I PAY $600 IN CHILD SUPPORT EACH MONTH, BUT IT SEEMS LIKE MY EX-WIFE IS ALWAYS ASKING FOR SOMETHING MORE TO PAY FOR THINGS LIKE DANCE CLASSES AND SOCCER. A: Basically, child support is intended to assist the domiciliary parent in paying for all of the children’s reasonably necessary living expenses. Those expenses are not limited to just food, clothing and housing. They also include other expenses that may be incurred in raising the child. Often a child support award will include day care costs, extraordinary medical expenses and things of that nature. The level of support varies depending on the particular child’s age and needs and the parents’ income. The Louisiana Legislature has set statutory guidelines for the dollar amount of child support in Louisiana. There are also several factors the court takes into consideration when setting the amount of child support. Some of these factors include: (1) the number of children; (2) the ability of the parents to contribute to the support of the child or children; (3) whether the parents have automobiles, housing or other benefits that are furnished by their employer or third party; and (4) special or extraordinary educational, medical, health care or other expenses of the children. The main goal is to do what is in the best interest of the child, and courts are supposed to keep this in mind at all times.
