Beautiful jewelleries are no longer a luxury for the rich

My major was Textile Design, but I found that I was
mostly interested in Jewelry Design. So I applied for an MA in Jewelry Design in UCA. My first jewelry design expressed the right of animals. So I made a series of garments from the perspective of animals in an attempt to denounce maltreatment and slaughter of animals.
I am currently attending the Pre-sessional course
for English for Art and Design in UCA. This is my first time to study with foreign students. We took part in group projects and shared different opinions. One time, our small group conducted a street interview with local people; we were nervous in the beginning, but we finally overcame it. It was an interesting experience for me!
I hope I can have my own brand in the future. I have never thought that jewelry designers create for the rich, but the materials used can be very expensive. My strengths are pattern design and exploring different materials. So I will continue researching more about recyclable and moderate priced materials to incorporate them into my design.

I am Zih-Yin Lin, From Taiwan. I studied Fine Art from elementary school to university. I always searched for what I am really passionate about in the field of Art & Design until l discovered Jewelry and Metalsmithing. When I engaged with jewelry for the first time, I gained incredible inspiration from it. I was not only deeply fascinated by sparkling gems but also felt excitement towards mysterious metals, performing my creative ideas and emotions through a various types of materials. Moreover, I feel alive while creating my works step by step with my hands!
Up to present, I live an abundant and busy life in the UK. Sometimes, I travel to London, shuttling through streets and lanes, exploring the whole new world of my life, and I still have a strong curiosity about this nation. I come from a totally different education system and here my curiosity has aroused due to numerous ideas stemming from peer communication and artists’ videos.
t
During my main course, I hope I can try my best to test and research some new materials to combine into my work. Furthermore, I am looking for my own unique jewellery skills and technique, because I want the audience to recognize my work and style at a glance; I think that is my biggest goal for my Master‘s course. After graduation, I will apply for a job in jewellery brand company, where I can learn more about marketing management and internal administration. After three years, I hope to be able to have my own jewelry brand studio, where I can design my own jewelry products and sell them.

When I started my degree in design I had no idea what design was. Over the last few years I have found out that design is all you can imagine. First, I studied design as a unique discipline, but after a couple of years I focused on Product Design. After my degree, I started working in a company where I was able to expand my knowledge about rapid prototyping and how the industry works. I also love craft activities and one of my hobbies is ceramics. I can spend hours working on a pottery wheel.
I feel lucky to have experienced improving my English through art projects. When the PSEAD course began, I couldn’t imagine what kind of knowledge I would gain; Activism, Sustainability, Eco-design… new windows to the world ready for us to explore. In addition, I had the opportunity to learn about other people’s culture, which were so different from mine.
After these five weeks, I hope I start my MA in Product Design with more confidence in my English abilities. I expect to enjoy everything that UCA has to offer, such as ceramics or glass workshops among others. Above all, I want live this experience to its fullest and improve both as a person and as a designer.

The hobbies I enjoyed most as a child were drawing pictures and making crafts, and I was always particularly interested in designing by hand. I have been greatly influenced by my father who is involved in the field of architecture. He loved travelling and he never failed to take me to museums and art galleries in the places we visited. These experiences definitely served as a great stepping stone for my Design studies in England.
I have learnt so many things from the 10-week PSEAD course, the most memorable project of which was ‘Art and Activism’ which was a teamwork. I was very lucky to meet passionate, responsible and optimistic classmates. Even if we didn’t have enough time to do a group work, we did our best for this project. Besides, I learnt how to write powerful proposals, take part in teamwork and present. I hope I will keep doing something relevant to Art and Activism in the future. These 10 weeks were precious to me and I am very thankful to the tutors, as they always support us, take us to wonderful places and make us be creative minds.
My final objective is to become a Fashion & Jewellery Designer within the next 10 years, incorporating an intrinsic identity and individuality of my own. In particular, I have a strong belief that UCA is the optimal institution where I can learn traditional skills and digital craft abilities at the same time. To succeed as a Fashion and Jewellery Designer, I hope to combine practical and technical elements and also participate in diverse design projects. Furthermore, I will make a constant effort to foster critical judgment and professional self-confidence at all times. I believe that this will be the first step to accomplishing my goal of becoming a Jewellery Designer.
