STUDY PROPOSAL TITLE Book Makeup
INTRODUCTION
According to the progress of my study proposal, the study can be divided into four steps. 1. Look back to the history of design and consult the brief history of design to comprehend the development process of material technique in the graphic design history and sum up a set of reliable theoretical system; in addition, analyze some classic works which promote the reforms of graphic design in the history. 2. Research the development direction of the present material technique, grasp the existing techniques, reknow them and take advantage of their advantages; meanwhile, explore and research some new techniques based on the existing knowledge. 3. Provide the support of material techniques based on the cases of graphic design, put forward some reliable experiment schemes and concepts and research the practicality of the schemes. 4. Complete the design and put it into practice. The study project will be completed and a set of theory combining material techniques and graphic design as well as some practice cases will be produced.
The coming of the information age makes the communication of graphic design more and more extensive and promotes the rapid development of design. Now the design is no longer created on the paper or in 2D level. In my opinion, a comprehensive graphic design should be put forward extensively. Since the material science is the main melody of the modern world, my research objective is to combine materials with graphic design to expand the scope of graphic design. Looking back to history, most graphic designs are demonstrated on the paper. I am wondering if we can explore some new materials to cater for our design. Designers from University of Arts London have developed a clothing material from green tea culture solution based on the effect of bacterial fermentation, which is similar to paper or vegetable leave after being dried. This clothing method is more environmental than the existing ordinary ones. Another new material is the product made by scales of a fish named the Fish Feast which is Erik de Laurens’ graduation design from Royal College of Art. The special about this material is that it uses the natural scale as raw material to form a unique texture after heating and compressing. All these research directions deserve study. Design would never move forward if we only think about the format we need.
EVALUATION At present, this study is on the first stage. The early book design focuses on the pure plane such as graph, layout, color and font. With the development of plane, the possibilities of the mounting could be various, which indicate design is moving towards a flexible, diversified and dynamic direction.
PROGRAMME OF STUDY
I’ve made an exploratory attempt about the combination of materials and graphic design---a book about the package design for the blind. Considering the application of Braille on the package, I attempt to emphasize the tactile peculiarity of Braille and find out the “acoustic absorber” (a material used to insulate sounds in KTV). This material has a concavo-convex surface which magnifies blind person’s tactile sense, so I use it as the front and back covers of the book.
My current research project is Book Makeup. Based on the research of book design, I take the tactile perception of the book materials as the research object to research several materials and introduce the concept of moving material, thus breaking the visual and tactile limitations of previous books and the characteristics of no changes. Eventually the results are presented with the tactile perceptions of several different materials.

Calendar 2012
This is a combination of Chinese and Western cultures as well as an experiment integrating the traditional and modern printings with the carrier of the calendar of the Year of the Dragon. The date part of the Calendar is printed by the manual way of the traditional Chinese movable type printing. The numbers of twelve months are generated by the digital printing after font designs in the computer.

Target group
TDC ANNUAL TYPOGRAPHY of the New York Type Directors Club Exhibition Design.
The target sell group of professional design books is mainly focus on the people involving in design, such as designers, design firms, design teams and design major students. The exhibition should try best to show the professional and unique of books to attract concerned people.
Main Point The show is about books of font design, which is upon font, mainly engaging in expression of the shape of font, putting font into space exertion. Moreover, it conveys a kind of much directly perceived feeling, designing font demonstration effect in 3-D.
Space Conditions Because of the limitation of budget, space condition is also limited, which is a 2.5 meter wide wall and 3 meter empty space in front of the wall. The exhibition in this space should be aim for simple and high contrast effect.
Benefit and orientation Owning to the limitation of space and budget in the exhibition of recommended books, low-priced and effective materials should be put on the priority. So that can make it the most eye-catching book and a best seller.
Path Prediction According to the habit that people used to treat the wall that they faced when they went through the door and turn left as the first vision stop area, setting up the exhibition here can attract people at the first time.
Synchronization Collaboration Plane Means Graphics, fonts, layout and packaging. Using a few graph, combine with font, layout to deliver the intention of exhibition.

This material is light so that it can be easily bore by wall; It is low-cost, suiting for short-term exhibition; what’s more, the thickness of foam commendably represent the 3-D we need; Last but not least, foam can express strong visual shock which is our expectation.

Blind person supplies hard to see: We interviewed several shopping malls, finding that utility for disabled person was ignored. The sale stuff told us that the profit of utility for disabled person was very low and the need for these kind of utility was small, so most shopping mall doesn’t sell it. We found a medical apparatus shop which sold a few blood pressure test machines, wheelchairs, crutches, and other supplies for disabled person. But for blind people, the shop just provides cane in high price. However, American dealers are different. They spend a great deal of time on the development of blind assistant supplies. There are some examples: tandem bicycle, voice vial, safety whistle, boards tablet, voice menu, voice shoes, vacuum cleaner, voice GPS and so on.

03/ Blind School Research We went to a blind school in Fuyang, Zhejiang on 25th April. We observed facilities in the school, communicating with students and teachers, and compiling questionnaire survey. We found that most blind people actually were ill with amaurosis but not really blind. Most students completely supported our project and gave us a lot of advices. Teachers thought this subject very hard, but meaningful.

Research Summary
Advantage: With the growing of economy, the quality of people is being higher. Certainly, the attention people pay to blind people is much more than that in former years. Through our survey carried in the blind school, we found that blind people were in high demand of food, which could become a big untapped market. Besides, blind people have a big interest in this kind of package and indicate the package will motivate their desire to make purchases. Didadvantage: We found this kind of package will make businessmen increase cost of commodity by study of survey.

It is estimated by WHO(World Health Organization) that there are 4-4.5 thousand blind person and triple of that of amblyopia around the world. In China, there will be about 450,000 new blind person and 1,350,000 new amblyopia which means one blind person and three amblyopia person will be added in every minute. However, such a large consumer groups have not been emphasized by businessmen. So we can’t see any blind package in the shopping mall.
However, American dealers are different. They spend a great deal of time on the development of blind assistant supplies. We will study and develop the package based on the special recognition methods and recognition effect of blind people. Finally, our study will has advantage for blind people when they buying things, raising perchase efficiencies and improving their living standard.

Based on our study in blind school, we found the largest perchase of blind people was food and living supplies in the second. So we decide to spare no effort on food package, the most needed section of blind people.

After that, we went to several supermarkets and found there weren’t any blind package. This situation gave us another reason to do the blind package.

We divided products into several aspects: biscuit, chocolate, sweet sauce and beverage.
Bcolor will be a new food brand. It involves biscuit, chocolate, sweet sauce, juice and much more food varieties. Our consumer group is young people who take joy in living and have a risky heart. Certainly, our brand has to have a unique characteristic to survive in society. Young people seek for a food brand with an attractive package, not only enjoying the good taste but also a designer-look package. Our brand will add a blind recognition function to the existing package to have the blind people get into consumer groups for the sake of impartiality. Blind & bright is our purpose.
For now, China’s food industry, which predominates in primary processing of raw material of agro-food that indicates low level refinement, stays in growing period. Braile is a great way to help them for recognition in the case of lacking audio help. The profile of a product is the most concerned aspect when blind people choosing products. For instance, some soft package could help them recognize products easily. Smooth material which is the best material in tactile feeling of blind people guilds us to choose a appropriate material for them.

We don’t make the isolated package that just for blind people. Instead, in our former design, we will add an blind recognition area to the ordinary package, including name of product, taste, date of production and other important information. It could eliminate barriers to consumption for blind people, give them fair consume right as the same as ordinary people.
We can draw the conclusion from two questionares: Our direction is food&beverage products because it’s the greast exposure to the blind consumer group. Most blind people cannot shopping by themselves since the packages in the market are hard to distinguish. When asked how did they distinguish products, they said the most important way is depending on their tactile feeling or introduction of other people. Tactile feeling is an important breakthrough point to figure out the blind package. According to our survey, the fact that 67% blind person don’t have failed shopping experience surprised us a lot. Through further investigation, we found these people could do some simple recognition among diverse products. For example, THE SPRING WATER OF FARMER and FRUIT GRAIN OF ORANGE have different type of appearance so that they can easily distinguish them. But for the same package in different tastes, they still can’t distinguish. It illustrates that blind people can distinguish products by their own logical analysis. logo 4. For stressing out color, we used multicolor to express the logo. A color shows a taste, which is easy to distinguish. Based on each type of foods, apply logos to different shapes. Here are examples: circle indicates biscuit, square indicates chocolate, rectangular indicates beverage. Circle plays a role of sign, which is simple and can save space. So as square. Rectangular having a good tensile force can be stretched illimitably which is convenient to make use of.The apply of dot is for the consider that whether Braille and shapes could be integrated.

02/ Packaging Concept Sketch Due to the previous conclusion, we added touchable shapes to four types of packages: biscuit(dogleg); beverage(dot); sweet sauce(curve); chocolate(vertical bar). From this way, blind people can touch to recognize different foods.
