01 THE COMPEX OF MARKET AND RESIDENCE JIANGPU ROAD, SHANGHAI

INTRODUCTION: The course tries to forcus on the balance of each segment, such as the relationship of site, architecture appearance, function, urban fabric, space, structure, construction and publicness. Personally, in my design, I wish to create a high density volume, including muti-functional market and low-rise residence. Designing for market, I divide it into three kinds of linear space, providing various service. On the west side of the site, I design a muti-functional space, it can be regarded as market on the daytime and as snack street in the evening. On the other side, I mainly design three categories of appartment layout, using them to merge into a linear volume. In this architecutre, every family has its own platform, which can be using to have a sunbath or barbecue and also can provide a outdoor space for residents to have more opportunities to communicate with each others. 02 COMMUNITY LIBRARY LIYANG ROAD, SHANGHAI

INTRODUCTION: The course tries to interve a concrete design with the concept of structure and space, which wants to establish the consciousness of structure for students and help us to understand the possible meaning of structure in a specific space and place, building a strong relationship among structure, architecture and even city. Personally, in my design, it is a project of rebuilding, which means I preserve all the frame system in the base, aspiring to exhibite a calm atmosphere, conforming to the activities happened in the community library. Besides that, I also deisgn a new structure system attach to the old one, providing a series semi-outdoor space for surrounding residents. I wish people come here not only for reading but also having opportunities to experience some various events. PURIFICATION AND HARVEST OF HUANGPU RIVER, SHANGHAI

INTRODUCTION: The Huangpu River, which supplies dringking water to the city of Shanghai, is a silent eyewitness to Shanghai's history and its development. Today, the inhabitant's source of drinking water has been greatly destroyed. Moreover, their lifestyle depending heavily on the river has been changed. To address the problem of water pollution, we look back to the "history", trying to harness the intelligence of the native creatures in the river, with them serving as "living purifiers" to clean the water. Also, these creatures can serve as food. This will bring rich landscape scenes along the Huangpu River and the diversity of activities people is about to have will give a new definition with the river. 04 FLEXIBLE LANDSCAPE

JING'AN TEMPLE SQUARE, SHANGHAI

INTRODUCTION: During the period of 2015.08.21 and 2015.09.10, there were a series of public cultural activities named “Gravitational Field — interconnections between architecture and public culture” helding in the Jing'an Temple Square, which is the most prosperous site in Shanghai. And one architectural installation — Flexible Landscape was born, which is both artistic and practical.Jing'an Temple Square is relatively 7m lower than West Nanjing Road, so the installation is understood as a set of open landscape in this site, and looks like a bonsai of the city, getting involved with a soft and light profile. Two arc-shaped ridges scattered, as if mountains in the basin, cleverly responding to the open stage and the crowded metro exit.Due to the square stone material ground does not allow any damage, the whole installation was impossible to has basis or ground fixation. And considering of the powerful typhoon damage, the designers eventually decided to adopt 50 pieces of streamline 20-meter long wooden bamboo forming a fluctuating body.In the August of Shanghai, the temperature was scorching, this “arc-mountain ” provided space for abundant public activities in the square with the two shaded space. The water mist sprays hidden in the gap of frame continuing cooled the square. Meanwhile, mist-shrouded scene enhanced the sight of the visual impression of urban landscape bonsai. Under the summer sun, and occasionally appeared a rainbow on top of the mountain, which maked people feel relaxing. The installation itself was a work of art, as well as a space for other activities. A series of public events happened in this “Landscape Bonsai” one after another, here was the experimental field, theater, exhibition, market, playground. It inspires the vitality and creativity of the city, and displayed the open spirit of the city by an architectural way. 05 URBAN CEMETERY

A SPIRTUAL PLACE, SHANGHAI

INTRODUCTION: According to general concensus, a cementery is a place that is for keeping the ashes of the dead and paying respect ancestors. However, with the rapid development of the cities and shortage in the use of land, expanding cemetery or constructing new cemetery area is in some ways a waste to the countryside. Therefore, we think it is time to critically analyze the form of cemetery we have nowadays as well as the way we honor our ancestors. Some questions may include whether or not having a place to pay respects to ancestors in a highly density environment is possible; is it doable to transform the way to honor ancestors from physical to spiritual? Hence, we proposed a design for what we call urban cemeteries. It is a place where people can honor the dead by immersing themselves in these spiritual spaces. In addition, paying respect to the deceased should not be the only function of a cemetery; more events can be carried out in an urban cemetery. Shanghai, as a typical metropolis, was picked to be a model for this project. What we picture to be a urban cemetery is what we call a spontaneous architecture. Its connection with the city itself is through the events that are happening in the city. Thus, there may not necessarily be a base range for such architecture, one can exist in any corner of the city, providing a spiritual space for citizens to think, medtate, relect and be educated. People will be able to experience the entire architecture through a combination of three architectural languages: lighting, geometry and event. This can be extracted to the image form in pic.10 on the following page. Through the interweaving of these three architectural languages, we wish that people could find a spiritual inner space that belongs to themselves; it is also an option to experience the spirituality an architecture could bring through wandering in it. What we desire to create is not only an architecture that is simply defined by its functions; but a place accompanied by aseries of specific events and dramatics effects.
