West Monroe quarterback Slade Bolden throws a pass during last week’s game against H.L. Bourgeois.

Playmakers abound for Rebels, Lions CODY FUTRELL CFUTRELL@THENEWSSTAR.COM

West Monroe travels to Ouachita on Thursday for the second round of the LHSAA Class 5A playoffs. Kickoff is 7 p.m at Lions Stadium. The Rebels have won every game in this series since 1995 and that includes a second-round win at Ouachita in 2000 – 43-7 – and a quarterfinal win at West Monroe in 2008 – 37-16. This marks the second trip to The Lions’ Den this season for the Rebels. West Monroe beat Ouachita 44-21 on Oct. 21 in a game that the Rebels controlled with big special teams plays such as a punt return for

touchdown by Taylor Young, a fumble return for score on a kickoff by Tre’bion Terry and a poor punt snap by Ouachita giving the Rebel offense the ball at the Ouachita 15-yard line that led to a Slade Bolden touchdown run. Many eyes will be on the quarterback play on Friday. West Monroe’s Bolden (five touchdowns last week) and Robert Scott Foust (one passing touchdown last week) and Ouachita’s Devion Warren (six rushing TDs last week vs. Walker). Warren can also make plays in the passing game including to 6-foot-7 wideout Jay Head as well as Joshua Newton and Caleb Clark. Warren has passed for more than 800

yards this season. Ouachita (6-5) is putting the pieces together on offense at just the right time. The 67-29 win at No. 15 Walker last week marked the largest points total for the 18thseeded Lions this season. Ouachita scored 57 points combined in the two games prior to facing Walker. West Monroe (9-1-1) also seems to have found the right ingredients to its offense as of late. With the maturing of the offensive line and the emergence of a stellar passing game on the sure hands of wide receivers Taylor Young and Jarius Henry, the Rebels have another facet of the offense to use. A special series between West Monroe and Ouachita CODY FUTRELL CFUTRELL@THENEWSSTAR.COM

The word “special” can be thrown around a lot in sports. Webster defines special as “different from what is normal or usual.” Certainly this can apply to the athletics rivalry between West Monroe High School and Ouachita Parish High School. Two schools separated by 11.5 miles of Interstate 20, the football rivalry has belonged to West Monroe in recent years. Ouachita won almost yearly from the time West Monroe High School opened its doors in 1953 until the current streak began in the 1995 season. In fact, looking at available records dating back to 1982, West Monroe leads the series 21-11 since that time and won just once from 1983 to 1994. West Monroe and Ouachita meet this Thursday at The Lions’ Den for a 7 p.m second-round playoff game. And no matter the score or the series count the community comes out to support their favorite school with great passion. The two teams are no stranger to facing each other in the playoffs either. Thursday will mark the third playoff game between the two since 2000 and West Monroe won both of those games by a combined 80-23. The word “special” was a big part of the conversation following the Rebels’ 44-21 district win at Ouachita back on Oct. 21. Special teams mistakes were key to the demise of the Lions with a poor punt snap, a punt return given up for a score and a fumble return for a touchdown on a Ouachita kickoff return were big momentum shifts. Then you have your special talent. It is all over the field from quarterbacks Slade Bolden and Robert Scott Foust at West Monroe to Devion Warren at Ouachita (Arkansas commit). From running back Trey Coleman (Tennessee Commit) and wide receivers Taylor Young (La. Tech Baseball signee) and Jarius Henry to running back Dylan Roberts and wide receiver Jay Head at Ouachita. The defenses are stacked too with John Bailey Gullatt, Jacob Adams, Carson Jones, Dennis Collins (TCU commit) and Sawyer Passman leading the Rebels. Chris Lewis, Sean Tilmon and Brendan Hardy have been standouts for the Lions’ defense. Connect with Cody on Twitter @cfutrellTNS

West Monroe crushes Bourgeios JIMMY TOUCHET SPECIAL TO THE NEWS-STAR

West Monroe junior quarterback Slade Bolden scored five touchdowns three different ways to lead the Rebels (9-1-1) to a 48-14 Class 5A playoff victory over the H.L. Bourgeois Braves (4-7) at Don Shows Field at West Monroe High School’s Rebel Stadium on Friday. Bolden rushed for two touchdowns and passed for two more and added a touchdown reception from senior quarterback Robert Scott Foust to lead the Rebels to a dominating victory over the H.L. Bourgeois Braves. With 4 minutes remaining in the opening quarter, Bolden put the Rebels up with a quarterback keeper to put the Rebels up to stay with a 7-0 lead. Three minutes later the Rebels extended their lead when West Monroe’s Trey Coleman scored on a 29-yard run. West Monroe advances to face Ouachita Parish. The Rebels will travel east on Interstate 20 to face their District 2-5A rivals.
