Welcome to Queen Mary Students’ Union

T

his guide will act as your first point of reference to Queen Mary Students’ Union (QMSU). The following pages are a guide to everything that makes up your Students’ Union. The Students’ Union has two main areas on the Mile End Campus that are available to you: The Blomelely Centre is where all your sabbatical officers and Membership Services staff are based. Here, you can come in to see us so that we can help with areas such as academic advice, sports and societies, media and publications, and general student welfare. Your main information point is also situated here, so if you come to the reception you can buy tickets to all events, NUS extra and student Oyster cards, and ask any questions you may have. The health and fitness centre, Qmotion, and your union bar, Drapers bar, make up your second main area. They can be found on Bancroft Road, which is on the west side of campus. In addition to this, QMSU has a variety of other facilities to offer on campus. These

4 qmsu.org

include our two shops - The Village Shop, which is located next to the Blomeley Centre, and Infusion, which can be found next to Drapers bar. We also have Ground, which is a Costa Coffee shop. As well as an array of coffees, sandwiches, and snacks, there are some pool tables and comfy seating. This is located behind the main library. Furthermore, we are lucky enough to have a second site down in Whitechapel, the home of the Barts and the London Association students - our medics and dentists. The BLSA building is located here, which holds another students’ union bar, The Griff Inn, a coffee clinic, and the newly refurbished BLSA common room. It is an exciting time to be a Queen Mary student given all the excellent facilities we have to offer. Qmotion and Drapers bar are both state-of-the-art amenities rivalling the best around the country. Being a Fresher is an incredible experience. Enjoy your time at Queen Mary and make the most of it. Good luck!

How Queen Mary Students’ Union Works

T

he Union has a brand new structure for the 2009-2010 academic year. Previously the union ran monthly general meetings where students could put forward proposals, such as a political stance or to change to the union itself. To make sure the Union runs as efficiently as possibe, from the beginning of September 2009, the Union will have council meetings, which any student can attend but will be predominantly populated by elected council members. As you can see from the diagram to the right, the student council is made up of 36 elected students – 18 from a Mile End Campus board and 18 from a BLSA (medical and dental students) campus board. Any student can feed into these boards and effect change by attending working groups or talking to elected students. Your Sabbatical Officer Team Over the following five pages, you’ll be able to see your Sabbatical Officer Team. These students are selected in the Union Elections which take place at the beginning of the second term of the academic year. They take a year out of studying to work full-time for QMSU, representing you to make sure the Students’ Union is doing everything in students’ interests. Don’t hesitate to give them a call or send them an email – using the contact details over the next five pages – if you have any questions.

ello everyone and welcome to Queen Mary. My name is Anna Hiscocks and I am the Vice President Education, Representation and Welfare in the Students’ Union. I am responsible for your educational needs, working with the departments and the college to make sure you are receiving the best educational support available. At Queen Mary we have a successful Course Representative system, where students have the opportunity to voice their concerns and make a difference. The Students’ Union is a representative organisation. I oversee and facilitate the elections and ensure that the Union is truly democratic. In addition to this I represent the student body in a number of college committees. However it is you as a student that makes the Students’ Union what it is. We need your support and participation to guide us in the right direction in making sure we meet all the student needs. The more we speak to you, the better we can be, it is YOUR union. The welfare of students at Queen Mary is a high priority and this university offers some of the best services to support your needs whether it has to do with finance, accommodation or health. I am here to guide you the most suitable service, so please feel free to contact me over any concern you may have. I will look forward to meeting you this year.

I

’m Sam Cunningham and I’ll be your Vice President of Communications for the coming year. I’ve just completed my first year in this role so will be carrying a year of experience with me this term. I am a graduate of English. My main roles are running the student monthly magazine – Cub – and fortnightly newspaper – QMessenger. These publications are entirely student-run, so I need your help and urge anyone to get involved. If you’re interested in any aspect of journalism or the production process, don’t hesitate to let me know at the above email address. I will also be helping to maintain the new Students’ Union website, www.qmsu. org, working with all of the other SU staff and your other Sabbatical Officers. This is a brand new venture for 2009. For the first time we will have a full-time member of staff running the website in addition to making sure the other communication channels of the SU work effectively. Look out for regular copies of Cub and QMessenger on campus during term time. These can be found in all the QMSU outlets – Drapers, Qmotion, Ground, and The Village Shop – and in the Library. I hope you have a fantastic year and wish you the best of luck.

rapers bar is Queen Mary’s main bar in the heart of the Students’ Union. Drapers bar has recently been subject to a huge refurbishment project along with the redevelopment of the Students’ Union building on Bancroft Road. The £4,000,000 project has resulted in one of the best student venues in the country which allows us to provide you with the best in student entertainment. Our stunning bar incorporates fresh homemade food, gourmet burgers, ground coffee, smoothies and chilled out environment by day. By night the place transforms into a stylish student bar and club incorporating

www.qmsu.org Entertainments

T

he majority of entertainments QMSU provides are on campus at drapers bar. Our regular favourites including Hail Mary and flirt! will be joined this year by a whole host of new and improved events. Our large variety of drinks promotions, DJs, live PAs and music styles ensure we cater for everyone’s taste. To add some variety we use some external venues to put on some of our events, including London’s infamous Pressure Cooker at some of London’s top venues. To make your student experience the best it can be we go all out during Freshers’ Week putting on events at the world-famous Fabric and Ministry of Sound, incorporating the UKs best DJs all for bargain entry prices. This means that venues usually out of the average students’ price range are accessible courtesy of Queen Mary Students’ Union.

All profits made from QMSU entertainments and drapers bar goes back to you, the student. Monies made help fund your clubs and societies, the welfare department, academic advice, student campaigns, volunteering and every other part of the Students’ Union. By attending an event, buying a drink at the bar, or having lunch in drapers you are helping fund everything the Students’ Union provides for you, the students. Look out for the Queen Mary Students’ Union logo on events flyers, posters and emails to make sure they are bonafide Queen Mary events and to make sure you don’t get ripped off. You can check out all our events on our website www.qmsu.org and on our facebook group Queen Mary Freshers / QMUL / QMSU QM 2009 - 2010. We also provide upto-the-minute information on events, free entry, drinks vouchers and Q Jump through QMSU text alerts, which you can sign up for on the website.

Student Media

T

here are a number of ways you can get involved with student media at QMSU. We have a regular newspaper and magazine, an up-andcoming radio station, and – new this year – the chance to practice your TV broadcasting skills with the chance to cover video news stories on our brand new website. Cub is QMSU’s student monthly magazine, run by students for students. This glossy lifestyle magazine provides your monthly dose of what’s going on in and around London and the college, as well as opinions, previews, reviews, celebrity interviews, and student-fashion. QMessenger is QMSU’s fortnightly newspaper, bringing you all the latest news and sports surrounding Queen Mary during term time as well as product reviews and Sudoku and Crosswords. You can view every issue of Cub and QMesenger online at their respective websites www.cubmagazine.co.uk or www.qmessenger.co.uk. Copies of both publications can also be found at the library and all of the QMSU outlets: the Drapers bar and Qmotion reception, Ground, The Village Shop, and the Blomeley Centre. You can get involved at every level of the production process, including writing, photography, design and layout, proofing and editing. Cub and QMessenger aim to keep up with what’s going on in students’ lives and is always open to new ideas and influences. If you’d like to get involved, email editor@cubmagazine.co.uk or editor@qmessenger.co.uk.

Barts and the London Student Association

I

f you were to look at a dictionary, after removing layers of dust you would find the following meaning of for the word Association: A group of people who are united in a single organisation for a particular purpose. The Barts and The London Students’ Association, although part of Queen Mary Students Association, is here especially for medical and dental students. As a student here at BL you are automatically a member of the Association and of Queen Mary Students Union (QMSU), so you get the best of both worlds in terms of facilities and support. The Association Building is like a Tardis, tiny on the outside, but packed full with useful facilities on the inside. On the

ground floor is the Student Bar the Griffinn. This friendly, student staffed bar is where you can come after a hard day of lectures or ward work. Most of the evening events during Freshers Fortnight will happen here, and Wednesday sports nights throughout the year are legendary at the Association. The prices are student friendly for London and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. We have some new branded nights at Griffinn being launched this year, so round up the troops and head down to

www.qmsu.org/blsa Griffinn for some awesome quality nights! There is The Coffee Clinic on the first floor which offers: »»

Bean to Cup Coffee

»»

A range of Barts and The London Students’ Association Clothing

Also on the first floor is the Common Room, used for all kinds of meetings, relaxation and a chance to look at your e-mails. The top floor of the Association holds 3

main rooms. The main room is the Clubs and Resources room, used in the mostly for meetings but also with a large number of computer terminals. The Welfare Office (which has surgery hours, see the BL Freshers Guide for more details) is open at any time if needed, and is staffed by student councilors, and The President’s Office. This should be staffed daily from 9-5, if you need any support. There are many so other parts to the Association, and we could fill an entire handbook with what’s on offer, so keep a look out for the BL handbook and please come down to visit us or just get in touch with the President if you need any more information. Visit www.bartslondon.com for more information or to find out what’s going on at BLSA.

Course Representatives

C

ourse Representatives (Course Reps) are an elected group of students who represent the students on their course. They tackle educational issues working with the Students’ Union, their Department and the College. They are an integral part of the college system and act as representatives who voice and champion the concerns of students. Course Reps are highly regarded and rewarded for their participation,

and have a strong relationship with their Heads of Departments. They receive a certificate of contribution awarded at the lavish Drapers Hall in the City of London and also get to discuss student issues with the Principal. In addition to that, Course Reps gain a high number of transferable skills which makes them more attractable in the job market. To find out more about the Course Rep roles, functions and how to become one, please check out: www. qmsu.org or contact Anna Hiscocks on vpwelfare@qmsu.org or 02078828039.
