Dr. J. Larry Barr began practice of general, vascular and thoracic surgery in Monroe in 1979. Over the past several years Dr. Barr has chosen to focus on new developments in the treatment of venous disease. He currently has the only totally office-based practice focusing exclusively on vein care in north Louisiana: -Delta Vein Care-. Most people with venous disease are going untreated because they do not realize their symptoms are from venous disease. It is estimated that over 80 million people suffer from venous disease in the United States alone, and that 4.6 million work days are lost each year. Typical symptoms include aching legs especially after long periods of standing, leg swelling, restless legs, and occasionally cramping. Symptoms usually improve with leg elevation and may improve with walking or exercise. Visible signs may include bulging veins, unsightly spider veins, skin discoloration, or even ulceration. Dr. Barr is a registered vascular technologist and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Venous and Lymphatic Medicine. Dr. Barr performs all procedures as well as the physical and ultrasound exams. Your initial office visit will include an interview and physical exam followed by an ultrasound examination of your lower extremities. The development of ultrasound techniques to evaluate leg veins has made the science of treating venous disease what it is today. After the ultrasound exam a recommendation will be made as to the best way to treat your individual problem. Options for venous treatment include compression therapy, sclerotherapy, phlebectomy, or endovenous ablation, and more recently mechanical occlusion with chemical assistance (MOCA) and Venaseal (closure of the vein with cyanoacrylate glue). All procedures are done in the office under minimal sedation along with local anesthetic. You may require one or several of these modalities to resolve your problem, and all are provided in the office setting with little or no down time. Most procedures last around an hour and you can usually expect to return to work the next day.

HEART ATTACK SYMPTOMS? DIAL 911 Heart Disease is the Number 1 Killer of Women in the US

Women frequently discount the signs of a heart attack to the flu, indigestion or just being tired. It is important for women to know their list of heart attack symptoms*: ■ Uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain in the center of your chest. It lasts more than a few minutes, or goes away and comes back. ■ Pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach. ■ Shortness of breath with or without chest discomfort. ■ Other signs such as breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness. ■ As with men, women’s most common heart attack symptom is chest pain or discomfort. But women are somewhat more likely than men to experience some of the other common symptoms, particularly shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting and back or jaw pain. If you have any of these signs, call 911 and get to a hospital right away.
