Japanese bound notebooks These notebooks are made from one large sheet of watercolour paper folded to make the leaves of the book. Their size makes them ideal to carry around with you to use as sketchbooks or to make notes when inspiration strikes!

s u p p l ie s Per Book 1 A1 sheet of medium-weight 135gms watercolour paper

2 bulldog clips 1 large needle 1 metre of coloured butcher’s twine, string or thin ribbon drill with 2mm drill bit (or bradawl) scalpel metal ruler

to make book with red binding Place your piece of paper on a flat surface so it is laying landscape.

Fold the piece of paper into 16ths, this will take four folds. Fold 1: fold in half like a book from left to right.

Fold 2: fold from top to bottom.

Fold 3: fold from left to right again.

Fold 4: fold from top to bottom.

Depending on the thickness of your paper the last two folds might be a bit tough but a good hard squash will help.

You now have your basic book shape with one spine and 16 pages, some of which are separate and some joined as folds.

When you reach the second short side measure 18cm from the first line and draw your line. (You may find it easier to move the bulldog clips around as you do to hold the pages in place firmly.) Place on a cutting mat and trim with a metal ruler and scapel again moving the clips as you go. You now have an 18cm high rectangle notebook of 16 pages.

Place your book on an old piece of wood or a surface you don’t mind drilling in to. With a pencil and ruler mark out the holes as shown on the guide on page 25. Then drill the holes.

Place the set square with one edge lining up with the spine of the book and the other along one short edge a 5mm in from the top of the book. Draw a faint pencil line along this edge. Repeat this with the long side.

Shimmering fishes mobile The variety of papers used to make the fish in this mobile all catch the light in different ways making it almost as mesmerising as if you were snorkelling alongside them. Colouring the watercolour paper with ink gives an extra watery feel.

Using the 2 different templates on page 124 cut 16 fish from the various papers.

Hole punch an eye in each of the fish roughly where indicated on the templates. It looks better if the fish aren’t all identical.

To make the sphere for the end of the mobile cut three circles of paper using the circle punch or circle cutter.
