How to Find a Good Mental Health Counselor Mental Health: Tips to Streamline Search for Provider

any people have a difficult time in finding an effective mental health counselor. Just like everything in life, there are good and not-so-great counselors. The key is to find one that will help one solve their current mental health problems.

For those who do not know what they are looking for or where to start, then here are a few ideas on how to find a good mental health counselor.

1. T alk to your doctor or primary care physician.

Your medical or family doctor is a great source in finding a good counselor. Explain to your doctor your problems and he or she can point you in the right direction to seek the proper help.

2. Go to your local hospital.

Your local hospital is another good source you can use to find a good counselor. A hospital is also a good source for finding many different mental health programs in your area. Hospitals know numerous mental health professionals and resources in your area, and they can lead you toward them.

3. Ask your friends and relatives.

Use your network of friends and relatives to see if any of them know of any

good counselors in your area. This can be effective if it does not bother you that other people know that you are seeking a counselor. Many churches and non-profit mental health agencies have a variety of mental health programs and asking the people who run these programs could also provide you with viable options.

When asking for a counselor or finding a mental health program, always ask for someone who has a good reputation. Remember that finding a counselor to help you depends on how you interact with the counselor and how they interact with you. It may take a couple of trials to find the right person, but do not give up. Finding a good counselor will pay off for you in the long run, so be persistent in your search.

Remember that the key components of having an effective mental health counselor are affordability, the ability to effectively talk to your counselor, and most importantly, whether your counselor is able to find the answers to your current problems. If you do not see any improvement in your mental health condition after a couple of months of working with your current counselor, you may want to find someone else. The main point of talk-

QNotes Launches Special Report On Voter Mobilization

notes has been awarded a grant to launch “TurnOUT: How LGBTQ Organizations Have Mobilized the Electorate” as part of the 2020 Renewing Democracy initiative of the Solutions Journalism Network. Renewing Democracy was launched in May 2018 to encourage reporting about how people and institutions are attempting to reinvigorate democracy in communities across the country.

The qnotes project will examine how LGBTQ organizations, like the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), have mobilized the ever-important LGBTQ electorate through up to six months of in-depth reporting and community town hall events.

Since 2004, non-profit organizations have shifted the conversation around LGBTQ issues and ramped up resources to make sure that their voices are heard.

These efforts have proven to increase voter turnout, which is of great importance as we head into the 2020 election. The series will look at voter mobilization efforts, LGBTQ issues in the political conversation and voter protection.

This project has been supported by the Solutions Journalism Network, a non-profit organization dedicated to rigorous and compelling reporting about responses to social problems.

NC NAACP to Make History at HKonJ

Organization Establishes Largest Contingency of LGBTQ People and Allies for People’s March and Rally

T

he HKonJ (Historic Thousands on Jones Street) will host its largest assembly of LGBTQ people and allies from throughout the state and across the nation for its Feb. 8 People’s Assembly March and Rally in Raleigh. The theme is 1000 STRONG and represents the anticipated number of people who will march in this segment of the annual event.

NC NAACP LGBTQ Committee Inaugural Chair, Bishop Tonyia Rawls, is coordinating this historic effort. She is a longtime activist and architect of the organization’s LGBTQ work. Rawls stated, “I am so proud of the progress we have made in the efforts to link the needs and concerns of the LGBTQ community with those of the civil rights community. We quite often are fighting the same enemies of freedom, justice and equality and have decided it is time to tear down the walls of separation that have divided us by race, class, gender and sexual orientation.” She went on to celebrate the partners who have already joined in this effort.

Support has come from PFLAG, The National Black Justice Coalition, DEMOS, The Task Force, Many Voices, The Unity Fellowship Church Movement, Equality North Carolina, The Freedom Center for Social Justice, The Black Unitarian Universalists, Believe Out Loud and others who are signing on as individuals and organizations to help mobilize the effort.

The NC NAACP kicked off its first annual “HKonJ People’s Assembly” in February of 2007 when over 3,500 supporters sanctioned and signed the coalition’s “HKonJ 14-Point People’s Agenda”. The HKonJ Coalition transformed the 14-Point People’s Agenda into comprehensive reform bills that have been introduced in subsequent legislative sessions. The most recent victory came Dec. 26, 2019, when North Carolina federal judge Loretta Biggs blocked the law requiring “approved” forms of ID before residents could vote.

While the hold is temporary, it was a big win for the LGBTQ community and the NC NAACP voter ID case against the state which continues. Judge Biggs wrote that state elections officials had been planning “a very large statewide mailing” for the

first week of January, to tell voters about the ID law, and she blocked that effort.

[Ed. Note: Cards had begun to be received in December to registered voters.] This case has importance to transgender individuals, elders, young adults, the formerly incarcerated and others who are often denied free access to elections.

The HKonJ Coalition holds an annual mobilization called the Moral March on Raleigh & HKonJ People’s Assembly annually. It grew to approximately 80,000 in 2017. Each year, on the second Saturday in February, thousands of HKonJ marchers flood downtown Raleigh, N.C. where the HKonJ People’s Assembly convenes and ultimately marches to the North Carolina State Capitol to address issues related to justice, protections and equality for all residents.

After years of partnering with the LGBTQ community on legislative issues like Amendment One, (a legislatively referred constitutional amendment in North Carolina that, until overruled in federal court, amended the Constitution of North Carolina to prohibit the state from recognizing or performing samesex marriages or civil unions), and HB2, (which was passed in March 2016 and amended state law to preempt any antidiscrimination ordinances passed by local communities, and compelled schools and public facilities containing single-gender washrooms to allow only people of the corresponding birth-certificate sex to use them), NC NAACP is taking steps to expand the relationship.

In 2019, they participated in four Pride celebrations and hosted a series

of listening sessions that allowed them learn more about how to more effectively support and strategically partner with the LGBTQ community. NAACP State President, Rev. Dr. T. Anthony Spearman, stated that, “I am clear how important it is to protect the marginalized and oppressed within our state; that of course, must include members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and gender-variant community who have far too often been used as social and political scapegoats.”

A coalition of organizations, including the Modern Military Association of America, Human Rights Campaign, National Center for Transgender Equality, GLBTQ Legal Advocates and Defenders, National Center for Lesbian Rights, Lambda Legal, American Civil Liberties Union and Palm Center, expressed disappointment that the final FY20 National Defense Authorization bill did not include the Speier/Brown amendment, which was previously approved by the House of Representatives in a bipartisan vote of 242 to 187. Colorado gender law goes into effect

Coloradans who are transgender and non-binary are now able to get a update their name and gender on Colorado-issued identity documents, One Colorado stated. Jude’s Law will cut through the red tape for transgender and non-binary Coloradans as they try to update the gender specified on their birth certificates to match who they are. The law honors the 13-year-old transgender student, Jude, who testified in support of an iteration of a birth certificate modernization act over the last five sessions. info: bit.ly/2SRpZge.

Conservative candidate enters N.C. House race

Republican Larry Pittman has announced that he is running for the 83rd District seat in the North Carolina House of Representatives (Cabarrus and Rowan Counties), IndyWeek reported. Census to unveil ad campaign

LGBTQ seniors face critical challenges accessing aging services SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — On Lok and Openhouse recently released results from a groundbreaking new report by the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), which aims to tackle a wide range of unique challenges LGBTQ seniors face in accessing aging services in San Francisco. In the “Needs Assessment of LGBTQ Senior Health in San Francisco” report, Jason Flatt, Ph.D. sought to determine the most effective ways to serve the area’s growing LGBTQ senior population — especially when considering the fact that one in five don’t use aging services because they feel unsafe or unwelcome.

“In many respects, LGBTQ seniors in San Francisco face an uphill battle when it comes to accessing many vital services. These include choosing lower quality services to accommodate fixed incomes, experiencing discrimination, having unique emotional and social barriers, and surviving trauma associated with either being victimized and/or living through the HIV/AIDS epidemic,” said Flatt, assistant professor in residence at the Institute for Health & Aging in the UCSF School of Nursing. “These new findings provide a strong rationale for a one-stop shop program that integrates case management, LGBTQ-identifying staff, use of trauma care approaches and social activities/programs that reflect the diverse interests and backgrounds of the LGBTQ community.”

Through focus groups and a comprehensive community survey, comprising opinions and experiences of 100 plus LGBTQ older adults and their caregivers, the report identifies key themes that reflect the needs of this senior segment. Key barriers to accessing the individualized care LGBTQ seniors need range from prohibitive costs to poorly designed or discriminatory services. Additionally, many participants experienced poor quality care (including long waits), discrimination from service providers, homophobia, transphobia, racism and a lack of specialist HIV care. Among the most-requested services to meet LGBTQ seniors’ special needs: wellness programs, adult education, inhome support, recreation and transportation.

“Many seniors aren’t accessing necessary support because services are simply not inclusive, affordable and customizable to meet their broader needs,” said Flatt. “We’ve heard first-hand from seniors and their caregivers that their deep desire is to access critical services and thoughtfully designed programs. They want a nondiscriminatory welcoming environment that’s created with their unique set of needs in mind.”

According to a recent study by the Department of Aging and Adult Services (DAAS), LGBTQ seniors are four times less likely to access aging services.

Important reasons include: one in five feel unsafe and/or unwelcome; nearly half have mobility limitations; one in four report difficulty accessing transportation; and one in six report lower quality social activities.

Key recommendations for LGBTQ-inclusive Adult Day Services include: Culturally tailored programs (especially for transgender people and LGBTQ people of color); specialized health and case management services; supportive programs for caregivers; and services that are free or at a reduced cost.

“These findings validate the need for us to listen to LGBTQ seniors as we develop new programs to meet their expectations. Our new partnership, from which Openhouse + On Lok Community Day Services was created, is structured to help solve these challenges,” said Grace Li, On Lok CEO. “The report emphasizes the critical need to co-design a program by and for LGBTQ seniors and that’s what we’re doing with Openhouse. It’s paramount to provide inclusive services that focus on social, wellness and education programs, as well as group activities that are based on the unique interests and cultural background of diverse LGBTQ seniors. As we design our programs, we want to factor in all perspectives, such as the personal challenges faced by the transgender community and LGBTQ people of color. We’re opening up the design process to the public for creative input to ensure we’re meeting the needs of this diverse community.”

Older adults are the fastest growing age group in San Francisco. By 2030, it’s estimated that nearly one out of three San Francisco residents will be age 60 or older. More than 12 percent of older San Francisco residents (around 20,000) identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual and/ or transgender and queer.

“With the significant demand for patient-centered care and services for LGBTQ seniors, Openhouse is excited to work closely with On Lok in the months and years ahead,” said Karyn Skultety, executive director of Openhouse. “The partnership kicks off early [in 2020] at our new community center which also includes 79 new units of LGBTQ-welcoming senior affordable housing. Candidate enters 9th District race

Democrat Clayton Brooks has thrown his name into the mix of candidates for the 9th District for North Carolina in the upcoming election, the Winston-Salem Journal reported. A native of Scotland County, he has most recently lived in Wake County and serves as an officer in the Wake County Democratic Party. Brooks is a graduate of Harvard University and received his Master’s from Columbia University. During his time at Harvard, he co-founded theLGBT Political Coalition.

Network reverses ad placement decision KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A decision was made earlier in December 2019 at Crown Media Family Networks to remove commercials featuring a same-sex couple due to complaints from the conservative group One Million Moms, Deadline reported.

The organization said that the exchange of a same-sex couple kiss was “not family-friendly” and resulted in a petition being sent to Hallmark about the commercial and other LGBTQ content, Deadline added. That decision created a backlash from viewers and LGBTQ rights organizations nationwide and created a media firestorm.

GLAAD created a counter petition to have the ads reinstated.

Deadline further reported that GLAAD President and CEO, Sarah Kate Ellis “followed up with a statement saying, ‘The Hallmark Channel’s decision to correct its mistake sends an important message to LGBTQ people and represents a major loss for fringe organizations, like One Million Moms, whose sole purpose is to hurt families like mine. LGBTQ people are, and will continue to be a part of advertisements and family programming and that will never change. GLAAD exists to hold brands like The Hallmark Channel accountable when they make discriminatory decisions and to proactively ensure families of all kinds are represented in fair and accurate ways.’”

“The Crown Media team has been agonizing over this decision as we’ve seen the hurt it has unintentionally caused. Said simply, they believe this was the wrong decision. Our mission is rooted in helping all people connect, celebrate traditions, and be inspired to capture meaningful moments in their lives. Anything that detracts from this purpose is not who we are. We are truly sorry for the hurt and disappointment this has caused.” said Mike Perry, president and CEO, Hallmark Cards, Inc. The company has been recognized as one of the Human Rights Campaigns Best Places to Work, and as one of Forbes America’s Best Employers for Diversity. They say they have been a progressive pioneer on television for decades — “telling wide ranging stories that elevate the human spirit,” several of which highlight the importance of tolerance and understanding.

Hallmark said they will be working with GLAAD to better represent the LGBTQ community across their portfolio of brands. The Hallmark Channel reached out to Zola to re-establish its partnership and reinstated the commercials.

“Across our brand, we will continue to look for ways to be more inclusive and celebrate our differences.” Perry said.

Last year, actress Hilarie Burton and the network parted ways over her stand for more inclusive and diverse roles in Hallmark’s movies, IBT reported.

IBT added, “Just going through some old emails from a #Hallmark job I was ‘let go’ from back in January,” Burton wrote. “I had insisted on a LGBTQ character, an interracial couple and diverse casting. I was polite, direct and professional. But after the execs gave their notes on the script and NONE of my requests were honored, I was told ‘take it or leave it.’ I left it. And the paycheck.”

Burton, who is married to actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan, said that is she were the sole provider of her family, that she would have to choose money rather than principle. Come to Your Census and Vote!

It’s 2020 and it ushers in a year of a presidential election and counting heads among the citizens of the U.S. During the year that is unfolding, two key areas that can make a difference to the LGBTQ community and to the principles of democracy are simple: Vote and get counted.

Voting is one of the most precious privileges that U.S. citizens have that few worldwide possess. It requires some research, position taking and a trip to the polls to help select the leaders who represent us all. And, we should think of “all” as “everyone” — no matter what that person’s race, religion, economic status, marital status, gender, sexual orientation, etc. may be.

First of all, if you are not registered to vote — now is the time to do so. Simply go online or visit your local election board’s headquarters and sign up. Once you’ve gotten notification that you’re on the rolls, be courageous, be bold, be a voter.

This spring across the nation, everyone has the opportunity to be counted. Doing so gives our leadership the information they need to make important decisions.

The U.S. Census Bureau states: “The census tells us who we are and where we are going as a nation, and helps our communities determine where to build everything from schools to supermarkets, and from homes to hospitals. It helps the government decide how to distribute funds and assistance to states and localities. It is also used to draw the lines of legislative districts and reapportion the seats each State holds in Congress.”

This year for the first time, the U.S. Census Bureau’s America’s Families and Living Arrangements table package includes estimates of same-sex couples.

From Bayard Rustin to Blossom C. Brown 15 Black LGBTQ Activists and Advocates

BY QNotes Staff work continues to “bear witness” for future generations.

O

n Jan. 20, we celebrate the remarkable legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the 25th anniversary of the national day of service that marks his life. The organizer behind the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, Bayard Rustin, was sidelined because of his “open gayness” and little is still known today of his legacy as a leading figure in the Civil Rights movement.

So, in honor of both King and Rustin’s legacies, qnotes is highlighting the contributions of 15 black LGBTQ leaders who have made, or are still making, an indelible mark on our history.

BAYARD RUSTIN (1912-1987) Bayard Rustin was a civil rights activist and the principle organizer of the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. He was one of the most influential thought leaders of the day, seeing the importance of intersectionality in the human fight for equality. Rustin wrote, “If we want to do away with the injustice to gays, it will not be done because we get rid of the injustice to gays. It will be done because we are forwarding the effort for the elimination of injustice to all. And we will win the rights for gays, or blacks, or Hispanics, or women within the context of whether we are fighting for all.” Throughout his advocacy, Bayard Rustin focused on labor and working conditions, universal human rights and upward mobility — three principles that became calls to action in the March on Washington and still resonate today.

STORMÉ DELARVERIE (1920-2014) It is possible that Stormé Delarverie threw the first punch at the Stonewall Uprising in 1969. A lifelong activist and drag performer, she was the only “male impersonator” in the famous Jewel Box Revue, notably the first integrated drag show, from 19551969. Two weeks after Stonewall, DeLarverie was part of forming the Stonewall Veteran’s Association and was a regular at Pride parades throughout her life. She lived at the famous Hotel Chelsea and continued to patrol New York City for anti-gay and anti-black prejudice until she was 83.

JAMES BALDWIN (1924-1987) James Baldwin wrote “The great force of history comes from the fact that we carry it within us, are unconsciously controlled by it in many ways, and history is literally present in all that we do.” A writer and playwright, Baldwin is considered one of the greatest writers of the 20th century and broke new ground exploring racial and social issues.

His writing on the black experience was a form of activism, and he moved to Paris to escape the racism and homophobia that were present in American culture. His

AUDRE LORDE (1934-1992) Audre Lorde (born Audrey Geraldine Lorde) was a lesbian activist, writer, poet, teacher and visionary. Her work centered around the civil and social injustices she observed throughout her life and created a literary place for difficult conversations around race, gender and sexuality. She is considered one of the most prolific writers of the 20th century, founded Kitchen Table: Women of Color Press and spoke at the 1979 National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. In a response to criticism from white, anti-gay Sen. Jesse Helms of North Carolina, Lorde stated, “My sexuality is part and parcel of who I am, and my poetry comes from the intersection of me and my worlds … Jesse Helm’s objection to my work is not about obscenity … or even about sex. It is about revolution and change.”

BARBARA JORDAN (1936-1996) A lawyer, educator and politician, Barbara Jordan was a leader in the Civil Rights Movement and became the first African-American elected to the Texas Senate after Reconstruction. In 1973, she became the first Southern African-American woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. It is her eloquent speech to the House Judiciary Committee on Articles of Impeachment against former President Richard Nixon in 1974 that positioned Jordan as an unwavering voice for justice and equality. “If the society today allows wrongs to go unchallenged, the impression is created that those wrongs have the approval of the majority,” said Jordan.

ANGELA DAVIS (1944-) Born in Birmingham, Ala., Angela Davis is most widely known for her book “Women, Race & Class.” She has worked as a professor and activist, advocating gender equity, prison reform and alliances across racial barriers. She gained international fame during her imprisonment and trial on conspiracy charges from 1970-1972 and from her association with the Black Panthers. An influential quote by Davis, “I’m no longer accepting the things I cannot change…I’m changing the things I cannot accept” often resonates with activists today.

MARSHA P. JOHNSON (1945-1992) A central figure in the gay liberation movement, Marsha P. Johnson was an activist from the Stonewall Uprising in 1969 through the 1980s with ACT UP. She co-founded STAR House with Sylvia Rivera to advocate for young transgender people in New York City, and has become a hero of the transgender community. In an interview for a 1972 book, Johnson avowed that she wanted “to see gay people liberated and free and to have equal rights that other people have in America,” with her “gay brothers and sisters out of jail and on the streets again.”

BARBARA SMITH (1946-) Barbara Smith has been a respected lesbian feminist since the 1960s when she participated in school desegregation protests as a high school student. Smith soon became extremely put-off by the sexism she experienced in male-dominated groups of the Civil Rights Movement and turned to black feminist politics. She was among the first publishers of books for and by women of color and established black women’s studies in college and university curricula. Today, she continues to lecture and has coordinated marches against Islamophobia.

PHIL WILSON (1956-) Phil Wilson is the founder and CEO of the Black AIDS Institute. Wilson also co-founded the National Black Lesbian and Gay Leadership Forum and the National Task Force on AIDS Prevention. He was a member of the U.S. delegation to the 1994 World AIDS Summit in Paris, has worked extensively on HIV/AIDS policy, research, prevention and treatment around the world and organized black AIDS activists to urge the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to provide additional funding to AfricanAmerican groups eager to educate and mobilize their community around HIV/AIDS issues.

ANDREA JENKINS (1961-) A writer, performance artist, poet and activist, Andrea Jenkins made history in 2017 when she became the first African-American openly transgender woman to be elected to public office. She represents Minneapolis’ Ward 8 on the city council and serves as the council’s vice president. Jenkins speaks often about the oppression that occurs even within oppressed communities like the LGBTQ community. “We got to love every corner of the rainbow,” Jenkins said in 2018. “Respect the beauty that lives in each and every one of us. When your blues become my blues, we can sing ‘Oh Happy Day.’” WANDA SYKES (1964-) Most widely known for her comedic force and countless film and television appearances including the 2003 Fox series “Wanda at Large,” she is also a passionate LGBTQ advocate.

Sykes came out as a lesbian in 2008 while rallying against Proposition 8, a law forbidding equal marriage in California. She was part of GLSEN’s “Think Before You Speak” campaign against homophobic language and was awarded the Activism in the Arts honor at the Triumph Awards. In 2009, she became the first African-American woman, and the first LGBTQ individual to be the featured entertainer for the annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner. She continues to speak out for others through her work and is a vocal supporter of the Ruth Ellis Center, a non-profit organization that helps homeless and at-risk LGBTQ youth in Michigan.

KEITH BOYKIN (1965-) Keith Boykin is a political commentator, professor, author and the former White House aide to former President Bill Clinton where he was one of the highest ranking openly gay people in the administration. In 2003, see next page u

he founded the National Black Justice Coalition which primarily serves LGBTQ people and continues to advocate for the unique challenges and needs of black LGBTQ people in the U.S. JANET MOCK (1983-) Janet Mock continues to make history as a writer, director and advocate. In 2018, she became the first transgender woman of color to write and direct an episode for television with “Pose” on FX. She is a contributing editor for Marie Claire and a former staff editor of People magazine’s website. She has openly discussed her own experiences as a transgender woman and in 2012, started a Twitter hashtag to empower transgender women, called #GirlsLikeUs. PATRISSE CULLORS (1983-) Patrice Cullors is an artist, organizer and self-proclaimed “freedom fighter” from Los Angeles.

As co-founder of Black Lives Matter, Cullors recently toured her multimedia performance art piece, “POWER: From the Mouths of the Occupied,” which highlights the impact of mass criminalization and state violence in black communities. She is also the founder of Dignity and Power Now, which fights to end state violence and mass incarceration. Her 2018 book, “When They Call You a Terrorist: A Black Lives Matter Memoir” was listed on The New York Times Bestsellers list just one week after its initial release.

BLOSSOM C. BROWN (1987-) Blossom C. Brown first hit the news in 2015 when the Mississippi-born transgender activist was introduced on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” by Caitlyn Jenner and awarded $20,000 to support her dream of becoming a nurse, but you most likely recall the moment she took the mic at CNN’s LGBTQ Town Hall meeting in October.

“Black trans women are being killed in this country and CNN, you have erased Black trans women for the last time!” she said.

Centering herself in the middle of an aisle, Brown continued, “Let me tell you something, black trans women are dying. Our lives matter!” Brown was called to action by the absence of transgender voices, especially those of black transgender women who suffer the highest rate of hate-fueled violence today, during the debate. Brown also works as an actress and producer, and has appeared on the transgender reality show “I Am Cait.” She has volunteered for the Human Rights Campaign and works on HIV education and improving access to the prevention medicine, PrEP. : :

Thor: Dragnarok An Interview with Thorgy Thor

Fashion Clown fits my personality pretty well. Actually, a designer friend of mine Domino Couture looked at me and said, “Thorgy, you are the Fashion Clown.” Thank you for admiring my fashions on “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” Too bad some of the judges didn’t feel the same way! If you look at screen shots of each look I did on the show, it was important to me to show a different silhouette, color and style completely executed well! And I think I did that! At this point, my drag wardrobe is overtaking my New York apartment, so I’m looking into finally buying a beautiful home to curate. The question is whether to move out of New York.

GS: You are a natural comedian and quick with a funny retort.

How important is it for you to maintain a sense of humor and also include comedy in your work?

TT: Good question! Gregg, when I make people laugh, it opens up a trust between audience and speaker. I feel after that laugh, they are really listening! Then we play Shostakovich [laughs]!

a perfectionist, then I wear that medal with honor. Growing up as an orchestral musician, you are taught to be quiet and mix with your section, not to stick out.

Drag is all about sticking out! However, training never leaves you. I found my discipline implemented in my work ethic as a nightlife performer and couldn’t be more thankful.

GS: In January 2020, you will be bringing the Thorchestra aspect of your performance to a concert where you are a featured performer with the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra. What does it mean to you to perform in such a setting?

TT: Where do I begin? I feel I’ve commented about my gratitude many times in the past. RuPaul allowed me to play violin on “Drag Race” during Season 8, and I said out loud, “I want to do a Thorchestra!”

After that, I received over 500 emails from orchestral players throughout the world saying, “Hello, my name is Sarah, I live in Scotland, I play the viola, I would love to audition for your orchestra.” So, I knew I had something important happening.

Putting together my own orchestra immediately became a daunting task. When conductor Daniel Bartholemew-Poyser of Symphony Nova Scotia called me and collaborated on the very first Thorchestra, I was floored. Two sold out shows and the rest is history, as well as the future!

I work with a small team executing each Thorchestra, and one person I’d like to mention is Mary Kirk Pollard, who has been by my side every step of the way as my tour manager. Mary Kirk is also a Charlotte native, so welcome home, girl! Being invited to perform with the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra is a great honor, and I couldn’t be more excited to give the audience a night of entertainment, because that’s what I love to do. I’ve had the pleasure of performing with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra and Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, as well.

I would love to grace the stages of every major orchestra across the great U.S. of A., so, hopefully, Charlotte is the catalyst for that. Thank you for inviting me with your famous southern hospitality, Charlotte!

GS: What can people attending the concert expect to hear from you?

TT: Well, I’ve always been very loud and proud to be the person I am. If you ask friends of mine from 13 years ago, they would say “she hasn’t changed a bit.” I worked NYC nightlife for years and now that I have transitioned into performing with major orchestras, I would be doing a disservice if i didn’t include some adult language at the show. It’s where I come from! However, it’s for all ages. In fact, if you come to the show, be prepared to be pulled on stage. I love doing that! It’s also something that orchestra culture has steered away from for years. I will be giving away free gifts to random seat holders, telling stories from my life, and of course, playing famous classical pieces live on violin, viola and cello! To be honest, I would love to just join the orchestra and play a 42-minute Brahms symphony directly into Mahler and then call it a night.

GS: Are there any other upcoming projects that you would like to mention?

TT: Well, you mentioned catchphrases earlier. I’ve decided when something is funny, memorable and I can’t stop saying it, it’s a song title. I’ve been working on my “album” for more than two years, filled with ridiculous catch-phrase worthy song titles, good beats and overall tra-la-la. Fingers crossed (that) I have time this year to get into the studio and lay it down for all to enjoy and critique! Other than that, I have a long list of Thorchestras to prepare for this coming year and well into 2022. Most importantly, I’m ecstatic that I can announce the airing of our new show on TLC in March, “Drag Me Down The Aisle.” It’s a feel-good show with me, and three of my queen peers traveling across the U.S. sprinkling humor and sentiment to those in need during important events in their life. You ask because that’s your favorite song, the one that makes you sing along as you seat-dance in the car. It’s the one that reminds you of the good times, of meeting your beloved, fun with friends or One Special Night. Turn that up, please, it’s the perfect background music by which to read “Where Do I Begin?” by Elvis Duran.

Nearly every child of the last century who owned a tape recorder spent time pretending to be a radio DJ, but Elvis Duran took it to another level: eight-year-old Duran had not only turntables and records, he also had a kit-transmitter that let him broadcast to the widow next door in his McKinney, Texas, neighborhood.

As a teenager, Duran’s dream of being a radio DJ was finally fulfilled at a tiny McKinney radio station, which led to a gig at a larger station some distance away from the Dallas area, which led to another job and another, crossstate, cross-country, and back. He and his boyfriend —

who’d patiently city-hopped with Duran — sometimes had no time to unpack before Duran was fired from one job and hired at another in a different city, something that was common in radio then. At one point, Duran lost not just a job, but he lost the boyfriend, too.

That was regretful, but he moved on quickly. There was always another radio station, just as there were other men.

He also sampled different formats in various cities before landing at the Holy Grail for Radio DJs: New York City, at Z100, then the Big Apple’s Number One station. There, he learned and grew, and honed his craft.

But like everything that’s good, radio evolved and Duran became itchy to move — right down the road, to the competition. His program director, however, had other thoughts: Duran had a contract and though he begged for release, he was given the morning slot at Z100.

Little did he know then that it was a gig he’d have for more than two decades…

These days, it seems like there are a dozen ways to get your tunes, but radio still

rules. After all, as author Elvis Duran points out in “Where Do I Begin?,” with radio, you feel as though you’re spending time with a friend.

That’s also the general feeling you’ll take away from this book, too. Over and over again, Duran stresses his goal of authenticity for his syndicated show and that’s what fans get here, with the same freneticism of a radio show, the same wackiness. That means you get the good, including behind-the-scenes peeks, both in-studio and onstage, and the kind of stories that can only come from behind a mic.

It also means you’ll get the bad, including the ubiquitous namedropping, tired tales of partying, and several urine bits.

And yet, if you grew up listening to a local DJ and imagining his (or her!) life, you shouldn’t even try to resist this book.

That’s what people think when they see you and your closest pal: that you’re tethered by some sort of invisible cord.

You think alike, talk alike, you sometimes mirror each other’s actions. Where there’s one, there’s the other, even, as in the new book “Bosom Friends”

by Thomas J. Balcerski, when you’re often poles apart.

In the years prior to the Civil War, our nation’s Capital was “very much a work in progress”: roads were little more than mud, neighborhoods were far apart and, indeed, Washington D.C. was a swamp to which most Congressmen had to travel. Since nearly all were land-

owners elsewhere, few elected officials brought their families to the city with them; those who came solo needed places to live, so boardinghouses — called “messes” — sprung up to house the politicians.

It was at one such “mess” that William King met James Buchanan.

King was born to be a politician: educated at the University of North Carolina, he almost immediately went into politics after graduation.

He was a social man, and very charming, but he never married, blaming it on a broken heart over a princess who was angered by a perceived insult. Balcerski hints that the princess story was a convenient ruse.

Buchanan was also educated and politicallyminded, but his personal life differed: he was engaged to be married, but a misunderstanding caused his fiancé to call off the nuptials. Before Buchanan could patch things up, she fell ill and died. For the rest of his life, he, too, claimed that a broken heart kept him from marrying.

At that time in history, says Balcerski, homosexuality was strictly forbidden, but deeply “intimate” friendships between men were common and even encouraged; it seems likely that King and Buchanan formed one of these while

living at the “mess,” partaking in debates together, and working at the Capital. Their “bosom friendship,” however, appeared exceptionally close: tongues wagged and others publicly teased the politicians for their particular bond.

But were they lovers, as rumors have claimed for over 170 years?

Inconclusive, as you’ll see in “Bosom Friends.” There are many reasons to think either way; although author Thomas J. Balcerski says they weren’t, evidence otherwise is tantalizing.

To get there, though, will take some rock-climbing.

To understand the lives of King and Buchanan, one must inherently understand politics, of which much of this book consists. This is necessary, since it also shows division between the two men, ultimately both physically and emotionally; the scrappy political competition in which they engaged; and an untraversable gulf of disagreement— facets that, individually and together, are fascinating. Readers will clearly see the affection between the two men here, though we’ll never completely know the true nature of it: possibly-argument-settling written communication between the two disappeared shortly after the Civil War. That sets up a delicious double-mystery that leaves you to make up your own mind: letters lost or tossed? “Bosom Friends,” or more than that? If you’re curious to know, this book will keep you tethered to your chair. : :

Queer Travelouge: Five Things to Do in The Arch City

his was my fourth visit to Columbus, Ohio and every time I visit, I discover something new. What a lot of people don’t realize about this thriving mid-west city is that its LGBTQ community is one of the largest in the United States and growing every day.

Here are a few LGBTQ attractions and events to explore while visiting The Arch City.

Stonewall Columbus — Few cities the size of Columbus offer an entire building dedicated to the local LGBTQ community.

I got a chance to visit Stonewall Columbus, their LGBTQ community center, located in the Short North neighborhood. The building, which recently went through a major renovation, offers a number of health and wellness services in addition to hosting numerous events throughout the year. Stonewall also houses an art gallery dedicated to local LGBTQ artists.

German Village — German Village is a cute neighborhood just south of downtown which boasts a wonderful selection of restaurants, bars and bookstores, most notably The Book Loft, which offers an extensive collection of LGBTQ literature.

A few blocks away are some of the city’s neighborhood gay bars including Club Diversity, Boscoe’s and Tremont Lounge.

Club Diversity is located in a converted house and really does welcome the most diverse crowd I have seen at a gay bar in recent memory. The establishment makes everyone feel comfortable regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

Boscoe’s is also quite unique. On the evening I visited, the bar had a drag show and male strippers alternating performances throughout the night.

Columbus Pride — Columbus Pride is one of the largest Pride festivals in the country, drawing over 800,000 revelers every year and according to local sources, their pride parade is now larger than Chicago’s. Not a bad accomplishment for a city much smaller than Chi-Town. Plan on attending the next festival which is scheduled for June 19-21, 2020.

The Columbus Museum of Art — The Columbus Museum of Art will open an Art After Stonewall exhibition in March 2020.

The exhibition, which previously visited Miami and New York was actually curated by the Columbus Museum of Art and will end the tour right where it all began. The entire process of curating an exhibition of this size, which includes about 250 works of art by LGBTQ artists, took around 7 years to complete. The collection includes a combination of well-known artists as well as some lesser known names.

Barcelona — For dinner, check out a gay-owned restaurant in German Village called Barcelona. The tapasstyle restaurant offers a large indoor dining room as well as a lovely patio that makes you feel as if you are in Spain.

I tried a variety of tapas in addition to a delicious charcuterie board which nicely completed the white sangria. Barcelona offers four types of paella to choose from including a vegetarian option.

If you are looking for an easy, affordable and fun city to visit, check out Columbus.

You may be surprised at what this city has to offer, and you may keep coming back to experience its warmth and hospitality.

ev. Jasmine Beach-Ferrara is the founder and executive director of the Campaign for Southern Equality (CSE).

She founded CSE in 2011 and has worked on LGBTQ rights campaigns since 2011.

The North Carolina native is a Brown University graduate and also received a Master’s of Fine Arts from Warren Wilson College and a Master of Divinity from Harvard Divinity School. She is a published author and also serves as a minister in the United Church of Christ. qnotes had the pleasure to speak with Jasmine to learn more about her work with CSE as well as what she does outside of her LGBTQ rights efforts.

As the founder of CSE, what are some of your roles and responsibilities?

I love my job because no two days are the same, and that’s been true for almost 10 years since we launched CSE. It’s a mix of being an organizer, working on communications, strategy, supporting our staff team, working with community members and fundraising.

What inspired you to develop CSE? I’m a queer person from the South and I knew what was possible here — how ready people were to take action, how brave people were and how real and urgent people’s needs were.

What sort of backlash, if any, have you received from members of the public who oppose CSE? Over the years we have experienced the same kind of backlash as other groups — periodic hate mail and threats.

What are some of the positive outcomes of CSE that have taken place thus far?

We are honored to have helped lead efforts to win marriage equality in the South. We have served more than 4,200 people with our free direct service clinics. We have given out more than $240,000 in grassroots grants to support LGBTQ people organizing in their hometowns. We have been able to help pass pro-LGBTQ policies in school systems, cities and counties, and at the state level.

But above all of this, we have had the great honor of working with thousands of people across the South — hearing their stories, supporting them as they take a stand, helping to amplify their stories.

What are some of the challenges you faced in getting CSE off the ground?

We were a true start-up when we launched— we had about $500

in the bank and worked out of my living room. We were using new strategies and had a new analysis about working in the South — some people were really responsive and excited and some people thought we had it wrong.

With parts of the South being especially intolerant of the LGBTQ community, and as the founder a movement toward LGBTQ equality, are you ever fearful of retaliation or concerned for your and your family’s safety?

I am very aware of the tremendous sacrifices that so many leaders have made in the past, including actual violence and threats to their families. And I’m aware that right now, it is transgender women of color and LGBTQ youth who face the greatest risks of violence and harassment in our community — so we focus a lot on how to support these members of our community around safety issues.

Aside from your tireless efforts with CSE, what else do you do in a professional capacity?

I serve as a county commissioner in Buncombe County, N.C. I also serve as a chaplain for the Echoing Green Foundation.

What is your favorite thing about living in the Carolinas?

There are too many to name, but top 10 would be: the heat, Tarheels basketball, Carolina Courage soccer, Carolina Panthers football, barbecue, coleslaw, all the food, the beaches, the mountains, backroads, the music — so much good music, and being a swing state.

As a mom of three, did you always aspire to have a big family?

I always wanted to be a mom, and it’s an awesome blessing and adventure to have three kiddos with Meghann.

When faced with adversity and opposition, what do you do to maintain tenacity and motivation?

Faith is my anchor and the first place I go in times of adversity.

I’m also continually inspired by the people we work with all across the South and the many giants of civil rights work, like John Lewis, who have come before us — their courage, hope, and tenacity inspire and motivate me.

What is your biggest fear and why?
