The Center of Seeking Possibilities PROJECT 2 - Materials for Change / Re-Imagined Realities BUILDING PROJECT YAOWEN ZHANG 21057790 Space is unnatural, it is political, it is shaped by various historical and natural elements. The destiny of space oscillates again and again in history. Changes in social form must bring about changes in the nature of space. - Henri Lefebvre, The Production Of Space The complex cultural background of peckham, an area full of three generations of immigrants, and the low level of regional identity have led to a high crime rate in peckham today compared to the rest of London. But this complex cultural background also led to the birth of peckham festival, an annual event that has changed my perception of peckham forever, and I see in it the potential for peckham to become a creative community. Transforming a community is not something that can be achieved in a short period of time, so I wanted to build a youth centre to nurture the creativity of the younger generation in peckham and use the new generation to change the whole community. While deciding on the design of the youth centre, I was inspired to think about the experimental nature of architecture byHenri Lefebvres 'the production of the space'. No building can live forever because of its functionality, the building will eventually be changed by the changing needs of society, so the designer needs to take into account the future environment in which the building will be located and even the possibility of the building being demolished. So when I look back at the programme for the youth centre, which is a programme that belongs to the present, there is no guarantee that it will be successful in transforming peckham, so I decided to design it with the possibility of demolition in mind. I decided to design the building as two parts, the core design concept of the exhibition space in the centre of the building is derived from the clock and it will have vine mans growing on top. It takes 30 years for these vines to reach the ground and when they do it means that the occupants of the building need to start thinking about what they really want from the building in the social context of the time. The rest of the building will be made mainly from locally sourced rammed earth, which means that when the youth centre programme is no longer appropriate for peckham, the users can simply demolish it and redesign it. As an environmentally friendly material the rammed earth will not have a negative impact on the environment and will even help the local environment to repair itself.

LANDSCAPE In order to increase the use of this site, I have designed a series of landscapes around the building to provide a more diverse experience for the audience.

HISTORY ELEMENT Surrey canel park used to be a canal linking Peckham to central London in the early 20th century, but as industrialisation took over the function of the canal was replaced by more convenient land transport and in 1970 the canal was officially abandoned and transformed into a linear park. Its history as a canal has also led to a difference in elevation of approximately 2m between today's surrey canel park and the surrounding area, a difference that cannot be altered.

PECKHAM - SITE ANALYZE The site is located midway between peckham rye and Burgess Park. It is a linear park linking peckham rye with the residential area around Burgess Park. The constraints of the site's natural environment stem from the south-westerly winds that are common in London, and this was something that the designers needed to address in their design. The presence of a large number of residential areas around the site means that buildings for the community may be one of the design directions.

PECKHAM COMMUNITY The community of peckham is relatively complex, with a predominantly three-generation immigrant population that comes from all over the world, which means that peckham is a culturally complex and deep area, but it also means that there is a high level of internal conflict. According to research, peckham has one of the highest crime rates in London and a small population base, which means that crime is more frequent and many people have a stereotypical image of peckham as being poor and criminal. But the peckham festival has changed my perception of peckham, an annual event dedicated to peckham, proving that peckham has the potential to be a creative community.

SITE MODEL - 1:200

SITE PLAN - 1:200 The site I chose is located in the middle of surrey canel park on a vacant lot, there are too few constraints on this lot which will be a major problem for me to start designing, the only constraints I can use are the surrounding trees and secondly the flow of people through the lot and the shadows from the surrounding trees.

DANCE STUDIO

EXHIBITION SPACE

DRAWING STUDIO

Safety will be a key concern for the studio and dancers will need to be protected by the space as much as possible during rehearsals. The balance between indoor light and outdoor passers-by is a key design priority.

A central element in fostering creativity is for young people to identify their own value, and when their artwork is exhibited in a formal, professional exhibition space, it gives them a great sense of achievement and encourages them to continue creating.

One of the core aims of the drawing studio is to foster a sense of cooperation and community cohesion, so the core design principle of the space is to allow young people of different ages to work in the same space

PECKHAM FESTIVAL proves that peckham has the potential to become a creative community. We can fundamentally change the community by nurturing the creativity of a new generation.

PECKHAM FESTIVAL

SOCIAL NEEDS

PROGRAMME Buildings should be designed with experiment and test costs in mind. This means that building materials need to be sourced as locally as possible, and rammed earth is certainly the most suitable choice. In peckham today, a youth centre seems to be the means to help make peckham a creatively healthy community, but in the future who can be sure what space peckham needs. It's like doing a maths problem, when we don't know if the answer is correct, using a pencil becomes the less costly option of experiment, and the rammed earth building becomes the pencil for peckham. The exhibition spaces are built to record realisations like a clock, with thirty years as a reminder to think about what space is really needed at the moment. The drawing studio and dance studio, on the other hand, are written in pencil, erasable, and only belong to the "right answer" now

VOLUME BLOCK EXPERIMENT I started by creating a block of indoor functions and tried to plan the most efficient route for the user.I also started to experiment with roofs, which would be a playground for the public, and I made a series of paper models of roofs and combined them with blocks.

MODEL DEVELOPMENT

Having identified the exhibition space, the dance studio and the painting studio as the final functional blocks, I produced a series of different materials and finalised the texture of the space.

MATERIAL EXPERIMENT Rammed earth would have been the main material used throughout the building, and different proportions of rammed earth would have had different colours and characteristics. As the design requires the matching of rammed earth with plants, the ratio of soil to cement needs to be mastered, so I have tried two different contrasts (3:7, 7:3) and have tried to test its affinity with plants by planting moss on the surface of both.
