the forefront of this, most national cinemas have their own equivalent. Regardless of whether you prefer high-budget, low-brow Hollywood blockbusters or Scandinavian art cinema, any film can, and should, be studied. Film Studies is an academic discipline that examines the form, content, historical, cultural and economic aspects of cinema. Taking Film Studies will help you to explore cinema as an audio-visual form of creative expression and to understand the important relationships between the production, distribution and consumption of films.

LEVEL 3 COURSES

PSYCHOLOGY AND HEALTH & SOCIAL CARE

Psychology A Level Psychology challenges how students think about themselves and the decisions they make about their lives. It covers topics such as memory, responses to authority, responses to people in need, sleep patterns, causes of psychopathy, etc. It allows us to consider the motives of others, to empathise with others and to understand how a wide variety of treatments and therapies can play a significant part in people’s lives. Understanding how different cultures, social groups and families can lead to particular behaviour also adds an awareness of different values and expectations which affect us and this will help you to understand both the similarities and differences which make the world a very interesting place to be in, within a scientific, research based environment. Psychology is the science of the mind and is taught as a science subject. It is relevant to a wide variety of job fields, including Health, Police, Social Work, Teaching as well

as Advertising, Sales and Marketing and should be attractive to a very wide audience. In the classroom, participation and opinion is invited and encouraged and therefore this subject would appeal to those who are particularly interested in people, in current affairs and facilitating debate about a wide variety of topics. We offer the opportunity for students to join a student led psychology group or to pursue an additional enrichment in either an Extended Project Qualification where the possibility to conduct a piece of investigative research may be realised, or to join a non-examined forensic psychology group with a series of guest speakers and engaging group activities. You will study the course for two years and will sit three exams at the end in order to gain an A Level qualification. This is an examined subject with no coursework.

MEGAN BENNETT The Costello School I chose QMC because it is a very good college with enthusiastic teachers and a great learning environment. There was no reason for me to travel elsewhere. I enjoy all of my subjects but my favourite has to be Psychology. There are so many different aspects to it and it relates to real life and things happening right now! There are opportunities to attend trips and talks to help with learning. I particularly enjoyed the trip to the mental health hospital and museum and found it interesting and thought provoking, leading me to consider mental health issues and the treatment of them in an entirely different way. Other trips and talks have also been useful and helped with practical understanding of the topics covered in class. My experience at QMC so far has been new, interesting, different, fulfilling, motivating and full of hard work, but also a lot of fun!

Biology A Level

Chemistry A Level

Biology is the study of life and living processes and it is never far from the headlines. Stem-cell research has the potential to revolutionise modern medicine, the use of genetically modified crops could help feed the planet and deforestation could dramatically alter the world’s ecosystems, but to truly understand the implications these changes could have on our lives; Biology is key. Whether you are interested in the discoveries of the Human Genome Project, the implications of the obesity epidemic or even whether life exists elsewhere in the universe, Biology is the course for you. Biologists are concerned with all these issues and their skills are vital when investigating the living world around us.

Chemistry is a fascinating subject that greatly impacts almost every aspect of modern society and continues to revolutionise the way we live. Starting with the idea of subatomic particles, chemistry develops an understanding of how things around us – and inside us – work at a molecular level. This allows the design and production of medicines, fuels, sophisticated materials, agricultural chemicals, dyes, cosmetics, etc. Chemistry also allows us to understand how processes in the atmosphere, oceans, soil, and our own bodies function, enabling us to avoid damaging those systems or to intervene in a helpful way when problems are detected. It is chemistry that determines the nature of unknown substances, or their concentrations – vital in tackling drug smuggling, solving crime or tracking down sources of toxic pollution. Modern chemists take a leading role in providing the solutions for tomorrow’s needs, whether in terms of energy demands, food production, environmental protection, technological developments, or just a really beautiful new shade of green for dying fabric!

Applied Science Level 3 Extended/Single Diploma This vocational course includes wide-ranging, investigative and academic study of advanced level Biology, Chemistry and Physics and includes Practical Laboratory Techniques and Experience.

SCIENCE Physics A Level Physics is the study of EVERYTHING! From the origin of the Universe itself to the tiny structure of the fundamental particles it consists of; the entire history of time and space! It is often known as the fundamental science, the branch that studies the natural phenomena of the Universe and tries to determine the laws that govern our lives. If this all sounds a bit scary and too big to handle, don’t worry, you are surrounded by Physics and you already use Physics every day. Physics allows us to communicate wirelessly, to play sports, to see the world. Whilst theoretical Physicists ask (and try to answer) the really big questions such as; “How did the Universe begin?” and “How does the sun keep shining?” other Physicists apply their understanding to solve problems. They develop new forms of energy production and design new medical scanners and radiotherapy treatments for cancer. No matter what interests you have, there is an area of Physics for you. Electronics A Level Electronics is used in communication and control systems and virtually every gadget in our lives has an electronic component. From the smart phone in your pocket, the TV in your home, the giant servers storing the entire content of the internet, to the satellite orbiting the earth relaying signals between them all; Electronics makes it possible. This electronics course will enable you to appreciate how many problems in society can be tackled by the application of the scientific ideas from the field of electronics, while the large amount of practical work 22 68

will enable you to solve some of these problems for yourself, using engineering processes. Computer Science A Level Our 21st century world is a dynamic and ever-changing place where we can now stream high definition movies to our smartphones, video chat with friends and relatives on the other side of the planet and store huge amounts of music in the cloud! We can design cars using a laptop, use voice control to browse the internet, even do our banking online at home in our pyjamas. All of these advances are made possible because of the work of computer scientists. Computer Science is the course that will help you develop the fundamental skills and understanding required to make sense of our digital age, write your own programs and apps and perhaps imagine the technology that is yet to come! We offer a generous programme of enrichment activities, with opportunities to work alongside professional scientists and engineers. Strong links also exist with a number of universities, enabling lab visits and other practical projects.

I really enjoy all of my subjects but would say that my favourite is Biology because I find it the most interesting, especially when learning about the human body and life processes. I really liked the Biology trip to Marwell Zoo where we learned about the role of zoos in conservation and I also liked the ‘Operating Theatre Live’ and ‘Emergency Care in the Streets’ events at College that gave me an insight into the medical profession. After going to other open days, I found that none of the other colleges had such in depth, inside knowledge about what a successful medicine application requires. QMC also stood out to me because of the support available for getting work experience. Thanks to the College I was able to secure work experience at North Hampshire Hospital, which is normally hard to come by. So far, my experience at QMC has been great. I’ve met some amazing people, started some great courses and had loads of help and support.

I attended the QMC Open Evening and was really impressed. The staff came across as really passionate about their subject and they also had the strongest sports department of all the other colleges in the area. The atmosphere is more relaxed than school and you are treated like an adult. The staff always had time for me, it’s a more independent style of education but with the safety net of a Personal Tutor who is also one of your teachers. I’ve had all of the support I needed to push my boundaries and achieve my potential. I liked the flexibility to manage my own time, and to take advantage of the great sports facilities and opportunities. Alongside my Extended Diploma sports course I was also able to complete Sports Leadership and Fitness Instructor enrichment courses that led to additional qualifications. Education at QMC is more than just getting your grades. It’s an experience that involves hard work, but get stuck in and you will have an amazing time. 73

My world was shattered when I first started College as I had failed my Maths GCSE and had to start on a Level 2 programme whilst re-taking it. All credit to the great teachers who helped me to pass my GCSE within just 6 weeks! Throughout my time at College they boosted my interest in education and inspired me to do well. I went on to study Law and Business at Level 3 where I achieved Distinction* in both subjects. I liked the fact I was able to combine the applied courses with studying Russian A Level and was really happy to secure an A grade. I’m now studying Criminology with Forensic Studies at Portsmouth University and am well prepared for the future.

I’m really pleased how I can now talk in front of others and do presentations when we are completing topic work. Winning the LA Nutt Memorial Award was a huge success for me. It’s an award where students are nominated by staff for their outstanding achievement within College. I was very proud to have won it because it is based on academic achievement, attitude, personal attributes and the ability to support others within the class. I’m happy to be continuing at QMC for another year. I’m going to be studying Performing arts and know that the confidence I’ve gained so far at College will help me to do so.

The Foundation Learning Progression Course

SAPPHIRE TAYLOR Dove House School Academy

This year I have been working within the Foundation Learning Department. Throughout this year I have really enjoyed the practical elements of the subjects and I have been able to build upon skills I already had within certain subjects. This year has given me the chance to further develop those skills and to gain a greater understanding within these topics. Staff at QMC have allowed me to be independent and focus on my own learning. However, they have also been there to support me when required. This has enabled me to continue to develop within education and help me become more confident at College. This has helped me to be able to move on to the next level showing me I am able to push myself and have the confidence to try new challenges. Next year I am moving on to the Level 1 Progression course.

This year I have been studying with the Foundation Learning Department where I have really enjoyed Maths, English, Science and swimming. Staff at QMC have helped me to know what I am supposed to be doing and where I am supposed to be, keeping me focused on my work and helping me to progress. Within lessons I enjoy the positive learning environment alongside being focused on the work we are completing. Outside of the classroom I have made new friends as well as keeping friends that went to the same school as me. One of the things we have really enjoyed doing together is looking after the garden and growing lots of different vegetables from seed. Next year I will continue to work within the Foundation Learning Department, developing my skills and continuing to build my confidence.
