West Monroe wrapped up its 21st consecutive district championship with a win over Alexandria last week.
West Monroe begins playoff journey at home CODY FUTRELL CFUTRELL@THENEWSSTAR.COM
The road to the Class 5A championship begins for the West Monroe Rebels at home Friday and H.L. Bourgeois is their first road block. The Rebels (8-1-1) are the No. 2 seed in the 5A playoffs and the Braves (4-6) come in as the No. 31 seed. Bourgeios started the season 2-1 but stumbled down the stretch losing four of its final six games in district. The District 7-5A schedule was stacked with great teams including top-ranked Destrehan, which defeated the Braves 48-27, and Hahnville, which won 43-19. The Braves got a boost into the playoffs
with a 44-37 win over Terrebonne last week. Terrebonne still got in at No. 32 to make four teams in that district into the 5A playoffs. The Braves have a strong rushing attack led by quarterback Jude LeCompte who rushed for 135 yards on 23 carries to lead the team to a win and playoff berth. West Monroe is led on defense by linebacker John Bailey Gullatt and his more than 20 tackles per game average. Gullatt had 22 tackles against ASH. Linebacker Jacob Adams, defensive back Sawyer Passman and defensive back Carson Jones have been standouts as of late too. Passman had an interception return for a touchdown on Friday, Adams had another pick and Jones intercepted two passes for the Rebels while also serving most of the game at kicker.

Bourgeios racked up 325 yards rushing last week to beat Terrebonne. West Monroe also leans toward the run with quarterback Slade Bolden and running back Trey Coleman leading the way. Coleman rushed for 119 yards last week in a 4014 win over Alexandria that gave the team its 21st consecutive district championship. The Rebels face a Bourgeois defense that has multiple formations. “The thing that concerns me is how multiple they are on defense,” West Monroe offensive coordinator Glenn Hunt said. “They can go from a four-man front to a five- or six-man front. They come from a very good district.” Connect with Cody on Twitter @cfutrellTNS

Rebels claim 2-5A championship CODY FUTRELL CFUTRELL@THENEWSSTAR.COM
West Monroe defeated Alexandria Senior High, 40-14, on Friday night at Don Shows Field at Rebel Stadium to win the District 2-5A championship. West Monroe forced five turnovers including four interceptions of ASH quarterback Ben Hesni. John Bailey Gullatt again had more than 20 tackles and three different West Monroe defenders recorded an interception. “Our secondary did a great job,” West Monroe coach Jerry Arledge said. “Our goal was — we were going to defend instead of bringing pressure. I don’t know that we hardly ever brought more than the four down linemen.” KEEPING UP WIT THAT JONES: Sophomore Carson Jones continued his breakout campaign with a pair of first-half interceptions. Jones had a third negated by penalty. Jones was also 3-of-4 on PAT kicks in the first half on Friday. KEEP YOUR BALANCE: West Monroe scored just about every way possible on Friday. The scoring assault by the Rebels (8-1-1) was balanced from the start and included Taylor Young with an 11-yard run and 11-yard reception from Slade Bolden in the first half for touchdowns. The Rebels built a 27-14 halftime advantage also on a 53-yard touchdown pass by Robert Scott Foust to Jairus Henry, and a 30-yard interception return for a touchdown by Sawyer Passman. Bolden and Trey Coleman rushed for scores in the second half. Coleman rushed for more than 100 yards on Friday. “I think we have made a lot of progress,” Arledge said. “And that’s the reason you get out here and you coach so hard. And why we are so hard on these guys sometimes. To constantly improve, and to get better and I think we have done that.” ASH scored on a 36yard run by running back Trevon Mosley and Hesni hit Isiah Hill on a 32-yard touchdown pass late in the second quarter. UP NEXT: West Monroe is the No. 2 seed in the Class 5A playoffs and will host H.L. Bourgeois in the first round on Friday at 7 p.m. Connect with Cody on Twitter @cfutrellTNS

Rebels ready to erase painful playoff memories CODY FUTRELL CFUTRELL@THENEWSSTAR.COM
The pain of another second round exit in the Class 5A playoffs at Ponchatoula last season lingers. It is a memory and a feeling that West Monroe players and coaches have had to live with for almost a year now. The Rebels are aiming to rectify that feeling as they begin the 2016 playoffs at home Friday against H.L. Bourgeois. The Rebels know this second chance at the gold must not be taken lightly. “It means a lot to us,” West Monroe senior linebacker Jacob Adams said. “We have a bitter taste in our mouths from losing to Ponchatoula last year and Destrehan (semifinals) my sophomore year. We are ready this year.” Running back Trey Coleman said the game last year in Ponchatoula showed the team the importance of coming out ready for a fight no matter how many games the other team won. “It show you just have to come out motivated and focused,” Coleman said. “You can’t take any team for granted. It is not about who we are playing — it is about playing our football. If we do that nobody can beat us.” Senior quarterback Robert Scott Foust — who now shares that responsibility with junior Slade Bolden — said the loss was a humbling one that taught the team a lot. “It helps us a lot because it teaches us not to take any snap, any game for granted,” Foust said. “It is a huge motivation for us. Just take it one week at a time.”
