The design concept of the project is “Caring for water”.
The project aims to make Bolin Bolin Billabong and Birrarung River (Yarra River) healthier, to rekindle the riparian areas as an event space, and to celebrate the traditional plant knowledge of Wurundjeri culture. The concept is inspired by the Wurundjeri philosophies and traditional usage of the place. Woody wetlands will be built around the river and the billabong. The wetlands will provide a buffer to the waterbodies, collect and filter grey water and stormwater, provide cultural water, serve as Wurundjeri plant knowledge outdoor workshops, and provide event spaces.
In Wurundjeri culture, water is the lifeblood of the Country, therefore it is critical to care for the waterbodies. Humans were created by Bunjil to look after the Country in Wurundjeri Dreaming stories. Birrarung River and Bolin Bolin Billabong are two of the most sacred components of the Country. Therefore, it is humans’ duty to make the river and the billabong healthy.

Grassy lawns are around the site. They have the potential for ecological retrofits.
The billabong suffers from a lack of water, eutrophication and invasive species.
Birrarung River
Traditionally, Birrarung is seen as a living entity that can hear and has a spirit.

Birrarung is the heart of the Kulin nation, which consists of five language groups.
Wurundjeri people are the traditional owners of the site areas. Bolin Bolin Billabong is one of the most sacred sites for the Wurundjeri communities.
Kulin people believe it is the responsibility of humans to look after Country to keep the Country healthy.
Threats and management opportunities
Water is the lifeblood of Country
Country cannot stay healthy without a sufficient amount of clean water.
Encroaching urban development
Urban development may be built upon the parkland.
Mismanaged vegetation
Over-dense tree canopy covers decrease vunderstories’ biodiversity while being vulnerable to bushfires.
Urban stream syndrome
This includes flash increases in water volume linked to rain and low water quality.
Eutrophication of the billabongs
Bolin Bolin Billabong has accumulated too many nutrients washed down from the nearby residential areas.

Cultural water Culturally and ecologically managed vegetations Reclaim of the residential areas
More water needs to be controlled by Wurundjeri communities to increase biodiversity.
Cultural burning will be re-introduced with indige nous vegetation plantations. Lands from the nearby areas will be gradually purchased by the government and turned into parklands.
Rekindle plant knowledge Community engagement
The plant usage and cultural meanings will be celebrated in the design.
The local communities will be educated and empowered to care for the ecosys tem.

The Unfolding Seasons 四季绵延
In Ancient China, Scholar Gardens are spiritual retreats from the stresses of the world. In the context of Naarm, the project aims to create a contemporary scholar garden with a multi-seasonal experience as one strolls through the site.
The project refers to the Scholar Garden ‘Geyuan’ which created four seasons through planting types, visual cues & abstracted metaphors. By merging these influences & adding an additional layer of the microclimate, ‘The Unfolding Seasons’ express the emphermial beauties of seasonality through the featuring of the current season & the subsequent season. The design creates microclimatic options for visitors & gestures them to revisit Chinatown in the next season.

Project information Project Supervisors: Subject: Time: Type: Location: Wendy Walls Designing for Heat in the Public Domain (ABPL90380) 2021, November Group Project with Andrew Kurniawan, Junyi Lixu, Kester Cheong, and Leonardo Vincent Chinatown Melbourne, Wurundjeri Country, Naarm (Melbourne), Kulin Nation Little Bourke St, Melbourne VIC 3000 Project Description 项目介绍

Northen and southern winds are chosen as main considerations as they are the extremes either during summer or winter.
NORTHEN WIND
prominent in : winter moderate in : spring+autumn low in : summer
*occasional heatwave occurs during summer due to anticyclone over Tasman Sea that draws hot dry continental air from the North (Pezza et al. 2012).

SOUTHERN WIND

*southern wind gives consistent cooling effect due to its maritime origin, especially desireable during summer

1. Windcatcher
The structure will be built on the northern wall of the Winter Garden, to capture the desired southern wind and block off the Northern wind.
The Southern wind at canopy level will be diverted to Winter Garden to enhance a colder body sensory microclimate.
2. Windbreaks
The windbreaks will be consisted of dense vegetation to block gale at human height and guide the direction of the Northern Wind.
3. Microclimate Adaptable Seats
The seats will consist of timber benches which can be flipped up or down depending on user preference of microclimate.
Half of the timber on the benches can be flipped up to form the backrest or flipped down as a part of the bottom of the seats.
On hot days, users can flip up the timber benches to allow breezes to run through the benches.

Spring in Winter 冬日之春
The Spring Garden (Wintertime) will have a warmer microclimate. Maximum solar exposure with mild wind is used to determine the location of Spring Garden. The microclimate in Spring Garden will be further enhanced with microclimate heating strategies.
Spring Garden in Winter
A. Solar gain
The deciduous species will be planted to allow solar exposure during winter to enhance a warmer microclimate. The area will function as a small square.
B.Thermal Seats
The Microclimate Adaptable Seats will have their timber backrest folded down during winter, to expose the concrete backrests to the sun. The concrete will absorb heat and warm up users’ bodies.
C. Paving Material
The pavers will be made of Percydale Cobblestone, which has the darkest colour on site. This dark colour enables the pavers to absorb heat and heat up the areas.

The project aims to provide thermal comfort and democratic seating for all. By improving surface materials and adding more greenery and canopies, the design provides a more thermal comfortable environment to encourage both short-term and midterm urban lingering. The sliding seat system allows for a greater agency of people as they can choose where to sit. Wheelchair users can access this space as well.
