Flee From 25 February France/Denmark/Norway/ Sweden 2022 89 mins Dir: Jonas Poher Rasmussen 12A
The Duke From 25 February UK 2022 95 mins Dir: Roger Michell
In 1961, Kempton Bunton (Jim Broadbent), a 60-year old taxi driver, stole Goya’s portrait of the Duke of Wellington from the National Gallery in London. It was the first (and remains the only) theft in the Gallery’s history. Kempton sent ransom notes saying that he would return the painting on condition that the government invested more in care for the elderly. A wonderfully uplifting tale co-starring Helen Mirren and Matthew Goode.
Flee tells the story of Amin Nawabi as he grapples with a painful secret he has kept hidden for 20 years, one that threatens to derail the life he has built for himself and his soon to be husband. Recounted mostly through animation to director Jonas Poher Rasmussen, he tells for the first time the story of his extraordinary journey as a child refugee from Afghanistan. Nominated for three Oscars: Best Animated Feature, Best Documentary and Best International Feature.
From 28 February France 1962 105 mins Dir: Francois Truffaut Truffaut’s hugely popular New Wave classic sees Jeanne Moreau at her most ebullient as Catherine, a Parisian beauty caught up in a complex ménage à trois with the two friends of the title - one Austrian, the other French - just before World War One. A romantic roller-coaster of a movie, it’s fast, funny, stylish and affecting all at once.
7 – 10 March USA 2022 114 mins Dir: Peter Middleton & James Spinney A look at the life and work of Charlie rocketed to fame from the slums of Victorian London and spent decades as one of Hollywood’s most famous and beloved stars until his scandalous fall from grace. Never-before-heard recordings, intimate home movies and newly restored classic films reveal a side to Chaplin that the world never got to see.
Ali & Ava
Cyrano
11 – 17 March UK 2022 95 mins Dir: Clio Barnard
11 – 17 March UK/USA/Canada 2021 124 mins Dir: Joe Wright
Ali & Ava is a tender, intelligent, Bradford-set romance that combines elements of melodrama and social realism to sweet and striking effect. Boisterous landlord Ali (Adeel Akhtar) and pragmatic teaching assistant Ava (Claire Rushbrook) meet through a chance encounter. It’s a superbly compelling contemporary love story and another triumph for Barnard (The Arbor,The Selfish Giant, Dark River).
Award-winning director Joe Wright envelops moviegoers in a symphony of emotions with music, romance, and beauty in Cyrano, re-imagining the timeless tale of a heart-breaking love triangle. A man ahead of his time, Cyrano de Bergerac (Peter Dinklage) dazzles with ferocious wordplay and brilliant swordplay. But, convinced that his appearance render him un worthy of the love of a devoted friend, the luminous Roxanne (Haley Bennett), Cyrano has yet to declare his feelings for her – and Roxanne has fallen in love, at first sight, with Christian (Kelvin Harrison, Jr.).
