How Will You Show Up for This Moment?

T

hese days, a week can feel like a year — and that’s not always a bad thing.

After months of quarantine due to COVID-19 and weeks of protest against racialized oppression in this country, we received two wins from the Supreme Court of the United States that will be lifesaving for our communities.

Title VII & 1557

On Monday, June 16, SCOTUS ruled that LGBTQ people cannot be fired from their jobs based on their sexual orientation or gender identity. In many ways, this ruling holds more significance for the LGBTQ community than marriage equality — and it positively impacts the issue of workplace discrimination across this nation.

I think Equality Florida Executive Director Nadine Smith said it best when she described the win as a “cool glass of water on a hot day.” It’s a moment of relief — celebration, even — but just one moment within the larger struggle for liberation for all marginalized folks. There are still critical gaps in our nondiscrimination laws — in housing, public places, federal programs and more. HB142 is still on the books in our state until the end of this year. Outside of the workplace, LGBTQ people face harassment and mistreatment in their daily lives — and black and brown Americans in particular.

One very glaring example of this is the Trump administration finalizing a rule interpreting Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) that removes clear protections from discrimination against LGBTQ people on June 12.

This change opens the door — even encourages — rampant discrimination against transgender folks at the hands of healthcare professionals. This attack clearly shows

that while progress may benefit some of us, the most vulnerable members of our communities continue to suffer at the hands of the Trump administration.

DACA

On June 18, we received even more good news from SCOTUS: the justices ruled that Trump cannot immediately end Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), a mechanism that protects people brought to the United States as children by shielding them from deportation and letting them work.

Trump has very publicly waged a war against immigrants in this country throughout the course of his presidency, and the move to end DACA was only the latest in these attacks.

Had DACA ended, over 700,000 young Americans — many of them LGBTQ — would’ve been subjected to deportation. The consequences of this would have been unimaginable, with thousands of families ripped apart due to unjust and discriminatory immigration statutes. It’s important that the LGBTQ community continue to lock arms with the immigrant community and fight for their rights to live and work in this country in the same way we do.

Black Lives Matter

In the backdrop of these rulings are, of course, the continued protests in the streets stemming from the horrific murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minn. Since George’s death, we’ve only continued to see outrageous violence committed against black folks, including two black transgender women named Dominique Rem’mie Fells and Riah Milton.

This horrific brutality against our society’s most vulnerable has only increased since Donald Trump took office in 2017. His administration and supporters are responsible for solidifying white nationalism and white supremacy as a political identity in this country — and it’s our collective responsibility to do something about it.

In whatever way you can, I encourage you to show up in this moment and see how all of these issues are interconnected. The murder of black and brown folks in the street, the attempt to remove 700,000 immigrants from this nation’s borders, the lack of discrimination protections in our laws for LGBTQ folks — we are all fighting against systematic, oppressive power structures that make life more difficult for us all. The environment of COVID-19 is bringing all of these issues to the surface, and many folks are seeing this interconnectivity for the very first time.

At Equality North Carolina, we hope you’ll join us within this intersectional lens and fight alongside us to build a world where all marginalized folks are afforded the same opportunities as those holding the most power and privilege. : :

Biden Secures Nomination

Primary Watch: Candidate Reaches Required Delegate Count for Democratic Presidential Nomination and Develops Plan to Capture Significant LGBTQ Vote

By Mykah Buff | qnotes Staff Writer While there are still more primaries scheduled to take place, Former Vice President Joe Biden has officially earned the number of pledged delegates in order to secure the Democratic nomination for president of the United States. On April 8 Biden became the presumptive nominee when Sen. Bernie Sanders, the last remaining candidate in the race at the time, suspended his campaign.

The news of Biden’s success of reaching the necessary number of delegates to become the Democratic presidential nominee followed the final count of the June 2 contests. That included New Mexico, Indiana, Maryland, Montana, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands. This day has now become coined as “Super Junesday” originating from a Tweet from politics reporter Grace Panetta in late March after a number of states rescheduled their primaries due to the ongoing threat of the coronavirus. Biden won 422 out of 452 delegates which brought his delegate count to 2,150, surpassing the required 1,991 delegate requirement for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Upon hearing the news of reaching the required delegate count to be the Democratic presidential nominee at the Democratic National Convention, which has been postponed to take place in Milwaukee sometime in midAugust, Biden expressed his feelings on his win.

Former Vice President Joe Biden captured enough delegate numbers to net the Democratic Party nomination as its candidate for president in the 2020 General Election.

fighting to earn the votes of Americans all across this great country so that, together, we can win the battle for the soul of this nation, and make sure that as we rebuild our economy, everyone comes along.”

Following Super Junesday, the primaries for Georgia, South Carolina, West Virginia, Nevada, and North Dakota took place on June 9. At press time Georgia and West Virginia were the only two states with available results with Biden winning 84.9 percent and Sanders with 9.4 percent in Georgia. In West Viriginia Biden took 65.4 percent of the vote, leaving Sanders with 12.1 percent.

Set to take place on June 23 are races for New York and Kentucky, leaving Delaware and New Jersey’s primary scheduled for July 7 and Louisiana on July 11.

Earlier this month, campaign officials told CBS News of Biden’s plans to capture the LGBTQ vote by bringing together a coalition of activists and politicians to pursue the U.S.’s estimated 11 million LGBTQ eligible voters through his outreach efforts dubbed “Out for Biden.”

“Former Vice President Joe Biden’s campaign is launching a nationwide voter outreach effort in June to coincide with Pride Month and engage millions of LGBTQ voters ahead of the November presidential election,” a campaign official told CBS News.

There is an estimated 772,000 possible votes from members of the LGBTQ community in Florida, 416,000 in Pennsylvania, and 311,000 in Michigan according to the Human Rights Campaign. : :

Black Lives Matter — Community Matters An Apology | A Statement of Support | Promote Dialogue | The Truth About Need

Apology Following the printing of our last issue, we made the terrible mistake of running a rainbow-colored “All Lives Matter” photo with the story “LGBTQ Organizations Unite to Combat Racial Violence” on our website and in our e-newsletter.

The photograph did not accompany the print version of this story. This error was immediately brought to our attention and the images were changed to reflect our understanding that this statement cannot be true until Black Lives Matter.

We recognize the gravity of this situation, and we apologize for using any image that may imply anything less than our full support and solidarity with the black community. We also stand with the current movement that we hope will bring about real change in our society.

Since our founding over 34 years ago, qnotes has expressed our deeply held belief that diversity, equity and inclusion are fundamental to our local reporting. These past few weeks, we have again been reminded that there is still much work to be done in our staff, our institutions, our city and our country. As the publisher of qnotes, I am saddened by the use of this image and its meaning. I stand committed to strengthening the voice of the black community through the pages of our paper and through our website.

Statement This newspaper and I personally, not only stand by the black community, we stand by the brown community and the transgender community. We stand by any marginalized and oppressed peoples. We also stand with the good people who work in law-enforcement. Especially our LGBTQ brothers and sisters.

With that said, we stand with our family friends and neighbors who protest against police brutality. We took the same stand in the 1980s when it was police policy to entrap men in our community. We have taken a stand many times in our pages. We stood against the late Sen.

Jesse Helms and many other political figures from the mayor’s office to the White House.

We deplore the tactics of rogue cops who murdered black and brown men and women. We deplore the use of chemical agents against protesters, and we understand the systematic racism that must be challenged. We stand with Martin Luther King, Jr. when he said “…somewhere I read of the freedom of assembly. Somewhere I read of the freedom of speech. Somewhere I read of the freedom of the press. Somewhere I read that the greatness of America is the right to protest for right.“ PromotE We as a society, both LGBTQ and the overall community, need to promote dialogue with those we have issues with. I believe that Charlotte Pride should have had an open dialogue with law enforcement before barring them from Pride events. People who have complained about qnotes not doing enough to cover the protest should open dialogue directly with us. In today’s society we often take to social media to combat each other rather than have dialogue and work together.

The City of Charlotte has a black mayor, a black police chief, a black sheriff and a black district attorney. Where has the dialogue been, on both sides, all the time these folks have been in office?

I have found that the saying “hurting people, hurt people” is so true. We all have to find ways in which to heal our pain. Sometimes that is with a simple conversation.

In the words of Maya Angelou, “You may not control the events that happened to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them.” Let us not reduce ourselves by hurting others when we can be a true community and work together by simply communicating with each other.

I then ask that if qnotes does something wrong — feel free to tell me. Hold me accountable. At the same time,

please do it with the community in mind. By working together, we have more strength. Pitting one against the other just creates more pain for us all.

Whether you’re a black person in pain or an LGBTQ police officer in pain or a staff person working hard to serve you, all deserve the opportunity for dialogue — the simple process of talking and listening.

Truth Finally, some people complain that we don’t do enough. I agree. I want to do more. I want to have reporters on the ground with photographers and videographers to tell the stories that we, and you, are passionate about.

Providing important news in order for you to have the facts about what is going on in our community has always been our mission.

I want to have daily stories on our website. I want to stream video of important issues. I want to have a larger and more diverse staff. I recognize the need for our presence and the importance of local media. LGBTQ local media is especially paramount. No one can tell our story, our truth, like we can ourselves. It is vital to our democracy that we continue our struggle to cover the news of the day.

It takes resources.

If you don’t think we do enough, help out. Complaining doesn’t get any of us anywhere. One story costs between $50 and $250. The printer bill is it about $2,000. The cost of distribution for one issue is about $1,100. I could go on, however, I think you get the point. I push the resources to the limit, and I will do all that I can do with what we have. What can or will you do to ensure that you have this vital resource?

news Advocates Continue the Fight Online for HIV Virtually Speaks on Jones Street 2020

RALEIGH, N.C. — Patients, healthcare providers, community leaders and advocates continued their advocacy online on June 10 for HIV Virtually Speaks on Jones Street 2020, the annual statewide HIV and hepatitis advocacy day. The event is traditionally held at the North Carolina General Assembly in Raleigh, but transitioned to a virtual format due to the COVID-19 pandemic. HIV Virtually Speaks on Jones Street 2020 served as an opportunity for advocates to raise awareness and educate North Carolina legislators about policies that improve the lives of people living with HIV and AIDS. The event was hosted by the North Carolina AIDS Action Network. The Crape Myrtle Festival was the presenting sponsor of for this year’s advocacy day.

“HIV Speaks on Jones Street is one of my favorite days of the year,” said Lee Storrow, executive director of NC AIDS Action Network. “Even though we were online and not in person, there was a dynamic energy

amongst the advocates assembled from across North Carolina.”

Advocates gathered online in the morning for a legislative briefing and training on various issues impacting people living with HIV and hepatitis.

Following the morning briefing and training, advocates spent the day virtually meeting with policymakers on both the state and local levels. Jacquelyn Clymore, the state HIV/STD/viral hepatitis director, shared updates from the state on their work in the time of COVID-19 and on their plans moving forward. Sen. Jeff Jackson and Carrboro Town Council Member Damon Seils, were a few of the policymakers who heard stories from advocates and engaged in powerful conversations on issues important to the community.

During the legislative meetings, advocates urged their legislators to support HIV-related legislative priorities for the year, such as defending the HIV Medication Assistance Program, supporting syringe exchange programs and closing the coverage gap by expanding Medicaid in the state.

Nearly half of people living with HIV in the U.S. reside in the South, while the South also had the highest rates of both new HIV diagnoses and HIV-related deaths in the country. North Carolina is among the 10 U.S. states with the highest rates of new HIV and AIDS diagnoses and HIV-related deaths. Advocates are hopeful that the conversations started during HIV Virtually Speaks on Jones Street 2020 will provide an opportunity for the HIV and hepatitis communities to play a critical and active role in shaping policy impacting the people living with HIV and hepatitis in North Carolina, the organization shared. info: ncaan.org.

Union Filed Amicus Brief in the Case with SEIU, Jobs with Justice

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Supreme Court, in a ruling issued on June 16, affirmed that sex-based discrimination under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 includes sexual orientation and gender identity. The decision is significant because some Circuit Courts ruled that sex discrimination didn’t include sexual orientation or gender identity which left LGBTQ+ communities subject to “lawful” discrimination and harassment at work under federal law and in states that do not recognize these groups as protected classes in state anti-discrimination laws.

“This decision continues the fight to ensure that every worker has dignity on the job,” said James P. Hoffa, general president. “Every person who shows up for work deserves to be treated equally, fairly and with the respect they deserve. No one should face discrimination for their sexual orientation, identity or for any other reason.”

A negative court decision would have left the LGBTQ+ community vulnerable to lawful discrimination at the federal level and in most states where anti-discrimination statutes do not include sexual orientation or gender identity as protected classes.

The Teamsters Union, SEIU and Jobs with Justice filed an amicus brief in support of the plaintiff’s case that told the stories of women who work in non-traditional fields who have been labeled as transgender, bisexual or lesbian, even if they are not, as a form of harassment or discrimination. The brief showed that no clear or easy line can carve out discrimination on the basis of being LGBTQ+ from Title VII, as sometimes claims and stereotypes about what it means to be gay or transgender affect heterosexual and cisgendered people as well. The brief highlighted the experience of Teamsters Local Union 630 and Teamsters LGBTQ+ caucus member Laura McAdams.

“The relief this decision provides my LGBTQ+ community who has suffered so much discrimination in the workplace, is monumental,” said McAdams. “As one of the members of this community I can personally testify to the injustice that has prevailed and welcome a workplace that provides equality for all. Thank you to the six Supreme Court justices who helped millions of Americans and thank you IBT.” The Teamsters Human Rights and Diversity Commission (HRDC) was established by the Hoffa administration to ensure that all Teamsters communities have a voice in the union.

“The Supreme Court has finally confirmed what we have known for a long time, every worker is entitled to a workplace free of discrimination,” said Marcus King, director of the Teamsters HRDC. “The right of every worker to do their job without judgement or abuse because of their sexual orientation or gender identity is now codified by the courts.”

Prior to the surprise decision, the Teamsters LGBTQ+ Caucus was preparing its members to start moving state legislation to include sexual orientation and gender identity, and also place it in collective bargaining agreement Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) clauses.

While this is no longer necessary for employees covered by Title VII, the work continues for public sector employees who live in states that may not adopt the Supreme Court’s interpretation when applying state anti-discrimination laws.

“For years, members of unions have worked to have collective bargaining agreements with protections for LGBTQ+ people,” said Margo Storsteen, President of the Teamsters LGBTQ+ Caucus. “The Supreme Court’s decision strengthens our belief that every worker is valued.” info: teamster.org.

Town hosts Pride celebration

Inspire ENC moved their first Pride festival online on June 20 via Facebook, The Daily News reported. The celebration was created to bring unity to Kinston and Eastern North Carolina. Kinston Mayor Dontario Hardy recently proclaimed June as Pride Month in Kinston to celebrate the rights of the LGBTQ community, the news organization added.

Greensboro gala canceled

The 2020 Guilford Green Foundation Gala has been officially canceled, organizers announced. The event was slated for July 18. The safety of the community was considered of importance over hosting the annual event. To help offset the shortfall from the canceled gala, contributions are being accepted to defray the operational costs of the organization. Those who had already purchased tickets are being asked to consider their transaction a gift to Guilford Green. Tax receipt letters will be mailed out to holders beginning on July 1. LGBT Chamber Opens Small Business Command Center in East Charlotte Initiative to Provide Valuable Information in Wake of COVID-19

BY Tonya Jameson | QNotes Contributor CHARLOTTE, N.C. — In a week marked by controversy over police treatment of protestors, and the upcoming Republican National Convention, a ray of sunshine peaked through the clouds on the East side. The Charlotte LGBT Chamber of Commerce cut the ribbon on a small business command center.

Gathered at the Charlotte Museum of History, representatives from the LGBT Chamber, Regional Business Alliance, East and West Charlotte associations along with members of the Charlotte City Council announced the arrival of the Small Business Recovery & Readiness Center. The organization provides information for small businesses trying to survive the financial impact of the quarantine and social distancing policies resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. qnotes first reported on the LGBT Chamber’s initiative in the April 9 issue. The Chamber, in collaboration with Charlotte Mecklenburg Black Chamber, Latin American Chamber of Commerce of Charlotte and Carolinas Asian-American Chamber of Commerce, created supportCLT in response to COVID-19’s impact on small businesses. One of the core components was a hotline staffed remotely during business hours on weekdays. The hotline staffing will now be at an actual center housed at the Charlotte Museum of History. And there is a new website, ReadyCLT, which focuses on helping businesses re-open. The supportCLT website still provides resources for assistance with grants, loans and unemployment.

ReadyCLT was created to help small businesses navigate the three phases of Gov. Roy Cooper’s pandemic plan. The goal is to help these businesses get back to where they were before the pandemic, said Chad Turner, president of the LGBT Chamber. The organization will provide resources on sourcing protective personal equipment for businesses, timeline updates and information about best practices in re-opening and adapting to doing business during a pandemic.

“This is a great opportunity to partner with the city of Charlotte, particularly our small business community,” said Charlotte City Council member James Mitchell. “We’re just so excited, not only about the partnership, but with the results. As always, we’re doing it the Charlotte way — we’re collaborating.”

Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Dianne Feinstein and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer — are leading a call for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to bring the Equality Act to the Senate floor for a vote. The senators’ push comes after the Supreme Court issued a 6-3 ruling to confirm that the nation’s landmark civil rights legislation preventing workplace discrimination protects LGBTQ Americans.

WNC celebrates Pride

The organization applied for a city grant to pay call center volunteers and revamp the website. Turner said he plans to staff the call center with workers who have been displaced as a result of the pandemic.

“The true small business has never been reflected very well in these sort of business organizations,” said Bruce Nofsinger, a small business owner for 25 years. “The small business coalition is a long time coming. It kind of took COVID-19 and that disruption to make it happen.”

One of the most impressive elements of the LGBT Chamber initiative has been the organization’s ability to pull people together.

SCOTUS Decision Shocks Local Gay Community Employment Playing Field Changed, Protections Affirmed

By Tonya Jameson | QNotes Contributor CHARLOTTE, N.C. — On June 15, the Supreme Court of the United States voted in favor of LGBTQ workplace rights in a landmark decision.

No one saw this coming. The fight to protect LGBTQ individuals in the workplace seemed unwinnable, especially in this judicial era. But to everyone’s surprise, the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) declared discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity illegal on Monday, June 15.

Unlike the highly anticipated historic ruling to protect same-sex marriage five years ago this month, yesterday’s ruling caught many legal observers and LGBTQ activists by surprise. After all, the Supreme Court now has a 5-4 conservative majority. It includes one justice who was accused of sexual harassment and another who was accused of sexual assault. This definitely did not seem like a court that would be open to protecting gays and lesbians in the workplace, but it did just that in a 6-3 ruling this week. The decision was a bright spot in a year that has been marked by a pandemic and civil unrest over police brutality.

Autumn Austin, a Charlotte political operative who supports liberal candidates, said that when she heard the news she felt relief and “pure happiness.”

“Twenty-twenty has been utterly awful. There has been so much bad news and so to see something positive, in this moment, felt like a huge weight lifted off of me,” she said. “I am LGBT and I know all of the people involved in this case who have been fighting so hard. It felt like an historic moment for the country as a whole, but mostly my population and that felt good.

“It is hard to fathom that in 2020, we would still be having this conversation,” she added. Austin wants to be protected in the workplace, but she works for liberal organizations and political candidates. It is a little easier for her, but she said she thinks about others who may be at higher risk; especially those working in corporate settings or the

transgender family. She said she is happiest for them.

Experts say Monday’s decision will have ripple effects throughout the country.

“People are going to be able to be themselves at work,” said Charlotte attorney Connie Vetter. “Their co-workers will get to know them for who they are. It’s harder to hate other people when you actually know who they are.”

As a young attorney, Vetter was often forced to tell clients that they did not have any legal recourse if they believed that they had been terminated because of their sexual orientation or identity. North Carolina is a right-towork state and sexual orientation was not protected. This ruling changes that.

“Federal civil rights law prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex, and you cannot talk about discrimination based on sexual orientation, based on gender identity without talking about sex. It’s all talking about sex,” she

said explaining the ruling. The Supreme Court decision means that the term “sex” includes sexual orientation and gender identity. This ruling says you cannot fire people for being an LGBTQ individual. It supports what activists have been saying all along, that sexual orientation and gender identity are completely unrelated to one’s ability to do one’s job.

It is likely that the legal interpretation will impact areas outside of employment, which was the basis for this lawsuit. For example, Monday’s ruling came after Friday’s announcement that the Trump administration was erasing Obama-era regulations prohibiting discrimination in healthcare against patients who are transgender. It is unclear how Monday’s ruling will impact the Trump administration’s new policies.

Maurice Falls, a former Charlotte teacher, is still digesting this week’s victory. He knows what it is like to not be yourself in the workplace. He quit working as a seventh grade social studies teacher because he said he enured extreme harassment and a lack of support around his sexual identity. He said he was routinely called faggot by students, and bullied and threatened in the classroom. When he complained to the school’s administrators, he said that he did not receive any support. Falls recalled that students were also targeted with anti-gay slurs.

“It just kind of broke me,” he said.

“As a teacher once you start talking about your sexuality, it becomes taboo. You get all of these cues from your leaders that we’re not going to talk about it,” he continued. “You have to work in a way that’s not authentic. Even though we’re a freer society in a lot of ways; in our workplaces there’s still unwritten rules.”

Those unwritten rules are the ones that prevent gay employees from putting photos of their same-sex partners or spouses on their desks or bringing a same-sex partner to work events. The SCOTUS ruling opens the closet door a little wider and invites more LGBTQ individuals to step out. : :

Cops Respond to Charlotte Pride Barring of Law Enforcement from Annual Event Local Officer Said ‘It Broke Me Down’

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Officer Jess Zinobile has attended Charlotte Pride festivities for the last five or six years, but last year was special. She and her girlfriend stood on Tryon St. in front of RiRa’s with their three children, ages six and seven. They waited for members of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) to walk past in the parade.

The officers wore navy T-shirts with a CMPD logo and rainbow stickers. They walked behind the First Responders Unit Pride banner along with the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Department, Charlotte Fire Department and MEDIC. Zinobile, a CMPD officer for 15 years, recalled seeing the smiling faces as her fellow officers walked and waved. They were parade participants, not keepers of public safety. Cheers erupted from the audience. A couple of Zinobile’s buddies gave their kids police stickers. The little ones beamed.

Pride probably will not feel the same for Zinobile and her family next year.

Last week, Charlotte Pride announced that it would no longer allow the participation of law enforcement agencies as vendors or marching contingents in the parade.

Along with the announcement, Charlotte Pride issued a resolution stating that the fight for black and brown lives is bound together with the fight for LGBTQ liberation. Along with barring law enforcement groups from participating as a unit in the parade, Charlotte Pride also is requesting that the police presence at the parade be less visible. They are calling for the discontinuation of the use of tear gas and for the redirection of police funds to invest in efforts to help marginalized communities.

The parade announcement was devastating to Zinobile and many of her fellow officers.

“I just broke down to Talisha [her partner]. “There’s been so much hate thrown our way as police officers those past couple of weeks,” she said. “For me to read about that within a community that I’ve always looked to for support. It broke me down.

“That’s why I’m determined to not stay silent anymore about this and speak out from a law enforcement standpoint and try to bridge this gap for everyone to support gay pride again.”

What makes it even harder for officers like Zinobile is that the announcement took members of CMPD and the Sheriff’s Department by surprise.

“We got blindsided,” said Sheriff Garry McFadden.

His department features a Charlotte Pride banner on its website. McFadden also wanted to have a patrol vehicle painted in rainbow colors.

“I think we were blindsided,” echoed CMPD Major Sherie Pearsall.

“We hadn’t had any conversation.”

The lack of communication was particularly stinging. Both departments have LGBTQ committees that address internal issues, as well as interact with gay and lesbian organizations. Each touts efforts to provide better outreach and communications between law enforcement and the LGBTQ communities.

Pearsall recalls a time that being gay and out in the police department was taboo.

“Back then it was like you better find you a closet and stay in it,” said Pearsall, who joined the department 26 years ago.

A lot of members of CMPD identify as LGBTQ, she said. The department formed the LGBTQ engagement committee after several officers expressed concerns about their treatment inside the department. the conversation turned to how they could move the conversation forward to address LGBTQ issues. That is something that is traditionally not talked about in law enforcement, she said. Members realized that if there was a problem internally, then it likely affected how they responded to calls for service.

As a Time Out Youth Center board member, Pearsall often heard complaints from young people about how they felt about the police department. The committee began working with LGBTQ youth as a starting point to get involved. That effort has grown into leadership training for officers and educating officers about the LGBTQ community. The committee also acts as a resource for officers who may be dealing with the LGBTQ community in their patrol areas.

As the committee’s engagement grew, members suggested that they become more engaged in the Pride festival beyond public safety. They submitted an application and got accepted to walk in last year’s parade, which commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots.

“On a scale of excitement they were overjoyed about that,” Pearsall said. “It meant a lot to those being able to walk. It was a defining moment.”

It is ironic that CMPD joined the parade for the commemoration of the Stonewall Riots, protests against police raids in Greenwich Village in 1969.

The first Pride marches were held as a reminder of the struggle for equal rights for gays and lesbians. Prides were a form of protest. They were marches, not parades.

Matt Comer, communications director for Charlotte Pride, said the organization received requests over the years to return Pride to its protest roots. Barring police participation in the parade moves the organization closer to those roots, he said. see next page u

He has publicly criticized the decision as divisive and not reflective of the relationship that his department has with the gay community or even elements of the black community. He notes that there is a Black Lives Matter banner hanging outside the front entrance of the detention center Uptown.

Comer said people in law enforcement are welcome to participate in Pride activities, but not as representatives of their departments.

“Our action is not targeted toward an individual law enforcement agency. It’s not targeted to human beings who might

happen to be employed as law enforcement officers. It’s certainly not targeted toward individual members of the LGBTQ community who might happen to work for a law enforcement agency,” Comer said. “It is an institutional response to an overarching response to an institutional problem of police brutality and violence that has gone for too long unaddressed.”

The reaction to Pride’s decision has been mixed based on feedback on the organization’s Facebook page. Feedback on McFadden’s page has been overwhelmingly supportive of him and his department. Zinobile also posted about it on her personal Facebook page, expressing that

she was heartbroken. Friends posted their support for her and other officers, vowing to boycott next year’s parade.

That’s not what she wants.

“I want us all to be able to come together,” Zinobile said.

Asking police officers to attend the parade without representing their departments is like asking them to go back into the closet, she said.

“You’ve got this group that’s supposed to be accepting of all races and backgrounds, but they’re saying ‘hey, you can’t come,’” she said. “To discriminate against another group is against everything the LGBTQ community stands for.

“Events like Pride are the perfect place to recruit future CMPD officers.

Law enforcement needs more people who are open-minded and welcoming to make the type of changes that Pride organizers are calling for,” she said.

Instead of barring officers, Zinobile said she wished Pride organizers had arranged a meeting between the various groups to facilitate a meaningful discussion. She hopes something like this can still happen in the future. Pearsall also hopes this moment will lead to meaningful conversations.

“We’re frustrated, we’re upset, we’re saddened,” Pearsall said, “[But] It’s important to everyone involved that we get this right. I don’t think that all bets are off.

Gay Campgrounds Offer Additional Appeal During COVID-19

T

he sounds of nature are calling as we slowly venture out after months of lockdown. Campfires and cookouts. Quiet nights gazing into the night sky.

While the travel and tourism market has taken a hit from COVID-19, the RV market is reportedly seeing an uptick as people anxious to travel seek out new and safe options. But many are asking what the new rules are. Is it safe to go outdoors to camping resorts during the coronavirus pandemic?

Economist Richard Curtin told the Chicago Tribune that people “see an RV as a way of getting outside in a safe and secure environment they can control.” Many are still shying away from airports and hotels. An RV provides the opportunity to cook for yourself, control your interaction with others, and have all the benefits of travel, with a little more social distance style.

Renting a standard motorhome from Cruise America in Charlotte will run you about $290 for three nights over the July 4th holiday weekend. That model sleeps five, includes a gas cooktop, generator, refrigerator, microwave and full bathroom facilities. The more compact option that sleeps three is $213 and the largest model is $307. Websites like RVShare.com and outdoorsy.com offer cheaper options from private owners, similar to popular peer-to-peer marketplaces like Airbnb.

There are a few things you must keep in mind when venturing out on an RV expedition. Many campgrounds have limited facilities, and gay campgrounds that often entice us with themed weekends, pool parties and entertainment have had to adjust the rules and their schedules to keep guests safe.

“We are currently open,” says Michael Brooks at Timberfell Lodge and Campground in Greeneville, Tenn.

“We are following the CDC guidelines. We have signage up throughout the property that recommends the social distancing of 6 feet or more.” The campground has also increased their cleaning and sanitation, with sanitizing stations set up throughout the property.

But business has not yet started booming for the maleonly, clothing-optional retreat. When asked how different this season has been, Brooks quickly points out that there is no comparison. “We really don’t feel like we’ve even started our season yet,” he says. “It’s just a peculiar time.”

Timberfell is starting to see folks return, however, and their event weekends tend to be the biggest draw for people yearning to get back to some sort of socialization. “We just had an event this past weekend, and it was really well attended,” says Brooks. While they have had to cancel, or postpone, some previously scheduled events, Timberfell has two big weekends coming up, and spots are available for both. At In the Woods, things have been less interrupted.

When the original owner at this northeast Georgia campground died a year and a half ago, the campground made changes to focus on being a more traditional campground for the gay community. “Being one of the smaller campgrounds, our regular people have been coming,” says owner John Wargo.

Wargo now runs the 30-acre property himself with the help of volunteers. “The only thing I don’t have open for booking is our bunkhouse, which is a group accommodation.” The campground offers tent and RV sites, along with a swimming pool and private cabins. The pool is currently limited to 15 people at a time and areas are marked off with six-foot sections to encourage social distancing.

One benefit to travelers now is the added discounts you might find during the pandemic. To help encourage tourism, many of the campgrounds are offering special rates, including In the Woods, which is not charging holiday prices this year during the summer. “We’re laid back and quiet, which is why the people coming here like it,” says Wargo.

If you are ready to start venturing out, the important thing is to check-in with your campground ahead of time and stay informed of current guidelines to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Camping provides some additional control over how much interaction you have with others, and I would agree that some soothing outdoor relaxation might help ease the anxiety that has been caused by the previous few months.

COVID-19 Redraws the 2020 LGBTQ Travel Roadmap CMI Survey Shows Current Trends

W

hen Dorothy returned from Oz and declared, “There’s no place like home,” that dewy tribute to domesticity made sense, coming from a Kansas farm girl recently abducted by flying monkeys and repeatedly threatened by a wicked witch.

But what if Auntie Em, instead of oozing empathy, informed her that she awoke to a changed world, told her to put on a mask, and delivered the devastating news that the big square dance was canceled because of social distancing concerns? Flash forward three months, and the poor girl is staring out the window, hoping to hitch a ride on the next twister out of town.

Friends of Dorothy feel her pain, and they’re aware the prospect of summer travel requires a new type of yellow brick road — one that will take them over the rainbow and back, free to venture out into the world without putting their lives, or anyone else’s, at risk.

Mindful of this new mindset, a mid-May survey by veteran LGBTQ research firm Community Marketing & Insights (CMI) yielded the recently released report, “COVID-19 and LGBTQ Travel in 2020” (available free, at cmi.info).

Comprised of data from an online survey of 1,864 self-identified members of America’s LGBTQ community, ages 20-70, the report found 69 percent of participants “indicated extreme or moderate pent-up desire to travel again for vacation,” although, at the time, 72 percent of the travelers in the study “have already canceled a vacation in 2020 because of COVID-19,” with cancellations being strongest for the March-July period. Of those who took a vacation in 2019, 68 percent plan to take at least one overnight vacation trip during the remainder of 2020, including 42 percent planning two or more vacations.

David Paisley, CMI senior research director, noted they’ve been doing an annual fall travel survey for 20 years, but adapted its timing and content to acknowledge COVID-19’s radical effect on the travel (and pretty much every other) landscape.

“The LGBTQ community very much does want to travel this summer,” noted Paisley, “but they’re in a little bit of a waiting mode.”

What we do know, as the report noted, is “the drop-off will be higher for more populated locations like big cities, with smaller reductions for outdoor and less-populated destinations.”

That translates into, said Paisley, “places where you can walk through neighborhoods and parks, and visit museums, which tend to be less crowded than a nightclub…

People are also much more open to short-term, car-based vacations, where they can make that decision a day in advance… It’s all about flexibility and keeping options open.”

Road trips are the getaways of choice for two New York City residents who are trading time quarantined on the island of Manhattan for time spent on… another island.

“I’m supposed to go camping [with friends] in the Adirondack Mountains, as I do the last week of June,” said producer/performer Peter Michael Marino, who noted,

“We won’t find out if the campsite is open until a week before. Sort of strange, since it’s outdoors in the middle of 9,000 square miles of forest.”

Marino says his group, which “normally crams into one car for the six-hour drive,” will be splitting up this year. “A couple in our group already had the virus, and they’ll drive together,” he explained. “The other two each live alone and have taken safety precautions all along, so we don’t feel terribly unsafe traveling together.”

Upon arrival at the lake campground, “We canoe to a small, isolated island the size of a suburban backyard, with just an outhouse and fire pit. We have plenty of space there and each have our own tents. And while we won’t be wearing masks on the island or coughing on each other, I think we’ll take great care not to directly share food and drink.” (Note: Several days after our interview, Marino canceled his vacation upon learning the campsite isn’t opening, because of COVID-19 concerns.)

For drag performer Porsche, aka Brant Kaiwi, the ferry to Fire Island found folks “with masks on and, from what I saw, keeping with their groups and distant from others.” The trip, taken the second weekend of June, was this season’s first for her, serving as fact-finding mission to the Island’s Cherry Grove hamlet — where Porsche will soon be resuming live performances, delving further into her second decade at the Grove Hotel’s Ice Palace nightclub.

“The Ice Palace is getting pretty creative with how to handle a fun crowd safely,” said Kaiwi/Porsche. “We are very lucky to have the outdoor and indoor space that we do, and it’s going to be fun! I don’t want to give it away just yet, but the way they are doing it, all guidelines

are being followed, and followed creatively.”

Don’t be afraid of traveling to LGBTQ-friendly places, she urged, but do “travel smartly to those destinations. Those vibrant, wonderful communities have already been hit hard by the pandemic, so by all means safely support!”

That yearning to be surrounded by the similarly inclined is especially strong right now.

“One of the great losses for the LGBTQ community this summer,” noted Paisley, “is the cancellation of [public] Pride events across the United States, which carries bigger emotional weight than the cancellation of other types of events.”

A normal summer, observed Rivendell Media president and CEO Todd Evans, “would mean lots of companies and events advertising for Pride, wanting to promote their event and trying to show the LGBTQ consumer is important to them.” But this year, says Evans, who places advertisements for the National LGBT Media Association, the usually robust presence of stalwart supporters is, thus far, nowhere to be found.

“Advertisers hate uncertainty,” noted Evans. “Nobody wants, ‘We might have a program, we might do that.’

The travel industry knows the LGBTQ market better than most. I’ve done a lot of inquiries, and my feeling is, they’re all getting ready, waiting until they have something solid to promote.”

Evans counts himself among those referenced in an early May 2020 Harris Poll travel survey that compared LGBTQ and non-LGBTQ travelers. The Harris research, CMI’s report noted, “seemed to support the resilience of the LGBTQ travel community.”

Said Evans, from anecdotal and personal perspectives, LGBTQ people “are more mobile, more ready, and willing to be the first, the same as it was after 9/11 and the [2008] recession.

“I’ve been home for three months,” he said, “and I have digital fatigue, as I am sure most people do. So I understand the itch to get out, to get away.” : :

Pandemic-Appropriate Day Trip Destinations Waterfalls, Beaches, Mountains, and More

o, how do you go about having a fun day trip with your family in the midst of a pandemic?

Given the statewide mandated restrictions, including a ban on gatherings of 10 people or more and maintaining a distance of at least six feet between yourself and others, a number of places families frequent may not be an option until the threat of COVID-19 has been addressed.

The coronavirus has affected just about every aspect of life for millions of people around the globe. And with North Carolina’s statewide efforts to keep the spread of the coronavirus under control by implementing certain, necessary precautions, having a worthwhile family day trip may be a bit challenging.

It has been several months since the initial outbreak of the virus, and communities are starting to adapt to the new way of life. Although, with so much restriction on traveling and congregating, it can be quite frustrating as you consider how to maintain a sense of normalcy for you and your family while also being safe.

Based on a recent survey by the travel and tourism crowdsourcing website, bebevoyage. com, “people’s idea of travel has changed.” Sixty-nine participants submitted responses about their thoughts on travel amid the pandemic. These responses were then analyzed and broken down into statistics providing a snapshot of how people’s attitudes and behaviors regarding travel have changed since the outbreak of the coronavirus.

“Over 46 percent of respondents answered in the affir-

mative that their idea of travel had changed,” said bebevoyage.com. “Around 32 percent of respondents weren’t quite sure if their ideas had changed and over 52 percent of respondents answered that they still planned to travel around the same amount in the future.”

The section of the survey pertaining to the amount of travel showed a refocusing of how people travel, said bebevoyage.com. 26.4 percent answered that they’ll travel close

to home, 17.6 percent will focus on staycations, and 21.1 percent will travel less often, which could possibly mean longer more intentional vacations, the website added.

Some options that people may enjoy are suitable for following the guidelines of social distancing.

Various online travel websites say North Carolina is filled with different natural treasures with waterfalls being one of the most sought out. “North Carolina has long since been known for its lush, natural beauty with hiking trails that showcase some of the state’s most alluring waterfalls,” onlyinourstate.com says. In addition to a waterfall tour, there are also 10 destinations in North Carolina that have a reputation for being secluded and desolate. According to online reports these 10 locations are free from crowds and offer a peaceful and quiet experience: Cape Hatteras, Lake Glenville, Roan Mountain, Ocracoke Island, Croatan National Forest, Grandfather Trail, and Grandfather Mountain, Mingo Falls, Linville Gorge, Hammocks Beach, State Park, and Carova. Ask Brian: How Can I Reinvent Myself?

‘Coming Out’ of COVID-19

hether it was something you started brainstorming right away or something that occurred to you somewhere along in the quarantined state of the world, “How can I use this time to reinvent myself?” is likely a question you’ve thought about in the past however many weeks or so. We are in the slow but sure process of unfreezing things, and that thawing process coincidentally is coinciding with Pride season. I feel it’s a good time to discuss how the queer community specifically can “come out” of this stronger as our resilient type tend to do after trying times.

I remember when I finally came out of the closet during my senior year of college, I wanted the world to stop for a moment. At that time, when the truth about who I was became non-negotiable, I didn’t know that coming out is actually a healing process. I didn’t know that I would have to spend the next chapter of my life battling 14 years of internalized homophobia and discovering a rejected self that was hidden in shame. Instead, I just waltzed into my 20s completely out of tune with who I was and with very little time to figure it out. I had to navigate my new role as a gay man while finishing college, getting a job, ending a relationship, moving into my first apartment, and all the while having to provide status updates to friends and family that were anything but reflective of what was going on inside.

During this healing chapter I didn’t know I was entering, the most important improvements on my relationship with myself have come during the quiet moments. They’ve often arrived right when I’ve started to slow down, or even more often when I’ve crashed and burned from going too fast.

They’ve arrived on nights where I was alone with nothing but my own thoughts and feelings to keep me company.

And they’ve arrived in the form of hurt. When I look back at

some of the perceived tragedies of my 20s, I see that they were actually the biggest moments of growth.

Quiet. Loneliness. Tragedy. Does any of the above sound familiar? Look, we all know at its core that this pandemic is a bad thing with a negative impact. It comes with so many unanswered questions and troubling concerns.

But I’d like to propose an additional way of looking at it, and that is as the healing time that I, and perhaps we, have been waiting for.

If you think about what being in the closet is, it’s a form of compartmentalization where we disassociate from aspects of ourselves that don’t feel important or worthy enough to present to the world. Those beautifully valid parts of our being get tucked away in the back of our mind and covered with lies, and then when the lies get removed, there’s still shame and so then we cover up even more with busy schedules and vibrant social lives and beautiful photos of ourselves posted on Instagram so that no one has to see or deal with the real core of the problem which generally tends to be a lack of love for ourselves. After all, we don’t know who it is that we are loving because we haven’t had the chance to heal. The amount of instant pride we expect from those that come out as LGBTQ after living an incomplete life is basically what it’d be like to ask a brand new dancer to perform triple pirouettes proudly even though they’ve never tried anything like that before.

If this time of being quarantined has been particularly difficult for you, a good question to ask is, “Why?” Pay attention to what comes up. Is it something you’ve been avoiding? For me, some of the difficult moments have been the uncomfortable ones where I’ve realized how many aspects of myself were still being skipped over with the hustle and bustle of normal life. When these thoughts and feelings get

uncovered after years of collecting dust, they can be a bit surprising. And as anyone who’s ever been in a haunted house knows, not all surprises feel good.

I love Pride season. I love getting my shortest shorts on and coordinating tank top colors with my friends. I love partying and celebrating a part of myself I never thought I’d even acknowledge, never mind flaunt around the West Village. It’s okay to grieve the loss of all that. But what if this June is a little less about pride and a little more about healing? It is yourself that you should be most proud of anyway so who better to celebrate it with than you.

Perhaps, if we get a little quiet with ourselves this year, we can be even louder and prouder next year than we’ve ever been before.

I wrote this piece prior to the recent current events involving the Black Lives Matter movement. I want to add that I stand in full support of that message, and I encourage everyone inside and outside the LGBTQ community to get loud and take the action needed against racial injustice. Let us remember, though, what the lesbian American writer, feminist, womanist, librarian, and civil rights activist Audre Lorde said, “Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation and that is an act of political warfare.” On the topic of healing, it’s clear that America needs just as much healing as prescribed above for LGBTQ persons, if not more. Let us make sure we lead that effort by doing that work on ourselves while we stand up for what we believe in. Stand Up! Show Up! Wherever You Travel Spiritual Reflections

hat does travel look like this summer? The year 2020 presents unusual circumstances in the midst of global civil rights protests and the COVID-19 pandemic. In late May and early June, the murders of African-Americans at the hands of whites played out on televisions, cell phones, tablets, computers and other devices around the world.

The horrific deaths captured on videos and viral infections converged to create a perfect storm that has blown apart any illusions or misconceptions we may have held about justice and equity in the United States and beyond. I speak the names of those most recently murdered. Ahmad Arberry. Breonna Taylor. George Floyd. Tony McDade.

In response to inhumane, vile treatment of AfricanAmericans, thousands of protestors have taken to the streets in the U.S. and nations around the world. Signs with slogans are held up with messages for world leaders that reflect the outrage, concerns and fears of people who are fed up with the status quo. Two that I encourage you to reflect upon are: “Black Lives Matter,” and “Am I Next?” You see, black lives seem not to matter, and any of us could be next because hatred and fear of the “other” is inherent in the national psyche. However, change is on the horizon. The culmination of 400 years of aggression and oppression have erupted into a global movement.

Again, what does travel look like this summer? Let’s look at a few scenarios. Some travel may be urgent and necessary in the current environment, but undoubtedly, many travel plans have been altered or canceled in light of disruptions in the travel and tourism industries. If you plan to shelter in place or enjoy staycations closer to home, consider donating the vacation funds you budgeted to local grassroots organizations that serve communities of color

No matter where you travel, always take a stand for important issues and show your support for social justice causes.

impacted by COVID-19. Many of these agencies are underfunded due to lack of “the right connections” or barriers in application processes. Yet, they continue to provide basic needs to individuals and families disproportionally affected by the pandemic. [Job losses and disparities in all major social categories are significantly higher in African-American communities than those of whites.] Your financial assistance can provide critical care to those most in need.

For those who intend to travel and vacation despite the current circumstances, I offer the following suggestions for your consideration.

1. B e intentional about researching and supporting blackowned businesses as you plan your travel. Travel agents

are an excellent resource for booking transportation and lodging. Many of the agencies are sole-proprietorships owned and operated by African-Americans.

2. Be sure to include African-American museums and historic stops on your itinerary when touring cities such as Washington, DC, Atlanta, Ga., New Orleans, La., and other major urban areas.

3. Include items in your wardrobe that speak to your solidarity with and support of communities that have been marginalized and denied basic rights in this country.

4. Be aware of your surroundings. Violence against AfricanAmericans and LGBTQ members of our community is real and pervasive throughout the nation.

Whatever your plans for summer travel might be, remember to stay encouraged and stay in the press for change. Reflect on how you can use your platform, your privilege, your position, your wealth, your creativity and your gifts in this process. Remember to stay connected with your faith community or network of positive people.

And we want the healing that reaches beyond ourselves to ‘right-doing’ in our country and in our world. We know that neither corporations nor the government are up to it. We are our own salvation. That’s life. The one trick of staying longer on top than in the gutter is to STAY BUSY! When we’re busy we don’t have time for depression. This advice column which is now in its 19th year directly came out of needing to beat a winter depression.

So, pumpkin, start small with a one-hour home project, then a half-day cooking or painting activity, then a weekend retreat.

“The Extremely Busy Woman’s Guide to Self-Care”

You’ve ensured that everyone is safe and happily occupied. Elders have groceries, errands are done and you keep in touch with the people you miss. You’re taking good care of everyone around you — but as in the new book “The Extremely Busy Woman’s Guide to Self-Care” by Suzanne Falter, who’s taking care of you?

In the last three months, if you’ve learned one important thing, it’s this: when it comes to doing for others, you are not a bottomless well. You give and give and give, but lately, you find yourself running empty.

Something similar happened to Falter: after her daughter, Teal, died, she began to feel that nothing had meaning anymore and that the life she’d “cobbled together” wasn’t what she wanted. She’d left her husband and come out as a lesbian, but that was all she’d done for herself. She ran out of energy for everyone else and everything.

Desperate for something better, she quit working (which, she admits, isn’t an option for everybody). She started listen-

ing harder to herself and to others. She started asking herself what she wanted out of each new day she’d been given.

And from that sprang an awesome life.

If you’re depleted, she says, there are “essentials” you’ll need to heal, starting with plenty of sleep, exercise and avoidance of food, drink or substances that aren’t good for you. Be open to love, but make yourself a priority. Learn to lean on friends and family; in fact, find an “action buddy” to help you get through. Take real time off — not just a turn-off-the-phonefor-the-evening time, but real vacations away. Learn to meditate or, at the very least, to sit quietly with yourself. Look for fun now and then and use it to “feed your brain.” Finally, once you’ve found the “essentials” that seem to work best for you, learn to implement them into your daily life.

“Get help where needed,” Falter says, “for that may make all the difference.”

Page through “The Extremely Busy Woman’s Guide to Self-Care,” and you may notice that this book is very new-agey.

Very new-agey, as in: “New-Agey” should be on the cover in four-foot-tall neon letters. You might also notice that if you’re an “extremely busy woman,” this book will make life even busier.

Filled with worksheets and demands to “breathe,” there’s a lot to do here to get this books’ full use. That doesn’t make it unhelpful: for anyone at the end of her corona-rope without a knot, it may be a complacency-squasher. Author Suzanne Falter writes with the voice of authority when discussing how she clawed her way back from the brink, using loss as a springboard for many of her best points — but beware: some of those points are from “Teal’s Journal,” making it more... new-agey.

Still, for the reader who desperately needs quick bites of help in a hand-holding, alternative, worksheet-loaded format, “The Extremely Busy Woman’s Guide to Self-Care” may be the ticket. If that’s advice you truly need, take it. : :

Miners Miracle

An Interview with Daniel Burton of Early Day Miners

DB: Wow, well that’s a huge compliment. It’s something that we had just found that year and we were like, “Oh, my God!” I’ll probably put it on tonight, now that you mentioned it.

s musical genres go, slowcore (or sadcore, if you please) had its share of devotees and detractors.

Early Day Miners’ 2000 debut album “Placer Found” (Secretly Canadian), was newly reissued, remixed and remastered for vinyl in an expanded 20th anniversary double LP set, including more than 15 minutes of previously unreleased material. The band took its rightful place alongside its musical contemporaries. But “Placer Found” also featured ambient and cinematic Brian Eno-esque soundscapes that set it apart from the rest.

Something else that set Early Day Miners apart was gay front-man Daniel Burton. Burton, who now lives in New Orleans with his longtime partner, was kind enough to answer a few questions recently.

GS: I particularly like the instrumental “In These Hills” which sounds very Enoesque to me. Where does Brian Eno fall on your list of influences?

DB: He’s right up there. The first substantial record I bought was [U2’s] “The Joshua Tree” [co-produced by Brian Eno]. I got my subscription to Rolling Stone and delved into reading about this producer, Brian Eno, as well as Daniel Lanois. Later in my life I ended up doing an internship with Lanois for a few months. It was an awesome, peculiar, cool time. It was at Teatro, this closedup Spanish porn theater in Oxnard, Calif. that he had converted into a recording studio. Yes, [both are] huge influences, especially Lanois.

Gregg Shapiro: Dan, for the uninitiated, please say something about the genesis of the band’s name, Early Day Miners.

Dan Burton: Way back in 1997, I worked in Yellowstone National Park for a summer. There was an interesting mining town called Silver Gate on the northwest corridor entrance to Yellowstone Park, between the Beartooth Mountain Pass and another mountain pass, and it gets snowed-in six months out of the year. I fell in love with this idea of this place that gets isolated every year for half a year and has a population of maybe 200 people.

They had a tourism brochure that they created, and it said “Early Day Miners” on the front, and it had a picture of these sexy-looking miners on it. I thought, “That would be a cool album cover. That would be a cool band name.” Friends agreed and that’s kind of how it came about [laughs].

GS: At the beginning of the band’s tenure, Early Day Miners was associated with the slowcore/sadcore scene. Can you please say something about that affiliation and what meaning it has to you?

DB: As an undergrad at Indiana University, I was in a band called Ativin, which was just two guitars and drums, very minimalist. We were influenced by a lot of stuff that we saw growing up in Louisville. That band broke up, and the drummer in Early Day Miners and I were becoming more interested in conventional song form but also exploding that out. Keeping it minimal, but exploring an idea of space and sense of place. Making music that isn’t necessarily for movies but is inspired by film soundtracks.

It was a concept and fun. It was exciting to play it live.

We were kind of a divisive band live, so it was interesting to see half the place leave and the other half come up to the stage [laughs]. That was in 1999/2000 and in this day and age, there are so many bands that are pushing the envelope: The War on Drugs and Mogwai. It’s been going on for 20+ years now where you can have fun with song form, and it doesn’t matter. Have 10-minute songs like LCD Soundsystem; which is fantastic. It wasn’t like we were reinventing the wheel, but it’s nice to go back 20 years and listen to “Placer Found.” There’s a certain naivete to it that I gravitate to. We never expected it to do anything. We recorded it at home by ourselves and sent it to my friend in Austin who put it out on a small label there, Western Vinyl.

It got this kind of cult following, and we were able to tour for it and put out seven more albums after.

GS: As you referenced, “Placer Found,” which has been given a vinyl reissue on Secretly Canadian, was released 20 years ago. Where did the time go, Dan? DB: Oh, my God! No kidding. It’s such a great point. We put out records for 10 years after that. Had some great tours in Europe and a lot of success with it. Then I came out of the closet, had a baby at that exact time, and a full nervous breakdown. Ultimately, it was a wonderful thing that it all happened the way it did. I’m very close with my ex. Kind of a “Modern Family” thing, which is unexpected.

I went to school for landscape architecture and now I’m a practicing landscape architect in New Orleans. Also, now that I work for myself, that enabled me to jump back in [to

GS: Are there specific Early Day Miner songs where you think your identity as a gay man came across, either subtly or overtly?

DB: Yes. It was subtle. It was never super intentional within the later albums, “The Treatment” and “Night People.” I’ve always had a disinterest in being overtly political or overt [laughs], in general, lyrically. As I said earlier, that’s somewhat changed now. I like leaving lyrical form where a listener can extract something from it and make their own meaning. It’s something I love that artists do. But it’s inevitable that pop music itself is innately sexual, and it became fun. With “Night People,” at that point the band had become a new band, and I was the only original member. These guys were into everything from Scissor Sisters to the Rolling Stones; just being glam. Watch videos of us from “The Treatment,” and it’s certainly not Scissor Sisters, but for us, picking up a shaker or tambourine was like, whoa [laughs]! We’re not naïve to it completely. All the Eno stuff from the seventies, and Roxy Music and Lou Reed and David Bowie; that’s stuff I’ve had since middle school.

Now we have this reissue, and we’re currently working on a full-length [album], it’s great; I get to do both things now.

GS: When you look back on the album, what are you proudest of and what would you have done differently?

DB: That’s an awesome question! Part of the [reason for] the reissue of the album was that I wasn’t pleased with the mixing or the mastering of the original record because we had zero cash and zero access to technology. It was a great opportunity to revisit the tracks which I found in my mom’s basement and was able to extract from digital audiotape. Which was incredible because after the 20 yearmark they completely deteriorate, if not before. That was a stroke of luck. I guess what I’ve enjoyed with progressing as a musician is bringing in melody and harmony. It wasn’t that we were afraid to sing. The singing is very sparse and minimalist, and that was intentional. That was inspired by the For Carnation and Mark Hollis. I’ve really enjoyed embracing melody and being upfront about the vocal matter. That’s part of coming out throughout my life, not just sexually, but broadening my horizons mentally, not to hide behind a wall of shoegaze guitar. To sing about what is important and what is in front of us right now.

GS: It’s interesting that you referenced the late Mark Hollis because you can definitely hear the influence of his band Talk Talk, especially their later work, on Early Day Miners.

GS: Were you out at the time of the formation of Early Day Miners or did that occur later?

DB: I came out in 2008, just after our “Offshore” album came out. It’s while we were writing “The Treatment.”

[The band] was totally supportive and pretty much unfazed, other than the fact that I was married and had a kid. That was more what the questions were about. “How is that going? How is your ex-wife? How is your daughter?”

Fortunately, she had just been born, so she’s never known anything different either way. I’ve got friends from every kind of background now. As you get older, as we can all attest, nothing’s shocking [laughs]. It was such a relief, as anyone would say.

GS: You have been with your partner for more than 10 years, and you currently reside in New Orleans. What are the pros and cons of being a coupled out gay man in NOLA? DB: I would say mostly all pros. It’s such an accepting city.

The LGBTQI scene here is completely creative. Whenever I go to other cities that are famous for being gay, San Francisco or something, I realize how special New Orleans is. It’s very vanguard at the moment, very creative. There is this kind of absurdist culture here that has always had a root in the city but has really been exploded up until the pandemic that I fully expect to return.

GS: Is there a Dan Burton solo album in the works?

DB: Oh, wow! I’ve never really felt the need to do it. I’ve pretty much used Early Day Miners as a moniker to perform under. Early Day Miners could put out a country album or an electro/techno album or it could just be very spare acoustic. You have to explore different genres. I could never put out the same record twice, wouldn’t want to. : :

Taking a look at one’s mental health and addiction issues is important and getting the assistance that is needed is crucial in living a fuller life.

gnoring your mental health issues can be a very costly mistake in your life.

Here is what you can do when you suspect that your mental health problems are interfering with your daily living.

Know the warning signs.

When I first started dealing with my fear and anxieties, I thought that it was just a phase and that it would go away. I was wrong. My fears and anxieties would come and go on a regular basis, and it started to be a major factor in my life. I knew that something was not right.

Do not make the mistake of doing nothing.

I knew some people who had similar issues of fear, anxiety and depression who didn’t get any help. As a result, some of these people could not hold down a job, and they became very distant and unresponsive. I decided that I needed to find a way to get better and to get my life back on track.

Get some professional advice from a counselor.

My first step was to talk to a mental health counselor. In addition, I read many books, and I learned what worked, what didn’t work and what I needed to do to

improve my situation. I realized that the more I learned, the better off I would be in the long run.

Do not give up.

There were times I felt like giving up, but I knew in my heart that there was hope regarding my situation. I was determined to find those techniques that would help manage my fears and anxieties.

Do not wait until it is too late.

I read stories of people who ended their lives because they didn’t get the help they needed to manage their mental health issues. Do not make excuses, and do not let fear stop you from getting treatment.

Your situation is not hopeless.

There are many support groups that can help get your life back on track. The people at these groups are willing to help you, but you must be willing to make the choice of getting better. Every problem has a solution.
