01 [ Reduced-waste: Assembly Structure ] A Design Research In Building Prefabrication and (Dis)Assembly for Future

Academic Studio Design Spring 2022 (unfinished) Group Work With Joonhyuk Yun Role in Team: Design(50%),Drawing(50%),Model making(50%) Instructor: Masoud Akbarzadeh (masouda@upenn.edu) Teaching Asistant: Yuxuan Wang

Considering the worldwide serious waste problems which the architecture and construction industry should be responsible for, recycling and reusing construction materials from existing sources of waste or demolition is considered a viable design approach. This studio aims to investigate innovative design methods, assembly , and disassembly of prefabricated parts in the construction of mid-rise buildings to reduce the waste and push the exploration of structure and material. Learning from the Bracket Set (Dougong system) - an ancient Chinese structural system, this design takes the strategy of stacking and branching structure, explores simple and effective structural forms with polymesh analysis, and then reduces the use of materials through changes in material size and corresponding spatial scales , making the structure more efficient.

ASSEBLE STRATEGY FROM ANCIENT SYSTEM Bracket Set (Dougong) system is a unique structure of ancient Chinese architecture. It can be traced back to more than 2,200 years ago. The oldest existing Dougong system is a temple building in the Tang Dynasty. Dougong is a type of struture at the junction of the column and the beam. By stacking and interlocking, the load transmitted from the roof to the foundation through Dougong. The structure is so powerful that a large part of the huge roof can be cantilevered and supported only by a single column.

STRUCTURAL EXPLORATION WITH POLYMESH

After confirming the basic geometric shape, the design uses Polymesh as a tool to analyze and explore the three-dimensional force of the structure of different shapes and proportions, and select the most concise and powerful structure to further develop the space

More iterations are created based on this recent design. We try to change the level and the shape of the floor to create different forms and space experience. We also try to use similar strategy but different ratio volumes to connect with the initial design, to make the whole structure more stable and make larger span in horizontal direction.

02 [ Atrium X Gap ] A New Typology of Stock Exchange and Mining Facility

Academic Studio Design Fall 2021 Group Work With Chenglu Xue Role in Team: Design(50%),Drawing(50%),Model making(50%) Instructor: Hyojin Kwon (hkwon@gsd.harvard.edu) Teaching Asistant: Angela Huang

Considering New York City's leadership in global finance being challenged and the prospect of virtual currency booming, a new type of virtual currency-based transaction system and structure is believed to help maintain New York's leadership in global finance. The studio are designing a project with three programs, a cryptocurrency particularly Ethereum (NFT) mining facility, a museum to explain blockchain technology with examples of NFT’s and am cryptocurrency exchange developing a new hybrid typology for NYC. The existing Stock Exchange is uniquely equipped to speculate on the future of its development into a precise and novel architecture and urban proposal that are unprecedented that links local finance with global market demands.

Technique from Hybrid: Gap and Atrium The design extracted two space archetypes from the Guggenheim Museum and the Rosenthal Center—gap and atrium. The design try to form visual aesthetic impact by constantly creating contrasts between the two space archetype, such as narrow and integrated , curved windings and straight extrusions.

Mid-term Iteration The mid-term design pays more attention to the form iteration developed from the precedent, and gradually establishes the connection and interaction between the two by continuously strengthening the surrounding of the “gap” and the extrusion of the “atrium” space.

03 [ Flowing Surface] Athetic Exploration through Image Computation Seminar Design Fall 2021 Group Work With Hui Mi Role in Team: Design(50%),Drawing(50%),Model making(50%) Instructor: Ali Rahim Teaching Asistant: Cindy Zheng

This seminar explores contemporary aesthetics through facade iteration with the tool of image computation(Ostagram). Producing complexity and integrating digital design and fabrication techniques into the design process the design explores new formal and material possibility by machine learning, which is believed can lead to a contemporary aesthetic.

04 [ In and With ] Reconstruction and Expansion of The Old Stadium Update of Collective memory

Academic Studio Design Fall 2018 Individual work Instructor: Prof. Yu Chen (873441486@qq.com)

This design is to reconstruct and expand an old building. This old stadium has more than 90 years of history and glory. However, with the continuous updating of campus equipment and the changes of students' daily activities, the old gymnasium is incompatible with modern campus life.In addition to the exterior facade, which is Beaux-Arts Style, its internal partitions and used sports equipment have been constantly updated. In a sense, aside from the historical meaning of its architectural style, the functions of the old stadium also count alot. Therefore, in order to adapt it to the development of the modern campus, I use the two space forms and usage modes of "open" and "closed" to maximize the public space and make it an open "fluid space" and at the same time creating a contrast in appearance so that both the old and the new building can be identified.

21

22

There is a tree on the north side of the old gymnasium with an age of more than 1,500 years. The design plan incorporates the space around the ancient tree into the design scope of the daily activities of teachers and students, and establishes the line of sight between the ancient tree and various indoor and outdoor activities.

23

24

The design also uses grasshopperPython to explore a variety of combinations in the space, and select the best result for spatial development.

05 [ Inside X Outside ] Design of Nanjing 4th City Wall Heritage Park Reconstruction of Interaction

Academic Studio Design Summer 2018 Group Work With Xing Yan, Yueyan Gao, Mengzhu Tao Role in Team: Investigation and Analysis(60%),Conceptual Design(85%) Instructor: Sunan Tu, Ying Bai [All graphics have been redrew by myself unless otherwise credited.]

Nanjing's 4th city wall has lost its identity because of its functional decline. In order to reconstruct the spirit of this relic site, this interdisplinary project attempts to reconstruct the interactive relationship between people and the environment by creating structural units "inside and outside the wall" and connecting them in series, so that visitors can unconsciously experience "inside" and "outside" of the ancient city wall during the tour, thus establishing a new understanding of the lost spirits.

Academic Studio Design Fall 2019 Teamwork With Mengxi Li, Yiming Lei Role in Team: Investigation and Analysis(75%),Conceptual Design(50%), Technical Drawings(95%) Instructor: Prof. Li Bao, Benjamin

This area was once the first and largest railway station in Nanjing, because it was close to the Yangtze River, it also became the first ferry terminal. However, with the continuous development of transportation technology, this land has gradually lost its role. This project attempts and explores from the direction of landscape urbanism, trying to integrate industrial sites with environmental ecology, and through organizing its internal processes and systems, making this place an ecologically sustainable and vigorous place.
