Direct selling is a legitimate business model that has been around for decades, offering individuals the opportunity to sell products or services directly to consumers without the need for a physical storefront. Unfortunately, direct selling often gets wrongly associated with pyramid schemes, which are illegal and unsustainable business models that rely on recruiting new members instead of selling products. The two are fundamentally different in terms of their structure, legality, and sustainability. Understanding these differences is important for anyone considering a career in direct selling.

The direct selling industry has been continuously evolving. The industry has worked diligently to update its business model, adopting new technologies to streamline operations and maximise the success of its distributors.

Year after year, QNET and other companies have taken a more proactive approach towards regulation, working alongside policymakers to introduce stronger consumer protection laws and guidelines. It is important to understand that direct selling is not a get-rich-quick scheme. It is a tough business, one that requires real time and effort. Here are some ways you can tell a genuine direct selling business from a pyramid scheme.

• Direct selling companies, unlike pyramid schemes, deliver high-quality, legitimate products and services and dedicate their resources to finding consumer products that are appealing, useful, and valuable. • Legitimate direct selling companies have restrictions in their compensation plan. They limit the number of people who can earn a commission through sales. In a pyramid scheme, there may be many people involved — but only the person at the top is likely to see any income.

• Genuine, reputable direct selling companies do not offer commissions based on recruitment. They reward people for promoting and selling their products. Pyramid schemes typically pay for member recruitment.

We realise how fortunate we are to be celebrating this significant milestone. Not many make it this far. This year is a culmination of a quarter century of hard work, perseverance, and overcoming challenges. This silver anniversary is a testament of our stability and longevity. In 1998, a group of young entrepreneurs, led by two young men, faced an unexpected challenge that could have brought an abrupt end to their dreams. Driven by a desire to keep their promises, they decided not to walk away and chose to find a new path. This decision changed the course of their lives and, over the next 25 years, the lives of thousands of people in nearly 100 countries.

As we embark on our 25th year, we remember and honour this legacy: the legacy of those two young men, our Founders Dato Sri Vijay Eswaran and Joseph ‘Japadas’ Bismark. A legacy defined by a commitment to truth, courage, resilience, and above all, hope for a better future.

Over the last 25 years, QNET has been on a mission to touch a billion hearts, driven by the core philosophy of RYTHM — Raise Yourself to Help Mankind, and guided by the commitment of our Founders to be a force for good in the world. LEGACY

A small group of people from different parts of the world, led by a young Malaysian business major and a Filipino martial arts expert, were brought together by a twist of fate in the vibrant city of Manila in the Philippines in the late 90’s.

In the late 90’s, Vijay Eswaran and Joseph ‘Japa’ Bismark, two young men from drastically different backgrounds, came together in business and friendship. Having found reasonable success in network marketing with an American company that was doing extremely well in the Philippines, the two joined forces and their group, called the V Team, which consisted of bright, motivated, and talented men and women, soon became the largest revenue earner for the American company. At one point, they realised that the American firm was being dishonest with them and, after all efforts to rectify the situation failed, the V Team and a few of their leaders sat around Vijay’s kitchen to discuss the next steps. About 1,500 people who had believed in the V Team leaders had joined the team. What were they going to tell them? The easy way out was to tell them what the American company owners did and wash their hands off any culpability.

However, they did not choose the easy way out. With the fate of thousands of their team members at stake, and a liability in excess of USD 250,000, the two young men along with their core team members made a bold and crazy decision to start their own company, with the sole purpose of looking after the interests of the people that had trusted them and put their life savings into their hands. On that fateful day in September 1998 at the Philippine Stock Exchange Centre (formerly Tektite Towers) in Manila, the Philippines, the company today known as QNET was born.

And as they say, ‘The rest is history.’

LOGISTICS

With e-commerce fueling the growth of our business globally, QNET recognises the importance of enabling a seamless product fulfilment operation. QNET’s products are shipped from four international business hubs serving specific regions/countries, comprising over 60,000 sq. ft. of warehouse space. Our warehouses are supported by an advanced warehouse management system (SAP) and ship approximately 50,000 products per month to more than 100 countries worldwide. In addition, our value-added operations include 100% quality checks for inbound and outbound shipments. Information from QNET’s Integrated Logistics System is synced into the Virtual Office of all Distributors, allowing them to track their shipment online in real time. QNET also engages approximately 40 stockists around the globe to assist customers with their product pick-ups at the nearest location.

At QNET, we are committed to empowering people to take charge of their future and lead better lives.

Financial inclusion is important for reducing poverty and promoting inclusive economic growth. It is not the final goal, but a way to achieve positive outcomes. Research demonstrates that when people have access to financial services, they can improve their lives in various ways. They can start and grow businesses, invest in education, manage risks, and handle unexpected financial challenges more effectively.

Through FinGreen, we are dedicated to addressing the financial knowledge gaps faced by young people and women, primarily through education and training. This program aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and the Addis Ababa Action Agenda. It operates based on three core pillars: assess, train, and advocate.

With a train-the-trainer approach, FinGreen empowers participants to become Financial Literacy Champions, enabling them to educate other community members. Since its launch in 2022, the program has already made a significant impact. Over 700 individuals in Nigeria and Turkey have benefited from FinGreen, equipping them with the skills, habits, and attitudes necessary to make informed financial decisions and achieve their financial goals.

We are excited about the progress we have made so far, and we look forward to expanding our efforts and reaching even more individuals through FinGreen in the future.

QNET recognises the crucial role that forests play in the livelihoods, ecology, culture, and health of the communities in which we operate. Forests support over 80% of the world’s land species and safeguard 75% of our freshwater resources. They also help mitigate natural disasters like floods and landslides, and more than 1.6 billion people rely on forests for their income. The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG) emphasize the importance of reforestation and sustainable forest management in combating climate change.

However, reforesting land comes with its challenges. Converting land back into forests can potentially impact food and energy production. That’s why QNET is initiating a programme on responsible and sustainable reforestation and its implications for the communities in which we operate.

QNET’s Green Legacy, our global reforestation programme, was launched in 2021. In the initial phase, we successfully planted 3,000 saplings in Kenya, the Philippines, and the United Arab Emirates. Since then, we have contributed to reforestation efforts in Bali, Algeria, Turkey, and have more projects planned for other communities in the future. We have planted a total of 7,000 trees so far, and we are excited to continue our efforts in planting more.

Our commitment to the QNET Green Legacy programme reflects our dedication to preserving and restoring our planet’s forests.

A flagship project of the Foundation is the Taarana School for children with special needs in Malaysia that provides much-needed support to differently-abled children and their families. QNET employees and Distributors actively help with fundraising for the school, and many employees also make contributions on special occasions, such as personal birthdays and anniversaries.

The Footprint Project, a sustainable farming project, enabled communities to fund water wells and grow avocados and macadamia nuts. Impact: 500 seedlings planted; 40 acres of fertile land cultivated; 28 villagers trained in sustainable agriculture practices.

Global Himalayan Expedition

Energy access to several communities in this remote region for the first time. It also involved installing solar panels for a primary healthcare centre. Impact: electricity access in 3 villages; power for 430 villagers; 23,000 people benefited from the solar-powered healthcare facility.

• Raksirang, Makawanpur District

National Forum for Advocacy (NAFAN)

Ongoing project to engage, educate, and empower indigenous villagers and children to enhance their basic social transformation skills and knowledge. Impact: 250 beneficiaries over 3 years (until 2024); enrolling 99% of children in school within 2 years; 60% attending school regularly by the 3rd year.

Sarvodaya

An entrepreneurship development programme to help youth and women from underserved communities earn a livelihood. Impact: 840 people trained in skills, leadership, and entrepreneurship; 200 youths completed training; 4 districts impacted by women’s empowerment.

LEADS

Awareness programmes, preschool teacher training, and livelihood support measures amid Covid-19 and political-economic crisis. Impact: 918 students joined the consciousness awareness programme; 26 teachers trained in child rights and protection; 53 families received livelihood support.

Women’s Development Centre

Community-based rehab and social inclusion programme supporting youths’ right to education and medical care. It also provided training for the inclusion and sustainable development of disabled youths. Impact: 416 children and youths rehabilitated; 38 volunteers completed rehabilitation services training; 11 rehabilitation centres established.

‘Sekulah Bateq’ (Bateq School) established in Orang

Asli village of Kampung Kuala Atok to educate 50 children and provide villagers better socioeconomic livelihoods: Impact: 29 children transitioned to mainstream school; women taught handicraft-making; ongoing joint efforts to provide villagers with citizenship documents

• Perak, Selangor, Negril Sembilan & Kedah

Development of Human Resources for Rural Areas (DHRRA)

This collaboration focused on education resource support for stateless children and awareness and other active efforts to enrol them in schools. Impact: 3,000 guidebooks distributed to stakeholders; 429 students received levy fee support; 390 children enrolled in schools.

Persatuan Penduduk Petaling Jaya (MyPJ)

Enhancing the livelihood of 300 residents of an urban slum community through regular development initiatives. Impact: 155 youths attended online tuition classes; 64 beneficiaries joined empowerment workshops; 156 students attended coding classes.

ASA Foundation

CHETAN KORADA

DRIVING ON THE FAST LANE

Chetan Korada is Asia’s first motorsports driver with prosthetic feet to race professionally and to have won a championship. Due to a birth deformity when he was a newborn, Chetan underwent bilateral amputation from the ankles down. Early in life, he accepted the fact that prosthetics were an integral part of his existence. This realisation helped him quickly adapt to the world around him and he went on to pursue his dream of becoming a professional motorsports racer. He is the only differently-abled driver in the world to be driving a non-modified race car.

Chetan has been racing professionally since 2007 and has participated in and won several Championships. He has worked with teams such as WSRF (Wallace Sports Research Foundation), Rams Racing and Meco Motorsports in the past. He finished as the runner-up in MRF FMSCI National Championship 2015 (Formula LGB 1300) and Second Runner-Up in MRF FMSCI National Racing Championship 2017.

QNET has been supporting Chetan since 2009. His extraordinary passion and never-say-never spirit caught the attention of QNET that has always believed in building champions. Chetan’s impressive achievements in motorsport coupled with his multiple talents as an entrepreneur and motivational speakers make him a perfect role model for young people from ordinary families.
